Sānusutta
It seems that the novice Sānu had returned to his home intending to disrobe. To prevent him, a spirit possessed him, encouraging him to pursue the path of good. Sānu’s mother, weeping for her son, also tries to make him stay in robes.

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ในพระวิหารเชตวัน อารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตเมืองสาวัตถี ฯ
สมัยนั้นแล บุตรของอุบาสิกาคนหนึ่งชื่อสานุ ถูกยักษ์เข้าสิง ฯ
ข้อ ๘๑๕ครั้งนั้นแล อุบาสิกานั้นได้ปริเวทนาการกล่าวคาถาเหล่านี้ในเวลานั้น ว่าฉันได้สดับต่อพระอรหันต์ทั้งหลายว่า ชนเหล่าใดเข้าอยู่อุโบสถอันประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘ ประการด้วยดี ตลอดดิถีที่ ๑๔ ที่ ๑๕ และที่ ๘ แห่งปักษ์ ทั้งตลอดปาริหาริกปักษ์ ประพฤติพรหมจรรย์อยู่ ยักษ์ทั้งหลายย่อมไม่เล่นกับชนเหล่านั้นบัดนี้ ฉันเห็นในวันนี้ ยักษ์เล่นกับสามเณรสานุ ฯ
ยักษ์กล่าวว่า ท่านได้สดับต่อพระอรหันต์ทั้งหลายว่า ชนเหล่าใดเข้าอยู่อุโบสถอันประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘ ประการ ตลอดดิถีที่ ๑๔ ที่ ๑๕ และที่ ๘ แห่งปักษ์ ทั้งตลอดปาริหาริกปักษ์ ประพฤติพรหมจรรย์อยู่ ยักษ์ทั้งหลายย่อมไม่เล่นกับชนเหล่านั้นเป็นการชอบ ท่านพึงบอกสานุผู้ฟื้นขึ้นแล้วว่า ยักษ์สั่งคำนี้ไว้ว่า ท่านอย่าได้กระทำกรรมอันลามกทั้งในที่แจ้งและที่ลับ ถ้าท่านจักกระทำหรือกำลังกระทำกรรมอันลามกไซร้ ถึงท่านจะเหาะหนีไปก็ไม่พ้นจากทุกข์ ฯ
สามเณรสานุฟื้นขึ้นแล้วกล่าวว่า โยม ญาติและมิตรทั้งหลายย่อมร้องไห้ถึงคนที่ตายแล้วหรือยังเป็นอยู่แต่หายไป โยมยังเห็นฉันเป็นอยู่ ไฉนเหตุไรโยมจึงร้องไห้ถึงฉัน ฯ
ข้อ ๘๑๘อุบาสิกากล่าวว่า ลูกเอ๋ย ญาติและมิตรทั้งหลายย่อมร้องไห้ถึงคนที่ตายแล้วหรือยังเป็นอยู่แต่หายไป แต่คนใดละกามทั้งหลายแล้วจะกลับมาในกามนี้อีก ลูกรัก ญาติและมิตรทั้งหลายย่อมร้องไห้ถึงคนนั้น เพราะเขาเป็นอยู่ต่อไปอีกก็เหมือนตายแล้ว แน่พ่อ เรายกท่านขึ้นจากเถ้ารึงที่ยังร้อนระอุแล้ว ท่านอยากจะตกลงไปสู่เถ้ารึงอีก แน่พ่อ เรายกท่านขึ้นจากเหวแล้ว ท่านอยากจะตกลงไปสู่เหวอีก เราจะโพนทะนาแก่ใครเล่าว่า ขอท่านจงช่วยกัน ขอความเจริญจงมีแก่ท่าน ประดุจสิ่งของที่ขนออกแล้วจากเรือนที่ไฟไหม้ แต่ท่านอยากจะเผามันเสียอีก ฯ

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

Tena kho pana samayena aññatarissā upāsikāya sānu nāma putto yakkhena gahito hoti.
Now at that time a certain lay woman had a son named Sānu who had been seized by a native spirit.
- 1.3
Atha kho sā upāsikā paridevamānā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
And as that lay woman wept, on that occasion she recited these verses:

“Cātuddasiṁ pañcadasiṁ,
“I have heard this from the perfected ones.
- 2.2
yā ca pakkhassa aṭṭhamī;
The native spirits will not mess with anyone
- 2.3
Pāṭihāriyapakkhañca,
who leads the spiritual life
- 2.4
aṭṭhaṅgasusamāgataṁ.
by observing the sabbath
- 3.1
Uposathaṁ upavasanti,
complete in all eight factors
- 3.2
brahmacariyaṁ caranti ye;
on the fourteenth and the fifteenth days,
- 3.3
Na tehi yakkhā kīḷanti,
and the eighth day of the fortnight,
- 3.4
iti me arahataṁ sutaṁ;
as well as on the fortnight of special displays.

Sā dāni ajja passāmi,
But now today I see
- 3.6
yakkhā kīḷanti sānunā”ti.

Mākāsi pāpakaṁ kammaṁ,
Don’t do bad deeds
- 6.4
āvi vā yadi vā raho.
either openly or in secret.

Sace ca pāpakaṁ kammaṁ,
If you should do a bad deed,
- 7.2
karissasi karosi vā;
or you’re doing one now,
- 7.3
Na te dukkhā pamutyatthi,
you won’t be freed from suffering,
- 7.4
uppaccāpi palāyato”ti.
though you fly away and flee.”
- 8.1
“Mataṁ vā amma rodanti,
“Mum, they cry for the dead,
- 8.2
yo vā jīvaṁ na dissati;
or for one who’s alive but missing.
- 8.3
Jīvantaṁ amma passantī,
I’m alive and you can see me,
- 8.4
kasmā maṁ amma rodasī”ti.
so mum, why do you weep for me?”

“Mataṁ vā putta rodanti,
“Son, they cry for the dead,
- 9.2
yo vā jīvaṁ na dissati;
or for one who’s alive but missing.
- 9.3
Yo ca kāme cajitvāna,
But someone who has given up sensual pleasures
- 9.4
punarāgacchate idha;
only to come back here again:
- 9.5
Taṁ vāpi putta rodanti,
they cry for them as well,
- 9.6
puna jīvaṁ mato hi so.
for though still alive they’re really dead.
- 10.1
Kukkuḷā ubbhato tāta,
My dear, you’ve been rescued from hot coals,
- 10.2
kukkuḷaṁ patitumicchasi;
and you want to plunge right back in them!
- 10.3
Narakā ubbhato tāta,
My dear, you’ve been rescued from the abyss,
- 10.4
narakaṁ patitumicchasi.
and you want to plunge right back there!
- 11.1
Abhidhāvatha bhaddante,
Hurry up, good luck to you!
- 11.2
kassa ujjhāpayāmase;
To whom should we complain?
- 11.3
Ādittā nīhataṁ bhaṇḍaṁ,
A valuable saved from a fire,
- 11.4
puna ḍayhitumicchasī”ti.
you want to burn again!”
