Nirodhasamāpattisutta

Sāriputta goes to Mirkwood for meditation, and afterwards Ānanda asks why his face is so radiant. Sāriputta replies that he was practicing the attainment of cessation without any thought of self.

สมัยหนึ่ง ท่านพระสารีบุตรอยู่ ณ พระวิหารเชตวันอารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี ใกล้พระนครสาวัตถี. ครั้งนั้นเป็นเวลาเช้า ท่านพระสารีบุตรนุ่งแล้ว ถือบาตรและจีวรเข้าไปบิณฑบาตยังพระนครสาวัตถี ครั้นเที่ยวบิณฑบาตในพระนครสาวัตถีแล้ว กลับจากบิณฑบาต ภายหลังภัตเข้าไปยังป่าอันธวันเพื่อพักกลางวัน ถึงป่าอันธวันแล้ว นั่งพักกลางวันอยู่ที่โคนไม้แห่งหนึ่ง. ครั้งนั้นเป็นเวลาเย็นท่านพระสารีบุตรออกจากที่พักผ่อนแล้ว เข้าไปยังพระวิหารเชตวันอารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี. ท่านพระอานนท์ได้เห็นท่านพระสารีบุตรมาแต่ไกลจึงกล่าวกะท่านพระสารีบุตรว่า อาวุโสสารีบุตร อินทรีย์ของท่านผ่องใสนัก สีหน้าของท่านหมดจด ผ่องใส วันนี้ท่านพระสารีบุตรอยู่ด้วยวิหารธรรมอะไร?

ท่านพระสารีบุตรตอบว่า อาวุโส ดังเราจะบอก เราเข้าสัญญาเวทยิตนิโรธ เพราะล่วงเนวสัญญานาสัญญายตนฌานเสียได้โดยประการทั้งปวงอยู่. อาวุโส เรามิได้คิดอย่างนี้ว่า เราเข้าสัญญาเวทยิตนิโรธอยู่ หรือว่าเข้าสัญญาเวทยิตนิโรธแล้ว หรือว่าออกจากสัญญาเวทยิตนิโรธแล้ว. แท้จริง ท่านพระสารีบุตร ถอนอหังการ มมังการ และมานานุสัยออกได้นานแล้ว ฉะนั้น ท่านพระสารีบุตรจึงมิได้คิดอย่างนี้ว่า เราเข้าสัญญาเวทยิตนิโรธอยู่ หรือว่าเข้าสัญญาเวทยิตนิโรธแล้ว หรือว่าออกจากสัญญาเวทยิตนิโรธแล้ว.

    “Reverend, going totally beyond the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, I entered and remained in the cessation of perception and feeling.

    ‘I am entering the cessation of perception and feeling’ or ‘I have entered the cessation of perception and feeling’ or ‘I am emerging from the cessation of perception and feeling’.”
