Dutiyamahānāmasutta
Mahānāma the Sakyan expresses his fear that if he dies unmindful he may go to a bad rebirth. The Buddha tells him not to fear, as he will definitely go to a good place, since he has the four factors of stream-entry.

ข้อ ๑๕๑๐ข้าพเจ้าได้สดับมาแล้วอย่างนี้
สมัยหนึ่งพระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ นิโครธาราม ใกล้พระนครกบิลพัสดุ์ แคว้นสักกะ ครั้งนั้นพระเจ้ามหานามศากยราชเสด็จเข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ทรงถวายบังคมพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้ว ประทับนั่ง ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่ง ครั้นแล้วได้ทรงกราบทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ พระนครกบิลพัสดุ์นี้เป็นพระนครมั่งคั่ง เจริญรุ่งเรือง มีผู้คนมาก แออัดไปด้วยมนุษย์ มีถนนคับแคบ หม่อมฉันนั่งใกล้พระผู้มีพระภาค หรือนั่งใกล้ภิกษุทั้งหลายผู้เป็นที่เจริญใจแล้ว เมื่อเข้าไปยังพระนครกบิลพัสดุ์ในเวลาเย็น ย่อมไม่ไปพร้อมกับช้าง ม้า รถ เกวียน และแม้กับบุรุษ สมัยนั้นหม่อมฉันลืมสติที่ปรารภถึงพระผู้มีพระภาค พระธรรม พระสงฆ์ หม่อมฉันมีความดำริว่า ถ้าในเวลานี้เรากระทำกาละลงไป คติของเราจะเป็นอย่างไร?
ข้อ ๑๕๑๑พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ขอถวายพระพรมหาบพิตร อย่ากลัวเลยๆ การสวรรคตอันไม่เลวทรามจักมีแก่มหาบพิตร กาลกิริยาอันไม่เลวทรามจักมีแก่มหาบพิตร ดูกรมหาบพิตร อริยสาวกผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๔ ประการ ย่อมเป็นผู้น้อมไปสู่นิพพาน โน้มไปสู่นิพพาน โอนไปสู่นิพพาน ธรรม ๔ ประการเป็นไฉน? อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ ประกอบด้วย ความเลื่อมใสอันไม่หวั่นไหวในพระพุทธเจ้า … ในพระธรรมเจ้า … ในพระสงฆ์ … ประกอบด้วย ศีลที่พระอริยเจ้าใคร่แล้ว ไม่ขาด … เป็นไปเพื่อสมาธิ.
ข้อ ๑๕๑๒ดูกรมหาบพิตร เปรียบเหมือนต้นไม้ที่น้อมโน้มโอนไปทางทิศปราจีน เมื่อรากขาดแล้ว จะพึงล้มไปทางไหน?
ม. ก็พึงล้มไปทางที่ต้นไม้น้อมโน้มโอนไป พระเจ้าข้า.

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard.
- 1.2
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṁ nigrodhārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery.

Atha kho mahānāmo sakko yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho mahānāmo sakko bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Mahānāma the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

“idaṁ, bhante, kapilavatthu iddhañceva phītañca bāhujaññaṁ ākiṇṇamanussaṁ sambādhabyūhaṁ.
“Sir, this Kapilavatthu is successful and prosperous, populous and full of people, with cramped cul-de-sacs.

So khvāhaṁ, bhante, bhagavantaṁ vā payirupāsitvā manobhāvanīye vā bhikkhū sāyanhasamayaṁ kapilavatthuṁ pavisanto;
In the late afternoon, after paying homage to the Buddha or an esteemed mendicant, I enter Kapilavatthu.

bhantenapi hatthinā samāgacchāmi;
I encounter a stray elephant,

bhantenapi assena samāgacchāmi;
horse,

bhantenapi rathena samāgacchāmi;
chariot,

Tassa mayhaṁ, bhante, tasmiṁ samaye mussateva bhagavantaṁ ārabbha sati, mussati dhammaṁ ārabbha sati, mussati saṅghaṁ ārabbha sati.
At that time I lose mindfulness regarding the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saṅgha.

Tassa mayhaṁ, bhante, evaṁ hoti:

‘imamhi cāhaṁ samaye kālaṁ kareyyaṁ, kā mayhaṁ gati, ko abhisamparāyo’”ti?
‘If I were to die at this time, where would I be reborn in my next life?’”

“Mā bhāyi, mahānāma, mā bhāyi, mahānāma.
“Do not fear, Mahānāma, do not fear!

Apāpakaṁ te maraṇaṁ bhavissati apāpikā kālaṅkiriyā.
Your death will not be a bad one; your passing will not be a bad one.

Catūhi kho, mahānāma, dhammehi samannāgato ariyasāvako nibbānaninno hoti nibbānapoṇo nibbānapabbhāro.
A noble disciple who has four things slants, slopes, and inclines toward extinguishment.

Seyyathāpi, mahānāma, rukkho pācīnaninno pācīnapoṇo pācīnapabbhāro, so mūlacchinno katamena papateyyā”ti?
Suppose there was a tree that slants, slopes, and inclines to the east. If it was cut off at the root where would it fall?”

“Yena, bhante, ninno yena poṇo yena pabbhāro”ti.
“Sir, it would fall in the direction that it slants, slopes, and inclines.”
- 3.3
“Evameva kho, mahānāma, imehi catūhi dhammehi samannāgato ariyasāvako nibbānaninno hoti nibbānapoṇo nibbānapabbhāro”ti.
“In the same way, a noble disciple who has four things slants, slopes, and inclines toward extinguishment.”
