ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

ข้อ ๕๑๕ครั้งนั้นแล ท่านพระอานนท์ได้เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคยังที่ประทับ ถวาย บังคมพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้ว นั่งลง ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่งครั้นแล้ว พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสกะ ท่านพระอานนท์ว่า ดูกรอานนท์ ท่านทั้งหลายพึงอนุเคราะห์คนใดและคนเหล่าใดเป็นมิตร อำมาตย์ ญาติ หรือสาโลหิตพึงสำคัญว่าเป็นคำที่ควรฟัง คนเหล่านั้น อันท่านทั้งหลายพึงชักชวน พึง ให้ตั้งอยู่เสมอ พึงให้ดำรงอยู่ ในฐานะ ๓ ประการ ๓ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ

๑. พึงชักชวน พึงให้ตั้งอยู่เสมอ พึงให้ดำรงอยู่ในความเลื่อมใสอย่าง ไม่หวั่นไหว ในพระพุทธเจ้าว่า แม้เพราะเหตุนี้ๆ พระผู้มีพระภาคพระองค์นั้นเป็นพระอรหันต์ … ทรงเบิกบาน แล้ว เป็นผู้จำแนกธรรม ฯ

๒. พึงชักชวน พึงให้ตั้งอยู่เสมอ พึงให้ดำรงอยู่ในความเลื่อมใสอย่างไม่หวั่นไหวใน พระธรรมว่า พระธรรมอันพระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสดีแล้ว … อันวิญญูชนพึงรู้เฉพาะตน ฯ

๓. พึงชักชวน พึงให้ตั้งอยู่เสมอ เพื่อให้ดำรงอยู่ในความเลื่อมใสอย่างไม่หวั่นไหว ในพระสงฆ์ว่า พระสงฆ์สาวกของพระผู้มีพระภาค เป็นผู้ปฏิบัติดีแล้ว … เป็นนาบุญของโลก ไม่ มีนาบุญอื่นจะยิ่งกว่า ฯ

เล่ม ๒๐ · หน้า ๒๑๑ดูกรอานนท์ มหาภูต ๔ คือ ปฐวีธาตุ ๑ อาโปธาตุ ๑ เตโชธาตุ ๑ วาโยธาตุ ๑ พึงเป็นอย่างอื่นได้ แต่พระอริยสาวกผู้ประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอย่างไม่หวั่นไหวในพระพุทธเจ้า ไม่พึงเป็นอย่างอื่นไปได้เลย นี้ความเป็นอื่นในข้อนั้นข้อที่พระอริยสาวกผู้ประกอบด้วยความ เลื่อมใสอย่างไม่หวั่นไหวในพระพุทธเจ้านั้นจักเข้าถึงนรก กำเนิดสัตว์ดิรัจฉาน หรือเปรตวิสัย นี้ไม่เป็นฐานะที่จะมีได้ ดูกรอานนท์ มหาภูต ๔ คือ ปฐวีธาตุ ๑ อาโปธาตุ ๑ เตโชธาตุ ๑ วาโยธาตุ ๑ พึงเป็นอย่างอื่นได้ แต่พระอริยสาวกผู้ประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอย่างไม่หวั่นไหว ในพระธรรม ไม่พึงเป็นอย่างอื่นไปได้เลย ฯลฯ แต่พระอริยสาวกผู้ประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใส อย่างไม่หวั่นไหวในพระสงฆ์ ไม่พึงเป็นอย่างอื่นไปได้เลย นี้ความเป็นอย่างอื่นในข้อนั้น ข้อที่ พระอริยสาวกผู้ประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอย่างไม่หวั่นไหว ในพระสงฆ์นั้น จักเข้าถึงนรก

กำเนิดสัตว์ดิรัจฉาน หรือเปรตวิสัย นี้ไม่เป็นฐานะที่จะมีได้ ดูกรอานนท์ ท่านทั้งหลายพึง อนุเคราะห์คนใด และคนเหล่าใด เป็นมิตร อำมาตย์ ญาติหรือสาโลหิต พึงสำคัญว่าเป็นคำ ที่ควรฟัง คนเหล่า นั้น อันท่านทั้งหลายพึงชักชวน พึงให้ตั้งอยู่เสมอ พึงให้ดำรงอยู่ในฐานะ ๓ ประการนี้แล ฯ

    Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

    Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

    “Ye, ānanda, anukampeyyātha ye ca sotabbaṁ maññeyyuṁ mittā vā amaccā vā ñātī vā sālohitā vā te vo, ānanda, tīsu ṭhānesu samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiṭṭhāpetabbā.

    “Ānanda, those who you have sympathy for, and those worth listening to—friends and colleagues, relatives and family—should be encouraged, supported, and established in three things.

    ‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ, buddho bhagavā’ti,

    ‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those fit for training, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’

    dhamme aveccappasāde samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiṭṭhāpetabbā:

    Experiential confidence in the teaching:

    ‘svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiṭṭhiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī’ti,

    ‘The teaching is well explained by the Buddha—apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.’

    saṅghe aveccappasāde samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiṭṭhāpetabbā:

    ‘suppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho ujuppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho ñāyappaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho sāmīcippaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, yadidaṁ cattāri purisayugāni aṭṭha purisapuggalā esa bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo añjalikaraṇīyo anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassā’ti.

    ‘The Saṅgha of the Buddha’s disciples is practicing the way that’s good, direct, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individual persons. This is the Saṅgha of the Buddha’s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with cupped palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.’

    Siyā, ānanda, catunnaṁ mahābhūtānaṁ aññathattaṁ—

    There might be change in the four principal states—

    pathavīdhātuyā āpodhātuyā tejodhātuyā vāyodhātuyā, na tveva buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgatassa ariyasāvakassa siyā aññathattaṁ tatridaṁ aññathattaṁ.

    earth, water, air, and fire—but a noble disciple with experiential confidence in the Buddha would never change.

    So vatānanda, buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato ariyasāvako nirayaṁ vā tiracchānayoniṁ vā pettivisayaṁ vā upapajjissatīti netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati.

    In this context, ‘change’ means that such a noble disciple will be reborn in hell, the animal realm, or the ghost realm: this is quite impossible.

    Siyā, ānanda, catunnaṁ mahābhūtānaṁ aññathattaṁ—

    There might be change in the four principal states—
