Dhanuggahasutta

Only a speedster could catch arrows in flight, yet conditioned phenomena perish faster than that.

พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระเชตวัน อารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี … พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย นายขมังธนู ๔ คน ถือธนูอันมั่นคงได้ศึกษามาดีแล้ว เป็นผู้มีความชำนาญ เป็นผู้มีศิลปอันได้แสดงแล้ว ยืนอยู่แล้วในทิศทั้ง ๔ ถ้าบุรุษพึงมากล่าวว่า เราจักจับลูกธนูทั้งหลายที่นายขมังธนูทั้ง ๔ เหล่านี้ยิงมาจากทิศทั้ง ๔ ไม่ให้ตกถึงแผ่นดิน เธอทั้งหลายจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นเป็นไฉน ควรจะกล่าวได้ว่าบุรุษผู้มีความเร็ว ประกอบด้วยความเร็วอย่างยอดเยี่ยม ดังนี้หรือ ฯ ภิกษุทั้งหลายกราบทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ถ้าแม้บุรุษจะพึงจับลูกธนูที่นายขมังธนูเพียงคนเดียวยิงไม่ให้ตกถึงแผ่นดิน ก็ควรจะกล่าวได้ว่า บุรุษผู้มีความเร็วประกอบด้วยความเร็วอย่างยอดเยี่ยม จะกล่าวไปไยถึงการจับลูกธนูทั้ง ๔ ลูกที่นายขมังธนู ๔ คนยิงมาจาก ๔ ทิศ แม้ฉันใด ฯ

พ. ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เหมือนอย่างว่า ความเร็วของพระจันทร์และพระอาทิตย์ เร็วกว่าความเร็วของบุรุษนั้น ความเร็วของเทวดาที่ไปข้างหน้าพระจันทร์พระอาทิตย์ เร็วกว่าความเร็วของบุรุษ และความเร็วของพระจันทร์ และพระอาทิตย์ อายุสังขารสิ้นไปเร็วกว่าความเร็วนั้นๆ เพราะเหตุดังนี้นั้น เธอทั้งหลายพึงศึกษาอย่างนี้ว่า เราทั้งหลายจักเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาทอยู่ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เธอทั้งหลายพึงศึกษาอย่างนี้แหละ ฯ

    Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

    At Sāvatthī.

    “Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, cattāro daḷhadhammā dhanuggahā susikkhitā katahatthā katūpāsanā catuddisā ṭhitā assu.

    “Mendicants, suppose there were four well-trained expert archers with strong bows standing in the four quarters.

    Atha puriso āgaccheyya:

    And a man came along and thought,

    ‘ahaṁ imesaṁ catunnaṁ daḷhadhammānaṁ dhanuggahānaṁ susikkhitānaṁ katahatthānaṁ katūpāsanānaṁ catuddisā kaṇḍe khitte appatiṭṭhite pathaviyaṁ gahetvā āharissāmī’ti.

    ‘When these four well-trained expert archers shoot arrows in four quarters, I’ll catch them before they reach the ground, and then I’ll bring them back.’

    Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave,

    What do you think, mendicants?

    ‘javano puriso paramena javena samannāgato’ti alaṁvacanāyā”ti?

    Are they qualified to be called ‘a speedster endowed with super-speed’?”

    “Ekassa cepi, bhante, daḷhadhammassa dhanuggahassa susikkhitassa katahatthassa katūpāsanassa kaṇḍaṁ khittaṁ appatiṭṭhitaṁ pathaviyaṁ gahetvā āhareyya:

    “If he could catch an arrow shot by just one well-trained expert archer before it reaches the ground and bring it back,

    ‘javano puriso paramena javena samannāgato’ti alaṁvacanāya, ko pana vādo catunnaṁ daḷhadhammānaṁ dhanuggahānaṁ susikkhitānaṁ katahatthānaṁ katūpāsanānan”ti?

    he’d be qualified to be called ‘a speedster endowed with super-speed’. How much more so arrows shot by four archers!”

    “Yathā ca, bhikkhave, tassa purisassa javo, yathā ca candimasūriyānaṁ javo, tato sīghataro.

    “As fast as that man is, the sun and moon are faster.

    Yathā ca, bhikkhave, tassa purisassa javo yathā ca candimasūriyānaṁ javo yathā ca yā devatā candimasūriyānaṁ purato dhāvanti tāsaṁ devatānaṁ javo, (…) tato sīghataraṁ āyusaṅkhārā khīyanti.

    As fast as that man is, as fast as the sun and moon are, and as fast as the deities that run before the sun and moon are, the waning of the life forces is faster.

    Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ:

    So you should train like this:

    ‘appamattā viharissāmā’ti.

    ‘We will stay diligent.’

    Evañhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabban”ti.

    That’s how you should train.”
