ข้อ ๓๗ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๔ ประการ เป็นผู้ไม่ควรเพื่อเสื่อม รอบ ชื่อว่าย่อมประพฤติใกล้นิพพานทีเดียว ธรรม ๔ ประการเป็นไฉน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุ ในธรรมวินัยนี้ ย่อมเป็นผู้สมบูรณ์ด้วยศีล ๑เป็นผู้คุ้มครองทวารในอินทรีย์ทั้งหลาย ๑ เป็นผู้รู้ ประมาณในโภชนะ ๑ เป็นผู้ประกอบเนืองๆ ซึ่งมีความเพียรเครื่องตื่นอยู่ ๑ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ภิกษุเป็นผู้สมบูรณ์ด้วยศีลอย่างไร ภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีศีลสำรวมระวังในพระปาติโมกข์ ถึงพร้อมด้วยอาจาระและโคจร มีปรกติเห็นภัยในโทษมีประมาณน้อยสมาทานศึกษาอยู่ในสิกขาบท ทั้งหลาย ภิกษุเป็นผู้สมบูรณ์ด้วยศีลอย่างนี้แล ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ภิกษุเป็นผู้คุ้มครองทวารใน อินทรีย์ทั้งหลายอย่างไร ภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ เห็นรูปด้วยจักษุแล้ว ไม่ถือเอาโดยนิมิต ไม่ถือเอา โดยอนุพยัญชนะย่อมประพฤติเพื่อสำรวมจักขุนทรีย์ ที่เมื่อไม่สำรวมแล้ว จะเป็นเหตุให้อกุศล ธรรมอันลามก คือ อภิชฌาและโทมนัสครอบงำได้ ชื่อว่ารักษาจักขุนทรีย์ ชื่อว่าถึงความสำรวมใน จักขุนทรีย์ ภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ ฟังเสียงด้วยหู … ดมกลิ่นด้วยจมูก … ลิ้มรสด้วยลิ้น … ถูกต้อง โผฏฐัพพะด้วยกาย … รู้แจ้งธรรมารมณ์ด้วยใจแล้ว ไม่ถือเอาโดยนิมิต ไม่ถือเอาโดยอนุพยัญชนะ ย่อมปฏิบัติเพื่อสำรวมมนินทรีย์ ที่เมื่อไม่สำรวมแล้ว จะเป็นเหตุให้อกุศลธรรมอันลามก คือ อภิชฌา และโทมนัสครอบงำได้ ชื่อว่ารักษามนินทรีย์ ชื่อว่าถึงความสำรวมในมนินทรีย์ ภิกษุเป็นผู้คุ้มครอง ทวารในอินทรีย์ทั้งหลายอย่างนี้แล ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ภิกษุเป็นผู้รู้ประมาณในโภชนะอย่างไร
ภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ พิจารณาโดยแยบคายแล้วย่อมกลืนกินซึ่งอาหารมิใช่เพื่อจะเล่น มิใช่เพื่อจะ มัวเมา มิใช่เพื่อประเทืองผิวมิใช่เพื่อจะตกแต่ง เพียงเพื่อร่างกายนี้ดำรงอยู่ได้ เพื่อ ยังอัตภาพให้เป็นไปเพื่อกำจัดความลำบาก เพื่ออนุเคราะห์พรหมจรรย์ ด้วยหวังว่า จักกำจัดเวทนา เก่าและจักไม่ยังเวทนาใหม่ให้บังเกิดขึ้น ความเป็นไป ความที่ร่างกายไม่มีโทษ และความอยู่ สำราญจักมีแก่เรา ด้วยอาการอย่างนี้ ภิกษุเป็นผู้รู้ประมาณในโภชนะอย่างนี้แล ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย
ภิกษุเป็นผู้ประกอบเนืองๆ ซึ่งความเพียรเครื่องตื่นอยู่อย่างไร ภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ ย่อมชำระจิต
เล่ม ๒๑ · หน้า ๔๐ให้บริสุทธิ์จากธรรมเครื่องกั้นด้วยการเดินจงกรม ด้วยการนั่งตลอดวัน ย่อมชำระจิตให้บริสุทธิ์จาก ธรรมเครื่องกั้นด้วยการเดินจงกรม ด้วยการนั่งตลอดปฐมยามแห่งราตรี ย่อมสำเร็จสีหไสยาโดยข้าง เบื้องขวา ซ้อนเท้าเหลื่อมเท้า มีสติสัมปชัญญะ มนสิการความสำคัญในอันจะลุกขึ้น ตลอด มัชฌิมยามแห่งราตรี ลุกขึ้นแล้วย่อมชำระจิตให้บริสุทธิ์จากธรรมเครื่องกั้นด้วยการเดินจงกรม ด้วย การนั่ง ตลอดปัจฉิมยามแห่งราตรี ภิกษุเป็นผู้ประกอบเนืองๆ ซึ่งความเพียรเครื่องตื่นอยู่อย่างนี้แล ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๔ ประการนี้แล เป็นผู้ไม่ควรเพื่อเสื่อมรอบ ชื่อว่า ย่อมประพฤติใกล้นิพพานทีเดียว ฯ
ภิกษุผู้ดำรงอยู่ในศีล สำรวมในอินทรีย์ทั้งหลาย รู้ประมาณ
ในโภชนะ และย่อมประกอบเนืองๆ ซึ่งความเพียร
เครื่องตื่น อยู่ ภิกษุผู้มีปรกติพากเพียรอยู่อย่างนี้ ไม่
เกียจคร้านตลอดวันและคืน บำเพ็ญกุศลธรรมเพื่อถึง
ความเกษมจากโยคะภิกษุผู้ยินดีในความไม่ประมาทหรือ
มีปรกติเห็นภัยในความ ประมาทเป็นผู้ไม่ควรเพื่อความเสื่อม
ชื่อว่าประพฤติใกล้ นิพพานทีเดียว ฯ

A mendicant is accomplished in ethics, guards the sense doors, eats in moderation, and is dedicated to wakefulness.

And how is a mendicant accomplished in ethics?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sīlavā hoti pātimokkhasaṁvarasaṁvuto viharati ācāragocarasampanno aṇumattesu vajjesu bhayadassāvī, samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu.
It’s when a mendicant is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sīlasampanno hoti.
That’s how a mendicant is accomplished in ethics.

And how does a mendicant guard the sense doors?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhunā rūpaṁ disvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī.
When a mendicant sees a sight with their eyes, they don’t get caught up in the features and details.

Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṁ cakkhundriyaṁ asaṁvutaṁ viharantaṁ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṁ, tassa saṁvarāya paṭipajjati; rakkhati cakkhundriyaṁ; cakkhundriye saṁvaraṁ āpajjati.
If the faculty of sight were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. For this reason, they practice restraint, protecting the faculty of sight, and achieving its restraint.

Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṁ manindriyaṁ asaṁvutaṁ viharantaṁ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṁ, tassa saṁvarāya paṭipajjati; rakkhati manindriyaṁ; manindriye saṁvaraṁ āpajjati.
If the faculty of mind were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. For this reason, they practice restraint, protecting the faculty of mind, and achieving its restraint.

And how does a mendicant eat in moderation?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paṭisaṅkhā yoniso āhāraṁ āhāreti:
It’s when a mendicant reflects rationally on the food that they eat:
- 4.3
‘neva davāya na madāya na maṇḍanāya na vibhūsanāya; yāvadeva imassa kāyassa ṭhitiyā yāpanāya vihiṁsūparatiyā brahmacariyānuggahāya. Iti purāṇañca vedanaṁ paṭihaṅkhāmi, navañca vedanaṁ na uppādessāmi, yātrā ca me bhavissati, anavajjatā ca phāsuvihāro cā’ti.
‘Not for fun, indulgence, adornment, or decoration, but only to sustain this body, to avoid harm, and to support spiritual practice. In this way, I shall put an end to old discomfort and not give rise to new discomfort, and I will have the means to keep going, blamelessness, and a comfortable abiding.’

That’s how a mendicant eats in moderation.

Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu jāgariyaṁ anuyutto hoti?
And how is a mendicant dedicated to wakefulness?
- 5.2
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu divasaṁ caṅkamena nisajjāya āvaraṇīyehi dhammehi cittaṁ parisodheti;
It’s when a mendicant practices walking and sitting meditation by day, purifying their mind from obstacles.
- 5.3
rattiyā paṭhamaṁ yāmaṁ caṅkamena nisajjāya āvaraṇīyehi dhammehi cittaṁ parisodheti;
In the first watch of the night, they continue to practice walking and sitting meditation.
- 5.4
rattiyā majjhimaṁ yāmaṁ dakkhiṇena passena sīhaseyyaṁ kappeti, pāde pādaṁ accādhāya, sato sampajāno uṭṭhānasaññaṁ manasi karitvā;
In the middle watch, they lie down in the lion’s posture—on the right side, placing one foot on top of the other—mindful and aware, and focused on the time of getting up.

rattiyā pacchimaṁ yāmaṁ paccuṭṭhāya caṅkamena nisajjāya āvaraṇīyehi dhammehi cittaṁ parisodheti.
In the last watch, they get up and continue to practice walking and sitting meditation, purifying their mind from obstacles.
- 5.6
Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu jāgariyaṁ anuyutto hoti.
This is how a mendicant is dedicated to wakefulness.
- 5.7
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu abhabbo parihānāya, nibbānasseva santiketi.
A mendicant who possesses these four qualities can’t decline, and has drawn near to extinguishment.

Established in ethics,

indriyesu ca saṁvuto;
restrained in the sense faculties,

Bhojanamhi ca mattaññū,

a mendicant lives like this, with keen energy,

tireless all night and day,

developing skillful qualities,

for the sake of sanctuary from the yoke.

A mendicant who loves diligence,

pamāde bhayadassi vā;
seeing fear in negligence,
