AN 6.59

Dārukammikasutta

The householder Dārukammika claims to give gifts to arahants. But the Buddha warns him that it’s hard to know who is really an arahant, and encourage him instead to make offerings to the Saṅgha.

ข้อ ๓๓๐สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่ปราสาทสร้างด้วยอิฐใกล้นาทิกคาม ครั้งนั้น คฤหบดีชื่อทารุกัมมิกะ (พ่อค้าฟืน) เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ถวายบังคม แล้วนั่ง ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่ง ครั้นแล้วพระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสถามว่า ดูกรคฤหบดี ทานใน สกุล ท่านยังให้อยู่หรือคฤหบดีชื่อทารุกัมมิกะได้กราบทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ข้าพระองค์ยัง ให้อยู่และทานนั้นแล ข้าพระองค์ให้ในภิกษุผู้เป็นอรหันต์ หรือผู้บรรลุอรหัตมรรค ผู้ถืออยู่ป่า เป็นวัตร ผู้ถือเที่ยวบิณฑบาตเป็นวัตร ผู้ถือผ้าบังสุกุลเป็นวัตร ฯ

พ. ดูกรคฤหบดี ท่านผู้เป็นคฤหัสถ์ บริโภคกาม อยู่ครองเรือน นอนเบียดเสียด บุตร บริโภคจันทน์แคว้นกาสี ทัดทรงดอกไม้ ของหอมและเครื่องลูบไล้ ยินดีทองและเงินอยู่ พึงรู้ข้อนี้ได้ยากว่า ภิกษุเหล่านี้เป็นพระอรหันต์หรือเป็นผู้บรรลุอรหัตมรรค ดูกรคฤหบดี ถ้า แม้ภิกษุผู้ถืออยู่ป่าเป็นวัตร เป็นผู้ฟุ้งซ่าน ถือตัว เห่อ ปากกล้า พูดพล่าม มีสติเลอะเลือน

ไม่มีสัมปชัญญะมีใจไม่ตั้งมั่น มีจิตพลุ่งพล่าน ไม่สำรวมอินทรีย์ เมื่อเป็นอย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นพึง ถูกติเตียนด้วยเหตุนั้น ถ้าแม้ภิกษุผู้ถืออยู่ป่าเป็นวัตร เป็นผู้ไม่ฟุ้งซ่าน ไม่ถือตัว ไม่เห่อ ไม่ ปากกล้า ไม่พูดพล่าม มีสติตั้งมั่น มีสัมปชัญญะ มีใจตั้งมั่น มีจิตมีอารมณ์เป็นหนึ่ง สำรวม อินทรีย์ เมื่อเป็นอย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นพึงได้รับสรรเสริญด้วยเหตุนั้น ถ้าแม้ภิกษุผู้อยู่ใกล้บ้าน เป็น ผู้ฟุ้งซ่าน ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นอย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นพึงถูกติเตียนด้วยเหตุนั้น ถ้าแม้ภิกษุผู้อยู่ใกล้บ้าน

เล่ม ๒๒ · หน้า ๓๕๒เป็นผู้ไม่ฟุ้งซ่าน ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นอย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นพึงได้รับสรรเสริญด้วยเหตุนั้น ถ้าแม้ภิกษุผู้ถือเที่ยว บิณฑบาตเป็นวัตร เป็นผู้ฟุ้งซ่าน ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นอย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นพึงถูกติเตียนด้วยเหตุนั้นถ้า แม้ภิกษุผู้ถือเที่ยวบิณฑบาตเป็นวัตร เป็นผู้ไม่ฟุ้งซ่าน ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นอย่างนี้ภิกษุนั้นพึงได้รับ สรรเสริญด้วยเหตุนั้น ถ้าแม้ภิกษุผู้รับนิมนต์ เป็นผู้ฟุ้งซ่าน ฯลฯเมื่อเป็นอย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นพึง ถูกติเตียนด้วยเหตุนั้น ถ้าแม้ภิกษุผู้รับนิมนต์ เป็นผู้ไม่ฟุ้งซ่าน ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นอย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้น พึงได้รับสรรเสริญด้วยเหตุนั้น ถ้าแม้ภิกษุผู้ถือผ้าบังสุกุลเป็นวัตร เป็นผู้ฟุ้งซ่าน ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็น อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นพึงถูกติเตียนด้วยเหตุนั้น ถ้าแม้ภิกษุผู้ถือผ้าบังสุกุลเป็นวัตร เป็นผู้ไม่ฟุ้งซ่าน ฯลฯเมื่อเป็นอย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นพึงได้รับสรรเสริญด้วยเหตุนั้น ถ้าแม้ภิกษุผู้ทรงคฤหบดีจีวร เป็น ผู้ฟุ้งซ่าน ถือตัว เห่อ ปากกล้า พูดพล่าม มีสติเลอะเลือน ไม่มีสัมปชัญญะ มีใจไม่ตั้งมั่น มีจิตพลุ่งพล่าน ไม่สำรวมอินทรีย์ เมื่อเป็นอย่างนี้ภิกษุนั้นพึงถูกติเตียนด้วยเหตุนั้น ถ้าแม้ ภิกษุผู้ทรงคฤหบดีจีวร เป็นผู้ไม่ฟุ้งซ่านไม่ถือตัว ไม่เห่อ ไม่ปากกล้า ไม่พูดพล่าม มีสติตั้ง มั่น มีสัมปชัญญะ มีใจตั้งมั่น มีจิตมีอารมณ์เป็นหนึ่ง สำรวมอินทรีย์ เมื่อเป็นอย่างนี้ ภิกษุ นั้นพึงได้รับสรรเสริญด้วยเหตุนั้น ดูกรคฤหบดี เชิญท่านให้สังฆทานเถิด เมื่อท่านให้สังฆทาน อยู่ จิตจักเลื่อมใส ท่านนั้นเป็นผู้มีจิตเลื่อมใส เมื่อตายไป จักเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ คฤหบดีชื่อ ทารุกัมมิกะ ทูลสนองว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญข้าพระองค์นี้จักให้สังฆทานตั้งแต่วันนี้เป็นต้นไป ฯ

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

    So I have heard.

  5. 1.2

    ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā nātike viharati giñjakāvasathe.

    At one time the Buddha was staying at Ñātika in the brick house.

    Atha kho dārukammiko gahapati yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho dārukammikaṁ gahapatiṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

    Then the householder Dārukammika went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him,

    “api nu te, gahapati, kule dānaṁ dīyatī”ti?

    “Householder, I wonder whether your family gives gifts?”

    “Dīyati me, bhante, kule dānaṁ.

    “It does, sir.

    Tañca kho ye te bhikkhū āraññikā piṇḍapātikā paṁsukūlikā arahanto vā arahattamaggaṁ vā samāpannā, tathārūpesu me, bhante, bhikkhūsu dānaṁ dīyatī”ti.

    Gifts are given to those mendicants who are perfected or on the path to perfection; they live in the wilderness, eat only almsfood, and wear rag robes.”

    “Dujjānaṁ kho etaṁ, gahapati, tayā gihinā kāmabhoginā puttasambādhasayanaṁ ajjhāvasantena, kāsikacandanaṁ paccanubhontena, mālāgandhavilepanaṁ dhārayantena, jātarūparajataṁ sādiyantena ime vā arahanto ime vā arahattamaggaṁ samāpannāti.

    “Householder, as a layman enjoying sensual pleasures, living at home with your children, using sandalwood imported from Kāsi, wearing garlands, fragrance, and makeup, and accepting gold and currency, it’s hard for you to know who is perfected or on the path to perfection.

    Āraññiko cepi, gahapati, bhikkhu hoti uddhato unnaḷo capalo mukharo vikiṇṇavāco muṭṭhassati asampajāno asamāhito vibbhantacitto pākatindriyo.

    If a mendicant living in the wilderness is haughty, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, loose-tongued, unmindful, lacking situational awareness and immersion, with straying mind and undisciplined faculties,

    Evaṁ so tenaṅgena gārayho.

    then in this respect they’re reprehensible.

    Āraññiko cepi, gahapati, bhikkhu hoti anuddhato anunnaḷo acapalo amukharo avikiṇṇavāco upaṭṭhitassati sampajāno samāhito ekaggacitto saṁvutindriyo.

    If a mendicant living in the wilderness is not haughty, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, or loose-tongued, but has established mindfulness, situational awareness and immersion, with unified mind and restrained faculties,

    Evaṁ so tenaṅgena pāsaṁso.

    then in this respect they’re praiseworthy.

    Evaṁ so tenaṅgena pāsaṁso.

    then in this respect they’re praiseworthy.

    Iṅgha tvaṁ, gahapati, saṅghe dānaṁ dehi.

    Go ahead, householder, give gifts to the Saṅgha.

  36. 9.2

    Saṅghe te dānaṁ dadato cittaṁ pasīdissati.

    Your mind will become bright and clear,

  37. 9.3

    So tvaṁ pasannacitto kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjissasī”ti.

    and when your body breaks up, after death, you’ll be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.”

  38. 9.4

    “Esāhaṁ, bhante, ajjatagge saṅghe dānaṁ dassāmī”ti.

    “Sir, from this day forth I will give gifts to the Saṅgha.”
