ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ข้อ ๑๗๗ครั้งนั้นแล ท่านพระราหุลเข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ถวายบังคม พระผู้มีพระภาคแล้ว นั่ง ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่ง ครั้นแล้ว พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสกะท่านพระ ราหุลว่า ดูกรราหุล ปฐวีธาตุที่เป็นภายในก็ดี เป็นภายนอกก็ดี ปฐวีธาตุนั้นก็เป็นแต่สักว่าปฐวีธาตุ เท่านั้น พึงเห็นปฐวีธาตุนั้นด้วยปัญญาอันชอบตามความเป็นจริงอย่างนี้ว่า นั่นไม่ใช่ของเรา นั่นไม่ เป็นเรา นั่นไม่ใช่ตัวตนของเรา เพราะเห็นด้วยปัญญาอันชอบตามความเป็นจริงอย่างนั้น จิตย่อม เบื่อหน่ายในปฐวีธาตุ ย่อมคลายกำหนัดในปฐวีธาตุ ดูกรราหุล อาโปธาตุที่เป็นภายในก็ดี เป็นภาย นอกก็ดี อาโปธาตุนั้นก็เป็นแต่สักว่าอาโปธาตุเท่านั้น พึงเห็นอาโปธาตุนั้น ด้วยปัญญาอันชอบตาม ความเป็นจริงอย่างนี้ว่า นั่นไม่ใช่ของเรานั่นไม่เป็นเรา นั่นไม่ใช่ตัวตนของตน เพราะเห็นด้วยปัญญา
เล่ม ๒๑ · หน้า ๑๖๐อันชอบตามความเป็นจริงนั้น จิตย่อมเบื่อหน่ายในอาโปธาตุ ย่อมคลายกำหนัดในอาโปธาตุ ดูกร ราหุล เตโชธาตุที่เป็นภายในก็ดี เป็นภายนอกก็ดี เตโชธาตุนั้นก็เป็นแต่สักว่าเตโชธาตุเท่านั้น พึงเห็นเตโชธาตุนั้นด้วยปัญญาอันชอบตามความเป็นจริงอย่างนี้ว่า นั่นไม่ใช่ของเรา นั่นไม่เป็นเรา นั่นไม่ใช่ตัวตนของเรา เพราะเห็นด้วยปัญญาอันชอบตามความเป็นจริงอย่างนั้น จิตย่อมเบื่อหน่าย ในเตโชธาตุ ย่อมคลายกำหนัดในเตโชธาตุ ดูกรราหุล วาโยธาตุที่เป็นภายในก็ดี เป็นภายนอกก็ดี วาโยธาตุนั้นก็เป็นแต่สักว่าวาโยธาตุเท่านั้น พึงเห็นวาโยธาตุนั้นด้วยปัญญาอันชอบตามความเป็น จริงอย่างนี้ว่า นั่นไม่ใช่ของเรา นั่นไม่เป็นเรา นั่นไม่ใช่ตัวตนของเรา เพราะเห็นด้วยปัญญาอัน ชอบตามความเป็นจริงอย่างนั้น จิตย่อมเบื่อหน่ายในวาโยธาตุ ย่อมคลายกำหนัดในวาโยธาตุ ดูกร ราหุล เพราะเหตุที่ภิกษุพิจารณาเห็นว่ามิใช่ตัวตน ไม่เนื่องในตน ในธาตุ ๔ นี้ ภิกษุนี้เรากล่าวว่า
ตัดตัณหาได้แล้ว รื้อถอนสังโยชน์เสียได้ กระทำที่สุดแห่งทุกข์ได้แล้วเพราะละมานะได้โดยชอบ ฯ

18. Intention
Rāhulasutta
With Rāhula
- 1.1
Atha kho āyasmā rāhulo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ rāhulaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:
Then Venerable Rāhula went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

“Yā ca, rāhula, ajjhattikā pathavīdhātu yā ca bāhirā pathavīdhātu, pathavīdhāturevesā.
“Rāhula, the interior earth element and the exterior earth element are just the earth element.
- 2.2
‘Taṁ netaṁ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attā’ti, evametaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya daṭṭhabbaṁ.
This should be truly seen with right understanding like this: ‘This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.’

Evametaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya disvā pathavīdhātuyā nibbindati, pathavīdhātuyā cittaṁ virājeti.
When you truly see with right understanding, you grow disillusioned with the earth element, detaching the mind from the earth element.
- 3.1
Yā ca, rāhula, ajjhattikā āpodhātu yā ca bāhirā āpodhātu, āpodhāturevesā.
The interior water element and the exterior water element are just the water element.
- 3.2
‘Taṁ netaṁ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attā’ti, evametaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya daṭṭhabbaṁ.
This should be truly seen with right understanding like this: ‘This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.’

When you truly see with right understanding, you grow disillusioned with the water element, detaching the mind from the water element.

The interior fire element and the exterior fire element are just the fire element.

This should be truly seen with right understanding like this: ‘This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.’

When you truly see with right understanding, you grow disillusioned with the fire element, detaching the mind from the fire element.

The interior air element and the exterior air element are just the air element.
- 5.2
‘Taṁ netaṁ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attā’ti, evametaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya daṭṭhabbaṁ.
This should be truly seen with right understanding like this: ‘This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.’

Evametaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya disvā vāyodhātuyā nibbindati, vāyodhātuyā cittaṁ virājeti.
When you truly see with right understanding, you grow disillusioned with the air element, detaching the mind from the air element.
- 6.1
Yato kho, rāhula, bhikkhu imāsu catūsu dhātūsu nevattānaṁ na attaniyaṁ samanupassati, ayaṁ vuccati, rāhula, bhikkhu acchecchi taṇhaṁ, vivattayi saṁyojanaṁ, sammā mānābhisamayā antamakāsi dukkhassā”ti.
When a mendicant sees these four elements as neither self nor belonging to self, they’re called a mendicant who has cut off craving, cast off the fetters, and by rightly comprehending conceit has made an end of suffering.”
