Ajjhattānattahetusutta
Since the causes of the six interior sense fields are not-self, how can the senses be self?
ฉบับหลวงเหตุอัชฌัตตสูตรที ๑
ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย จักษุเป็นของไม่เที่ยง แม้เหตุและปัจจัยเพื่อความเกิดขึ้นแห่งจักษุนั้นก็ไม่เที่ยง จักษุอันเกิดแต่เหตุที่ไม่เที่ยง ที่ไหนจักเที่ยงเล่า ฯลฯ ใจเป็นของไม่เที่ยง แม้เหตุและปัจจัยเพื่อความเกิดขึ้นแห่งใจนั้นก็ไม่เที่ยง ใจอันเกิดแต่เหตุที่ไม่เที่ยง ที่ไหนจักเที่ยงเล่า
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสาวกผู้สดับแล้ว เห็นอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในจักษุ แม้ในหู แม้ในจมูก แม้ในลิ้น แม้ในกาย แม้ในใจ เมื่อเบื่อหน่าย ย่อมคลายกำหนัด เพราะคลายกำหนัด จึงหลุดพ้น เมื่อหลุดพ้นแล้ว ย่อมมีญาณหยั่งรู้ว่า หลุดพ้นแล้ว รู้ชัดว่า ชาติสิ้นแล้ว พรหมจรรย์อยู่จบแล้ว กิจที่ควรทำ ทำเสร็จแล้ว กิจอื่นเพื่อความเป็นอย่างนี้มิได้มี ฯ

“Mendicants, the eye is not-self.

Yopi hetu, yopi paccayo cakkhussa uppādāya, sopi anattā.
The cause and reason that gives rise to the eye is also not-self.

Since the eye is produced by what is not-self, how could it be self?
