Dutiyaaññatarabhikkhusutta
The Buddha teaches a mendicant who wants to go on retreat that one is measured by what one has an underlying tendency for. The mendicant gives a full explanation.

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
พระนครสาวัตถี ฯลฯ ครั้งนั้นแล ภิกษุรูปหนึ่ง เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ฯลฯ ครั้นแล้วได้กราบทูลพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ขอประทานวโรกาส พระเจ้าข้า ขอพระผู้มีพระภาคทรงแสดงธรรมแก่ข้าพระองค์โดยย่อ ที่ข้าพระองค์ฟังแล้วพึงเป็นผู้ๆ เดียว หลีกออกจากหมู่ ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีใจมั่นคงอยู่เถิด.
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ดูกรภิกษุ บุคคลครุ่นคิดถึงสิ่งใด ย่อมหมกมุ่นสิ่งนั้น หมกมุ่นสิ่งใด ย่อมถึงการนับเพราะสิ่งนั้น ไม่ครุ่นคิดถึงสิ่งใด ย่อมไม่หมกมุ่นสิ่งนั้น ไม่หมกมุ่นสิ่งใด ย่อมไม่ถึงการนับเพราะสิ่งนั้น.
ภิ. ข้าแต่พระผู้มีพระภาค ข้าพระองค์เข้าใจแล้ว ข้าแต่พระสุคต ข้าพระองค์เข้าใจแล้ว.
พ. ดูกรภิกษุ ก็เธอเข้าใจเนื้อความแห่งคำที่เรากล่าวโดยย่อได้โดยพิสดารอย่างไร?
ภิ. ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ถ้าบุคคลครุ่นคิดถึงรูป ย่อมหมกมุ่นรูปใด ย่อมถึงการนับเพราะรูปนั้น ถ้าครุ่นคิดถึงเวทนา ฯลฯ ถ้าครุ่นคิดถึงสัญญา ฯลฯ ถ้าครุ่นคิดถึงสังขาร ฯลฯ ถ้าครุ่นคิดถึงวิญญาณ ย่อมหมกมุ่นวิญญาณนั้น หมกมุ่นวิญญาณใด ย่อมถึงการนับเพราะวิญญาณนั้น. ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ถ้าบุคคลไม่ครุ่นคิดถึงรูป ย่อมไม่หมกมุ่นรูปนั้น ไม่หมกมุ่นรูปใด. ย่อมไม่ถึงการนับเพราะรูปนั้น. ถ้าไม่ครุ่นคิดถึงเวทนา ฯลฯ ถ้าไม่ครุ่นคิดถึงสัญญา ฯลฯ ถ้าไม่ครุ่นคิดถึงสังขาร ฯลฯ ถ้าไม่ครุ่นคิดถึงวิญญาณ ย่อมไม่หมกมุ่นวิญญาณนั้น ไม่หมกมุ่นวิญญาณใด ย่อมไม่ถึงการนับเพราะวิญญาณนั้น. ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ข้าพระองค์เข้าใจเนื้อความแห่งพระภาษิตที่พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสแล้วโดยย่อได้โดยพิสดารอย่างนี้แล.
พ. ถูกแล้ว ถูกแล้ว ภิกษุ เธอเข้าใจเนื้อความแห่งคำที่เรากล่าวโดยย่อได้โดยพิสดารดีนักแล. ดูกรภิกษุ ถ้าบุคคลครุ่นคิดถึงรูป ย่อมหมกมุ่นรูปนั้น หมกมุ่นรูปใด ย่อมถึงการนับเพราะรูปนั้น. ถ้าครุ่นคิดถึงเวทนา ฯลฯ ถ้าครุ่นคิดถึงสัญญา ฯลฯ ถ้าครุ่นคิดถึงสังขาร ฯลฯ ถ้าครุ่นคิดถึงวิญญาณ ย่อมหมกมุ่นวิญญาณนั้น หมกมุ่นวิญญาณใด ย่อมถึงการนับเพราะวิญญาณนั้น. ดูกรภิกษุ ถ้าบุคคลไม่ครุ่นคิดถึงรูป ย่อมไม่หมกมุ่นรูปนั้น ไม่หมกมุ่นรูปใด ย่อมไม่ถึงการนับเพราะรูปนั้น. ถ้าไม่ครุ่นคิดถึงเวทนา ฯลฯ ถ้าไม่ครุ่นคิดถึงสัญญา ฯลฯ ถ้าไม่ครุ่นคิดถึงสังขาร ฯลฯ ถ้าไม่ครุ่นคิดถึงวิญญาณ ย่อมไม่หมกมุ่นวิญญาณนั้น ไม่หมกมุ่นวิญญาณใด ย่อมไม่ถึงการนับเพราะวิญญาณนั้น. ดูกรภิกษุ เธอพึงเข้าใจเนื้อความแห่งคำนี้ที่เรา กล่าวแล้วโดยย่อโดยพิสดารอย่างนี้ ฯลฯ ก็ภิกษุรูปนั้นได้เป็นพระอรหันต์องค์หนึ่งในจำนวนพระอรหันต์ทั้งหลาย.

Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha … and asked him,

“sādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saṅkhittena dhammaṁ desetu yamahaṁ bhagavato dhammaṁ sutvā eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto vihareyyan”ti.
“Sir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.”

“Yaṁ kho, bhikkhu, anuseti taṁ anumīyati;
“Mendicant, you’re measured against what you have an underlying tendency for,
