ข้อ ๖๒ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เงื่อนต้นแห่งภวตัณหา ย่อมไม่ปรากฏในกาลก่อนแต่นี้ ภว ตัณหาไม่มี แต่ภายหลังจึงมี เพราะเหตุนั้น เราจึงกล่าวคำอย่างนี้ว่า ก็เมื่อเป็นเช่นนั้น ภวตัณหา มีข้อนี้เป็นปัจจัยจึงปรากฏ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราย่อมกล่าวภวตัณหาว่ามีอาหาร มิได้กล่าวว่า ไม่มีอาหาร ก็อะไรเป็นอาหารของภวตัณหาควรกล่าวว่า อวิชชา แม้อวิชชาเราก็กล่าวว่ามีอาหาร มิได้กล่าวว่าไม่มีอาหาร ก็อะไรเป็นอาหารของอวิชชา ควรกล่าวว่านิวรณ์ ๕ แม้นิวรณ์ ๕ เราก็ กล่าวว่ามีอาหาร มิได้กล่าวว่าไม่มีอาหาร ก็อะไรเป็นอาหารของนิวรณ์ ๕ ควรกล่าวว่า ทุจริต ๓ แม้ทุจริต ๓ เราก็กล่าวว่ามีอาหาร มิได้กล่าวว่าไม่มีอาหาร ก็อะไรเป็นอาหารของทุจริต ๓ ควรกล่าวว่า การไม่สำรวมอินทรีย์แม้การไม่สำรวมอินทรีย์เราก็กล่าวว่ามีอาหาร มิได้กล่าวว่า ไม่มีอาหาร ก็อะไรเป็นอาหารของการไม่สำรวมอินทรีย์ ควรกล่าวว่าความไม่มีสติสัมปชัญญะ แม้ความไม่มีสติสัมปชัญญะเราก็กล่าวว่ามีอาหาร มิได้กล่าวว่าไม่มีอาหาร ก็อะไรเป็นอาหารของ ความไม่มีสติสัมปชัญญะ ควรกล่าวว่า การทำไว้ในใจโดยไม่แยบคายแม้การทำไว้ในใจโดย ไม่แยบคายเราก็กล่าวว่ามีอาหาร มิได้กล่าวว่าไม่มีอาหารก็อะไรเป็นอาหารของการทำไว้ในใจ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนเมื่อฝนเม็ดหยาบตกลงเบื้องบนภูเขาเมื่อฝนตกหนักๆ อยู่ น้ำนั้นไหลไปตามที่ลุ่ม ย่อมยังซอกเขา ลำธารและห้วยให้เต็ม ซอกเขา ลำธารและห้วย ที่เต็ม ย่อมยังหนองให้เต็ม หนองที่เต็มย่อมยังบึงให้เต็ม บึงที่เต็ม ย่อมยังแม่น้ำน้อยให้เต็ม แม่น้ำน้อยที่เต็ม ย่อมยังแม่น้ำใหญ่ให้เต็ม แม่น้ำใหญ่ที่เต็ม ย่อมยังมหาสมุทรสาครให้เต็ม มหาสมุทรสาครนี้มีอาหารอย่างนี้ และเต็มเปี่ยมอย่างนี้ แม้ฉันใด ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย การไม่คบ สัตบุรุษที่บริบูรณ์ ย่อมยังการไม่ฟังสัทธรรมให้บริบูรณ์ … อวิชชาที่บริบูรณ์ย่อมยังภวตัณหาให้ บริบูรณ์ ภวตัณหานี้มีอาหารอย่างนี้ และบริบูรณ์อย่างนี้ ฉันนั้นเหมือนกันแล ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรากล่าววิชชาและวิมุตติว่ามีอาหาร มิได้กล่าวว่าไม่มีอาหาร ก็อะไร เป็นอาหารของวิชชาและวิมุตติ ควรกล่าวว่า โพชฌงค์ ๗ แม้โพชฌงค์ ๗ เราก็กล่าวว่ามีอาหาร มิได้กล่าวว่าไม่มีอาหาร ก็อะไรเป็นอาหารของโพชฌงค์ ๗ ควรกล่าวว่าสติปัฏฐาน ๔ แม้สติ ปัฏฐาน ๔ เราก็กล่าวว่ามีอาหารมิได้กล่าวว่าไม่มีอาหาร ก็อะไรเป็นอาหารของสติปัฏฐาน ๔ ควรกล่าวว่า สุจริต ๓แม้สุจริต ๓ เราก็กล่าวว่ามีอาหาร มิได้กล่าวว่าไม่มีอาหาร ก็อะไรเป็น อาหารของสุจริต ๓ ควรกล่าวว่า การสำรวมอินทรีย์ แม้การสำรวมอินทรีย์เราก็กล่าวว่ามีอาหาร มิได้กล่าวว่าไม่มีอาหาร ก็อะไรเป็นอาหารของการสำรวมอินทรีย์ควรกล่าวว่า สติสัมปชัญญะ แม้สติสัมปชัญญะเราก็กล่าวว่ามีอาหาร มิได้กล่าวว่าไม่มีอาหาร ก็อะไรเป็นอาหารของสติสัมป

“Purimā, bhikkhave, koṭi na paññāyati bhavataṇhāya: ‘ito pubbe bhavataṇhā nāhosi, atha pacchā samabhavī’ti.
“Mendicants, it is said that no prior point of craving for continued existence is found, before which there was no craving for continued existence, and afterwards it came to be.

Evañcetaṁ, bhikkhave, vuccati, atha ca pana paññāyati: ‘idappaccayā bhavataṇhā’ti.
And yet it is evident that there is a specific condition for craving for continued existence.

Bhavataṇhampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṁ vadāmi, no anāhāraṁ.
I say that craving for continued existence is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro bhavataṇhāya?
And what is the fuel for craving for continued existence?

‘Avijjā’tissa vacanīyaṁ.
You should say: ‘Ignorance.’

I say that ignorance is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled.

Iti kho, bhikkhave, asappurisasaṁsevo paripūro assaddhammassavanaṁ paripūreti, assaddhammassavanaṁ paripūraṁ assaddhiyaṁ paripūreti, assaddhiyaṁ paripūraṁ ayonisomanasikāraṁ paripūreti, ayonisomanasikāro paripūro asatāsampajaññaṁ paripūreti, asatāsampajaññaṁ paripūraṁ indriyaasaṁvaraṁ paripūreti, indriyaasaṁvaro paripūro tīṇi duccaritāni paripūreti, tīṇi duccaritāni paripūrāni pañca nīvaraṇe paripūrenti, pañca nīvaraṇā paripūrā avijjaṁ paripūrenti, avijjā paripūrā bhavataṇhaṁ paripūreti;
In this way, when the factor of associating with untrue persons is fulfilled, it fulfills the factor of listening to an untrue teaching. When the factor of listening to an untrue teaching is fulfilled, it fulfills the factor of lack of faith … irrational application of mind … lack of mindfulness and situational awareness … lack of sense restraint … the three kinds of misconduct … the five hindrances … ignorance. When ignorance is fulfilled, it fulfills craving for continued existence.

evametissā bhavataṇhāya āhāro hoti, evañca pāripūri.
That’s the fuel for craving for continued existence, and that’s how it’s fulfilled.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, uparipabbate thullaphusitake deve vassante taṁ udakaṁ yathāninnaṁ pavattamānaṁ pabbatakandarapadarasākhā paripūreti, pabbatakandarapadarasākhā paripūrā kusobbhe paripūrenti, kusobbhā paripūrā mahāsobbhe paripūrenti, mahāsobbhā paripūrā kunnadiyo paripūrenti, kunnadiyo paripūrā mahānadiyo paripūrenti, mahānadiyo paripūrā mahāsamuddaṁ sāgaraṁ paripūrenti;
It’s like when the heavens rain heavily on a mountain top, and the water flows downhill to fill the hollows, crevices, and creeks. As they become full, they fill up the pools. The pools fill up the lakes, the lakes fill up the streams, and the streams fill up the rivers. And as the rivers become full, they fill up the ocean.

evametassa mahāsamuddassa sāgarassa āhāro hoti, evañca pāripūri.
That’s the fuel for the ocean, and that’s how it’s filled up.

Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, asappurisasaṁsevo paripūro assaddhammassavanaṁ paripūreti, assaddhammassavanaṁ paripūraṁ assaddhiyaṁ paripūreti, assaddhiyaṁ paripūraṁ ayonisomanasikāraṁ paripūreti, ayonisomanasikāro paripūro asatāsampajaññaṁ paripūreti, asatāsampajaññaṁ paripūraṁ indriyaasaṁvaraṁ paripūreti, indriyaasaṁvaro paripūro tīṇi duccaritāni paripūreti, tīṇi duccaritāni paripūrāni pañca nīvaraṇe paripūrenti, pañca nīvaraṇā paripūrā avijjaṁ paripūrenti, avijjā paripūrā bhavataṇhaṁ paripūreti;
In the same way, when the factor of associating with untrue persons is fulfilled, it fulfills the factor of listening to an untrue teaching. When the factor of listening to an untrue teaching is fulfilled, it fulfills the factor of lack of faith … irrational application of mind … lack of mindfulness and situational awareness … lack of sense restraint … the three kinds of misconduct … the five hindrances … ignorance. When ignorance is fulfilled, it fulfills craving for continued existence.

And what is the fuel for knowledge and freedom?

‘Satta bojjhaṅgā’tissa vacanīyaṁ.
You should say: ‘The seven awakening factors.’

Sattapāhaṁ, bhikkhave, bojjhaṅge sāhāre vadāmi, no anāhāre.
I say that the seven awakening factors are fueled by something, they’re not unfueled.

And what is the fuel for the seven awakening factors?

Iti kho, bhikkhave, sappurisasaṁsevo paripūro saddhammassavanaṁ paripūreti, saddhammassavanaṁ paripūraṁ saddhaṁ paripūreti, saddhā paripūrā yonisomanasikāraṁ paripūreti, yonisomanasikāro paripūro satisampajaññaṁ paripūreti, satisampajaññaṁ paripūraṁ indriyasaṁvaraṁ paripūreti, indriyasaṁvaro paripūro tīṇi sucaritāni paripūreti, tīṇi sucaritāni paripūrāni cattāro satipaṭṭhāne paripūrenti, cattāro satipaṭṭhānā paripūrā satta bojjhaṅge paripūrenti, satta bojjhaṅgā paripūrā vijjāvimuttiṁ paripūrenti;
In this way, when the factor of associating with true persons is fulfilled, it fulfills the factor of listening to the true teaching. When the factor of listening to the true teaching is fulfilled, it fulfills the factor of faith … rational application of mind … mindfulness and situational awareness … sense restraint … the three kinds of good conduct … the four kinds of mindfulness meditation … the seven awakening factors. It’s like when the heavens rain heavily on a mountain top, and the water flows downhill to fill the hollows, crevices, and creeks. As they become full, they fill up the pools. The pools fill up the lakes, the lakes fill up the streams, and the streams fill up the rivers. And as the rivers become full, they fill up the ocean.

That’s the fuel for the ocean, and that’s how it’s filled up.

In the same way, when the factor of associating with true persons is fulfilled, it fulfills the factor of listening to the true teaching. When the factor of listening to the true teaching is fulfilled, it fulfills the factor of faith … rational application of mind … mindfulness and situational awareness … sense restraint …the three kinds of good conduct … the four kinds of mindfulness meditation … the seven awakening factors. When the seven awakening factors are fulfilled, they fulfill knowledge and freedom.
