The tears you have shed in transmigration are greater than the waters in the oceans.
ฉบับหลวงอัสสุสูตร
ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระเชตวัน อารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ณ ที่นั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลาย … แล้วได้ตรัสว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย สงสารนี้กำหนดที่สุดเบื้องต้นเบื้องปลายไม่ได้ ฯลฯ พวกเธอจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นเป็นไฉน น้ำตาที่หลั่งไหลของพวกเธอผู้ท่องเที่ยวไปมา คร่ำครวญร้องไห้อยู่ เพราะประสบสิ่งที่ไม่พอใจ เพราะพลัดพรากจากสิ่งที่พอใจโดยกาลนานนี้ กับน้ำในมหาสมุทรทั้ง ๔ สิ่งไหนจะมากกว่ากัน ฯ
ภิกษุเหล่านั้นทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ พวกข้าพระองค์ย่อมทราบธรรมตามที่พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงแสดงแล้วว่า น้ำตาที่หลั่งไหลออกของพวกข้าพระองค์ผู้ท่องเที่ยวไปมา คร่ำครวญ ร้องไห้อยู่ เพราะการประสบสิ่งที่ไม่พอใจ เพราะการพลัดพรากจากสิ่งที่พอใจโดยกาลนาน นี้แหละมากกว่า ส่วนน้ำในมหาสมุทรทั้ง ๔ ไม่มากกว่าเลย ฯ
พ. ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถูกละๆ พวกเธอทราบธรรมที่เราแสดงแล้วอย่างนี้ ถูกแล้ว น้ำตาที่หลั่งไหลออกของพวกเธอ ผู้ท่องเที่ยวไปมา ฯลฯโดยกาลนาน นี้แหละมากกว่า ส่วนน้ำในมหาสมุทรทั้ง ๔ ไม่มากกว่าเลย พวกเธอได้ประสบมรณกรรมของมารดาตลอดกาลนาน น้ำตาที่หลั่งไหลออกของเธอเหล่านั้น ผู้ประสบมรณกรรมของมารดา คร่ำครวญร้องไห้อยู่ เพราะประสบสิ่งที่ไม่พอใจ เพราะพลัดพรากจากสิ่งที่พอใจ นั่นแหละมากกว่า ส่วนน้ำในมหาสมุทรทั้ง ๔ ไม่มากกว่าเลย พวกเธอได้ประสบมรณกรรมของบิดา … ของพี่ชายน้องชาย พี่สาวน้องสาว … ของบุตร … ของธิดา … ความเสื่อมแห่งญาติ …ความเสื่อมแห่งโภคะ … ได้ประสบความเสื่อมเพราะโรคตลอดกาลนาน น้ำตาที่หลั่งไหลออกของเธอเหล่านั้น ผู้ประสบความเสื่อมเพราะโรค คร่ำครวญร้องไห้อยู่ เพราะประสบสิ่งที่ไม่พอใจ เพราะพลัดพรากจากสิ่งที่พอใจ นั่นแหละมากกว่า ส่วนน้ำในมหาสมุทรทั้ง ๔ ไม่มากกว่าเลย ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุไร เพราะว่าสงสารนี้กำหนดที่สุดเบื้องต้นเบื้องปลายไม่ได้ ฯลฯ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็เหตุเพียงเท่านี้ พอทีเดียวเพื่อจะเบื่อหน่ายในสังขารทั้งปวง พอเพื่อจะคลายกำหนัด พอเพื่อจะหลุดพ้น ดังนี้ ฯ

“Anamataggoyaṁ, bhikkhave, saṁsāro.
“Mendicants, this transmigration has no known beginning.

Pubbā koṭi na paññāyati avijjānīvaraṇānaṁ sattānaṁ taṇhāsaṁyojanānaṁ sandhāvataṁ saṁsarataṁ.
No first point is found of sentient beings roaming and transmigrating, shrouded by ignorance and fettered by craving.

Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, katamaṁ nu kho bahutaraṁ, yaṁ vā vo iminā dīghena addhunā sandhāvataṁ saṁsarataṁ amanāpasampayogā manāpavippayogā kandantānaṁ rodantānaṁ assu passannaṁ paggharitaṁ, yaṁ vā catūsu mahāsamuddesu udakan”ti?
What do you think? Which is more: the flow of tears you’ve shed while roaming and transmigrating for such a very long time—weeping and wailing from being coupled with the unloved and separated from the loved—or the water in the four oceans?”

“Yathā kho mayaṁ, bhante, bhagavatā dhammaṁ desitaṁ ājānāma, etadeva, bhante, bahutaraṁ yaṁ no iminā dīghena addhunā sandhāvataṁ saṁsarataṁ amanāpasampayogā manāpavippayogā kandantānaṁ rodantānaṁ assu passannaṁ paggharitaṁ, na tveva catūsu mahāsamuddesu udakan”ti.
“As we understand the Buddha’s teaching, the flow of tears we’ve shed while roaming and transmigrating is more than the water in the four oceans.”

“Good, good, mendicants! It’s good that you understand my teaching like this.

The flow of tears you’ve shed while roaming and transmigrating is indeed more than the water in the four oceans.

or loss through illness. From being coupled with the unloved and separated from the loved, the flow of tears you’ve shed while roaming and transmigrating is indeed more than the water in the four oceans.

This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.”
