Hirigāravasutta

The Buddha tells of hearing the seven principles of non-decline from a god.

ฉบับหลวงหิรีมาสูตร

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

ข้อ ๓๐ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อคืนนี้ เมื่อปฐมยามล่วงไปแล้ว เทวดาตนหนึ่งมีผิวพรรณ งาม ยังวิหารเชตวันทั้งสิ้นให้สว่างไสวแล้ว เข้ามาหาเราถึงที่อยู่ไหว้เราแล้วยืนอยู่ ณ ที่ควร ส่วนข้างหนึ่ง ครั้นแล้วได้กล่าวกะเราว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ธรรม ๗ ประการนี้ ย่อมเป็นไป เพื่อความไม่เสื่อมแก่ภิกษุ๗ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ ความเป็นผู้เคารพในพระศาสดา ๑ ความ เป็นผู้เคารพในธรรม ๑ ความเป็นผู้เคารพในสงฆ์ ๑ ความเป็นผู้เคารพในสิกขา ๑ ความเป็นผู้ เคารพในสมาธิ ๑ ความเป็นผู้เคารพในหิริ ๑ ความเป็นผู้เคารพในโอตตัปปะ ๑ ข้าแต่พระองค์ ผู้เจริญ ธรรม ๗ ประการนี้แล ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อความไม่เสื่อมแก่ภิกษุ เทวดานั้นครั้นกล่าวดังนี้ แล้ว ไหว้เรา กระทำประทักษิณแล้วหายไป ณ ที่นั้นเอง ฯ

ภิกษุผู้มีความเคารพในพระศาสดา มีความเคารพในธรรม

มีความเคารพอย่างแรงกล้าในสงฆ์ มีความเคารพในสมาธิ

มีความเพียร มีความเคารพอย่างแรงกล้าในสิกขา ถึงพร้อม

ด้วยหิริและโอตตัปปะ มีความเคารพ ยำเกรง เป็นผู้ไม่ควร

เพื่อความเสื่อม ย่อมมีในที่ใกล้นิพพานทีเดียว ฯ

    “Imaṁ, bhikkhave, rattiṁ aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yenāhaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā maṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho, bhikkhave, sā devatā maṁ etadavoca:

    “Mendicants, tonight, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, came to me, bowed, stood to one side, and said to me:

    ‘sattime, bhante, dhammā bhikkhuno aparihānāya saṁvattanti.

    ‘Sir, these seven things don’t lead to the decline of a mendicant.

    Katame satta?

    What seven?

  7. 1.4

    Satthugāravatā, dhammagāravatā, saṅghagāravatā, sikkhāgāravatā, samādhigāravatā, hirigāravatā, ottappagāravatā.

    Respect for the Teacher, for the teaching, for the Saṅgha, for the training, for immersion, for conscience, and for prudence.

    Ime kho, bhante, satta dhammā bhikkhuno aparihānāya saṁvattantī’ti.

    These seven things don’t lead to the decline of a mendicant.’

    Idamavoca, bhikkhave, sā devatā.

    That is what that deity said.

    Idaṁ vatvā maṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyīti.

    Then he bowed and respectfully circled me, keeping me on his right side, before vanishing right there.

    Satthugaru dhammagaru,

    One respectful of the Teacher and the teaching,

    saṅghe ca tibbagāravo;

    keenly respecting the Saṅgha;

  13. 2.3

    Samādhigaru ātāpī,

    respecting immersion, being energetic,

  14. 2.4

    sikkhāya tibbagāravo.

    and keenly respecting the training;

  15. 3.1

    Hiriottappasampanno,

    endowed with conscience and prudence,

  16. 3.2

    sappatisso sagāravo;

    reverential and respectful—

    Abhabbo parihānāya,

    it is impossible for them to decline;

  18. 3.4

    nibbānasseva santike”ti.

    they have drawn near to extinguishment.”
