ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระเชตวัน อารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ณ ที่นั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลาย … แล้วได้ตรัสว่า ดูกร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นเป็นไฉน ภิกษุชนิดไร สมควรเข้าไปสู่สกุล ภิกษุ ชนิดไร ไม่สมควรเข้าไปสู่สกุล ฯ ภิกษุทั้งหลายกราบทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ธรรมทั้งหลายของพวกข้าพระองค์ มีพระ ผู้มีพระภาคเป็นรากฐาน ฯลฯ ฯ
พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสดังนี้ว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ภิกษุรูปใดรูปหนึ่งมีความคิด อย่างนี้ว่า ขอชนทั้งหลายจงให้แก่เราเท่านั้น อย่าไม่ให้ จงให้แก่เราให้มาก อย่าให้น้อย จงให้ เราแต่สิ่งประณีตเท่านั้น อย่าให้สิ่งเศร้าหมองจงให้เราเร็วพลันทีเดียว อย่าให้ช้า จงให้เราโดย ความเคารพเท่านั้น อย่าให้โดยไม่เคารพเข้าไปสู่สกุล ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุนั้นมีความคิด อย่างนี้เข้าไปสู่สกุลชนทั้งหลายไม่ให้ ภิกษุย่อมอึดอัดเพราะข้อนั้น เธอย่อมได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัส ซึ่งมีข้อนั้นเป็นเหตุ ชนทั้งหลายให้น้อย ไม่ให้มาก ฯลฯ ให้ของเศร้าหมอง ไม่ให้ของประณีต ให้ช้า ไม่ให้เร็ว ภิกษุย่อมอึดอัดเพราะข้อนั้น เธอย่อมได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสซึ่งมีข้อนั้นเป็นเหตุ ชนทั้งหลายให้โดยไม่เคารพ ไม่ให้โดยเคารพ ภิกษุย่อมอึดอัดเพราะข้อนั้น เธอย่อมได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสซึ่งมีข้อนั้นเป็นเหตุ ภิกษุเห็นปานนี้แล ไม่ควรเป็นผู้เข้าไปสู่สกุล ฯ
ส่วนภิกษุใดแล มีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า ขอให้ชนทั้งหลายในสกุลอื่นจงให้เราเท่านั้น อย่าไม่ให้ จงให้เรามากเท่านั้น อย่าให้น้อย จงให้เราแต่สิ่งประณีตเท่านั้น อย่าให้สิ่งเศร้าหมอง จงให้เราพลันทีเดียว อย่าให้ช้า จงให้เราโดยเคารพเท่านั้น อย่าให้โดยไม่เคารพนั้น อันนั้นจะพึงได้ในเรื่องนี้แต่ที่ไหนดังนี้ เข้าไปสู่สกุล ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุนั้นมีความคิดอย่างนี้ เข้าไปสู่สกุลชนทั้งหลายไม่ให้ ภิกษุย่อมไม่อึดอัดเพราะข้อนั้น เธอย่อมไม่ได้เสวยทุกข โทมนัสซึ่งมีข้อนั้นเป็นเหตุ ชนทั้งหลายให้น้อย ไม่ให้มาก ภิกษุย่อมไม่อึดอัดเพราะข้อนั้น เธอย่อมไม่ได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสซึ่งมีข้อนั้นเป็นเหตุ ชนทั้งหลายให้สิ่งเศร้าหมอง ไม่ให้สิ่งประณีต … ให้ช้า ไม่ให้เร็ว ภิกษุย่อมไม่อึดอัดเพราะข้อนั้น เธอย่อมไม่ได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสซึ่งมีข้อนั้นเป็นเหตุ ชนทั้งหลายให้โดยไม่เคารพ ไม่ให้โดยเคารพ ภิกษุย่อมไม่อึดอัดเพราะข้อนั้น เธอย่อมไม่ได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสซึ่งมีข้อนั้นเป็นเหตุ ภิกษุเห็นปานนี้แล ควรเป็นผู้เข้าไปสู่สกุล ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย กัสสปมีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า ชนทั้งหลายจงให้แก่เราเท่านั้น อย่าไม่ให้ จงให้แก่เรามากทีเดียว อย่าให้น้อย ฯลฯ อันนั้นจะพึงได้ในเรื่องนี้แต่ที่ไหนดังนี้ เข้าไปสู่สกุล ชนทั้งหลายไม่ให้ กัสสปไม่อึดอัดเพราะข้อนั้น เธอไม่ได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสซึ่งมีข้อนั้นเป็นเหตุ ชนทั้งหลายให้น้อยไม่ให้มาก กัสสปไม่อึดอัดเพราะข้อนั้น เธอไม่ได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัส ซึ่งมีข้อนั้นเป็นเหตุ ชนทั้งหลายให้สิ่งเศร้าหมอง ไม่ให้สิ่งประณีต กัสสปไม่อึดอัดเพราะข้อนั้น เธอไม่ได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสซึ่งมีข้อนั้นเป็นเหตุ ชนทั้งหลายให้ช้า ไม่ให้โดยเร็ว กัสสปไม่อึดอัดเพราะข้อนั้น เธอไม่ได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสซึ่งมีข้อนั้นเป็นเหตุ ชนทั้งหลายให้โดยไม่เคารพ ไม่ให้โดยเคารพ กัสสปไม่อึดอัดเพราะข้อนั้น เธอไม่ได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสซึ่งมีข้อนั้นเป็นเหตุ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราจักกล่าวสอนพวกเธอให้ตามกัสสป หรือผู้ใดจะพึงเป็นเช่นกัสสป เราจักกล่าวสอนให้ประพฤติตามผู้นั้น พวกเธอเมื่อได้รับโอวาทแล้ว พึงปฏิบัติเพื่อความเป็นอย่างนั้น ดังนี้ ฯ

At Sāvatthī.

“Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave,
“What do you think, mendicants?

kathaṁrūpo bhikkhu arahati kulūpako hotuṁ, kathaṁrūpo bhikkhu na arahati kulūpako hotun”ti?
What kind of mendicant is worthy of visiting families? And what kind of mendicant is not worthy of visiting families?”

“Our teachings are rooted in the Buddha. …”

The Buddha said this:

“Yo hi koci, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaṁcitto kulāni upasaṅkamati:
“Whoever visits families with the thought:
- 2.2
‘dentuyeva me, mā nādaṁsu;
‘May they give to me, may they not fail to give.
- 2.3
bahukaññeva me dentu, mā thokaṁ;
May they give a lot, not a little.
- 2.4
paṇītaññeva me dentu, mā lūkhaṁ;
May they give me fine things, not coarse.
- 2.5
sīghaññeva me dentu, mā dandhaṁ;
May they give quickly, not slowly.
- 2.6
sakkaccaññeva me dentu, mā asakkaccan’ti.
May they give carefully, not carelessly.’

Tassa ce, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno evaṁcittassa kulāni upasaṅkamato na denti, tena bhikkhu sandīyati; so tatonidānaṁ dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedayati.
If a mendicant with such a thought approaches a family and they don’t give, the mendicant feels slighted. And they experience pain and sadness because of that.

Asakkaccaṁ denti, no sakkaccaṁ; tena bhikkhu sandīyati; so tatonidānaṁ dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedayati.
if they give carelessly, the mendicant feels slighted. And they experience pain and sadness because of that.

Evarūpo kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na arahati kulūpako hotuṁ.
That kind of mendicant is not worthy of visiting families.

‘When among other families, how could I possibly think:

I will exhort you with the example of Kassapa or someone like him. You should practice accordingly.”
