Dutiyakoṭṭhikasutta
Mahākoṭṭhita explains to Sāriputta that ignorance is not understanding the aggregates in terms of arising and ceasing, gratification, drawback, and escape, while knowledge is understanding the aggregates.

พระนครพาราณสี ท่านพระสารีบุตรนั่ง ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่งแล้ว ได้ถามท่าน พระมหาโกฏฐิตะว่า ดูกรท่านโกฏฐิตะ ที่เรียกว่า อวิชชา อวิชชา ดังนี้ อวิชชาเป็นไฉนหนอแล และบุคคลเป็นผู้ประกอบด้วยอวิชชา ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่าไร? ท่านพระมหาโกฏฐิตะตอบว่า ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุ ปุถุชนผู้ไม่ได้สดับแล้วในโลกนี้ ย่อมไม่รู้ชัดตามความเป็นจริงซึ่งความเกิด ความดับ คุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งรูป ย่อมไม่รู้ชัดตามความเป็นจริงซึ่งความเกิด ความดับ คุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งเวทนา … แห่งสัญญา … แห่งสังขาร … แห่งวิญญาณ. ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุ นี้เรียกว่า อวิชชา และบุคคลเป็นผู้ประกอบด้วยอวิชชา ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้แล.
เมื่อท่านพระมหาโกฏฐิตะกล่าวอย่างนี้แล้ว ท่านพระสารีบุตรจึงได้ถามว่า ดูกรท่านโกฏฐิตะ ที่เรียกว่า วิชชา วิชชา ดังนี้ วิชชาเป็นไฉนหนอแล และบุคคลเป็นผู้ประกอบด้วยวิชชา ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่าไร? ท่านพระมหาโกฏฐิตะตอบว่า ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุ อริยสาวกผู้ได้สดับแล้วในธรรมวินัยนี้ ย่อมรู้ชัดตามความเป็นจริงซึ่งความเกิด ความดับ คุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งรูป ย่อมรู้ชัดตามความเป็นจริงซึ่งความเกิด ความดับ คุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งเวทนา … แห่งสัญญา … แห่งสังขาร … แห่งวิญญาณ. ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุ นี้เรียกว่า วิชชา และบุคคลเป็นผู้ประกอบด้วยวิชชา ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้แล.

“Idhāvuso, assutavā puthujjano rūpassa samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti.
“Reverend, an unlearned ordinary person doesn’t truly understand the origin, the disappearance, the gratification, the drawback, and the escape when it comes to form,
