เล่ม ๒๐ · หน้า ๑๑๕ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย คนไข้ ๓ จำพวกนี้ มีปรากฏอยู่ในโลก ๓ จำพวกเป็นไฉน คือ คนไข้บางคนในโลกนี้ ได้โภชนะที่สบายหรือไม่ได้ก็ตาม ได้เภสัชที่สบายหรือไม่ได้ก็ตาม ได้อุปัฏฐากที่สมควรหรือไม่ได้ก็ตามย่อมไม่หายจากอาพาธนั้นได้เลย คนไข้บางคนในโลกนี้ ได้โภชนะที่สบายหรือไม่ได้ก็ตาม ได้เภสัชที่สบายหรือไม่ได้ก็ตาม ได้อุปัฏฐากที่สมควรหรือ ไม่ได้ก็ตามย่อมหายจากอาพาธนั้นได้ คนไข้บางคนในโลกนี้ ได้โภชนะที่สบายจึงหายจากอาพาธ นั้น เมื่อไม่ได้ย่อมไม่หาย ได้เภสัชที่สบายจึงหายจากอาพาธนั้น เมื่อไม่ได้ย่อมไม่หาย ได้ อุปัฏฐากที่สมควรจึงหายจากอาพาธนั้น เมื่อไม่ได้ย่อมไม่หาย ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย บรรดาคนไข้ ๓ จำพวกนั้น เพราะอาศัยคนไข้ผู้ที่ได้ ---โภชนะที่สบายจึงหายจากอาพาธนั้น เมื่อไม่ได้ย่อมไม่หาย

ได้เภสัชที่สบายจึงหายจากอาพาธนั้น เมื่อไม่ได้ย่อมไม่หาย ได้อุปัฏฐากที่สมควรจึงจะหายจาก อาพาธนั้น เมื่อไม่ได้ย่อมไม่หาย นี้เราจึงอนุญาตคิลานภัต อนุญาตคิลานเภสัช อนุญาตคิลานุ ปัฏฐากไว้ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย และก็เพราะอาศัยคนไข้เช่นนี้ ถึงคนไข้อื่นก็ควรได้รับการบำรุง

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย คนไข้ ๓ จำพวกนี้แล มีปรากฏอยู่ในโลก ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันนั้นเหมือน กัน บุคคลซึ่งเปรียบด้วยคนไข้ ๓ จำพวกนี้ มีปรากฏอยู่ในโลก บุคคลผู้เปรียบด้วยคนไข้ ๓ จำพวกนั้นเป็นไฉน คือ บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ ได้เห็นพระตถาคตหรือไม่ได้เห็นก็ตาม ได้ ฟังธรรมวินัยที่พระตถาคตประกาศแล้วหรือไม่ได้ฟังก็ตาม ย่อมไม่หยั่งลงสู่ความเห็นชอบในกุศล ธรรม คือ จตุรมรรคได้เลย บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ ได้เห็นพระตถาคตหรือไม่ได้เห็นก็ตาม ได้ฟังธรรมวินัยที่พระตถาคตประกาศแล้วหรือไม่ได้ฟังก็ตาม ย่อมหยั่งลงสู่ความเห็นชอบในกุศล ธรรม คือจตุรมรรค บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ ได้เห็นพระตถาคต จึงหยั่งลงสู่ความเห็นชอบ ในกุศลธรรม คือ จตุรมรรค เมื่อไม่ได้เห็นย่อมไม่หยั่งลงสู่ความเห็นชอบได้ฟังธรรมวินัยที่ พระตถาคตประกาศแล้ว จึงหยั่งลงสู่ความเห็นชอบในกุศลธรรมคือ จตุรมรรค เมื่อไม่ได้ฟัง ย่อมไม่หยั่งลงสู่ความเห็นชอบ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายบรรดาบุคคลทั้ง ๓ จำพวกนั้น เพราะอาศัย บุคคลผู้ที่ได้เห็นพระตถาคต จึงหยั่งลงสู่ความเห็นชอบในกุศลธรรม คือจตุรมรรค เมื่อไม่ได้ เห็นย่อมไม่หยั่งลงสู่ความเห็นชอบ ได้ฟังธรรมวินัยที่พระตถาคตทรงประกาศแล้ว จึงหยั่งลงสู่ ความเห็นชอบในกุศลธรรม คือ จตุรมรรค เมื่อไม่ได้ฟังย่อมไม่หยั่งลง นี้แล เราจึงอนุญาต

    “Tayome, bhikkhave, gilānā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.

    “These three patients are found in the world.

    Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco gilāno labhanto vā sappāyāni bhojanāni alabhanto vā sappāyāni bhojanāni, labhanto vā sappāyāni bhesajjāni alabhanto vā sappāyāni bhesajjāni, labhanto vā patirūpaṁ upaṭṭhākaṁ alabhanto vā patirūpaṁ upaṭṭhākaṁ neva vuṭṭhāti tamhā ābādhā.

    In some cases a patient won’t recover from an illness, regardless of whether or not they get suitable food and medicines, and a capable carer.

    Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco gilāno labhanto vā sappāyāni bhojanāni alabhanto vā sappāyāni bhojanāni, labhanto vā sappāyāni bhesajjāni alabhanto vā sappāyāni bhesajjāni, labhanto vā patirūpaṁ upaṭṭhākaṁ alabhanto vā patirūpaṁ upaṭṭhākaṁ vuṭṭhāti tamhā ābādhā.

    In some cases a patient will recover from an illness, regardless of whether or not they get suitable food and medicines, and a capable carer.

    Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco gilāno labhantova sappāyāni bhojanāni no alabhanto, labhantova sappāyāni bhesajjāni no alabhanto, labhantova patirūpaṁ upaṭṭhākaṁ no alabhanto vuṭṭhāti tamhā ābādhā.

    In some cases a patient can recover from an illness, but only if they get suitable food and medicines, and a capable carer, and not if they don’t get these things.

    Tatra, bhikkhave, yvāyaṁ gilāno labhantova sappāyāni bhojanāni no alabhanto, labhantova sappāyāni bhesajjāni no alabhanto, labhantova patirūpaṁ upaṭṭhākaṁ no alabhanto vuṭṭhāti tamhā ābādhā, imaṁ kho, bhikkhave, gilānaṁ paṭicca gilānabhattaṁ anuññātaṁ gilānabhesajjaṁ anuññātaṁ gilānupaṭṭhāko anuññāto.

    Now, it’s for the sake of the last patient—who will recover only if they get suitable food and medicines, and a capable carer—that food, medicines, and a carer are prescribed.

    Imañca pana, bhikkhave, gilānaṁ paṭicca aññepi gilānā upaṭṭhātabbā.

    But also, for the sake of this patient, the other patients should be looked after.

  11. 4.3

    Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo gilānā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.

    These are the three kinds of patients found in the world.

  12. 5.1

    Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tayome gilānūpamā puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.

    In the same way, these three individuals similar to patients are found in the world.

    Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo labhanto vā tathāgataṁ dassanāya alabhanto vā tathāgataṁ dassanāya, labhanto vā tathāgatappaveditaṁ dhammavinayaṁ savanāya alabhanto vā tathāgatappaveditaṁ dhammavinayaṁ savanāya neva okkamati niyāmaṁ kusalesu dhammesu sammattaṁ.

    Some people don’t step into the sure path with regard to skillful qualities, regardless of whether or not they get to see a Realized One, and to hear the teaching and training that he proclaims.

    Idha, pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo labhanto vā tathāgataṁ dassanāya alabhanto vā tathāgataṁ dassanāya, labhanto vā tathāgatappaveditaṁ dhammavinayaṁ savanāya alabhanto vā tathāgatappaveditaṁ dhammavinayaṁ savanāya okkamati niyāmaṁ kusalesu dhammesu sammattaṁ.

    Some people can step into the sure path with regard to skillful qualities, but only if they get to see a Realized One, and to hear the teaching and training that he proclaims, and not when they don’t get those things.

  17. 8.1

    Tatra, bhikkhave, yvāyaṁ puggalo labhantova tathāgataṁ dassanāya no alabhanto, labhantova tathāgatappaveditaṁ dhammavinayaṁ savanāya no alabhanto okkamati niyāmaṁ kusalesu dhammesu sammattaṁ, imaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalaṁ paṭicca dhammadesanā anuññātā.

    Now, it’s for the sake of this last individual that teaching the Dhamma is prescribed, that is, the one who can step into the sure path with regard to skillful qualities, but only if they get to see a Realized One, and to hear the teaching and training that he proclaims.

  18. 8.2

    Imañca pana, bhikkhave, puggalaṁ paṭicca aññesampi dhammo desetabbo.

    But also, for the sake of this individual, the other people should be taught Dhamma.

  19. 8.3

    Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo gilānūpamā puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmin”ti.

    These are the three individuals similar to patients found in the world.”

    Dutiyaṁ.
