เล่ม ๒๑ · หน้า ๑๔๒ณ ที่นั้นแล ท่านพระสารีบุตรเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายผู้มีอายุ ภิกษุเหล่านั้นรับคำของท่านพระสารีบุตรแล้ว ท่านพระสารีบุตรได้กล่าวว่า ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ผู้ใดผู้หนึ่งจะเป็นภิกษุหรือภิกษุณีก็ตามพิจารณาเห็นธรรม ๔ ประการในตน ผู้นั้นพึงถึงความตกลง ใจในข้อนี้ว่า เราย่อมเสื่อมจากกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย การมีธรรม ๔ ประการอยู่ในตนนี้ พระผู้มีพระภาค ตรัสว่าเป็นความเสื่อม ธรรม ๔ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ ความเป็นผู้มีราคะ ไพบูลย์ ๑ ความเป็น ผู้มีโทสะไพบูลย์ ๑ ความเป็นผู้มีโมหะไพบูลย์ ๑ และไม่มีปัญญาจักษุก้าวไปในฐานะ และอฐานะอัน ลึกซึ้ง ๑ ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ผู้ใดผู้หนึ่งจะเป็นภิกษุหรือภิกษุณีก็ตาม ย่อมพิจารณาเห็นธรรม ๔ ประการนี้ในตน ผู้นั้นพึงถึงความตกลงใจในข้อนี้ว่า เราย่อมเสื่อมจากกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย การมี ธรรม ๔ ประการอยู่ในตนนี้ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่าเป็นความเสื่อม ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ผู้ใด ผู้หนึ่งจะเป็นภิกษุหรือภิกษุณีก็ตาม พิจารณาเห็นธรรม ๔ ประการในตนผู้นั้นพึงถึงความตกลงใจ ในข้อนี้ว่า เราไม่เสื่อมจากกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย การมีธรรม ๔ ประการอยู่ในตนนี้ พระผู้มีพระภาค ตรัสว่าไม่เป็นความเสื่อม ธรรม๔ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ ความเป็นผู้มีราคะเบาบาง ๑ ความเป็น ผู้มีโทสะเบาบาง ๑ ความเป็นผู้มีโมหะเบาบาง ๑ และมีปัญญาจักษุก้าวไปในฐานะและอฐานะอัน ลึกซึ้ง ๑ ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ผู้ใดผู้หนึ่งจะเป็นภิกษุหรือภิกษุณีก็ตาม พิจารณาเห็นธรรม ๔ ประการนี้ในตน ผู้นั้นพึงถึงความตกลงใจในข้อนี้ว่า เราไม่เสื่อมจากกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย การมี ธรรม ๔ ประการอยู่ในตนนี้พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่าไม่เป็นความเสื่อม ฯ

Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū āmantesi:
There Sāriputta addressed the mendicants:

“āvuso bhikkhave”ti.
“Reverends, mendicants!”
- 1.3
“Āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato sāriputtassa paccassosuṁ.
“Reverend,” they replied.

Āyasmā sāriputto etadavoca:
Sāriputta said this:

“Yo hi koci, āvuso, bhikkhu vā bhikkhunī vā cattāro dhamme attani samanupassati, niṭṭhamettha gantabbaṁ:
“Reverends, any monk or nun who sees four things inside themselves should conclude:

‘parihāyāmi kusalehi dhammehi’.
‘My skillful qualities are declining.
- 2.3
Parihānametaṁ vuttaṁ bhagavatā.
For this is what the Buddha calls decline.’

Katame cattāro?
What four?
- 2.5
Rāgavepullattaṁ, dosavepullattaṁ, mohavepullattaṁ, gambhīresu kho panassa ṭhānāṭhānesu paññācakkhu na kamati.
They have much greed, much hate, and much delusion; and their wisdom eye doesn’t go into the many deep matters.

Yo hi koci, āvuso, bhikkhu vā bhikkhunī vā ime cattāro dhamme attani samanupassati, niṭṭhamettha gantabbaṁ:
Any monk or nun who sees these four things inside themselves should conclude:
- 2.7
‘parihāyāmi kusalehi dhammehi’.
‘My skillful qualities are declining.
- 2.8
Parihānametaṁ vuttaṁ bhagavatā.
For this is what the Buddha calls decline.’
