ฉบับหลวงอิสสรสูตรที่ ๗

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

เทวดาทูลถามว่า อะไรหนอเป็นใหญ่ในโลก อะไรหนอเป็นสูงสุดแห่งภัณฑะทั้งหลาย อะไรหนอเป็นดังสนิมศัสตราในโลก อะไรหนอเป็นเสนียดในโลก ใครหนอนำของไปอยู่ย่อมถูกห้ามแต่ใครนำไปกลับเป็นที่รัก ใครหนอมาหาบ่อยๆ บัณฑิตย่อมยินดีต้อนรับ ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสตอบว่า อำนาจเป็นใหญ่ในโลก หญิงเป็นสูงสุดแห่งภัณฑะทั้งหลาย ความโกรธเป็นดังสนิมศัสตราในโลก พวกโจรเป็นเสนียดในโลก โจรนำของไปอยู่ย่อมถูกห้ามแต่สมณะนำไปกลับเป็นที่รัก สมณะมาหาบ่อยๆ บัณฑิตย่อมยินดีต้อนรับ ฯ

    “What is authority in the world?

    kiṁsu bhaṇḍānamuttamaṁ;

    What’s the best of valuables?

    Kiṁsu satthamalaṁ loke,

    What in the world is a rusty sword?

    kiṁsu lokasmimabbudaṁ.

    Who is a pest in the world?

    Kiṁsu harantaṁ vārenti,

    Who gets arrested when they take things away?

  9. 2.2

    haranto pana ko piyo;

    And who is loved when they take things away?

  10. 2.3

    Kiṁsu punappunāyantaṁ,

    And who is approved by the astute

  11. 2.4

    abhinandanti paṇḍitā”ti.

    when they come again and again?”

    “Vaso issariyaṁ loke,

    “Sway is authority in the world.

    itthī bhaṇḍānamuttamaṁ;

    A woman is the best of valuables.

    Kodho satthamalaṁ loke,

    Anger in the world is a rusty sword.

    corā lokasmimabbudā.

    A bandit is a pest in the world.

    Coraṁ harantaṁ vārenti,

    A bandit gets arrested when they take things away.

  17. 4.2

    haranto samaṇo piyo;

    And an ascetic is loved when they take things away.

  18. 4.3

    Samaṇaṁ punappunāyantaṁ,

    An ascetic is approved by the astute

    abhinandanti paṇḍitā”ti.
