Khandhasutta
The four noble truths are defined, with the five aggregates under the truth of suffering.
ฉบับหลวงขันธสูตร · ว่าด้วยอริยสัจ ๔
ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสัจ ๔ เหล่านี้ อริยสัจ ๔ เป็นไฉน? คือ ทุกขอริยสัจ ทุกขสมุทัยอริยสัจ ทุกขนิโรธอริยสัจ ทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทาอริยสัจ.
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ทุกขอริยสัจเป็นไฉน? ควรจะกล่าวได้ว่า อุปาทานขันธ์ ๕ อุปาทานขันธ์ ๕ เป็นไฉน? ได้แก่ อุปาทานขันธ์คือรูป อุปาทานขันธ์คือเวทนา อุปาทานขันธ์คือสัญญา อุปาทานขันธ์คือสังขาร อุปาทานขันธ์คือวิญญาณ นี้เรียกว่าทุกขอริยสัจ.
ก็ทุกขสมุทยอริยสัจเป็นไฉน? ตัณหาอันทำให้มีภพใหม่ ประกอบด้วยความกำหนัด ด้วยอำนาจความพอใจ เพลิดเพลินยิ่งนักในอารมณ์นั้นๆ ได้แก่ กามตัณหา ภวตัณหา วิภวตัณหา นี้เรียกว่า ทุกขสมุทยอริยสัจ.
ก็ทุกขนิโรธอริยสัจเป็นไฉน? ความดับด้วยการสำรอกโดยไม่เหลือแห่งตัณหานั้นแหละ ความสละ ความวาง ความปล่อย ความไม่อาลัยตัณหานั้น นี้เรียกว่า ทุกขนิโรธอริยสัจ.
ก็ทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทาอริยสัจเป็นไฉน? อริยมรรคอันประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘ นี้แหละ คือ สัมมาทิฏฐิ ฯลฯ สัมมาสมาธิ นี้เรียกว่า ทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทาอริยสัจ.
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสัจ ๔ เหล่านี้แล เพราะเหตุนั้นแหละ เธอทั้งหลายพึงกระทำความเพียรเพื่อรู้ตามความเป็นจริงว่า นี้ทุกข์ ฯลฯ นี้ทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทา.

“Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, ariyasaccāni.
“Mendicants, there are these four noble truths.

Katamāni cattāri?
What four?
- 1.3
Dukkhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ, dukkhasamudayaṁ ariyasaccaṁ, dukkhanirodhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā ariyasaccaṁ.
The noble truths of suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, dukkhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ?
And what is the noble truth of suffering?
- 2.2
‘Pañcupādānakkhandhā’ tissa vacanīyaṁ, seyyathidaṁ—
You should say: ‘The five grasping aggregates’.
- 2.3
rūpupādānakkhandho …pe… viññāṇupādānakkhandho.
That is: form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness.
- 2.4
Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, dukkhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ.
This is called the noble truth of suffering.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, dukkhasamudayaṁ ariyasaccaṁ?
And what is the noble truth of the origin of suffering?
- 3.2
Yāyaṁ taṇhā ponobbhavikā nandirāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinī, seyyathidaṁ—
It’s the craving that leads to future lives, mixed up with relishing and greed, taking pleasure there wherever it alights. That is,
- 3.3
kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā.
craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, and craving for nonexistence.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, dukkhasamudayaṁ ariyasaccaṁ.
This is called the noble truth of the origin of suffering.
- 4.1
Katamañca, bhikkhave, dukkhanirodhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ?
And what is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering?
- 4.2
Yo tassāyeva taṇhāya asesavirāganirodho cāgo paṭinissaggo mutti anālayo—
It’s the fading away and cessation of that very same craving no residue left behind; giving it away, letting it go, releasing it, and not clinging to it.
- 4.3
idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, dukkhanirodhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ.
This is called the noble truth of the cessation of suffering.
- 5.1
Katamañca, bhikkhave, dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā ariyasaccaṁ?
And what is the noble truth of the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering?
- 5.2
Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṁ—
It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi—
right view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.
- 5.4
idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā ariyasaccaṁ.
This is called the noble truth of the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering.
- 5.5
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri ariyasaccāni.
These are the four noble truths.
- 6.1
Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyo”ti.
That’s why you should practice meditation to understand: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’.”
