เล่ม ๒๒ · หน้า ๒ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย กำลังของเสขบุคคล ๕ ประการนี้ ๕ ประการนี้เป็นไฉน คือ กำลัง คือ ศรัทธา กำลัง คือ หิริ กำลัง คือ โอตตัปปะ กำลัง คือ วิริยะ กำลัง คือ ปัญญา ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็กำลัง คือ ศรัทธาเป็นไฉน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสาวก ในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีศรัทธา ย่อมเชื่อพระปัญญาเครื่องตรัสรู้ของตถาคตว่า แม้เพราะเหตุ นี้ๆ พระผู้มีพระภาคพระองค์นั้น เป็นพระอรหันต์ ตรัสรู้เองโดยชอบ ถึงพร้อมด้วยวิชชา และจรณะ เสด็จไปดีแล้วทรงรู้แจ้งโลก เป็นสารถีฝึกบุรุษที่ควรฝึก ไม่มีผู้อื่นจะยิ่งกว่า เป็นศาสดาของเทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลาย เป็นผู้เบิกบานแล้ว เป็นผู้จำแนกธรรม นี้เรียกว่า กำลังคือ ศรัทธา ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็กำลัง คือ หิริเป็นไฉน อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีหิริ ย่อมละอายต่อกายทุจริต วจีทุจริต มโนทุจริต ย่อมละอายต่อการประกอบธรรม อันเป็นบาปอกุศล นี้เรียกว่ากำลัง คือ หิริ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็กำลัง คือ โอตตัปปะเป็น ไฉน อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีโอตตัปปะ ย่อมสะดุ้งกลัวต่อกายทุจริต วจีทุจริต มโนทุจริต ย่อมสะดุ้งกลัวต่อการประกอบธรรมอันเป็นบาปอกุศล นี้เรียกว่ากำลัง คือ โอต ตัปปะ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็กำลัง คือวิริยะเป็นไฉน อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ ย่อม ปรารภความเพียร เพื่อละอกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย เพื่อยังกุศลธรรมให้ถึงพร้อม เป็นผู้มีกำลัง
มีความบากบั่นมั่นคงไม่ทอดทิ้งธุระในกุศลธรรม นี้เรียกว่า กำลัง คือ วิริยะ ดูกรภิกษุ ทั้งหลาย ก็กำลัง คือ ปัญญาเป็นไฉน อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีปัญญา ประกอบ ด้วยปัญญาเครื่องหยั่งถึงความเกิดขึ้นและดับ เป็นอริยะ ชำแรกกิเลสเป็นเครื่องให้ถึงความสิ้น ไปแห่งทุกข์โดยชอบ นี้เรียกว่ากำลัง คือ ปัญญา ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายกำลังของพระเสขบุคคล ๕ ประการนี้แล ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะเหตุนั้นแหละเธอทั้งหลายพึงศึกษาอย่างนี้ว่า พวกเราจักเป็นผู้ประกอบด้วยกำลัง คือ ศรัทธากำลัง คือ หิริ กำลัง คือ โอตตัปปะ กำลัง คือ วิริยะ กำลัง คือ ปัญญา อันเป็นกำลังของพระเสขบุคคล ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เธอ ทั้งหลายพึงศึกษาอย่างนี้แล ฯ

Saddhābalaṁ, hirībalaṁ, ottappabalaṁ, vīriyabalaṁ, paññābalaṁ.
The powers of faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, saddhābalaṁ?
And what is the power of faith?
- 2.2
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiṁ:
It’s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized One’s awakening:
- 2.3
‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti.
‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those fit for training, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhābalaṁ.
This is called the power of faith.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, hirībalaṁ?
And what is the power of conscience?
- 3.2
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako hirīmā hoti, hirīyati kāyaduccaritena vacīduccaritena manoduccaritena, hirīyati pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ samāpattiyā.
It’s when a noble disciple has a conscience. They’re conscientious about bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and conscientious about having any bad, unskillful qualities.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, hirībalaṁ.
This is called the power of conscience.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, ottappabalaṁ?
And what is the power of prudence?
- 4.2
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako ottappī hoti, ottappati kāyaduccaritena vacīduccaritena manoduccaritena, ottappati pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ samāpattiyā.
It’s when a noble disciple is prudent. They’re prudent when it comes to bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and prudent when it comes to acquiring any bad, unskillful qualities.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ottappabalaṁ.
This is called the power of prudence.
- 5.1
Katamañca, bhikkhave, vīriyabalaṁ?
And what is the power of energy?
- 5.2
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako āraddhavīriyo viharati akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya, kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ upasampadāya, thāmavā daḷhaparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu.
It’s when a noble disciple lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. They’re strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vīriyabalaṁ.
This is called the power of energy.
- 6.1
Katamañca, bhikkhave, paññābalaṁ?
And what is the power of wisdom?
- 6.2
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako paññavā hoti udayatthagāminiyā paññāya samannāgato ariyāya nibbedhikāya sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyā.
It’s when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, paññābalaṁ.
This is called the power of wisdom.
- 6.4
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca sekhabalāni.
These are the five powers of a trainee.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ:
So you should train like this:
- 7.2
‘saddhābalena samannāgatā bhavissāma sekhabalena, hirībalena … ottappabalena … vīriyabalena … paññābalena samannāgatā bhavissāma sekhabalenā’ti.
‘We will have the trainee’s powers of faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom.’
- 7.3
Evañhi kho, bhikkhave, sikkhitabban”ti.
That’s how you should train.”
