Aruṇavatīsutta

The Buddha tells a story of the past Buddha Sikhī and his disciple Abhibhū. They visit a brahmā realm where they perform many astounding feats and give teachings.

สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ในพระวิหารเชตวัน อารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตกรุงสาวัตถี ฯ

ในที่นั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุเหล่านั้นทูลรับพระดำรัสของพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้ว ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสคำนี้ว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรื่องเคยมีมาแล้ว มีพระราชาพระนามว่า “อรุณวา” ราชธานีของพระเจ้าอรุณวามีนามว่า “อรุณวตี” พระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธพระนามว่าสิขี ทรงเข้าไปอาศัยราชธานีอรุณวตีประทับอยู่ ฯ

ก็พระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธพระนามว่าสิขี ได้มีคู่พระสาวกนามว่า พระอภิภูและพระสัมภวะ เป็นคู่พระสาวกที่เจริญเลิศ ฯ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ครั้งนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าพระนามว่าสิขี ตรัสเรียกภิกษุนามว่าอภิภูมาว่า ดูกรพราหมณ์ มาเถิด เราจักไปพรหมโลกชั้นใดชั้นหนึ่งชั่วกาลกว่าจะถึงเวลาฉัน ฯ

ภิกษุอภิภูทูลรับพระดำรัสของพระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธพระนามว่าสิขีแล้ว ฯ

ลำดับนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธพระนามว่าสิขี และภิกษุอภิภูได้หายไปจากอรุณวตีราชธานี ปรากฏในพรหมโลกนั้น เหมือนอย่างบุรุษผู้มีกำลังเหยียดแขนที่งอเข้ามาแล้วออกไป หรืองอแขนที่เหยียดออกไปแล้วเข้ามา ฉะนั้น ฯ

ลำดับนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าพระนามว่าสิขี ตรัสกะภิกษุอภิภูว่า ดูกรพราหมณ์ ธรรมีกถาจงแจ่มแจ้งแก่พรหม พรหมบริษัทและพรหมปาริสัชชะทั้งหลายเถิด ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุอภิภูรับพระดำรัสของพระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธพระนามว่าสิขีแล้ว แล้วยังพรหม พรหมบริษัท และพรหมปาริสัชชะทั้งหลายให้เห็นแจ้ง ให้สมาทาน ให้อาจหาญ ให้รื่นเริง ด้วยธรรมมีกถาแล้ว ฯ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ได้ยินว่าในกาลนั้น พรหม พรหมบริษัท และพรหมปาริสัชชะทั้งหลาย ยกโทษติเตียนโพนทะนาว่า แน่ะท่านผู้เจริญ น่าอัศจรรย์จริง ไม่เคยมีมาเลย ก็เมื่อพระศาสดาประทับอยู่เฉพาะหน้า เหตุไฉนพระสาวกจึงแสดงธรรม ฯ

ลำดับนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธพระนามว่าสิขี ตรัสเรียกภิกษุอภิภูมาว่า ดูกรพราหมณ์ พรหม พรหมบริษัท และพรหมปาริสัชชะเหล่านั้นติเตียนว่า แน่ะ ท่านผู้เจริญ น่าอัศจรรย์จริง ไม่เคยมีมาเลย ก็เมื่อพระศาสดาประทับอยู่เฉพาะหน้า เหตุไฉนพระสาวกจึงแสดงธรรม ดูกรพราหมณ์ ถ้าอย่างนั้นเธอจงให้พรหม พรหมบริษัท และพรหมปาริสัชชะทั้งหลายหลากใจ ยิ่งขึ้นกว่าประมาณ ฯ

ภิกษุภิอภูทูลรับพระดำรัสของพระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธพระนามว่าสิขีแล้ว มีกายปรากฏแสดงธรรมบ้าง มีกายไม่ปรากฏแสดงธรรมบ้าง มีกาย ปรากฏกึ่งหนึ่งตอนล่าง ไม่ ปรากฏกึ่งหนึ่งตอนบนแสดงธรรมบ้าง มีกายปรากฏกึ่งหนึ่งตอนบนไม่ปรากฏกึ่งหนึ่งตอนล่างแสดงธรรมบ้าง ฯ

ข้อ ๖๑๗ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ได้ยินว่า ในกาลนั้น พรหม พรหมบริษัท และพรหมปาริสัชชะทั้งหลาย ได้มีจิตพิศวงเกิดแล้วว่า น่าอัศจรรย์จริง ไม่เคยมีมาเลย ท่านผู้เจริญทั้งหลาย ความที่สมณะผู้เป็นมีฤทธิ์มาก มีอานุภาพมาก ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ครั้งนั้นแล ภิกษุอภิภูได้กราบทูลพระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธพระนามว่าสิขีว่า พระเจ้าข้า ข้าพระองค์ย่อมทราบ ข้าพระองค์เป็นผู้กล่าววาจาเห็นปานนี้ ในท่ามกลางภิกษุสงฆ์ว่า ท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย เราอยู่ที่พรหมโลกสามารถยังหมื่นโลกธาตุให้รู้แจ่มแจ้งด้วยเสียงได้ ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าพระนามว่าสิขีตรัสว่า ดูกรพราหมณ์ เป็นกาลของเธอที่เธอยืนอยู่ที่พรหมโลก พึงยังหมื่นโลกธาตุให้รู้แจ่มแจ้งด้วยเสียงได้ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย พระอภิภูทูลรับพระดำรัสของพระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธพระนามว่าสิขีว่า อย่างนั้นพระเจ้าข้า ดังนี้แล้ว ยืนอยู่ในพรหมโลก ได้ภาษิตคาถาเหล่านี้ว่า ท่านทั้งหลายจงริเริ่ม จงก้าวหน้า จงประกอบ (ความเพียร)ในพระพุทธศาสนา จงกำจัดเสนาแห่งมัจจุเหมือนช้างกำจัดเรือนไม้อ้อ ฉะนั้น ผู้ใดจักไม่ประมาทในพระธรรมวินัยนี้อยู่ ผู้นั้นจักละสงสารคือชาติแล้ว กระทำที่สุดแห่งทุกข์ได้ ฯ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ครั้งนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธพระนามว่าสิขี และภิกษุอภิภูยังพรหม พรหมบริษัท และพรหมปาริสัชชะ ทั้งหลายให้หลากใจแล้ว ได้หายไปจากพรหมโลกนั้น (มา) ปรากฏในอรุณวตีราชธานี เหมือนบุรุษผู้มีกำลังเหยียดแขนที่งอเข้ามาแล้วออกไป หรืองอแขนที่เหยียดออกไปแล้วเข้ามาฉะนั้น ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ครั้งนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธพระนามว่าสิขี ตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายมาว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อภิกษุอภิภูยืนอยู่ในพรหมโลก กล่าวคาถาทั้งหลายอยู่ เธอทั้งหลายได้ยินหรือไม่ ฯ

ภิกษุทั้งหลายกราบทูลว่า เมื่อภิกษุอภิภูยืนอยู่ในพรหมโลกกล่าวคาถาทั้งหลายอยู่ ข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายได้ยินแล้ว พระเจ้าข้า ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธพระนามว่าสิขี ตรัสถามว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็เมื่อภิกษุอภิภูยืนอยู่ในพรหมโลก กล่าวคาถาทั้งหลายอยู่ เธอทั้งหลายได้ยินว่าอย่างไร ฯ

ภิกษุทั้งหลายกราบทูลว่า พระเจ้าข้า เมื่อภิกษุอภิภูยืนอยู่ในพรหมโลก กล่าวคาถาทั้งหลายอยู่ ข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายได้ยินอย่างนี้ว่า “ท่านทั้งหลายจงริเริ่ม จงก้าวหน้า จงประกอบ (ความเพียร)ในพระพุทธศาสนา จงกำจัดเสนาแห่งมัจจุเหมือนช้างกำจัดเรือนไม้อ้อ ฉะนั้น ผู้ใดจักไม่ประมาทในพระธรรมวินัยนี้อยู่ ผู้นั้นจักละสงสารคือ ชาติ แล้วจักกระทำที่สุดทุกข์ได้พระเจ้าข้า ฯ

เมื่อภิกษุอภิภูยืนอยู่ในพรหมโลกกล่าวคาถาทั้งหลายอยู่ ข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายได้ยินแล้ว อย่างนี้ ฯ

ข้อ ๖๑๙พระผู้มีพระภาคอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธพระนามว่าสิขีตรัสว่า ดีละ ดีละ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ดีแท้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อภิกษุอภิภูยืนอยู่ในพรหมโลก กล่าวคาถาทั้งหลายอยู่ เธอทั้งหลายได้ยินแล้ว ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสพระพุทธพจน์นี้แล้ว ภิกษุทั้งหลายเหล่านั้นมีใจยินดีชื่นชมภาษิตของพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้ว ดังนี้แล ฯ

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

    So I have heard.

    ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati …pe…

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī.

    tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

    There he addressed the mendicants,

    “bhikkhavo”ti.

    “Mendicants!”

    “Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

    “Venerable sir,” they replied.

    Bhagavā etadavoca:

    The Buddha said this:

    “Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, rājā ahosi aruṇavā nāma.

    “Once upon a time, mendicants, there was a king named Aruṇavā.

    Rañño kho pana, bhikkhave, aruṇavato aruṇavatī nāma rājadhānī ahosi.

    He had a capital named Aruṇavatī.

  12. 2.3

    Aruṇavatiṁ kho pana, bhikkhave, rājadhāniṁ sikhī bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho upanissāya vihāsi.

    Sikhī the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha lived supported by Aruṇavatī.

    Sikhissa kho pana, bhikkhave, bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa abhibhūsambhavaṁ nāma sāvakayugaṁ ahosi aggaṁ bhaddayugaṁ.

    Sikhī had a fine pair of chief disciples named Abhibhū and Sambhava.

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, sikhī bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho abhibhuṁ bhikkhuṁ āmantesi:

    Then the Buddha Sikhī addressed the mendicant Abhibhū,

    ‘āyāma, brāhmaṇa, yena aññataro brahmaloko tenupasaṅkamissāma, yāva bhattassa kālo bhavissatī’ti.

    ‘Come, brahmin, let’s go to one of the realms of divinity until it’s time for our meal.’

    ‘Evaṁ, bhante’ti kho bhikkhave, abhibhū bhikkhu sikhissa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa paccassosi.

    ‘Yes, sir,’ replied Abhibhū.

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, sikhī bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho abhibhū ca bhikkhu—seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṁ vā bāhaṁ pasāreyya, pasāritaṁ vā bāhaṁ samiñjeyya; evameva—aruṇavatiyā rājadhāniyā antarahitā tasmiṁ brahmaloke pāturahesuṁ.

    Then, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, they vanished from Aruṇavatī and appeared in that realm of divinity.

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, sikhī bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho abhibhuṁ bhikkhuṁ āmantesi:

    Then the Buddha Sikhī addressed the mendicant Abhibhū,

    ‘paṭibhātu, brāhmaṇa, taṁ brahmuno ca brahmaparisāya ca brahmapārisajjānañca dhammī kathā’ti.

    ‘Brahmin, teach the Dhamma as you feel inspired for that divinity, his assembly, and the members of his retinue.’

    ‘Evaṁ, bhante’ti kho, bhikkhave, abhibhū bhikkhu sikhissa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa paṭissutvā, brahmānañca brahmaparisañca brahmapārisajje ca dhammiyā kathāya sandassesi samādapesi samuttejesi sampahaṁsesi.

    ‘Yes, sir,’ replied Abhibhū. Then he educated, encouraged, fired up, and inspired them with a Dhamma talk.

    Tatra sudaṁ, bhikkhave, brahmā ca brahmaparisā ca brahmapārisajjā ca ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti:

    But the Divinity, his assembly, and his retinue complained, grumbled, and objected,

    ‘acchariyaṁ vata, bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho, kathañhi nāma satthari sammukhībhūte sāvako dhammaṁ desessatī’ti.

    ‘Oh lord, how incredible, how amazing! How on earth can a disciple teach Dhamma in the presence of the Teacher?’

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, sikhī bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho abhibhuṁ bhikkhuṁ āmantesi:

    Then the Buddha Sikhī addressed the mendicant Abhibhū,

    ‘ujjhāyanti kho te, brāhmaṇa, brahmā ca brahmaparisā ca brahmapārisajjā ca—

    ‘Brahmin, the Divinity, his assembly, and his retinue are complaining

    acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho, kathañhi nāma satthari sammukhībhūte sāvako dhammaṁ desessatīti.

    that a disciple teaches Dhamma in the presence of the Teacher.

    Tena hi tvaṁ, brāhmaṇa, bhiyyoso mattāya brahmānañca brahmaparisañca brahmapārisajje ca saṁvejehī’ti.

    Well then, brahmin, stir them up even more!’

  27. 4.5

    ‘Evaṁ, bhante’ti kho, bhikkhave, abhibhū bhikkhu sikhissa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa paṭissutvā dissamānenapi kāyena dhammaṁ desesi, adissamānenapi kāyena dhammaṁ desesi, dissamānenapi heṭṭhimena upaḍḍhakāyena adissamānena uparimena upaḍḍhakāyena dhammaṁ desesi, dissamānenapi uparimena upaḍḍhakāyena adissamānena heṭṭhimena upaḍḍhakāyena dhammaṁ desesi.

    ‘Yes, sir,’ replied Abhibhū. Then he taught Dhamma with his body visible; with his body invisible; with the lower half visible and the upper half invisible; and with the upper half visible and the lower half invisible.

    Tatra sudaṁ, bhikkhave, brahmā ca brahmaparisā ca brahmapārisajjā ca acchariyabbhutacittajātā ahesuṁ:

    And the Divinity, his assembly, and his retinue, their minds full of wonder and amazement, thought,

    ‘acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho, samaṇassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā’ti.

    ‘Oh lord, how incredible, how amazing! The ascetic has such psychic power and might!’

  30. 5.1

    Atha kho abhibhū bhikkhu sikhiṁ bhagavantaṁ arahantaṁ sammāsambuddhaṁ etadavoca:

    Then Abhibhū said to the Buddha Sikhī,

    ‘abhijānāmi khvāhaṁ, bhante, bhikkhusaṅghassa majjhe evarūpiṁ vācaṁ bhāsitā—

    ‘Sir, I recall having said this in the middle of the Saṅgha:

    pahomi khvāhaṁ, āvuso, brahmaloke ṭhito sahassilokadhātuṁ sarena viññāpetun’ti.

    “Standing in the realm of divinity, I can make my voice heard throughout the thousandfold galaxy.”’

  33. 5.4

    ‘Etassa, brāhmaṇa, kālo, etassa, brāhmaṇa, kālo;

    ‘Now is the time, brahmin! Now is the time, brahmin!

  34. 5.5

    yaṁ tvaṁ, brāhmaṇa, brahmaloke ṭhito sahassilokadhātuṁ sarena viññāpeyyāsī’ti.

    Standing in the realm of divinity, make your voice heard throughout the thousandfold galaxy.’

  35. 5.6

    ‘Evaṁ, bhante’ti kho, bhikkhave, abhibhū bhikkhu sikhissa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa paṭissutvā brahmaloke ṭhito imā gāthāyo abhāsi:

    ‘Yes, sir,’ replied Abhibhū. Standing in the realm of divinity, he spoke this verse:

    ‘Ārambhatha nikkamatha,

    ‘Rouse yourselves! Try harder!

  37. 6.2

    Yuñjatha buddhasāsane;

    Devote yourselves to the teachings of the Buddha!

  38. 6.3

    Dhunātha maccuno senaṁ,

    Crush the army of Death,

  39. 6.4

    Naḷāgāraṁva kuñjaro.

    as an elephant a hut of reeds.

  40. 7.1

    Yo imasmiṁ dhammavinaye,

    Whoever shall meditate diligently

  41. 7.2

    appamatto vihassati;

    in this teaching and training,

  42. 7.3

    Pahāya jātisaṁsāraṁ,

    giving up transmigration through rebirths,

  43. 7.4

    dukkhassantaṁ karissatī’ti.

    will make an end of suffering.’

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, sikhī ca bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho abhibhū ca bhikkhu brahmānañca brahmaparisañca brahmapārisajje ca saṁvejetvā—

    Having inspired that divinity, his assembly, and his retinue with a sense of awe,

    seyyathāpi nāma …pe… tasmiṁ brahmaloke antarahitā aruṇavatiyā rājadhāniyā pāturahesuṁ.

    as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, Sikhī and Abhibhū vanished from that realm of divinity and appeared in Aruṇavatī.

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, sikhī bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho bhikkhū āmantesi:

    Then the Buddha Sikhī addressed the mendicants,

    ‘assuttha no tumhe, bhikkhave, abhibhussa bhikkhuno brahmaloke ṭhitassa gāthāyo bhāsamānassā’ti?

    ‘Mendicants, did you hear the mendicant Abhibhū speaking a verse while standing in a realm of divinity?’

  48. 8.5

    ‘Assumha kho mayaṁ, bhante, abhibhussa bhikkhuno brahmaloke ṭhitassa gāthāyo bhāsamānassā’ti.

    ‘We did, sir.’

  49. 8.6

    ‘Yathā kathaṁ pana tumhe, bhikkhave, assuttha abhibhussa bhikkhuno brahmaloke ṭhitassa gāthāyo bhāsamānassā’ti?

    ‘But what exactly did you hear?’

  50. 8.7

    Evaṁ kho mayaṁ, bhante, assumha abhibhussa bhikkhuno brahmaloke ṭhitassa gāthāyo bhāsamānassa:

    ‘This is what we heard, sir:

    ‘Ārambhatha nikkamatha,

    “Rouse yourselves! Try harder!

    sādhu kho tumhe, bhikkhave, assuttha abhibhussa bhikkhuno brahmaloke ṭhitassa gāthāyo bhāsamānassā’”ti.

    It’s good that you heard the mendicant Abhibhū speaking this verse while standing in a realm of divinity.’”

  62. 12.1

    Idamavoca bhagavā, attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandunti.

    That is what the Buddha said. Satisfied, the mendicants approved what the Buddha said.
