Paṭilābhasutta

The Buddha explains the five faculties in terms of how they are obtained.

ฉบับหลวงปฏิลาภสูตร · ว่าด้วยอินทรีย์ ๕

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อินทรีย์ ๕ ประการนี้ ๕ ประการเป็นไฉน? คือ สัทธินทรีย์ ฯลฯ ปัญญินทรีย์.

ข้อ ๘๗๑ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็สัทธินทรีย์เป็นไฉน? อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีศรัทธา เชื่อพระปัญญาตรัสรู้ของพระตถาคตว่า แม้เพราะเหตุนี้ๆ พระผู้มีพระภาคพระองค์นั้นเป็นพระอรหันต์ … เป็นผู้ตื่นแล้ว เป็นผู้จำแนกธรรม นี้เรียกว่า สัทธินทรีย์.

ข้อ ๘๗๒ก็วิริยินทรีย์เป็นไฉน? อริยสาวกปรารภสัมมัปปธาน ๔ ย่อมได้ความเพียร นี้เรียกว่า วิริยินทรีย์.

ข้อ ๘๗๓ก็สตินทรีย์เป็นไฉน? อริยสาวกปรารภสติปัฏฐาน ๔ ย่อมได้สติ นี้เรียกว่า สตินทรีย์.

ข้อ ๘๗๔ก็สมาธินทรีย์เป็นไฉน? อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ ยึดหน่วงนิพพานให้เป็นอารมณ์แล้ว ได้สมาธิ ได้เอกัคคตาจิต นี้เรียกว่า สมาธินทรีย์.

ข้อ ๘๗๕ก็ปัญญินทรีย์เป็นไฉน? อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีปัญญา ประกอบด้วยปัญญาเครื่องกำหนดความเกิดและความดับอันประเสริฐ ชำแรกกิเลสให้ถึงความสิ้นทุกข์ โดยชอบ นี้เรียกว่า ปัญญินทรีย์ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อินทรีย์ ๕ ประการนี้แล.

    The faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

    And what is the faculty of faith?

    Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiṁ:

    It’s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized One’s awakening:

    ‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti—

    ‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those fit for training, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’

    idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaṁ.

    This is called the faculty of faith.

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, vīriyindriyaṁ?

    And what is the faculty of energy?

  12. 2.2

    Yaṁ kho, bhikkhave, cattāro sammappadhāne ārabbha vīriyaṁ paṭilabhati—

    The energy that’s gained owing to the four right efforts.

    idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vīriyindriyaṁ.

    This is called the faculty of energy.

  14. 3.1

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, satindriyaṁ?

    And what is the faculty of mindfulness?

  15. 3.2

    Yaṁ kho, bhikkhave, cattāro satipaṭṭhāne ārabbha satiṁ paṭilabhati—

    The mindfulness that’s gained owing to the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

  16. 3.3

    idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, satindriyaṁ.

    This is called the faculty of mindfulness.

  17. 4.1

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, samādhindriyaṁ?

    And what is the faculty of immersion?

  18. 4.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako vossaggārammaṇaṁ karitvā labhati samādhiṁ, labhati cittassa ekaggataṁ—

    It’s when a noble disciple, relying on letting go, gains immersion, gains unification of mind.

    idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, samādhindriyaṁ.

    This is called the faculty of immersion.

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, paññindriyaṁ?

    And what is the faculty of wisdom?

  21. 5.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako paññavā hoti udayatthagāminiyā paññāya samannāgato ariyāya nibbedhikāya sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyā—

    It’s when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering.

    idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, paññindriyaṁ.

    This is called the faculty of wisdom.

  23. 5.4

    Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañcindriyānī”ti.

    These are the five faculties.”
