A brahmin conducting a fire sacrifice invites the Buddha to accept the blessed milk-rice, claiming that the Buddha is a true brahmin.

สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ในพระวิหารเวฬุวันอันเป็นที่พระราชทานเหยื่อแก่กระแต เขตพระนครราชคฤห์ ฯ ก็โดยสมัยนั้นแล อัคคิกภารทวาชพราหมณ์ปรุงข้าวปายาสด้วยเนยใสด้วยคิดว่า เราจักบูชาไฟ จักบำเรอการบูชาไฟ ฯ
ครั้งนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงนุ่งแล้ว ทรงถือบาตรและจีวรเสด็จเข้าไปสู่กรุงราชคฤห์เพื่อบิณฑบาตในเวลาเช้า เสด็จไปบิณฑบาตในกรุงราชคฤห์ตามลำดับตรอก เสด็จเข้าไปยังที่อยู่ของอัคคิกภารทวาชพราหมณ์ ครั้นแล้วได้ประทับยืนอยู่ ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่ง ฯ
อัคคิกภารทวาชพราหมณ์ ได้เห็นพระผู้มีพระภาคประทับยืนเพื่อบิณฑบาต ครั้นแล้วได้กราบทูลกะพระผู้มีพระภาคด้วยคาถาว่า พราหมณ์ผู้ถึงพร้อมแล้วด้วยไตรวิชชา มีชาติฟังคัมภีร์เป็นอันมาก ถึงพร้อมแล้วด้วยวิชชาและจรณะ พราหมณ์นั้นควรบริโภคปายาสนี้ ฯ
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า พราหมณ์ผู้กล่าวถ้อยคำแม้มาก เป็นผู้เน่าและเศร้าหมองในภายใน อันความโกหกแวดล้อมแล้ว ย่อมไม่ชื่อว่าเป็นพราหมณ์เพราะชาติ ผู้ใดรู้ปุพเพนิวาส และเห็นทั้งสวรรค์ทั้งอบาย อนึ่ง ถึงความสิ้นไปแห่งชาติ เป็นมุนีผู้อยู่จบแล้วเพราะรู้ยิ่ง ผู้นั้นเป็นผู้มีไตรวิชชาด้วยวิชชาสามเหล่านี้ ชื่อว่าเป็นพราหมณ์ผู้ถึงพร้อมแล้วด้วยวิชชาและจรณะ พราหมณ์นั้นควรบริโภคปายาสนี้ ฯ อัคคิกภารทวาชพราหมณ์กราบทูลว่า พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ขอเชิญบริโภคเถิด พระโคดมเป็นพราหมณ์ผู้เจริญ ฯ
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า เราไม่พึงบริโภคโภชนะที่ได้เพราะการขับกล่อม ดูกรพราหมณ์ นั่นไม่ใช่ธรรมของผู้พิจารณาอยู่ พระพุทธเจ้าทั้งหลายย่อมรังเกียจโภชนะที่ได้เพราะการขับกล่อม ดูกรพราหมณ์ เมื่อธรรมมีอยู่ ความเลี้ยงชีพนี้ก็ยังมี อนึ่ง ท่านจงบำรุงพระขีณาสพทั้งสิ้น ผู้แสวงหาคุณอันใหญ่ ผู้มีความคนองอันสงบแล้วด้วยข้าวน้ำอันอื่น เพราะว่าการบำรุงนั้นย่อมเป็นเขตของผู้มุ่งบุญ ฯ
เมื่อพระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสอย่างนี้แล้ว อัคคิกภารทวาชพราหมณ์ได้กราบทูลพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ภาษิตของพระองค์แจ่มแจ้งนัก ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้ เจริญ ภาษิตของพระองค์แจ่มแจ้งนัก ฯลฯ ก็แหละท่านพระภารทวาชได้เป็นพระอรหันต์รูปหนึ่ง ในบรรดาพระอรหันต์ทั้งหลาย ดังนี้แล ฯ

With Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.

Tena kho pana samayena aggikabhāradvājassa brāhmaṇassa sappinā pāyaso sannihito hoti:
Now at that time ghee and milk-rice had been set out for the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper, who thought,

“aggiṁ juhissāmi, aggihuttaṁ paricarissāmī”ti.
“I will serve the sacred flame! I will perform the fire sacrifice!”

Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya rājagahaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi.
Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Rājagaha for alms.

Rājagahe sapadānaṁ piṇḍāya caramāno yena aggikabhāradvājassa brāhmaṇassa nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.
Wandering indiscriminately for almsfood in Rājagaha, he approached Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper’s home and stood to one side.

Addasā kho aggikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ piṇḍāya ṭhitaṁ.
Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper saw him standing for alms

Disvāna bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
and addressed him in verse:

“Tīhi vijjāhi sampanno,
“One who’s accomplished in the three knowledges,
- 3.2
jātimā sutavā bahū;
of good birth and ample learning,
- 3.3
Vijjācaraṇasampanno,
accomplished in knowledge and conduct
- 3.4
somaṁ bhuñjeyya pāyasan”ti.
may enjoy this milk-rice.”

“Bahumpi palapaṁ jappaṁ,
“Even one who mutters many prayers
- 4.2
na jaccā hoti brāhmaṇo;
is no brahmin by birth
- 4.3
Antokasambu saṅkiliṭṭho,
if they’re filthy and corrupt within,
- 4.4
kuhanāparivārito.
with a following gained by fawning.

Pubbenivāsaṁ yo vedī,
One who knows their past lives,
- 5.2
saggāpāyañca passati;
sees heaven and places of loss,
- 5.3
Atho jātikkhayaṁ patto,
and has attained the ending of rebirth,

abhiññāvosito muni.
is a sage of perfect insight.

Etāhi tīhi vijjāhi,
Because of these three knowledges
- 6.2
tevijjo hoti brāhmaṇo;
a brahmin is a master of the three knowledges.

Vijjācaraṇasampanno,
Accomplished in knowledge and conduct,
- 6.4
somaṁ bhuñjeyya pāyasan”ti.
they may enjoy this milk-rice.”

“Bhuñjatu bhavaṁ gotamo.
“May the worthy Gotama eat!
- 7.2
Brāhmaṇo bhavan”ti.
The worthy one is a brahmin.”
- 8.1
“Gāthābhigītaṁ me abhojaneyyaṁ,
“Food enchanted by a verse isn’t fit for me to eat.
- 8.2
Sampassataṁ brāhmaṇa nesa dhammo;
That’s not the principle of those who see, brahmin.
- 8.3
Gāthābhigītaṁ panudanti buddhā,
The Buddhas cast aside things enchanted with verses.
- 8.4
Dhamme sati brāhmaṇa vuttiresā.
Since there is such a principle, brahmin,
that’s how they live. - 9.1
Aññena ca kevalinaṁ mahesiṁ,
Serve with other food and drink
- 9.2
Khīṇāsavaṁ kukkuccavūpasantaṁ;
the consummate one, the great seer,
- 9.3
Annena pānena upaṭṭhahassu,
with defilements ended and remorse stilled.
- 9.4
Khettañhi taṁ puññapekkhassa hotī”ti.
For he is the field for the seeker of merit.”

Evaṁ vutte, aggikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
When he had spoken, the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper said to the Buddha,

“abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe…
“Excellent, worthy Gotama! …” …
- 10.3
aññataro ca panāyasmā aggikabhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosīti.
And Venerable Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper became one of the perfected.
