ข้อ ๒๗ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ธรรม ๗ ประการนี้ ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อความเสื่อมแก่อุบาสก
๗ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ อุบาสกขาดการเยี่ยมเยียนภิกษุ ๑ละเลยการฟังธรรม ๑ ไม่ศึกษา ในอธิศีล ๑ ไม่มากด้วยความเลื่อมใสในภิกษุทั้งที่เป็นเถระ ทั้งเป็นผู้ใหม่ ทั้งปานกลาง ๑ ตั้งจิตติเตียนคอยเพ่งโทษฟังธรรม ๑แสวงหาเขตบุญภายนอกศาสนานี้ ๑ ทำสักการะก่อน ในเขตบุญภายนอกศาสนานี้ ๑ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ธรรม ๗ ประการนี้แล ย่อมเป็นไป เพื่อความเสื่อมแก่อุบาสกดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ธรรม ๗ ประการนี้ ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อความ ไม่เสื่อมแก่อุบาสก๗ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ อุบาสกไม่ขาดการเยี่ยมเยียนภิกษุ ๑ ไม่ละเลย การฟังธรรม ๑ ศึกษาในอธิศีล ๑ มากด้วยความเลื่อมใสในภิกษุทั้งที่เป็นเถระ ทั้งเป็นผู้ใหม่ ทั้งปานกลาง ๑ ไม่ตั้งจิตติเตียน ไม่คอยเพ่งโทษฟังธรรม ๑ ไม่แสวงหาเขตบุญภายนอกศาสนา นี้ ๑ กระทำสักการะก่อนในเขตบุญในศาสนานี้ ๑ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ธรรม ๗ ประการนี้แล ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อความไม่เสื่อมแก่อุบาสก ฯ
อุบาสกใดขาดการเยี่ยมเยียนภิกษุผู้อบรมตน ละเลยการฟัง
อริยธรรม ไม่ศึกษาในอธิศีล มีความไม่เลื่อมใสเจริญยิ่งๆ
ขึ้นไป ในภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตั้งจิตติเตียนปรารถนาฟังสัทธรรม
แสวงหาเขตบุญอื่นภายนอกศาสนานี้ และกระทำสักการะ
ก่อนในเขตบุญภายนอกศาสนานี้ อุบาสกนั้นซ่องเสพธรรม
อันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งความเสื่อม อันเราแสดงแล้ว ๗ ประการ

ในอธิศีล มีความเลื่อมใสเจริญยิ่งๆ ขึ้นไปในภิกษุทั้งหลาย
ไม่ตั้งจิตติเตียนปรารถนาฟังสัทธรรม ไม่แสวงหาเขตบุญอื่น
ภายนอกศาสนานี้ และกระทำสักการะก่อนในเขตบุญใน
ศาสนานี้ อุบาสกนั้นซ่องเสพธรรมอันไม่เป็นที่ตั้งแห่ง
ความเสื่อม อันเราแสดงดีแล้ว ๗ ประการนี้แล ย่อมไม่

Non-decline for a Lay Follower

“Sattime, bhikkhave, dhammā upāsakassa parihānāya saṁvattanti.
“These seven things lead to the decline of a lay follower.

What seven?
- 1.3
Bhikkhudassanaṁ hāpeti,
They miss out on seeing the mendicants.
- 1.4
saddhammassavanaṁ pamajjati,
They neglect listening to the true teaching.
- 1.5
adhisīle na sikkhati,
They don’t train in higher ethical conduct.
- 1.6
appasādabahulo hoti,
They’re very suspicious about mendicants, whether senior, junior, or middle.
- 1.7
bhikkhūsu theresu ceva navesu ca majjhimesu ca upārambhacitto dhammaṁ suṇāti randhagavesī,
They listen to the teaching with a hostile, fault-finding mind.
- 1.8
ito bahiddhā dakkhiṇeyyaṁ gavesati,
They seek outside of the Buddhist community for those worthy of religious donations.
- 1.9
tattha ca pubbakāraṁ karoti.
And they serve them first.
- 1.10
Ime kho, bhikkhave, satta dhammā upāsakassa parihānāya saṁvattanti.
These seven things lead to the decline of a lay follower.

They don’t neglect listening to the true teaching.

They train in higher ethical conduct.

pasādabahulo hoti,
They’re very confident about mendicants, whether senior, junior, or middle.

Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:

“Dassanaṁ bhāvitattānaṁ,
“A lay follower misses out on seeing
- 3.2
Yo hāpeti upāsako;
those who are evolved
- 3.3
Savanañca ariyadhammānaṁ,
and listening to the teachings of the Noble One.

Adhisīle na sikkhati.
They don’t train in higher ethical conduct,
- 4.1
Appasādo ca bhikkhūsu,
and their suspicion about mendicants
- 4.2
bhiyyo bhiyyo pavaḍḍhati;
just grows and grows.
- 4.3
Upārambhakacitto ca,
They want to listen to the true teaching
- 4.4
saddhammaṁ sotumicchati.
with a fault-finding mind.
- 5.1
Ito ca bahiddhā aññaṁ,
They seek outside the Buddhist community
- 5.2
dakkhiṇeyyaṁ gavesati;
for someone else worthy of religious donations,
- 5.3
Tattheva ca pubbakāraṁ,
and that lay follower
- 5.4
yo karoti upāsako.
serves them first.
- 6.1
Ete kho parihāniye,
These seven principles leading to decline

satta dhamme sudesite;
have been well taught.

Upāsako sevamāno,
A lay follower who practices them

saddhammā parihāyati.
falls away from the true teaching.

Dassanaṁ bhāvitattānaṁ,
A lay follower doesn’t miss out on seeing

those who are evolved

and listening to the teachings of the Noble One.

and their confidence in mendicants

just grows and grows.

They want to listen to the true teaching
