SN 4.23

Godhikasutta

Venerable Godhika finds himself repeatedly falling away from his meditation attainments due to severe illness. Eventually he considers suicide, and Māra tries to get the Buddha to deter him. But the Buddha says Godhika has already attained awakening and has died blamelessly.

ข้อ ๔๘๘ข้าพเจ้าได้สดับมาแล้วอย่างนี้

สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระวิหารเวฬุวัน อันเป็นสถานที่พระราชทานเหยื่อแก่กระแต เขตกรุงราชคฤห์ ฯ

ก็สมัยนั้นแล ท่านโคธิกะอยู่ที่กาลศิลาข้างภูเขาอิสิคิลิ ฯ

ข้อ ๔๘๙ครั้งนั้นแล ท่านโคธิกะเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีจิตมั่นคงอยู่ได้ บรรลุเจโตวิมุติอันเป็นโลกีย์ ภายหลังท่านโคธิกะได้เสื่อมจากเจโตวิมุติอันเป็นโลกีย์นั้น แม้ครั้งที่ ๒ ท่านโคธิกะเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีจิตมั่นคงอยู่ ได้บรรลุเจโตวิมุติอันเป็นโลกีย์ แม้ในครั้งที่ ๒ ก็ได้เสื่อมจากเจโตวิมุติอันเป็นโลกีย์นั้น แม้ครั้งที่ ๓ ท่านโคธิกะเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีจิตมั่นคงอยู่ ได้บรรลุเจโตวิมุติอันเป็นโลกีย์ แม้ในครั้งที่ ๓ ก็ได้เสื่อมจากเจโตวิมุติอันเป็นโลกีย์นั้น แม้ครั้งที่ ๔ ท่านโคธิกะเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีจิตมั่นคงอยู่ ได้บรรลุเจโตวิมุติอันเป็นโลกีย์ แม้ในครั้งที่ ๔ ก็ได้เสื่อมจากเจโตวิมุติอันเป็นโลกีย์นั้น แม้ครั้งที่ ๕ ท่านโคธิกะเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีจิตมั่นคงอยู่ ได้บรรลุเจโตวิมุติอันเป็นโลกีย์ แม้ในครั้งที่ ๕ ก็ได้เสื่อมจากเจโตวิมุติอันเป็นโลกีย์นั้น แม้ครั้งที่ ๖ ท่านโคธิกะ เป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีจิตมั่นคงอยู่ ได้บรรลุเจโตวิมุติอันเป็นโลกีย์ แม้ในครั้งที่ ๖ ก็ได้เสื่อมจากเจโตวิมุติอันเป็นโลกีย์นั้น แม้ครั้งที่ ๗ ท่านโคธิกะเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีจิตมั่นคงอยู่ ก็ได้บรรลุเจโตวิมุติอันเป็นโลกีย์อีก ฯ

ครั้งนั้นแล ท่านโคธิกะได้เกิดความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า เราได้เสื่อมจากเจโตวิมุติอันเป็นโลกีย์ถึง ๖ ครั้งแล้ว ถ้ากระไรเราพึงนำศัสตรามา ฯ

ข้อ ๔๙๐ลำดับนั้นแล มารผู้มีบาปทราบความปริวิตกแห่งจิตของท่านโคธิกะด้วยจิตแล้ว จึงเข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ครั้นแล้ว ได้กราบทูลพระผู้มีพระภาคด้วยคาถาว่า

เล่ม ๑๕ · หน้า ๑๕๐ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้มีจักษุ มีเพียรใหญ่ มีปัญญามาก รุ่งเรืองด้วยฤทธิ์และยศ ก้าวล่วงเวรและภัยทั้งปวง ข้าพระองค์ขอถวายบังคมพระบาททั้งคู่ ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้มีเพียรใหญ่ สาวกของพระองค์อันมรณะครอบงำแล้ว ย่อมคิดจำนงหวังความตาย ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้ทรงไว้ซึ่งความรุ่งเรือง ขอพระองค์จงห้ามสาวกของพระองค์นั้นเสียเถิด ฯ ข้าแต่พระผู้มีพระภาคผู้ปรากฏในหมู่ชน สาวกของพระองค์ยินดีในพระศาสนา ยังไม่ได้บรรลุพระอรหันต์อันตัดเสียซึ่งมานะ ยังเป็นพระเสขะอยู่ ไฉนจะพึงกระทำกาลเสียเล่า ฯ ก็เวลานั้น ท่านโคธิกะได้นำศัสตรามาแล้ว ฯ

ข้อ ๔๙๑ครั้งนั้น พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงทราบว่า ผู้นี้เป็นมารผู้มีบาป จึงได้ตรัสกะมารผู้มีบาปด้วยพระคาถาว่า ปราชญ์ทั้งหลายย่อมทำอย่างนี้แล ย่อมไม่ห่วงใยชีวิต โคธิกะภิกษุถอนตัณหาพร้อมด้วยราก นิพพานแล้ว ฯ

ข้อ ๔๙๒ครั้งนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายมาแล้วตรัส ว่า ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรามาไปสู่กาลศิลาข้างภูเขาอิสิคิลิ อันเป็นที่โคธิกกุลบุตร นำศัสตรามาแล้ว ฯ

ภิกษุเหล่านั้น กราบทูลรับพระดำรัสของพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้ว ฯ

ครั้งนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคพร้อมด้วยภิกษุหลายรูปได้เข้าไปยังกาลศิลาข้างภูเขาอิสิคิลิ ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ทอดพระเนตรเห็นโคธิกะมีคออันพลิกแล้ว นอนอยู่บนเตียงที่ไกลเทียว ก็เวลานั้นแล ควันหรือหมอกพลุ่งไปสู่ทิศตะวันออก ทิศตะวันตก ทิศเหนือ ทิศใต้ ทิศเบื้องบน ทิศเบื้องต่ำ และอนุทิศ ฯ

ข้อ ๔๙๓ครั้งนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอเห็นไหม ควันหรือหมอกนั้นพลุ่งไปสู่ทิศตะวันออก ทิศตะวันตก ทิศเหนือ ทิศใต้ ทิศเบื้องบน ทิศเบื้องต่ำ และอนุทิศ เมื่อภิกษุเหล่านั้นกราบทูลรับพระดำรัสแล้วจึงตรัสว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย นั่นมารผู้มีบาปเที่ยวแสวงหาวิญญาณของโคธิกกุลบุตร ด้วยคิดว่า วิญญาณของโคธิกกุลบุตรตั้งอยู่ ณ ที่ไหน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย โคธิกกุลบุตรมีวิญญาณอันไม่ตั้งอยู่แล้ว ปรินิพพานแล้ว ฯ

เล่ม ๑๕ · หน้า ๑๕๑ครั้งนั้นแล มารผู้มีบาปถือพิณมีสีเหลืองเหมือนมะตูมสุก เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ครั้นแล้ว ได้ทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาคด้วยคาถาว่า ข้าพระองค์ได้ค้นหาวิญญาณของโคธิกกุลบุตร ทั้งในทิศเบื้องบน ทั้งทิศเบื้องต่ำ ทั้งทางขวาง ทั้งทิศใหญ่ ทิศน้อยทั่วแล้วมิได้ประสบ โคธิกะนั้นไป ณ ที่ไหน ฯ

ข้อ ๔๙๕พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสตอบว่า นักปราชญ์ผู้ใดสมบูรณ์ด้วยธิติ มีปรกติเพ่งพินิจ ยินดีแล้วในฌานทุกเมื่อ พากเพียรอยู่ตลอดวันและคืน ไม่มีความอาลัยในชีวิต ชนะเสนาของมัจจุราชแล้ว ไม่กลับมาสู่ภพใหม่ นักปราชญ์นั้นคือโคธิกกุลบุตร ได้ถอนตัณหาพร้อมด้วยราก ปรินิพพานแล้ว ฯ

พิณได้พลัดตกจากรักแร้ของมารผู้มีความเศร้าโศก ในลำดับนั้น ยักษ์นั้นมีความโทมนัส หายไปในที่นั้นนั่นเอง ฯ

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

    So I have heard.

    ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.

    Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā godhiko isigilipasse viharati kāḷasilāyaṁ.

    Now at that time Venerable Godhika was staying on the slopes of Isigili at the Black Rock.

    Atha kho āyasmā godhiko appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto sāmayikaṁ cetovimuttiṁ phusi.

    Then Venerable Godhika, meditating diligent, keen, and resolute, experienced temporary freedom of heart.

    Atha kho āyasmā godhiko tamhā sāmayikāya cetovimuttiyā parihāyi.

    But then he fell away from that temporary freedom of heart.

    For a seventh time Godhika, meditating diligent, keen, and resolute, experienced temporary freedom of heart.

    Atha kho āyasmato godhikassa etadahosi:

    Then he thought,

    “yāva chaṭṭhaṁ khvāhaṁ sāmayikāya cetovimuttiyā parihīno.

    “I’ve fallen away from this temporary freedom of heart no less than six times.

  22. 2.3

    Yannūnāhaṁ satthaṁ āhareyyan”ti.

    Why don’t I commit suicide?”

  23. 2.4

    Atha kho māro pāpimā āyasmato godhikassa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:

    And then Māra the Wicked, knowing Godhika’s train of thought, went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse:

    “Mahāvīra mahāpañña,

    “O great hero, O greatly wise!

  25. 3.2

    iddhiyā yasasā jala;

    Shining with power and glory.

  26. 3.3

    Sabbaverabhayātīta,

    You’ve gone beyond all enmities and fears,

  27. 3.4

    pāde vandāmi cakkhuma.

    I bow to your feet, O Clear-eyed One!

  28. 4.1

    Sāvako te mahāvīra,

    Great hero, master of death,

  29. 4.2

    maraṇaṁ maraṇābhibhū;

    your disciple longs for death,

  30. 4.3

    Ākaṅkhati cetayati,

    he’s planning for it.

  31. 4.4

    taṁ nisedha jutindhara.

    Stop him, O light-bringer!

  32. 5.1

    Kathañhi bhagavā tuyhaṁ,

    For Blessed One, renowned among men,

  33. 5.2

    Sāvako sāsane rato;

    your disciple who loves your teaching,

  34. 5.3

    Appattamānaso sekkho,

    a trainee who hasn’t achieved their heart’s desire—

  35. 5.4

    Kālaṁ kayirā janesutā”ti.

    how can they kill themselves?”

  36. 6.1

    Tena kho pana samayena āyasmatā godhikena satthaṁ āharitaṁ hoti.

    Now at that time Venerable Godhika had already committed suicide.

  37. 6.2

    Atha kho bhagavā “māro ayaṁ pāpimā” iti viditvā māraṁ pāpimantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    Then the Buddha, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, addressed him in verse:

    “Evañhi dhīrā kubbanti,

    “This is how the attentive act,

  39. 7.2

    nāvakaṅkhanti jīvitaṁ;

    for they don’t long for life.

  40. 7.3

    Samūlaṁ taṇhamabbuyha,

    Having plucked out craving, root and all,

  41. 7.4

    godhiko parinibbuto”ti.

    Godhika is quenched.”

  42. 8.1

    Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

    Then the Buddha said to the mendicants,

  43. 8.2

    “āyāma, bhikkhave, yena isigilipassaṁ kāḷasilā tenupasaṅkamissāma yattha godhikena kulaputtena satthaṁ āharitan”ti.

    “Come, mendicants, let’s go to the Black Rock on the slopes of Isigili where Godhika, who came from a good family, committed suicide.”

  44. 8.3

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

    “Yes, sir,” they replied.

  45. 9.1

    Atha kho bhagavā sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ yena isigilipassaṁ kāḷasilā tenupasaṅkami.

    Then the Buddha together with several mendicants went to the Black Rock on the slopes of Isigili.

  46. 9.2

    Addasā kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ godhikaṁ dūratova mañcake vivattakkhandhaṁ semānaṁ.

    The Buddha saw Godhika off in the distance on his cot, lying with aggregates cast off.

  47. 9.3

    Tena kho pana samayena dhūmāyitattaṁ timirāyitattaṁ gacchateva purimaṁ disaṁ, gacchati pacchimaṁ disaṁ, gacchati uttaraṁ disaṁ, gacchati dakkhiṇaṁ disaṁ, gacchati uddhaṁ, gacchati adho, gacchati anudisaṁ.

    Now at that time a cloud of black smoke was moving east, west, north, south, above, below, and in-between.

    Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

    Then the Buddha said to the mendicants,

    “passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etaṁ dhūmāyitattaṁ timirāyitattaṁ gacchateva purimaṁ disaṁ, gacchati pacchimaṁ disaṁ, gacchati uttaraṁ disaṁ, gacchati dakkhiṇaṁ disaṁ, gacchati uddhaṁ, gacchati adho, gacchati anudisan”ti?

    “Mendicants, do you see that cloud of black smoke moving east, west, north, south, above, below, and in-between?”

    “Evaṁ, bhante”.

    “Yes, sir.”

  51. 10.4

    “Eso kho, bhikkhave, māro pāpimā godhikassa kulaputtassa viññāṇaṁ samanvesati:

    “That’s Māra the Wicked searching for Godhika’s consciousness, wondering:

    ‘kattha godhikassa kulaputtassa viññāṇaṁ patiṭṭhitan’ti?

    ‘Where is Godhika’s consciousness established?’

  53. 10.6

    Appatiṭṭhitena ca, bhikkhave, viññāṇena godhiko kulaputto parinibbuto”ti.

    But since his consciousness is not established, Godhika is quenched.”

  54. 10.7

    Atha kho māro pāpimā beluvapaṇḍuvīṇaṁ ādāya yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    Then Māra, carrying his arched harp made from the pale timber of wood-apple, went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse:

    “Uddhaṁ adho ca tiriyaṁ,

    “Above, below, all round,

  56. 11.2

    disā anudisā svahaṁ;

    in the four quarters and in-between,

  57. 11.3

    Anvesaṁ nādhigacchāmi,

    I’ve been searching without success:

  58. 11.4

    godhiko so kuhiṁ gato”ti.

    where has that Godhika got to?”

  59. 12.1

    “Yo dhīro dhitisampanno,

    “He was an attentive and steadfast sage,

  60. 12.2

    jhāyī jhānarato sadā;

    a meditator who loved absorption.

  61. 12.3

    Ahorattaṁ anuyuñjaṁ,

    By day and by night he applied himself,

  62. 12.4

    jīvitaṁ anikāmayaṁ.

    without concern for his life.

  63. 13.1

    Jetvāna maccuno senaṁ,

    He defeated the army of death,

  64. 13.2

    anāgantvā punabbhavaṁ;

    and won’t return for any future life.

  65. 13.3

    Samūlaṁ taṇhamabbuyha,

    Having plucked out craving, root and all

  66. 13.4

    godhiko parinibbuto”ti.

    Godhika is quenched.”

    Tassa sokaparetassa,

    So stricken with sorrow

    vīṇā kacchā abhassatha;

    that his harp dropped from his armpit,

    Tato so dummano yakkho,

    that spirit, downcast,

    tatthevantaradhāyathāti.

    vanished right there.
