ข้าพเจ้าได้สดับมาแล้วอย่างนี้:
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระวิหารเชตวันอารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี. ณ ที่นั้น ท่านพระสารีบุตรเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายแล้ว ภิกษุพวกนั้นรับคำท่านพระสารีบุตรแล้ว.
ท่านพระสารีบุตรได้กล่าวคำนี้ว่า ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ที่เรียกว่า สัมมาทิฏฐิๆ ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่าไรหนอ อริยสาวกจึงจะชื่อว่าเป็นสัมมาทิฏฐิ มีความเห็นดำเนินไปตรงแล้ว ประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอันแน่วแน่ในธรรม มาสู่พระสัทธรรมนี้.
ภิกษุเหล่านั้นชื่นชม อนุโมทนาภาษิตของท่านพระสารีบุตรว่า สาธุ ท่านผู้มีอายุ แล้วได้ถามปัญหากะท่านพระสารีบุตรต่อไปว่า ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุ จะพึงมีอยู่หรือปริยายแม้อย่างอื่น ที่อริยสาวกซึ่งชื่อว่าเป็นสัมมาทิฏฐิ มีความเห็นดำเนินไปตรงแล้ว ประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอันแน่วแน่ในธรรม มาสู่พระสัทธรรมนี้.
อาหารวาร
ท่านพระสารีบุตรตอบว่า พึงมีอยู่ ท่านผู้มีอายุ เมื่อใดอริยสาวกรู้ชัดซึ่งอาหาร เหตุเกิดแห่งอาหาร ความดับอาหาร และทางที่จะให้ถึงความดับอาหาร แม้ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้ อริยสาวกชื่อว่าเป็นสัมมาทิฏฐิ ... มาสู่พระสัทธรรมนี้. ก็อาหาร เหตุเกิดแห่งอาหาร ความดับอาหาร ทางที่จะให้ถึงความดับอาหาร เป็นไฉน? ได้แก่อาหาร ๔ อย่างเหล่านี้ เพื่อความดำรงอยู่ของหมู่สัตว์ผู้เกิดแล้ว หรือเพื่ออนุเคราะห์เหล่าสัตว์ผู้แสวงหาที่เกิด. อาหาร ๔ อย่างเป็นไฉน? คือ
๑ อาหาร คือ คำข้าว หยาบหรือละเอียด
๒ อาหาร คือ ผัสสะ
๓ อาหาร คือ ความคิดอ่าน
๔ อาหาร คือ วิญญาณ
เหตุเกิดแห่งอาหารย่อมมีเพราะตัณหาเป็นเหตุให้เกิด ความดับอาหารย่อมมีเพราะตัณหา ดับ อริยมรรคประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘ นี้แหละ คือ ความเห็นชอบ ดำริชอบ เจรจาชอบ การงานชอบ เลี้ยงชีพชอบ พยายามชอบ ระลึกชอบ ตั้งใจชอบ ชื่อว่าทางที่จะให้ถึงความดับอาหาร ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุ เมื่อใด อริยสาวกรู้ชัดซึ่งอาหาร เหตุเกิดแห่งอาหาร ความดับอาหาร ทางที่จะให้ถึงความดับอาหารอย่างนี้ๆ เมื่อนั้น ท่านละราคานุสัย บรรเทาปฏิฆานุสัย ถอนทิฏฐานุสัย และมานานุสัย ว่าเรามีอยู่ โดยประการทั้งปวง ละอวิชชา ยังวิชชาให้เกิด ย่อมกระทำที่สุดแห่งทุกข์ในปัจจุบันนี้เทียว แม้ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้ อริยสาวกชื่อว่าเป็นสัมมาทิฏฐิ มีความเห็นดำเนินไปตรงแล้ว ประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอันแน่วแน่ในธรรม มาสู่พระสัทธรรมนี้.

สัจจวาร
ท่านพระสารีบุตรตอบว่า พึงมีอยู่ ท่านผู้มีอายุ เมื่อใดอริยสาวกรู้ชัดซึ่งทุกข์ ทุกขสมุทัย ทุกขนิโรธ ทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทา แม้ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้ อริยสาวกชื่อว่าเป็น สัมมาทิฏฐิ ... มาสู่พระสัทธรรมนี้. ก็ทุกข์เป็นไฉน? ได้แก่ ความเกิด ความแก่ ความตาย ความแห้งใจ ความพิไรรำพัน ความไม่สบายกาย ความเสียใจ ความคับแค้นใจ ความประจวบกับสิ่งไม่เป็นที่รัก ความพลัดพรากจากสิ่งเป็นที่รัก ปรารถนาสิ่งใดไม่ได้สมหวัง แต่ละอย่างๆ ล้วนเป็นทุกข์ โดยย่อ อุปาทานขันธ์ทั้ง ๕ เป็นทุกข์ อันนี้เรียกว่า ความทุกข์ ก็ทุกขสมุทัยเป็นไฉน? ได้แก่ ตัณหาอันทำให้เกิดในภพใหม่ ประกอบด้วยความกำหนัด ด้วยสามารถแห่งความเพลิน เพลิดเพลินยิ่งในอารมณ์นั้นๆ คือ กามตัณหา ภวตัณหา วิภวตัณหา อันนี้เรียกว่า ทุกขสมุทัย ทุกขนิโรธเป็นไฉน? ได้แก่ความดับด้วยสามารถแห่งความสำรอกโดยไม่เหลือ ความสละ ความวาง ความปล่อย ความไม่พัวพัน แห่งตัณหานั้นแหละ อันนี้เรียกว่า ทุกขนิโรธ. ทุกขนิโรธ คามินีปฏิปทาเป็นไฉน? ได้แก่ อริยมรรคประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘ นี้แหละ คือ ความเห็นชอบ ... ความตั้งใจชอบ อันนี้เรียกว่า ทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทา. ดูกรผู้มีอายุ เมื่อใด อริยสาวกรู้ชัดซึ่งทุกข์ ทุกขสมุทัย ทุกขนิโรธ ทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทาอย่างนี้ๆ เมื่อนั้น ท่านละราคานุสัย ... แม้ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้ อริยสาวกชื่อว่าเป็นสัมมาทิฏฐิ มีความเห็นดำเนินไปตรงแล้ว ประกอบด้วยความ เลื่อมใสอันแน่วแน่ในธรรม มาสู่พระสัทธรรมนี้.

ภิกษุเหล่านั้น ชื่นชม อนุโมทนาภาษิตของท่านพระสารีบุตรว่า สาธุ ท่านผู้มีอายุ แล้วได้ถามปัญหากะท่านพระสารีบุตรต่อไปว่า ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุ จะพึงมีอยู่หรือ ปริยายแม้อย่างอื่น อริยสาวก ... มาสู่พระสัทธรรมนี้.
ท่านพระสารีบุตรตอบว่า พึงมีอยู่ ท่านผู้มีอายุ เมื่อใดอริยสาวกรู้ชัดซึ่งชราและมรณะ เหตุเกิดแห่งชราและมรณะ ความดับชราและมรณะ และทางที่จะให้ถึงความดับชราและมรณะ แม้ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้ อริยสาวกชื่อว่าเป็นสัมมาทิฏฐิ ... มาสู่พระสัทธรรมนี้. ก็ชรา และมรณะ เหตุเกิดแห่งชราและมรณะ ความดับชราและมรณะ ทางที่จะให้ถึงความดับชราและมรณะ เป็นไฉน? ได้แก่ความแก่ ความคร่ำคร่า ฟันหลุด ผมหงอก หนังย่น ความเสื่อมแห่งอายุ ความแก่หง่อมแห่งอินทรีย์ ในหมู่สัตว์นั้นๆ ของเหล่าสัตว์นั้นๆ อันนี้เรียกว่าชรา ความจุติ ความเคลื่อนไป ความแตกทำลาย ความหายไป มฤตยู ความตาย ความทำกาละ ความแตกแห่งขันธ์ ความทิ้งซากศพไว้ ความขาดไปแห่งชีวิตินทรีย์จากหมู่สัตว์นั้นๆ ของเหล่าสัตว์นั้นๆ อันนี้เรียกว่ามรณะ ชราและมรณะ ดังพรรณนามาฉะนี้ เรียกว่า ชราและมรณะ เหตุเกิดแห่งชราและมรณะ ย่อมมีเพราะชาติเป็นเหตุให้เกิด ความดับชราและมรณะ ย่อมมีเพราะชาติดับ อริยมรรคประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘ นี้แหละ คือ ความเห็นชอบ ... ความตั้งใจชอบ ชื่อว่าปฏิปทาที่จะให้ ถึงความดับชราและมรณะ. ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุ เมื่อใดแล อริยสาวกรู้ชัดซึ่งชราและมรณะ เหตุเกิดแห่งชราและมรณะ ความดับชราและมรณะ และปฏิปทาที่จะให้ถึงความดับแห่งชราและมรณะ อย่างนี้ๆ เมื่อนั้น ท่านละราคานุสัย ฯลฯ แม้ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้ อริยสาวกชื่อว่าเป็นสัมมาทิฏฐิ มีความเห็นดำเนินไปตรงแล้ว ประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอันแน่วแน่ในธรรม มาสู่พระสัทธรรมนี้.

ภิกษุเหล่านั้น ชื่นชม อนุโมทนาภาษิตของท่านพระสารีบุตรว่า สาธุ ท่านผู้มีอายุ แล้วได้ถามปัญหากะท่านพระสารีบุตรต่อไปว่า ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุ จะพึงมีอยู่หรือปริยายแม้อย่างอื่น ที่อริยสาวกซึ่งชื่อว่าเป็นสัมมาทิฏฐิ มีความเห็นดำเนินไปตรงแล้ว ประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอันแน่วแน่ในธรรม มาสู่พระสัทธรรมนี้.
อาสววาร
ท่านพระสารีบุตรตอบว่า พึงมี ท่านผู้มีอายุ เมื่อใดแล อริยสาวกรู้ชัดซึ่งอาสวะ อาสวสมุทัย อาสวนิโรธ อาสวนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทา แม้ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้ อริยสาวกชื่อว่า เป็นสัมมาทิฏฐิ มีความเห็นดำเนินไปตรงแล้ว ประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอันแน่วแน่ในธรรม มาสู่พระสัทธรรมนี้. ก็อาสวะ เหตุเกิดแห่งอาสวะ ความดับอาสวะ ทางที่จะให้ถึงความดับอาสวะ เป็นไฉน? ได้แก่ อาสวะ ๓ เหล่านี้ คือ กามาสวะ ภวาสวะ อวิชชาสวะ เหตุเกิดแห่งอาสวะ ย่อมมีเพราะอวิชชาเป็นเหตุให้เกิด ความดับอาสวะ ย่อมมีเพราะอวิชชาดับ อริยมรรคประกอบ ด้วยองค์ ๘ นี้แหละ คือ ความเห็นชอบ ดำริชอบ เจรจาชอบ การงานชอบ เลี้ยงชีพชอบ พยายามชอบ ระลึกชอบ ตั้งใจชอบ ชื่อว่าปฏิปทาที่จะให้ถึงความดับอาสวะ. ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุ เมื่อใด อริยสาวกรู้ชัดซึ่งอาสวะ เหตุเกิดแห่งอาสวะ ความดับอาสวะ ปฏิปทาที่จะให้ถึงความ ดับอาสวะ อย่างนี้ๆ เมื่อนั้นท่านละราคานุสัย บรรเทาปฏิฆานุสัย ถอนทิฏฐานุสัย และมานานุสัย โดยประการทั้งปวง ละอวิชชา ยังวิชชาให้เกิด ย่อมกระทำซึ่งที่สุดแห่งทุกข์ในปัจจุบันเทียว แม้ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้ อริยสาวกชื่อว่าเป็นสัมมาทิฏฐิ มีความเห็นดำเนินไปตรงแล้ว ประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอันแน่วแน่ในธรรม มาสู่พระสัทธรรมนี้.
ท่านพระสารีบุตรได้กล่าวคำนี้แล้ว ภิกษุเหล่านั้น ชื่นชม ยินดีภาษิตของท่านพระสารีบุตรแล้วแล.

At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

There Sāriputta addressed the mendicants:

“āvuso bhikkhave”ti.
“Reverends, mendicants!”

“Reverend,” they replied.

But what is the unskillful and what is its root? And what is the skillful and what is its root?

Pāṇātipāto kho, āvuso, akusalaṁ, adinnādānaṁ akusalaṁ, kāmesumicchācāro akusalaṁ, musāvādo akusalaṁ, pisuṇā vācā akusalaṁ, pharusā vācā akusalaṁ, samphappalāpo akusalaṁ, abhijjhā akusalaṁ, byāpādo akusalaṁ, micchādiṭṭhi akusalaṁ—
Killing living creatures, stealing, and sexual misconduct; speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical; covetousness, ill will, and wrong view.

This is called the unskillful.

Katamañcāvuso, akusalamūlaṁ?
And what is the root of the unskillful?

Lobho akusalamūlaṁ, doso akusalamūlaṁ, moho akusalamūlaṁ—
Greed, hate, and delusion.

This is called the root of the unskillful.

And what is the skillful?

Pāṇātipātā veramaṇī kusalaṁ, adinnādānā veramaṇī kusalaṁ, kāmesumicchācārā veramaṇī kusalaṁ, musāvādā veramaṇī kusalaṁ, pisuṇāya vācāya veramaṇī kusalaṁ, pharusāya vācāya veramaṇī kusalaṁ, samphappalāpā veramaṇī kusalaṁ, anabhijjhā kusalaṁ, abyāpādo kusalaṁ, sammādiṭṭhi kusalaṁ—
Refraining from killing living creatures, stealing, and sexual misconduct; refraining from speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical; contentment, good will, and right view.

This is called the skillful.

Contentment, love, and understanding.

This is called the root of the skillful.

Yato kho, āvuso, ariyasāvako evaṁ akusalaṁ pajānāti, evaṁ akusalamūlaṁ pajānāti, evaṁ kusalaṁ pajānāti, evaṁ kusalamūlaṁ pajānāti, so sabbaso rāgānusayaṁ pahāya, paṭighānusayaṁ paṭivinodetvā, ‘asmī’ti diṭṭhimānānusayaṁ samūhanitvā, avijjaṁ pahāya vijjaṁ uppādetvā, diṭṭheva dhamme dukkhassantakaro hoti—
A noble disciple understands in this way the unskillful and its root, and the skillful and its root. They’ve completely given up the underlying tendency to greed, dispelled the underlying tendency to aversion, and eradicated the underlying tendency to the view and conceit ‘I am’. They’ve given up ignorance and given rise to knowledge, and make an end of suffering in this very life.

Saying “Good, reverend,” those mendicants approved and agreed with what Sāriputta said. Then they asked another question:

But what is fuel? What is its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation?

Cattārome, āvuso, āhārā bhūtānaṁ vā sattānaṁ ṭhitiyā, sambhavesīnaṁ vā anuggahāya.
These four fuels maintain sentient beings that have been born and help those about to be born.

Kabaḷīkāro āhāro oḷāriko vā sukhumo vā, phasso dutiyo, manosañcetanā tatiyā, viññāṇaṁ catutthaṁ.
Edible food, whether solid or subtle; contact is the second, mental intention the third, and consciousness the fourth.

Taṇhāsamudayā āhārasamudayo, taṇhānirodhā āhāranirodho, ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo āhāranirodhagāminī paṭipadā, seyyathidaṁ—
Fuel originates from craving. Fuel ceases when craving ceases. The practice that leads to the cessation of fuel is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

sammādiṭṭhi sammāsaṅkappo sammāvācā sammākammanto, sammāājīvo sammāvāyāmo sammāsati sammāsamādhi.
right view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

Jātipi dukkhā, jarāpi dukkhā, maraṇampi dukkhaṁ, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsāpi dukkhā, appiyehi sampayogopi dukkho, piyehi vippayogopi dukkho, yampicchaṁ na labhati tampi dukkhaṁ, saṅkhittena pañcupādānakkhandhā dukkhā—
Rebirth is suffering; old age is suffering; death is suffering; sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress are suffering; being coupled with the disliked is suffering; separation from the liked is suffering; not getting what you wish for is suffering. In brief, the five grasping aggregates are suffering.

craving for sensual pleasures, craving for continued existence, and craving for nonexistence.

This is called the origin of suffering.

And what is the cessation of suffering?

It’s the fading away and cessation of that very same craving with no residue left behind; giving it away, letting it go, releasing it, and not clinging to it.

This is called the cessation of suffering.

A noble disciple understands in this way suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. They’ve completely given up the underlying tendency to greed, dispelled the underlying tendency to aversion, and eradicated the underlying tendency to the view and conceit ‘I am’. They’ve given up ignorance and given rise to knowledge, and make an end of suffering in this very life.

When they’ve done this, they’re defined as a noble disciple who has right view, whose view is correct, who has experiential confidence in the teaching, and has come to the true teaching.”

A noble disciple understands in this way defilement, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. They’ve completely given up the underlying tendency to greed, dispelled the underlying tendency to aversion, and eradicated the underlying tendency to the view and conceit ‘I am’. They’ve given up ignorance and given rise to knowledge, and make an end of suffering in this very life.

ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, ariyasāvako sammādiṭṭhi hoti, ujugatāssa diṭṭhi, dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgato, āgato imaṁ saddhamman”ti.
When they’ve done this, they’re defined as a noble disciple who has right view, whose view is correct, who has experiential confidence in the teaching, and has come to the true teaching.”

Idamavocāyasmā sāriputto.
That is what Venerable Sāriputta said.
