ประการเป็นไฉน คือ รู้จักอาบัติ ๑ รู้จักอนาบัติ ๑ รู้จักอาบัติเบา ๑ รู้จักอาบัติหนัก ๑
เป็นผู้มีศีลสำรวมระวังในพระปาติโมกข์ ถึงพร้อมด้วยมรรยาทและโคจร มีปรกติเห็นภัยในโทษ เพียงเล็กน้อย สมาทานศึกษาอยู่ในสิกขาบททั้งหลาย ๑ มีปรกติได้ตามความปรารถนา ได้โดย ไม่ยาก ไม่ลำบาก ซึ่งฌาณ ๔ อันมีในจิตยิ่ง เป็นเครื่องอยู่เป็นสุขในปัจจุบัน ๑ ทำให้แจ้ง ซึ่งเจโตวิมุติ ปัญญาวิมุติ อันหาอาสวะมิได้ เพราะอาสวะทั้งหลายสิ้นไป ด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเอง ในปัจจุบัน เข้าถึงอยู่ ๑ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๗ ประการนี้แล เป็น วินัยธรได้ ฯ

An Expert in the Monastic Law (1st)

“Sattahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu vinayadharo hoti.
“Mendicants, a mendicant with seven qualities is an expert in the monastic law.

Katamehi sattahi?
What seven?
- 1.3
Āpattiṁ jānāti,
They know what is an offense.
- 1.4
anāpattiṁ jānāti,
They know what is not an offense.
- 1.5
lahukaṁ āpattiṁ jānāti,
They know what is a light offense.
- 1.6
garukaṁ āpattiṁ jānāti,
They know what is a serious offense.
- 1.7
sīlavā hoti pātimokkhasaṁvarasaṁvuto viharati ācāragocarasampanno aṇumattesu vajjesu bhayadassāvī samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu,
They’re ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken.

catunnaṁ jhānānaṁ ābhicetasikānaṁ diṭṭhadhammasukhavihārānaṁ nikāmalābhī hoti akicchalābhī akasiralābhī,
They get the four absorptions—blissful meditations in this life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty.

āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati.
They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom, and live having realized it with their own insight in this very life due to the ending of defilements.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, sattahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu vinayadharo hotī”ti.
A mendicant with these seven qualities is an expert in the monastic law.”
