SN 7.6

Jaṭāsutta

A brahmin with matted hair asks the Buddha how we can become disentangled. This short set of verses became one of the most important in all of Theravāda Buddhism when it was used as the cornerstone of the commentarial treatise Visuddhimagga (Path of Purification).

สาวัตถีนิทาน ฯ ครั้งนั้นแล ชฏาภารทวาชพราหมณ์เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคยังที่ประทับ ครั้นแล้ว สนทนาปราศรัยกับพระผู้มีพระภาค ครั้นผ่านการปราศรัยพอให้ระลึกถึงกันไปแล้ว จึงนั่ง ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่ง ฯ

ชฏาภารทวาชพราหมณ์นั่ง ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่งแล้ว ได้กราบทูลพระผู้มีพระภาคด้วยคาถาว่า ตัณหาพายุ่งในภายใน พายุ่งในภายนอก หมู่สัตว์ถูกตัณหาพายุ่งรัดรึงไว้แล้ว ข้าแต่พระโคดม เพราะเหตุนั้นข้าพระองค์ขอทูลถามพระองค์ว่า ใครพึงสางตัณหาพายุ่งนี้ได้ ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ภิกษุใดเป็นคนมีปัญญา ตั้งมั่นอยู่ในศีล อบรมจิตและปัญญาให้เจริญ มีความเพียร มีปัญญารักษาตน ภิกษุนั้นพึงสางตัณหาพายุ่งนี้ได้ ราคะ โทสะและอวิชชา อันชนเหล่าใดสำรอกแล้ว ชนเหล่านั้นเป็นพระอรหันต์ มีอาสวะสิ้นแล้ว ตัณหาพายุ่งอันชนเหล่านั้นสางได้แล้ว นามและรูปย่อมดับไปไม่เหลือในที่ใด ปฏิฆสัญญา รูปสัญญา และตัณหาพายุ่งนั่น ย่อมขาดไปในที่นั้น ฯ

เมื่อพระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสอย่างนี้แล้ว ชฏาภารทวาชพราหมณ์ได้กราบทูลพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ภาษิตของพระองค์แจ่มแจ้งนัก ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ภาษิตของพระองค์แจ่มแจ้งนัก ฯลฯ ก็แหละท่านชฏาภารทวาชะได้เป็นพระอรหันต์รูปหนึ่ง ในบรรดาพระอรหันต์ทั้งหลาย ดังนี้แล ฯ

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    Atha kho jaṭābhāradvājo brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.

    Then the brahmin Bhāradvāja of the Matted Hair went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

    Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.

    When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side,

    Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho jaṭābhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    and addressed the Buddha in verse:

    “Antojaṭā bahijaṭā,

    “Tangled within, tangled without:

    Jaṭāya jaṭitā pajā;

    these people are tangled in tangles.

    Taṁ taṁ gotama pucchāmi,

    I ask you this, Gotama:

    Ko imaṁ vijaṭaye jaṭan”ti.

    who can untangle this tangle?”

    “Sīle patiṭṭhāya naro sapañño,

    “A wise person grounded in ethics,

  13. 3.2

    Cittaṁ paññañca bhāvayaṁ;

    developing the mind and wisdom,

  14. 3.3

    Ātāpī nipako bhikkhu,

    a keen and alert mendicant—

  15. 3.4

    So imaṁ vijaṭaye jaṭaṁ.

    they can untangle this tangle.

  16. 4.1

    Yesaṁ rāgo ca doso ca,

    Those in whom greed, hate, and ignorance

  17. 4.2

    avijjā ca virājitā;

    have faded away;

  18. 4.3

    Khīṇāsavā arahanto,

    the perfected ones with defilements ended—

  19. 4.4

    tesaṁ vijaṭitā jaṭā.

    they have untangled the tangle.

  20. 5.1

    Yattha nāmañca rūpañca,

    Where name and form

  21. 5.2

    asesaṁ uparujjhati;

    cease with no residue left behind;

  22. 5.3

    Paṭighaṁ rūpasaññā ca,

    as well as impingement and perception of form:

    etthesā chijjate jaṭā”ti.

    it’s here this tangle is cut.”

    Evaṁ vutte, jaṭābhāradvājo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    When he had spoken, Bhāradvāja of the Matted Hair said to the Buddha,

    “abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe…

    “Excellent, worthy Gotama! …” …

  26. 6.3

    aññataro ca panāyasmā bhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosī”ti.

    And Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the perfected.
