Paṭhamadhammavihārīsutta

The difference between someone who merely studies the letter of the Dharma, and someone who truly lives by it.

ฉบับหลวงธรรมวิหาริกสูตรที่ ๑

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

ข้อ ๗๓ครั้งนั้นแล ภิกษุรูปหนึ่ง เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ถวายบังคม แล้วนั่ง ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่ง ครั้นแล้วได้ทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาคว่าข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ที่ เรียกว่าผู้อยู่ในธรรมๆ ดังนี้ ภิกษุชื่อว่าเป็นผู้อยู่ในธรรมด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่าไรหนอ ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ดูกรภิกษุ ภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ ย่อมเรียนธรรมคือ สุตตะ เคยยะ เวยยากรณะ คาถา อุทาน อิติวุตตกะ ชาดก อัพภูตธรรมเวทัลละ เธอย่อมปล่อย ให้วันคืนล่วงไป ละการหลีกออกเร้นอยู่ ไม่ประกอบความสงบใจในภายใน เพราะการเรียนธรรม นั้น ภิกษุนี้เรียกว่าเป็นผู้มากด้วยการเรียน ไม่ชื่อว่าเป็นผู้อยู่ในธรรม ฯ

อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุย่อมแสดงธรรมตามที่ได้สดับมาแล้ว ตามที่ได้เรียนมาแล้ว แก่ผู้อื่นโดยพิสดาร เธอย่อมปล่อยให้วันคืนล่วงไป ละการหลีกออกเร้นอยู่ ไม่ประกอบความ สงบใจในภายใน เพราะการแสดงธรรมนั้น ภิกษุนี้เรียกว่าเป็นผู้มากด้วยการแสดงธรรม ไม่ชื่อ ว่าเป็นผู้อยู่ในธรรม ฯ

อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุย่อมกระทำการสาธยายธรรมตามที่ได้สดับมาแล้ว ตามที่ได้เรียน มาแล้ว โดยพิสดาร เธอย่อมปล่อยให้วันคืนล่วงไป ละการหลีกออกเร้นอยู่ ไม่ประกอบความ สงบใจในภายใน เพราะการสาธยายธรรมนั้น ภิกษุนี้เรียกว่า เป็นผู้มากด้วยการสาธยาย ไม่ชื่อ ว่าเป็นผู้อยู่ในธรรม ฯ

อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุย่อมตรึกตาม ตรองตาม เพ่งตามด้วยใจ ซึ่งธรรม ตามที่ได้ สดับมาแล้ว ตามที่ได้เรียนมาแล้ว เธอย่อมปล่อยให้วันคืนล่วงไปละการหลีกออกเร้นอยู่ ไม่

เล่ม ๒๒ · หน้า ๗๙ประกอบความสงบใจในภายใน เพราะการตรึกตามธรรมนั้น ภิกษุนี้เรียกว่า เป็นผู้มากด้วยการ ตรึกธรรม ไม่ชื่อว่าเป็นผู้อยู่ในธรรมภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ ย่อมเล่าเรียนธรรม คือ สุตตะ เคยยะ เวยยากรณะ คาถาอุทาน อิติวุตตกะ ชาดก อัพภูตธรรม เวทัลละ เธอย่อมไม่ปล่อย ให้วันคืนล่วงไป ไม่ละการหลีกออกเร้นอยู่ ประกอบความสงบใจในภายใน เพราะการเล่าเรียน ธรรมนั้น ภิกษุชื่อว่าเป็นผู้อยู่ในธรรมอย่างนี้แล ดูกรภิกษุ เราแสดงภิกษุผู้มากด้วยการเล่าเรียน ธรรม แสดงภิกษุผู้มากด้วยการแสดงธรรม แสดงภิกษุผู้มากด้วยการสาธยายธรรม แสดงภิกษุ ผู้มากด้วยการตรึกธรรม แสดงภิกษุผู้อยู่ในธรรม ด้วยประการฉะนี้ ดูกรภิกษุ กิจใดอันศาสดา ผู้หวังประโยชน์เกื้อกูลอนุเคราะห์ อาศัยความเอ็นดู พึงกระทำแก่สาวกทั้งหลาย กิจนั้นเราได้ ทำแก่เธอทั้งหลายแล้ว ดูกรภิกษุ นั่นโคนต้นไม้ นั่นเรือนว่าง เธอจงเพ่งฌาน อย่าประมาท อย่าเป็นผู้มีความเดือดร้อนในภายหลัง นี้เป็นอนุสาสนีของเราเพื่อเธอทั้งหลาย ฯ

    One Who Lives by the Teaching (1st)

  4. 1.1

    Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

    “‘dhammavihārī, dhammavihārī’ti, bhante, vuccati.

    “Sir, they speak of ‘one who lives by the teaching’.

  6. 1.3

    Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, bhikkhu dhammavihārī hotī”ti?

    How is a mendicant who lives by the teaching defined?”

    “Idha, bhikkhu, bhikkhu dhammaṁ pariyāpuṇāti—

    “Mendicant, take a mendicant who memorizes the teaching—

    suttaṁ, geyyaṁ, veyyākaraṇaṁ, gāthaṁ, udānaṁ, itivuttakaṁ, jātakaṁ, abbhutadhammaṁ, vedallaṁ.

    statements, mixed prose & verse, discussions, verses, inspired exclamations, legends, stories of past lives, amazing stories, and elaborations.

    So tāya dhammapariyattiyā divasaṁ atināmeti, riñcati paṭisallānaṁ, nānuyuñjati ajjhattaṁ cetosamathaṁ.

    They spend too much time studying that teaching. They neglect retreat, and are not committed to internal serenity of heart.

  10. 2.4

    Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhu: ‘bhikkhu pariyattibahulo, no dhammavihārī’.

    That mendicant is called one who studies a lot, not one who lives by the teaching.

  11. 3.1

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhu, bhikkhu yathāsutaṁ yathāpariyattaṁ dhammaṁ vitthārena paresaṁ deseti.

    Furthermore, a mendicant teaches Dhamma in detail to others as they learned and memorized it.

  12. 3.2

    So tāya dhammapaññattiyā divasaṁ atināmeti, riñcati paṭisallānaṁ, nānuyuñjati ajjhattaṁ cetosamathaṁ.

    They spend too much time advocating that teaching. They neglect retreat, and are not committed to internal serenity of heart.

  13. 3.3

    Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhu: ‘bhikkhu paññattibahulo, no dhammavihārī’.

    That mendicant is called one who advocates a lot, not one who lives by the teaching.

  14. 4.1

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhu, bhikkhu yathāsutaṁ yathāpariyattaṁ dhammaṁ vitthārena sajjhāyaṁ karoti.

    Furthermore, a mendicant rehearses the teaching in detail as they learned and memorized it.

  15. 4.2

    So tena sajjhāyena divasaṁ atināmeti, riñcati paṭisallānaṁ, nānuyuñjati ajjhattaṁ cetosamathaṁ.

    They spend too much time reciting that teaching. They neglect retreat, and are not committed to internal serenity of heart.

  16. 4.3

    Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhu: ‘bhikkhu sajjhāyabahulo, no dhammavihārī’.

    That mendicant is called one who rehearses a lot, not one who lives by the teaching.

  17. 5.1

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhu, bhikkhu yathāsutaṁ yathāpariyattaṁ dhammaṁ cetasā anuvitakketi anuvicāreti manasānupekkhati.

    Furthermore, a mendicant thinks about and considers the teaching in their heart, examining it with the mind as they learned and memorized it.

    So tehi dhammavitakkehi divasaṁ atināmeti, riñcati paṭisallānaṁ, nānuyuñjati ajjhattaṁ cetosamathaṁ.

    They spend too much time thinking about that teaching. They neglect retreat, and are not committed to internal serenity of heart.

  19. 5.3

    Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhu: ‘bhikkhu vitakkabahulo, no dhammavihārī’.

    That mendicant is called one who thinks a lot, not one who lives by the teaching.

  20. 6.1

    Idha, bhikkhu, bhikkhu dhammaṁ pariyāpuṇāti—

    Take a mendicant who memorizes the teaching—

    suttaṁ, geyyaṁ, veyyākaraṇaṁ, gāthaṁ, udānaṁ, itivuttakaṁ, jātakaṁ, abbhutadhammaṁ, vedallaṁ.

    They don’t spend too much time studying that teaching. They don’t neglect retreat, and they’re committed to internal serenity of heart.

  23. 6.4

    Evaṁ kho, bhikkhu, bhikkhu dhammavihārī hoti.

    That’s how a mendicant is one who lives by the teaching.

  24. 7.1

    Iti kho, bhikkhu, desito mayā pariyattibahulo, desito paññattibahulo, desito sajjhāyabahulo, desito vitakkabahulo, desito dhammavihārī.

    So, mendicant, I’ve taught you the one who studies a lot, the one who advocates a lot, the one who rehearses a lot, the one who thinks a lot, and the one who lives by the teaching.

  25. 7.2

    Yaṁ kho, bhikkhu, satthārā karaṇīyaṁ sāvakānaṁ hitesinā anukampakena anukampaṁ upādāya, kataṁ vo taṁ mayā.

    Out of sympathy, I’ve done what a teacher should do who wants what’s best for their disciples.

  26. 7.3

    Etāni, bhikkhu, rukkhamūlāni, etāni suññāgārāni. Jhāyatha, bhikkhu, mā pamādattha, mā pacchā vippaṭisārino ahuvattha. Ayaṁ vo amhākaṁ anusāsanī”ti.

    Here are these roots of trees, and here are these empty huts. Practice absorption, mendicant! Don’t be negligent! Don’t regret it later! This is my instruction to you.”
