An outcaste is not born, but they make themselves an outcaste by their behavior.
ฉบับหลวงจัณฑาลสูตร
ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ข้อ ๑๗๕ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อุบาสกผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕ ประการ ย่อมเป็น อุบาสกผู้เลวทราม เศร้าหมอง และน่าเกลียด ธรรม ๕ ประการเป็นไฉนคือ อุบาสกเป็น

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อุบาสกผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕ ประการ ย่อมเป็นอุบาสกแก้ว อุบาสกปทุม อุบาสกบุณฑริก ธรรม ๕ ประการเป็นไฉน คืออุบาสกย่อมเป็นผู้มีศรัทธา ๑ เป็นผู้มีศีล ๑ เป็นผู้ไม่ถือมงคลตื่นข่าว เชื่อกรรมไม่เชื่อมงคล ๑ ไม่แสวงหาเขตบุญภายนอก ศาสนา ๑ ทำการสนับสนุนในศาสนา ๑ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อุบาสกผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕

“Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato upāsako upāsakacaṇḍālo ca hoti upāsakamalañca upāsakapatikuṭṭho ca.
“Mendicants, a lay follower with five qualities is a corpse-worker, a stain, and a reject among lay followers.

Katamehi pañcahi?
What five?
- 1.3
Assaddho hoti;
They’re faithless.
- 1.4
dussīlo hoti;
They’re unethical.
- 1.5
kotūhalamaṅgaliko hoti, maṅgalaṁ pacceti no kammaṁ;
They follow boisterous, superstitious rites, believing in omens rather than deeds.
- 1.6
ito ca bahiddhā dakkhiṇeyyaṁ gavesati;
They seek outside of the Buddhist community for those worthy of religious donations.

tattha ca pubbakāraṁ karoti.
And they make offerings there first.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato upāsako upāsakacaṇḍālo ca hoti upāsakamalañca upāsakapatikuṭṭho ca.
A lay follower with these five qualities is a corpse-worker, a stain, and a reject among lay followers.

Saddho hoti;
They’re faithful.

sīlavā hoti;
They’re ethical.

akotūhalamaṅgaliko hoti, kammaṁ pacceti no maṅgalaṁ;
They don’t practice boisterous, superstitious rites, and believe in deeds rather than omens.

na ito bahiddhā dakkhiṇeyyaṁ gavesati;
They don’t seek outside of the Buddhist community for those worthy of religious donations.
