Five tricks used by thieves to hide, and similar tricks used by bad mendicants.

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

ข้อ ๑๐๓ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย มหาโจรประกอบด้วยองค์ ๕ ประการ ย่อมตัดที่ต่อบ้าง ย่อมปล้นทำลายบ้าง ย่อมทำการปล้น เฉพาะเรือนหลังเดียวบ้างตีชิงในทางเปลี่ยวบ้าง องค์ ๕

ประการเป็นไฉน คือ มหาโจรในโลกนี้เป็นผู้อาศัยที่ไม่ราบเรียบ ๑ เป็นผู้อาศัยที่รกชัฏ ๑

เป็นผู้อาศัยคนมีกำลัง ๑ เป็นผู้ใช้จ่ายโภคทรัพย์ ๑ เป็นผู้เที่ยวไปคนเดียว ๑ ฯ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็มหาโจรเป็นผู้อาศัยที่ไม่ราบเรียบอย่างไร คือ มหาโจรในโลกนี้ เป็นผู้อาศัยที่ลุ่มแห่งแม่น้ำ หรือที่ไม่ราบเรียบแห่งภูเขา ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย มหาโจรเป็นผู้อาศัยที่ ไม่ราบเรียบอย่างนี้แล ก็มหาโจรเป็นผู้อาศัยที่รกชัฏอย่างไร คือ มหาโจรในโลกนี้ เป็นผู้อาศัย ที่รกชัฏแห่งหญ้าบ้าง ที่รกชัฏแห่งต้นไม้บ้าง ฝั่งน้ำบ้าง ป่าใหญ่บ้าง ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย มหาโจร เป็นผู้อาศัยที่รกชัฏอย่างนี้แล ก็มหาโจรเป็นผู้อาศัยคนมีกำลังอย่างไร คือ มหาโจรในโลกนี้ ย่อมอาศัยพระราชาบ้าง มหาอำมาตย์แห่งพระราชาบ้าง เขาย่อมมีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่าถ้าใครจะ กล่าวหาเรื่องบางอย่างกะเรา พระราชาหรือมหาอำมาตย์แห่งพระราชาเหล่านี้จักช่วยว่าความให้

ถ้าใครจักกล่าวหาเรื่องบางอย่างกะเขา พระราชาหรือมหาอำมาตย์แห่งพระราชาเหล่านั้นก็ช่วยว่า ความให้แก่เขา ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย มหาโจรเป็นผู้อาศัยคนมีกำลังอย่างนี้แล ก็มหาโจรย่อมแจก จ่ายโภคทรัพย์อย่างไร คือมหาโจรในโลกนี้ เป็นผู้มั่งคั่ง มีทรัพย์มาก มีโภคะมาก เขาย่อม มีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า ถ้าใครจักกล่าวหาเรื่องบางอย่างกะเรา เราจักจ่ายโภคทรัพย์กลบเกลื่อนเรื่อง นั้น ถ้าใครกล่าวหาเรื่องบางอย่างกะเขา เขาย่อมใช้จ่ายโภคทรัพย์กลบเกลื่อนเรื่องนั้น ดูกรภิกษุ ทั้งหลาย มหาโจรเป็นผู้ใช้จ่ายโภคทรัพย์อย่างนี้แล ก็มหาโจรเป็นผู้เที่ยวไปคนเดียวอย่างไร คือ

มหาโจรในโลกนี้ เป็นผู้ทำโจรกรรมคนเดียวข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุไร เพราะเขาย่อมปรารถนาว่า เรื่องลับของเราอย่าได้แพร่งพรายไปภายนอก ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย มหาโจรเป็นผู้เที่ยวไปคนเดียว

เล่ม ๒๒ · หน้า ๑๑๔อย่างนี้แล มหาโจรผู้ประกอบด้วยองค์ ๕ ประการนี้แล ย่อมตัดที่ต่อบ้าง ย่อมปล้นทำลายบ้าง ย่อมปล้นเฉพาะเรือนหลังเดียวบ้าง ตีชิงในทางเปลี่ยวบ้าง ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน แล ปาปภิกษุผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕ ประการ ย่อมบริหารตนให้ถูกกำจัด ถูกทำลาย เป็นผู้มีโทษ

มีข้อที่วิญญูชนจะพึงติเตียน และย่อมประสบบาปเป็นอันมาก ธรรม ๕ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ ปาปภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้อาศัยกรรมที่ไม่สม่ำเสมอ ๑ เป็นผู้อาศัยที่รกชัฏ ๑ เป็นผู้อาศัยคน มีกำลัง ๑ เป็นผู้ใช้จ่ายโภคทรัพย์ ๑ เป็นผู้เที่ยวไปคนเดียว ๑ ฯ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ปาปภิกษุเป็นผู้อาศัยกรรมที่ไม่สม่ำเสมออย่างไร คือ ปาปภิกษุ ในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้ประกอบด้วยกายกรรม วจีกรรม มโนกรรม ที่ไม่สม่ำเสมอ ดูกรภิกษุ ทั้งหลาย ปาปภิกษุเป็นผู้อาศัยกรรมที่ไม่สม่ำเสมออย่างนี้แลก็ปาปภิกษุเป็นผู้อาศัยที่รกชัฏ อย่างไร คือ ปาปภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นมิจฉาทิฐิประกอบด้วยอันตคาหิกทิฐิ ดูกร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ปาปภิกษุเป็นผู้อาศัยที่รกชัฏอย่างนี้แล ก็ปาปภิกษุเป็นผู้อาศัยคนมีกำลังอย่างไร

คือ ปาปภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้อาศัยพระราชาบ้าง มหาอำมาตย์แห่งพระราชาบ้าง เธอมี ความคิดอย่างนี้ว่าถ้าใครจักกล่าวหาเรื่องบางอย่างกะเรา พระราชาหรือมหาอำมาตย์แห่งพระราชา เหล่านี้ จักช่วยว่าความให้ ถ้าใครกล่าวหาเรื่องบางอย่างแก่เธอ พระราชาหรือมหาอำมาตย์แห่ง พระราชาเหล่านั้น ย่อมช่วยว่าความให้แก่เธอ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายปาปภิกษุเป็นผู้อาศัยคนมีกำลัง อย่างนี้แล ก็ปาปภิกษุเป็นผู้ใช้จ่ายโภคทรัพย์อย่างไรคือ ปาปภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ ย่อมเป็นผู้ ได้จีวร บิณฑบาต เสนาสนะ และคิลานปัจจัยเภสัชบริขาร เธอย่อมมีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า ถ้า ใครจักกล่าวหาเรื่องบางอย่างกะเรา เราจักแจกจ่ายลาภกลบเกลื่อนเรื่องนั้น ถ้าใครกล่าวหาเรื่อง บางอย่างกะเธอ เธอย่อมแจกจ่ายลาภกลบเกลื่อนเรื่องนั้น ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ปาปภิกษุเป็นผู้ใช้ จ่ายโภคทรัพย์อย่างนี้แล ก็ปาปภิกษุเป็นผู้เที่ยวไปคนเดียวอย่างไร คือ ปาปภิกษุในธรรมวินัย นี้ ย่อมอยู่ชนบทชายแดนรูปเดียว เธอเข้าไปหาสกุล (บ้านญาติโยม) ในชนบทนั้น ย่อมได้ลาภ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ปาปภิกษุเป็นผู้เที่ยวไปคนเดียวอย่างนี้แล ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ปาปภิกษุผู้ ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕ ประการนี้แล ย่อมบริหารตนให้ถูกกำจัด ถูกทำลาย เป็นผู้มีโทษ มีข้อที่ วิญญูชนจะพึงติเตียน และประสบบาปเป็นอันมาก ฯ

    A Master Thief

    “Pañcahi, bhikkhave, aṅgehi samannāgato mahācoro sandhimpi chindati, nillopampi harati, ekāgārikampi karoti, paripanthepi tiṭṭhati.

    “Mendicants, a master thief with five factors breaks into houses, plunders wealth, steals from isolated buildings, and commits highway robbery.

    What five?

    Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro visamanissito ca hoti, gahananissito ca, balavanissito ca, bhogacāgī ca, ekacārī ca.

    A master thief relies on rough ground, on thick cover, and on the powerful; they pay bribes, and they act alone.

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, mahācoro visamanissito hoti?

    And how does a master thief rely on rough ground?

  8. 2.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro nadīviduggaṁ vā nissito hoti pabbatavisamaṁ vā.

    It’s when a master thief relies on inaccessible riverlands or rugged mountains.

    Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mahācoro visamanissito hoti.

    That’s how a master thief relies on rough ground.

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, mahācoro gahananissito hoti?

    And how does a master thief rely on thick cover?

  11. 3.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro tiṇagahanaṁ vā nissito hoti rukkhagahanaṁ vā rodhaṁ vā mahāvanasaṇḍaṁ vā.

    It’s when a master thief relies on thick grass, thick trees, a blind spot, or a large forest grove.

    Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mahācoro gahananissito hoti.

    That’s how a master thief relies on thick cover.

  13. 4.1

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, mahācoro balavanissito hoti?

    And how does a master thief rely on the powerful?

  14. 4.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro rājānaṁ vā rājamahāmattānaṁ vā nissito hoti.

    It’s when a master thief relies on rulers or their chief ministers.

  15. 4.3

    Tassa evaṁ hoti:

    They think:

    ‘sace maṁ koci kiñci vakkhati, ime me rājāno vā rājamahāmattā vā pariyodhāya atthaṁ bhaṇissantī’ti.

    ‘If anyone accuses me of anything, these rulers or their chief ministers will speak in my defense in the case.’

    Sace naṁ koci kiñci āha, tyassa rājāno vā rājamahāmattā vā pariyodhāya atthaṁ bhaṇanti.

    And that’s exactly what happens.

    Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mahācoro balavanissito hoti.

    That’s how a master thief relies on the powerful.

  19. 5.1

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, mahācoro bhogacāgī hoti?

    And how does a master thief pay bribes?

  20. 5.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro aḍḍho hoti mahaddhano mahābhogo.

    It’s when a master thief is rich, affluent, and wealthy.

  21. 5.3

    Tassa evaṁ hoti:

    They think:

    ‘sace maṁ koci kiñci vakkhati, ito bhogena paṭisantharissāmī’ti.

    ‘If anyone accuses me of anything, I’ll settle it with a bribe.’

  23. 5.5

    Sace naṁ koci kiñci āha, tato bhogena paṭisantharati.

    And that’s exactly what happens.

  24. 5.6

    Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mahācoro bhogacāgī hoti.

    That’s how a master thief pays bribes.

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, mahācoro ekacārī hoti?

    And how does a master thief act alone?

  26. 6.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro ekakova gahaṇāni kattā hoti.

    It’s when a master thief carries out robbery all alone.

  27. 6.3

    Taṁ kissa hetu?

    Why is that?

  28. 6.4

    ‘Mā me guyhamantā bahiddhā sambhedaṁ agamaṁsū’ti.

    So that their secret plans are not leaked to others.

  29. 6.5

    Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mahācoro ekacārī hoti.

    That’s how a master thief acts alone.

  30. 7.1

    Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahaṅgehi samannāgato mahācoro sandhimpi chindati nillopampi harati ekāgārikampi karoti paripanthepi tiṭṭhati.

    A master thief with these five factors breaks into houses, plunders wealth, steals from isolated buildings, and commits highway robbery.

  31. 8.1

    Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato pāpabhikkhu khataṁ upahataṁ attānaṁ pariharati, sāvajjo ca hoti sānuvajjo viññūnaṁ, bahuñca apuññaṁ pasavati.

    In the same way, when a bad mendicant has five qualities, they keep themselves broken and damaged. They deserve to be blamed and criticized by sensible people, and they brim with much wickedness.

    What five?

  33. 8.3

    Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu visamanissito ca hoti, gahananissito ca, balavanissito ca, bhogacāgī ca, ekacārī ca.

    A bad mendicant relies on rough ground, on thick cover, and on the powerful; they pay bribes, and they act alone.

  34. 9.1

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu visamanissito hoti?

    And how does a bad mendicant rely on rough ground?

  35. 9.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu visamena kāyakammena samannāgato hoti, visamena vacīkammena samannāgato hoti, visamena manokammena samannāgato hoti.

    It’s when a bad mendicant has unethical conduct by way of body, speech, and mind.

  36. 9.3

    Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu visamanissito hoti.

    That’s how a bad mendicant relies on rough ground.

  37. 10.1

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu gahananissito hoti?

    And how does a bad mendicant rely on thick cover?

  38. 10.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu micchādiṭṭhiko hoti antaggāhikāya diṭṭhiyā samannāgato.

    It’s when a bad mendicant has wrong view, he’s attached to an extremist view.

  39. 10.3

    Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu gahananissito hoti.

    That’s how a bad mendicant relies on thick cover.

  40. 11.1

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu balavanissito hoti?

    And how does a bad mendicant rely on the powerful?

  41. 11.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu rājānaṁ vā rājamahāmattānaṁ vā nissito hoti.

    It’s when a bad mendicant relies on rulers or their chief ministers.

  47. 12.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu lābhī hoti cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṁ.

    It’s when a bad mendicant receives robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick.

    Tassa evaṁ hoti:

    They think:

    ‘sace maṁ koci kiñci vakkhati, ito lābhena paṭisantharissāmī’ti.

    ‘If anyone accuses me of anything, I’ll settle it with a bribe.’

    Sace naṁ koci kiñci āha, tato lābhena paṭisantharati.

    And that’s exactly what happens.

  51. 12.6

    Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu bhogacāgī hoti.

    That’s how a bad mendicant pays bribes.

  52. 13.1

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu ekacārī hoti?

    And how does a bad mendicant act alone?

  53. 13.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu ekakova paccantimesu janapadesu nivāsaṁ kappeti.

    It’s when a bad mendicant dwells alone in the borderlands.

  54. 13.3

    So tattha kulāni upasaṅkamanto lābhaṁ labhati.

    They visit families there to acquire material things.

  55. 13.4

    Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu ekacārī hoti.

    That’s how a bad mendicant acts alone.

  56. 14.1

    Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato pāpabhikkhu khataṁ upahataṁ attānaṁ pariharati, sāvajjo ca hoti sānuvajjo viññūnaṁ, bahuñca apuññaṁ pasavatī”ti.

    When a bad mendicant possesses these five qualities, they keep themselves broken and damaged. They deserve to be blamed and criticized by sensible people, and they brim with much wickedness.”
