SN 45.18

Paṭhamakukkuṭārāmasutta

In a short discourse evidently set shortly after the Buddha’s passing, Venerable Bhadda asks Ānanda about the unholy life, or the unspiritual path. It is the wrong eightfold path.

ฉบับหลวงกุกกุฏารามสูตรที่ ๑ · มิจฉามรรค ว่าด้วยอพรหมจรรย์

ข้าพเจ้าได้สดับแล้วอย่างนี้:

สมัยหนึ่ง ท่านพระอานนท์และท่านพระภัททะอยู่ ณ กุกกุฏาราม ใกล้นครปาฏลีบุตร ครั้งนั้น ท่านพระภัททะออกจากที่เร้นในเวลาเย็น เข้าไปหาท่านพระอานนท์ ได้ปราศรัยกับท่าน พระอานนท์ ครั้นผ่านการปราศรัยพอให้ระลึกถึงกันแล้ว จึงนั่ง ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่ง ครั้นแล้วได้ถามท่านพระอานนท์ว่า ท่านอานนท์ ที่เรียกว่า อพรหมจรรย์ๆ ดังนี้ อพรหมจรรย์เป็นไฉนหนอ? ท่านพระอานนท์ตอบว่า ดีละๆ ท่านภัททะ ท่านช่างคิด ช่างหลักแหลม ช่างไต่ถาม ก็ท่านถามอย่างนี้หรือว่า ท่านอานนท์ ที่เรียกว่า อพรหมจรรย์ๆ ดังนี้ อพรหมจรรย์เป็นไฉนหนอ?

ภ. อย่างนั้น ท่านผู้มีอายุ?

อา. มิจฉามรรคอันประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘ คือ มิจฉาทิฏฐิ ฯลฯ มิจฉาสมาธิ นี้แลเป็นอพรหมจรรย์.

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

    So I have heard.

    ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā ca ānando āyasmā ca bhaddo pāṭaliputte viharanti kukkuṭārāme.

    At one time the venerables Ānanda and Bhadda were staying near Pāṭaliputta, in the Chicken Monastery.

    Atha kho āyasmā bhaddo sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā ānandena saddhiṁ sammodi.

    Then in the late afternoon, Venerable Bhadda came out of retreat, went to Venerable Ānanda, and exchanged greetings with him.

    Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā bhaddo āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ etadavoca:

    When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Ānanda:

    “‘Abrahmacariyaṁ, abrahmacariyan’ti, āvuso ānanda, vuccati.

    “Reverend, they speak of this thing called ‘not the spiritual path’.

    Katamaṁ nu kho, āvuso, abrahmacariyan”ti?

    What is not the spiritual path?”

    “Sādhu sādhu, āvuso bhadda.

    “Good, good, Reverend Bhadda!

    Bhaddako kho te, āvuso bhadda, ummaṅgo, bhaddakaṁ paṭibhānaṁ, kalyāṇī paripucchā.

    Your approach and eloquence are excellent, and it’s a good question.

    “Yes, reverend.”

    “Ayameva kho, āvuso, aṭṭhaṅgiko micchāmaggo abrahmacariyaṁ, seyyathidaṁ—

    “What is not the spiritual path is simply the wrong eightfold path, that is:

    wrong view, wrong purpose, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, and wrong immersion.”
