Nagarasutta
The Buddha tells the story of how his awakening came about through investigation into dependent origination. He compares it to a man discovering and ancient city, lost and overgrown with weeds.

สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระเชตวัน อารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ณ ที่นั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายมาว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก่อนแต่กาลตรัสรู้เมื่อเรายังเป็นพระโพธิสัตว์ ยังมิได้ตรัสรู้ เราได้มีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า โลกนี้ถึงความลำบากหนอ ย่อมเกิด แก่ ตาย จุติและอุบัติ ก็เมื่อเป็นเช่นนั้น ไม่มีผู้ใดทราบชัดซึ่งธรรมเป็นที่สลัดออกจากกองทุกข์ คือ ชราและมรณะนี้ได้เลย เมื่อไรหนอ ธรรมเป็นที่สลัดออกไปจากกองทุกข์คือชราและมรณะนี้จึงจักปรากฏ ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราได้มีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า เมื่ออะไรหนอแลมีอยู่ ชราและมรณะจึงมี เพราะอะไรเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีชราและมรณะ เพราะการใส่ใจโดยแยบคายของเรานั้นจึงรู้ได้ด้วยปัญญาว่า เมื่อชาติแลมีอยู่ ชราและมรณะจึงมี เพราะชาติเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีชราและมรณะ เรานั้นได้มีความคิดดังนี้ว่า เมื่ออะไรหนอแลมีอยู่ ชาติจึงมี … ภพจึงมี … อุปาทานจึงมี … ตัณหาจึงมี …เวทนาจึงมี … ผัสสะจึงมี … สฬายตนะจึงมี … นามรูปจึงมี … เพราะอะไรเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีนามรูป เพราะการใส่ใจโดยแยบคายของเรานั้น จึงได้รู้ด้วยปัญญาว่า เมื่อวิญญาณมีอยู่ นามรูปจึงมี เพราะวิญญาณเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีนามรูป เรานั้นได้มีความคิดดังนี้ว่า เมื่ออะไรหนอแลมีอยู่ วิญญาณจึงมี เพราะอะไรเป็นปัจจัยจึงมีวิญญาณ เพราะการใส่ใจโดยแยบคายของเรานั้น จึงได้รู้ด้วยปัญญาว่า เมื่อนามรูปมีอยู่ วิญญาณจึงมี เพราะนามรูปเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีวิญญาณ เรานั้นได้มีความคิดดังนี้ว่า วิญญาณนี้แลได้กลับแล้วเพียงเท่านี้ ไม่ไปพ้นจากนามรูปได้เลยด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้ โลกย่อมเกิด แก่ ตาย จุติและอุบัติ กล่าวคือ เพราะนามรูปเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีวิญญาณ เพราะวิญญาณเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีนามรูป เพราะนามรูปเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีสฬายตนะ เพราะสฬายตนะเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีผัสสะ ฯลฯ ความเกิดขึ้นแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งมวลนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยประการอย่างนี้ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย จักษุ ญาณ ปัญญา วิชชา แสงสว่างได้เกิดขึ้นแล้วแก่เรา ในธรรมทั้งหลายที่เราไม่เคยได้ฟังมาในกาลก่อนว่า เหตุให้ทุกข์เกิด เหตุให้ทุกข์เกิด ดังนี้ ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราได้มีความคิดดังนี้ เมื่ออะไรหนอแลไม่มีอยู่ ชราและมรณะจึงไม่มี เพราะอะไรดับ ชราและมรณะจึงดับ เพราะการใส่ใจโดยแยบคายของเรานั้น จึงรู้ได้ด้วยปัญญาว่า เมื่อชาติไม่มี ชราและมรณะจึงไม่มี เพราะชาติดับ ชราและมรณะจึงดับ เรานั้นได้มีความคิดดังนี้ว่า เมื่ออะไรหนอแลไม่มีอยู่ ชาติจึงไม่มี … ภพจึงไม่มี … อุปาทานจึงไม่มี … ตัณหาจึงไม่มี … เวทนาจึงไม่มี … ผัสสะจึงไม่มี … สฬายตนะจึงไม่มี … นามรูปจึงไม่มี … เพราะอะไรดับ นามรูปจึงดับ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะการใส่ใจโดยแยบคายของเรานั้น จึงรู้ได้ด้วยปัญญาว่า เมื่อวิญญาณไม่มี นามรูปจึงไม่มี เพราะวิญญาณดับ นามรูปจึงดับ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรานั้นได้มีความคิดดังนี้ว่า เมื่ออะไรหนอแลไม่มีอยู่ วิญญาณจึงไม่มี เพราะอะไรดับ วิญญาณจึงดับ เพราะการใส่ใจโดยแยบคายของเรานั้น จึงรู้ได้ด้วยปัญญาว่า เมื่อนามรูปไม่มี วิญญาณจึงไม่มี เพราะนามรูปดับ วิญญาณจึงดับ เรานั้นได้มีความคิดดังนี้ว่า มรรคนี้เราได้บรรลุแล้วแล ด้วยปัญญาเครื่องตรัสรู้ คือ เพราะนามรูปดับ วิญญาณจึงดับ เพราะวิญญาณดับ นามรูปจึงดับ เพราะนามรูปดับ สฬายตนะจึงดับเพราะสฬายตนะดับ ผัสสะจึงดับ ฯลฯ ความดับแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งมวลนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย จักษุญาณ ปัญญา วิชชา แสงสว่างได้เกิดขึ้นแล้วแก่เราในธรรมทั้งหลายที่เรายังไม่เคยได้ฟังมาในกาลก่อนว่า เหตุให้ทุกข์ดับ เหตุให้ทุกข์ดับ ดังนี้ ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุรุษเมื่อเที่ยวไปในป่าทึบ ได้พบมรรคาเก่า หนทางเก่า ที่คนก่อนๆ เคยเดินไปมา เขาเดินตามทางนั้นไป เมื่อกำลังเดินตามทางนั้นไป เมื่อกำลังเดินตามทางนั้นอยู่ พบนครเก่า พบราชธานีโบราณซึ่งสมบูรณ์ด้วยสวน ป่าไม้ สระโบกขรณี มีเชิงเทิน ล้วนน่ารื่นรมย์ ที่คนก่อนๆ เคยอยู่อาศัยมา ครั้งนั้นแล บุรุษคนนั้นจึงกราบทูลแด่พระราชาหรือเรียนแก่ราชมหาอำมาตย์ว่า ขอเดชะ พระองค์จงทราบเถิด พระพุทธเจ้าข้า ข้าพระพุทธเจ้าเมื่อเที่ยวไปในป่า ได้พบมรรคาเก่าหนทางเก่าที่คนก่อนๆ เคยเดินไปมา ข้าพระพุทธเจ้าได้เดินตามทางนั้นไป เมื่อกำลังเดินตามทางนั้นอยู่ได้พบนครเก่า พบราชธานี โบราณ ซึ่งสมบูรณ์ด้วยสวนป่าไม้ สระโบกขรณี มีเชิงเทิน ล้วนน่ารื่นรมย์ ที่คนก่อนๆ เคยอยู่อาศัยมา ขอพระองค์จงทรงสร้างพระนครนั้นเถิด พระพุทธเจ้าข้า ลำดับนั้น พระราชาหรือราชมหาอำมาตย์จึงสร้างเมืองนั้นขึ้น สมัยต่อมา เมืองนั้นเป็นเมืองมั่งคั่งและสมบูรณ์ขึ้น มีประชาชนเป็นอันมาก มีมนุษย์เกลื่อนกล่น และเป็นเมืองถึงความเจริญไพบูลย์ แม้ฉันใด ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราได้พบมรรคาเก่า หนทางเก่า ที่พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าพระองค์ก่อนๆ เคยเสด็จไป ก็มรรคาเก่า หนทางเก่า ที่พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าองค์ก่อนๆ เคยเสด็จไปนั้น เป็นไฉน คือมรรคาอันประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘ อันประเสริฐ นี้แล ได้แก่สัมมาทิฐิ ฯลฯ สัมมาสมาธิ นี้แล มรรคาเก่า หนทางเก่า ที่พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าพระองค์ก่อนๆ เคยเสด็จไปแล้ว เราก็ได้เดินตามหนทางอันประเสริฐซึ่งประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘ ประการ อันเป็นทางเก่านั้น เมื่อกำลังเดินตามหนทางนั้นไปได้รู้ชัดซึ่งชราและมรณะ เหตุเกิดขึ้นแห่งชราและมรณะ ความดับแห่งชราและมรณะ และได้รู้ชัดซึ่งปฏิปทาเครื่องให้ถึงความดับชราและมรณะ เมื่อเรากำลังเดินตามทางอันประเสริฐซึ่งประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘ ประการ อันเป็นทางเก่านั้นไปอยู่ ได้รู้ชัดซึ่งชาติ ฯลฯ ได้รู้ชัดซึ่งภพ … ได้รู้ชัดซึ่งอุปาทาน … ได้รู้ชัดซึ่งตัณหา … ได้รู้ชัดซึ่งเวทนา … ได้รู้ชัดซึ่งผัสสะ … ได้รู้ชัดซึ่งสฬายตนะ … ได้รู้ชัดซึ่งนามรูป … ได้รู้ชัดซึ่งวิญญาณ … ได้รู้ชัดซึ่งสังขารทั้งหลาย เหตุเกิดขึ้นแห่งสังขาร ความดับแห่งสังขาร และได้รู้ชัดซึ่งปฏิปทาเครื่องให้ถึงความดับแห่งสังขาร ครั้นได้รู้ชัดซึ่งทางอันประเสริฐซึ่งประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘ ประการนั้นแล้ว เราจึงได้บอกแก่พวกภิกษุ ภิกษุณี อุบาสก อุบาสิกา ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย พรหมจรรย์ของเราจึงได้เจริญแพร่หลายกว้างขวาง มีชนเป็นอันมากรู้ เป็นปึกแผ่น จนกระทั่งเทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลายก็ประกาศได้เป็นอย่างดี ดังนี้แล ฯ

“Pubbe me, bhikkhave, sambodhā anabhisambuddhassa bodhisattasseva sato etadahosi:
“Mendicants, before my awakening—when I was still unawakened but intent on awakening—I thought:

‘kicchā vatāyaṁ loko āpanno jāyati ca jīyati ca mīyati ca cavati ca upapajjati ca.
‘Alas, this world has fallen into trouble. It’s born, grows old, dies, passes away, and is reborn,

Atha ca panimassa dukkhassa nissaraṇaṁ nappajānāti jarāmaraṇassa.
yet it doesn’t understand how to escape from this suffering, from old age and death.

Kudāssu nāma imassa dukkhassa nissaraṇaṁ paññāyissati jarāmaraṇassā’ti?
Oh, when will an escape be found from this suffering, from old age and death?’

‘When consciousness exists there are name and form. Consciousness is a requirement for name and form.’

Then, through rational application of mind, I penetrated with wisdom:

‘nāmarūpe kho sati viññāṇaṁ hoti, nāmarūpapaccayā viññāṇan’ti.
‘When name and form exist there’s consciousness. Name and form are requirements for consciousness.’

Then it occurred to me:

paccudāvattati kho idaṁ viññāṇaṁ nāmarūpamhā na paraṁ gacchati.
This consciousness turns back from name and form, and doesn’t go beyond that.

Ettāvatā jāyetha vā jīyetha vā mīyetha vā cavetha vā upapajjetha vā, yadidaṁ nāmarūpapaccayā viññāṇaṁ;
This is the extent to which one may be reborn, grow old, die, pass away, or reappear. That is: name and form are requirements for consciousness.

‘Origination, origination.’ Such was the vision, knowledge, wisdom, realization, and light that arose in me regarding teachings not learned before from another.

adhigato kho myāyaṁ maggo bodhāya yadidaṁ—
I have discovered the path to awakening. That is:

nāmarūpanirodhā viññāṇanirodho;
When name and form cease, consciousness ceases.

viññāṇanirodhā nāmarūpanirodho;
When consciousness ceases, name and form cease.
- 6.5
nāmarūpanirodhā saḷāyatananirodho;
When name and form cease, the six sense fields cease.

‘Nirodho, nirodho’ti kho me, bhikkhave, pubbe ananussutesu dhammesu cakkhuṁ udapādi ñāṇaṁ udapādi paññā udapādi vijjā udapādi āloko udapādi.
‘Cessation, cessation.’ Such was the vision, knowledge, wisdom, realization, and light that arose in me regarding teachings not learned before from another.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso araññe pavane caramāno passeyya purāṇaṁ maggaṁ purāṇañjasaṁ pubbakehi manussehi anuyātaṁ.
Suppose a person was walking through a forest. They’d see an ancient path, an ancient route traveled by humans in the past.

So tamanugaccheyya.

Tamanugacchanto passeyya purāṇaṁ nagaraṁ purāṇaṁ rājadhāniṁ pubbakehi manussehi ajjhāvuṭṭhaṁ ārāmasampannaṁ vanasampannaṁ pokkharaṇīsampannaṁ uddhāpavantaṁ ramaṇīyaṁ.
they’d see an ancient city, an ancient capital, inhabited by humans in the past. It was lovely, complete with parks, groves, lotus ponds, and embankments.

Atha kho so, bhikkhave, puriso rañño vā rājamahāmattassa vā āroceyya:
Then that person would inform a king or their chief minister:
- 7.5
‘yagghe, bhante, jāneyyāsi—ahaṁ addasaṁ araññe pavane caramāno purāṇaṁ maggaṁ purāṇañjasaṁ pubbakehi manussehi anuyātaṁ tamanugacchiṁ.
‘Please sir, you should know this. While walking through a forest I saw an ancient path, an ancient route traveled by humans in the past.

Tamanugacchanto addasaṁ purāṇaṁ nagaraṁ purāṇaṁ rājadhāniṁ pubbakehi manussehi ajjhāvuṭṭhaṁ ārāmasampannaṁ vanasampannaṁ pokkharaṇīsampannaṁ uddhāpavantaṁ ramaṇīyaṁ.
Following it along I saw an ancient city, an ancient capital, inhabited by humans in the past. It was lovely, complete with parks, groves, lotus ponds, and embankments.

Taṁ, bhante, nagaraṁ māpehī’ti.
Sir, you should rebuild that city!’

Atha kho so, bhikkhave, rājā vā rājamahāmatto vā taṁ nagaraṁ māpeyya.
Then that king or their chief minister would have that city rebuilt.

Tadassa nagaraṁ aparena samayena iddhañceva phītañca bāhujaññaṁ ākiṇṇamanussaṁ vuddhivepullappattaṁ.
And after some time that city was successful and prosperous, populous and full of people, attained to growth and expansion.

Evameva khvāhaṁ, bhikkhave, addasaṁ purāṇaṁ maggaṁ purāṇañjasaṁ pubbakehi sammāsambuddhehi anuyātaṁ.
In the same way, I saw an ancient path, an ancient route traveled by fully awakened Buddhas in the past.

Katamo ca so, bhikkhave, purāṇamaggo purāṇañjaso pubbakehi sammāsambuddhehi anuyāto?
And what is that ancient path, the ancient route traveled by fully awakened Buddhas in the past?
- 8.2
Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṁ—
It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi.
right view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

Ayaṁ kho so, bhikkhave, purāṇamaggo purāṇañjaso pubbakehi sammāsambuddhehi anuyāto, tamanugacchiṁ;
This is that ancient path, the ancient route traveled by fully awakened Buddhas in the past.
- 8.5
tamanugacchanto jarāmaraṇaṁ abbhaññāsiṁ;
Following it along, I directly knew old age and death,
- 8.6
jarāmaraṇasamudayaṁ abbhaññāsiṁ;
their origin,
- 8.7
jarāmaraṇanirodhaṁ abbhaññāsiṁ;
their cessation,
- 8.8
jarāmaraṇanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ abbhaññāsiṁ.
and the practice that leads to their cessation.

Having directly known this, I told the monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen.

Tayidaṁ, bhikkhave, brahmacariyaṁ iddhañceva phītañca vitthārikaṁ bāhujaññaṁ puthubhūtaṁ yāva devamanussehi suppakāsitan”ti.
And that’s how this spiritual life has become successful and prosperous, extensive, popular, widespread, and fully revealed among gods and humans.”
