Ten qualities that serve as protector, in detail.

ข้อ ๑๘ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เธอทั้งหลายจงเป็นผู้มีที่พึ่งอยู่เถิด อย่าเป็นผู้ไม่มีที่พึ่งอยู่เลย (เพราะว่า) บุคคลผู้ไม่มีที่พึ่งย่อมอยู่เป็นทุกข์ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายธรรมอันกระทำที่พึ่ง ๑๐ ประการ นี้ ๑๐ ประการเป็นไฉน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีศีล ฯลฯ สมาทาน ศึกษาอยู่ในสิกขาบททั้งหลาย ภิกษุผู้เป็นเถระก็ดี เป็นมัชฌิมะก็ดี เป็นนวกะก็ดี ย่อมสำคัญ ภิกษุนั้นว่า ภิกษุนี้เป็นผู้มีศีล ฯลฯ สมาทานศึกษาอยู่ในสิกขาบททั้งหลายหนอ ดังนี้ ว่าเป็น ผู้พึงว่ากล่าวสั่งสอน ภิกษุนั้นอันภิกษุผู้เป็นเถระ ผู้เป็นมัชฌิมะ ผู้เป็นนวกะ อนุเคราะห์แล้ว พึงหวังความเจริญในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลายอย่างเดียว ไม่พึงหวังความเสื่อมเลย นี้เป็นธรรมกระทำ ที่พึ่ง ฯ

อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุเป็นผู้มีมิตรดี มีสหายดี มีเพื่อนดี ภิกษุทั้งหลายผู้เป็นเถระก็ดี เป็นมัชฌิมะก็ดี เป็นนวกะก็ดี ย่อมสำคัญภิกษุนั้นว่า ภิกษุนี้มีมิตรดี มีสหายดี มีเพื่อนดีหนอ ดังนี้ ว่าเป็นผู้พึงว่ากล่าวสั่งสอน ภิกษุนั้นอันภิกษุผู้เป็นเถระ ผู้เป็นมัชฌิมะ ผู้เป็นนวกะ อนุเคราะห์แล้ว พึงหวังความเจริญในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลายอย่างเดียว ไม่พึงหวังความเสื่อมเลย นี้เป็นธรรมกระทำที่พึ่ง ฯ

อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุเป็นผู้ว่าง่าย คือ ประกอบด้วยธรรมเครื่องกระทำความเป็นผู้ว่าง่าย เป็นผู้อดทน รับอนุสาสนีโดยเคารพ ภิกษุทั้งหลายผู้เป็นเถระก็ดี เป็นมัชฌิมะก็ดี เป็นนวกะก็ดี ย่อมสำคัญภิกษุนั้นว่า ภิกษุนี้เป็นผู้ว่าง่ายคือ ประกอบด้วยธรรมเครื่องกระทำความเป็นผู้ว่าง่าย เป็นผู้อดทน รับอนุสาสนีโดยเคารพหนอ ดังนี้ ว่าเป็นผู้พึงว่ากล่าวสั่งสอน ภิกษุนั้นอันภิกษุผู้ เป็นเถระผู้เป็นมัชฌิมะ ผู้เป็นนวกะ อนุเคราะห์แล้ว พึงหวังความเจริญในกุศลทั้งหลาย อย่างเดียว ไม่พึงหวังความเสื่อมเลย นี้เป็นธรรมกระทำที่พึ่ง ฯ

อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุเป็นผู้ขยัน ไม่เกียจคร้าน ในกิจที่ควรทำอย่างไรทั้งสูงทั้งต่ำ ของเพื่อนพรหมจรรย์ทั้งหลาย เป็นผู้ประกอบด้วยปัญญาเครื่องพิจารณาอันเป็นอุบายในกิจนั้น อาจทำ อาจจัดได้ ภิกษุทั้งหลายผู้เป็นเถระก็ดีเป็นมัชฌิมะก็ดี เป็นนวกะก็ดี ย่อมสำคัญ ภิกษุนั้นว่า ภิกษุนี้เป็นผู้ขยัน ไม่เกียจคร้านในกิจที่ควรทำอย่างไร ทั้งสูงทั้งต่ำ ของเพื่อน พรหมจรรย์ทั้งหลาย เป็นผู้ประกอบด้วยปัญญาเครื่องพิจารณาอันเป็นอุบายในกิจนั้น อาจทำ อาจจัดได้หนอดังนี้ ว่าเป็นผู้พึงว่ากล่าวสั่งสอน ภิกษุนั้น อันภิกษุผู้เป็นเถระ ผู้เป็นมัชฌิมะ ผู้เป็นนวกะ อนุเคราะห์แล้ว พึงหวังความเจริญในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลายอย่างเดียวไม่พึงหวัง ความเสื่อมเลย นี้เป็นธรรมกระทำที่พึ่ง ฯ

อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุเป็นผู้ใคร่ในธรรม เป็นผู้ฟังและแสดงธรรมอันเป็นที่รัก มีความ ปราโมทย์อย่างยิ่งในธรรมอันยิ่ง ในวินัยอันยิ่ง ภิกษุทั้งหลายผู้เป็นเถระก็ดี เป็นมัชฌิมะก็ดี

เล่ม ๒๔ · หน้า ๒๗เป็นนวกะก็ดี ย่อมสำคัญภิกษุนั้นว่า ภิกษุนี้เป็นผู้ใคร่ในธรรม เป็นผู้ฟังและแสดงธรรมอัน เป็นที่รัก มีความปราโมทย์อย่างยิ่งในธรรมอันยิ่ง ในวินัยอันยิ่งหนอ ดังนี้ ว่าเป็นผู้พึง ว่ากล่าวสั่งสอน ภิกษุนั้นอันภิกษุผู้เป็นเถระ ผู้เป็นมัชฌิมะ ผู้เป็นนวกะ อนุเคราะห์แล้ว พึงหวังความเจริญในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลายอย่างเดียวไม่พึงหวังความเสื่อมเลย นี้เป็นธรรมกระทำ ที่พึ่ง ฯ

อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุเป็นผู้ปรารภความเพียร เพื่อละอกุศลธรรมทั้งหลายเพื่อความ ถึงพร้อมแห่งกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย เป็นผู้มีกำลัง มีความบากบั่นมั่นคง ไม่ทอดธุระในกุศลธรรม ทั้งหลาย ภิกษุทั้งหลายผู้เป็นเถระก็ดี เป็นมัชฌิมะก็ดี เป็นนวกะก็ดี ย่อมสำคัญภิกษุนั้นว่า ภิกษุนี้เป็นผู้ปรารภความเพียร เพื่อละอกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย เพื่อความถึงพร้อมแห่งกุศลธรรม ทั้งหลาย เป็นผู้มีกำลัง มีความบากบั่นมั่นคง ไม่ทอดธุระในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลายอยู่หนอ ดังนี้ ว่าเป็นผู้พึงว่ากล่าวสั่งสอน ภิกษุนั้นอันภิกษุผู้เป็นเถระ ผู้เป็นมัชฌิมะ ผู้เป็นนวกะอนุเคราะห์ แล้ว พึงหวังความเจริญในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลายอย่างเดียว ไม่พึงหวังความเสื่อมเลย นี้เป็นธรรม กระทำที่พึ่ง ฯ

อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุเป็นผู้สันโดษด้วยจีวร บิณฑบาต เสนาสนะ และเภสัชบริขาร อันเป็นปัจจัยแก่คนไข้ ตามมีตามได้ ภิกษุทั้งหลายผู้เป็นเถระก็ดีเป็นมัชฌิมะก็ดี เป็นนวกะ ก็ดี ย่อมสำคัญภิกษุนั้นว่า ภิกษุนี้เป็นผู้สันโดษด้วยจีวร บิณฑบาต เสนาสนะ และเภสัช บริขารอันเป็นปัจจัยแก่คนไข้ ตามมีตามได้หนอ ดังนี้ ว่าเป็นผู้พึงว่ากล่าวสั่งสอน ภิกษุนั้น อันภิกษุผู้เป็นเถระผู้เป็นมัชฌิมะ ผู้เป็นนวกะ อนุเคราะห์แล้ว พึงหวังความเจริญในกุศลธรรม ทั้งหลายอย่างเดียว ไม่พึงหวังความเสื่อมเลย นี้เป็นธรรมกระทำที่พึ่ง ฯ

อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุเป็นผู้มีสติ คือ ประกอบด้วยสติเป็นเครื่องรักษาตนอย่างยิ่ง ระลึก ได้ ตามระลึกได้ ซึ่งสิ่งที่ทำคำที่พูดแล้วแม้นานได้ ภิกษุทั้งหลายผู้เป็นเถระก็ดี เป็นมัชฌิมะก็ดี เป็นนวกะก็ดี ย่อมสำคัญภิกษุนั้นว่าภิกษุนี้เป็นผู้มีสติ คือ ประกอบด้วยสติเป็นเครื่องรักษา ตนอย่างยิ่ง ระลึกได้ตามระลึกได้ ซึ่งสิ่งที่ทำคำที่พูดแล้วแม้นานได้หนอ ดังนี้ ว่าเป็นผู้พึง ว่ากล่าวสั่งสอน ภิกษุนั้นอันภิกษุผู้เป็นเถระ ผู้เป็นมัชฌิมะ ผู้เป็นนวกะ อนุเคราะห์แล้ว พึง หวังความเจริญในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลายอย่างเดียว ไม่พึงหวังความเสื่อมเลยนี้เป็นธรรมกระทำ ที่พึ่ง ฯ

เล่ม ๒๔ · หน้า ๒๘อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุผู้มีปัญญา คือ ประกอบด้วยปัญญา อันเห็นความเกิดความดับ เป็นอริยะ ชำแรกกิเลส ให้ถึงความสิ้นทุกข์โดยชอบ ภิกษุทั้งหลายผู้เป็นเถระก็ดี เป็นมัชฌิมะ ก็ดี เป็นนวกะก็ดี ย่อมสำคัญภิกษุนั้นว่า ภิกษุนี้เป็นผู้มีปัญญา คือ ประกอบด้วยปัญญาอันเห็น ความเกิดความดับ เป็นอริยะชำแรกกิเลส ให้ถึงความสิ้นทุกข์โดยชอบหนอ ดังนี้ ว่าเป็นผู้ พึงว่ากล่าวสั่งสอนภิกษุนั้นอันภิกษุผู้เป็นเถระ ผู้เป็นมัชฌิมะ ผู้เป็นนวกะ อนุเคราะห์แล้ว พึงหวังความเจริญในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลายอย่างเดียว ไม่พึงหวังความเสื่อมเลย นี้เป็นธรรมกระทำ ที่พึ่ง ฯ

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

    So I have heard.

    ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

    Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

    There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,

    “bhikkhavo”ti.

    “Mendicants!”

    “Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

    “Venerable sir,” they replied.

    The Buddha said this:

    “Sanāthā, bhikkhave, viharatha, mā anāthā.

    “Mendicants, you should live with a protector, not without one.

    Dukkhaṁ, bhikkhave, anātho viharati.

    Living without a protector is suffering.

    Dasayime, bhikkhave, nāthakaraṇā dhammā.

    There are ten qualities that serve as protector.

    Katame dasa?

    What ten?

    Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sīlavā hoti …pe… samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu.

    Firstly, a mendicant is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken.

    ‘Sīlavā vatāyaṁ bhikkhu pātimokkhasaṁvarasaṁvuto viharati ācāragocarasampanno aṇumattesu vajjesu bhayadassāvī, samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesū’ti therāpi naṁ bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti, majjhimāpi bhikkhū … navāpi bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti.

    Knowing this, the mendicants—whether senior, middle, or junior—think that mendicant is worth advising and instructing.

    Tassa therānukampitassa majjhimānukampitassa navānukampitassa vuddhiyeva pāṭikaṅkhā kusalesu dhammesu, no parihāni.

    Being treated with such kindness by the senior, middle, and junior mendicants, that mendicant can expect only growth, not decline.

    Ayampi dhammo nāthakaraṇo.

    This is a quality that serves as protector.

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu bahussuto hoti …pe… diṭṭhiyā suppaṭividdhā.

    Furthermore, a mendicant is very learned, remembering and keeping what they’ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice that’s entirely full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reinforcing them by recitation, mentally scrutinizing them, and penetrating them theoretically.

    ‘Bahussuto vatāyaṁ bhikkhu sutadharo sutasannicayo, ye te dhammā ādikalyāṇā majjhekalyāṇā pariyosānakalyāṇā sātthaṁ sabyañjanaṁ kevalaparipuṇṇaṁ parisuddhaṁ brahmacariyaṁ abhivadanti, tathārūpāssa dhammā bahussutā honti dhātā vacasā paricitā manasānupekkhitā diṭṭhiyā suppaṭividdhā’ti therāpi naṁ bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti, majjhimāpi bhikkhū … navāpi bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti.

    Knowing this, the mendicants—whether senior, middle, or junior—think that mendicant is worth advising and instructing.

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kalyāṇamitto hoti kalyāṇasahāyo kalyāṇasampavaṅko.

    Furthermore, a mendicant has good friends, companions, and associates.

    ‘Kalyāṇamitto vatāyaṁ bhikkhu kalyāṇasahāyo kalyāṇasampavaṅko’ti therāpi naṁ bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti, majjhimāpi bhikkhū … navāpi bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti.

    Knowing this, the mendicants—whether senior, middle, or junior—think that mendicant is worth advising and instructing.

    This too is a quality that serves as protector.

  26. 5.1

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu suvaco hoti sovacassakaraṇehi dhammehi samannāgato, khamo padakkhiṇaggāhī anusāsaniṁ.

    Furthermore, a mendicant is easy to admonish, having qualities that make them easy to admonish. They’re patient, and take instruction respectfully.

    ‘Suvaco vatāyaṁ bhikkhu sovacassakaraṇehi dhammehi samannāgato, khamo padakkhiṇaggāhī anusāsanin’ti therāpi naṁ bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti, majjhimāpi bhikkhū … navāpi bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti.

    Knowing this, the mendicants—whether senior, middle, or junior—think that mendicant is worth advising and instructing.

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu yāni tāni sabrahmacārīnaṁ uccāvacāni kiṅkaraṇīyāni, tattha dakkho hoti analaso, tatrūpāyāya vīmaṁsāya samannāgato, alaṁ kātuṁ alaṁ saṁvidhātuṁ.

    Furthermore, a mendicant is deft and tireless in a diverse spectrum of duties for their spiritual companions, understanding how to go about things in order to complete and organize the work.

  31. 6.2

    ‘Yāni tāni sabrahmacārīnaṁ uccāvacāni kiṅkaraṇīyāni, tattha dakkho vatāyaṁ bhikkhu analaso, tatrūpāyāya vīmaṁsāya samannāgato, alaṁ kātuṁ alaṁ saṁvidhātun’ti therāpi naṁ bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti, majjhimāpi bhikkhū … navāpi bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti.

    This too is a quality that serves as protector.

  34. 7.1

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammakāmo hoti piyasamudāhāro, abhidhamme abhivinaye uḷārapāmojjo.

    Furthermore, a mendicant loves the teachings and is a delight to converse with, being full of joy in the teaching and training.

  35. 7.2

    ‘Dhammakāmo vatāyaṁ bhikkhu piyasamudāhāro, abhidhamme abhivinaye uḷārapāmojjo’ti therāpi naṁ bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti, majjhimāpi bhikkhū … navāpi bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti.

    Knowing this, the mendicants—whether senior, middle, or junior—think that mendicant is worth advising and instructing.

  36. 7.3

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu āraddhavīriyo viharati akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya, kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ upasampadāya, thāmavā daḷhaparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu ‘āraddhavīriyo vatāyaṁ bhikkhu viharati akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya, kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ upasampadāya, thāmavā daḷhaparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesū’ti therāpi naṁ bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti, majjhimāpi bhikkhū …

    Furthermore, a mendicant lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. They are strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities.

    navāpi bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti.

    Knowing this, the mendicants—whether senior, middle, or junior—think that mendicant is worth advising and instructing.

  40. 8.3

    Tassa therānukampitassa majjhimānukampitassa navānukampitassa vuddhiyeva pāṭikaṅkhā kusalesu dhammesu, no parihāni.

    Being treated with such kindness by the senior, middle, and junior mendicants, that mendicant can expect only growth, not decline.

  41. 8.4

    Ayampi dhammo nāthakaraṇo.

    This too is a quality that serves as protector.

  42. 9.1

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti itarītaracīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhārena.

    Furthermore, a mendicant is content with any kind of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick.

  43. 9.2

    ‘Santuṭṭho vatāyaṁ bhikkhu itarītaracīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhārenā’ti therāpi naṁ bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti, majjhimāpi bhikkhū … navāpi bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti.

  44. 9.3

    Tassa therānukampitassa majjhimānukampitassa navānukampitassa vuddhiyeva pāṭikaṅkhā kusalesu dhammesu, no parihāni.

    Being treated with such kindness by the senior, middle, and junior mendicants, that mendicant can expect only growth, not decline.

  45. 9.4

    Ayampi dhammo nāthakaraṇo.

    This too is a quality that serves as protector.

  46. 10.1

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu satimā hoti paramena satinepakkena samannāgato, cirakatampi cirabhāsitampi saritā anussaritā.

    Furthermore, a mendicant is mindful. They have utmost mindfulness and alertness, and can remember and recall what was said and done long ago.

  47. 10.2

    ‘Satimā vatāyaṁ bhikkhu paramena satinepakkena samannāgato, cirakatampi cirabhāsitampi saritā anussaritā’ti therāpi naṁ bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti, majjhimāpi bhikkhū … navāpi bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti.

    Furthermore, a mendicant is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering.

  51. 11.2

    ‘Paññavā vatāyaṁ bhikkhu udayatthagāminiyā paññāya samannāgato ariyāya nibbedhikāya sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyā’ti therāpi naṁ bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti, majjhimāpi bhikkhū … navāpi bhikkhū vattabbaṁ anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti.

    Sanāthā, bhikkhave, viharatha, mā anāthā.

    You should live with a protector, not without one.

  55. 12.2

    Dukkhaṁ, bhikkhave, anātho viharati.

    Living without a protector is suffering.

  56. 12.3

    Ime kho, bhikkhave, dasa nāthakaraṇā dhammā”ti.

    These are the ten qualities that serve as protector.”

  57. 12.4

    Idamavoca bhagavā.

    That is what the Buddha said.

  58. 12.5

    Attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandunti.

    Satisfied, the mendicants approved what the Buddha said.

  59. 12.6

    Aṭṭhamaṁ.
