Udāyīsutta
When told Venerable Udāyī is teaching, the Buddha defines five factors that a Dhamma teacher should establish in themselves.

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ข้อ ๑๕๙สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ โฆสิตาราม ใกล้เมืองโกสัมพี สมัยนั้น ท่านพระอุทายีผู้อันคฤหัสถ์บริษัทหมู่ใหญ่แวดล้อมแล้ว นั่งแสดงธรรมอยู่ ท่านพระ อานนท์ได้เห็นท่านพระอุทายี ผู้อันคฤหัสถ์บริษัทหมู่ใหญ่แวดล้อมแล้ว นั่งแสดงธรรมอยู่ จึง ได้เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับถวายบังคมแล้วนั่ง ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่ง ครั้นแล้วได้ กราบทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ท่านพระอุทายี ผู้อันคฤหัสถ์บริษัทหมู่ใหญ่แวดล้อมแล้ว นั่งแสดงธรรมอยู่ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ดูกรอานนท์ การแสดงธรรมแก่ผู้อื่นไม่ใช่ทำได้ง่าย ภิกษุเมื่อจะแสดงธรรมแก่ผู้อื่น พึงตั้งธรรม ๕ ประการไว้ภายใน แล้วจึงแสดงธรรมแก่ผู้อื่น ๕ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ ภิกษุพึงตั้งใจว่า เราจักแสดงธรรมไปโดยลำดับ ๑ เราจักแสดงอ้าง เหตุผล ๑ เราจักแสดงธรรมอาศัยความเอ็นดู ๑ เราจักเป็นผู้ไม่เพ่งอามิสแสดงธรรม ๑ เราจัก ไม่แสดงให้กระทบตนและผู้อื่น ๑ แล้วจึงแสดงธรรมแก่ผู้อื่น ดูกรอานนท์ การแสดงธรรม แก่ผู้อื่นไม่ใช่ทำได้ง่าย ภิกษุเมื่อจะแสดงธรรมแก่ผู้อื่น พึงตั้งธรรม ๕ ประการนี้ไว้ในภายใน แล้ว จึงแสดงธรรมแก่ผู้อื่น ฯ

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard.

ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Kosambī in Ghosita’s monastery.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā udāyī mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivuto dhammaṁ desento nisinno hoti.
Now, at that time Venerable Udāyī was sitting teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople.

Addasā kho āyasmā ānando āyasmantaṁ udāyiṁ mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivutaṁ dhammaṁ desentaṁ nisinnaṁ.
Seeing this, Venerable Ānanda

Disvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

“āyasmā, bhante, udāyī mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivuto dhammaṁ desetī”ti.
“Sir, Venerable Udāyī is teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople.”

“Na kho, ānanda, sukaraṁ paresaṁ dhammaṁ desetuṁ.
“Ānanda, it’s not easy to teach Dhamma to others.

Paresaṁ, ānanda, dhammaṁ desentena pañca dhamme ajjhattaṁ upaṭṭhāpetvā paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo.
You should establish five things in yourself before teaching Dhamma to others.

What five?

‘Anupubbiṁ kathaṁ kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo;
You should teach Dhamma to others thinking: ‘I will teach step by step.’ …

‘pariyāyadassāvī kathaṁ kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo;
‘I will teach showing my method.’ …
- 2.6
‘anuddayataṁ paṭicca kathaṁ kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo;
‘I will teach out of kindness.’ …
- 2.7
‘na āmisantaro kathaṁ kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo;
‘I will not teach while secretly hoping to profit.’ …
- 2.8
‘attānañca parañca anupahacca kathaṁ kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo.
‘I will teach without damaging myself or others.’
- 2.9
Na kho, ānanda, sukaraṁ paresaṁ dhammaṁ desetuṁ.
It’s not easy to teach Dhamma to others.
- 2.10
Paresaṁ, ānanda, dhammaṁ desentena ime pañca dhamme ajjhattaṁ upaṭṭhāpetvā paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo”ti.
You should establish these five things in yourself before teaching Dhamma to others.”
