เล่ม ๒๑ · หน้า ๑๐๙ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ต้นไม้ ๔ ชนิดนี้ ๔ ชนิดเป็นไฉน คือ ต้นไม้กะพี้มีไม้ กะพี้เป็นบริวารชนิด ๑ ต้นไม้กะพี้มีไม้แก่นเป็นบริวารชนิด ๑ ต้นไม้แก่นมีไม้กะพี้เป็นบริวารชนิด ๑ ต้นไม้แก่นมีไม้แก่นเป็นบริวารชนิด ๑ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ต้นไม้ ๔ ชนิดนี้แล ดูกรภิกษุ ทั้งหลาย ฉันนั้นเหมือนกันบุคคลเปรียบด้วยต้นไม้ ๔ จำพวกนี้ มีปรากฏอยู่ในโลก ๔ จำพวกเป็น ไฉน คือบุคคลดุจไม้กะพี้มีไม้กะพี้เป็นบริวารจำพวก ๑ ดุจไม้กะพี้มีไม้แก่นเป็นบริวารจำพวก ๑ ดุจไม้แก่นมีไม้กะพี้เป็นบริวารจำพวก ๑ ดุจไม้แก่นมีไม้แก่นเป็นบริวารจำพวก ๑ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็บุคคลเป็นดุจไม้กะพี้มีไม้กะพี้เป็นบริวารอย่างไรบุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ เป็นคนทุศีล มีบาป ธรรม แม้บริษัทของเขาก็เป็นคนทุศีล มีบาปธรรม บุคคลเป็นดุจไม้กะพี้มีไม้กะพี้เป็นบริวารอย่างนี้ แล ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ต้นไม้กะพี้มีไม้กะพี้เป็นบริวาร แม้ฉันใด เรากล่าวบุคคลนี้ เปรียบฉันนั้น
ก็บุคคลเป็นดุจไม้กะพี้มีไม้แก่นเป็นบริวารอย่างไร บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ เป็นคนทุศีล มีบาป ธรรม แต่บริษัทของเขาเป็นคนมีศีล มีกัลยาณธรรมบุคคลเป็นดุจไม้กะพี้มีไม้แก่นเป็นบริวารอย่าง นี้แล ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ต้นไม้กะพี้มีไม้แก่นเป็นบริวาร แม้ฉันใด เรากล่าวบุคคลนี้เปรียบฉันนั้น
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายก็บุคคลเป็นดุจไม้แก่นมีไม้กะพี้เป็นบริวารอย่างไร บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ เป็น ผู้มีศีล มีกัลยาณธรรม แต่บริวารของเขาเป็นคนทุศีล มีบาปธรรม บุคคลเป็นดุจไม้แก่นมีไม้กะพี้ เป็นบริวารอย่างนี้แล ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ต้นไม้แก่นมีไม้กะพี้เป็นบริวาร แม้ฉันใด เรากล่าวบุคคล นี้เปรียบฉันนั้น ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายก็บุคคลเป็นดุจไม้แก่นมีไม้แก่นเป็นบริวารอย่างไร บุคคล บางคนในโลกนี้ เป็นผู้มีศีล มีกัลยาณธรรม แม้บริษัทของเขาก็เป็นคนมีศีล มีกัลยาณธรรม บุคคล เป็นดุจไม้แก่นมีไม้แก่นเป็นบริวารอย่างนี้แล ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ต้นไม้แก่นมีไม้แก่นเป็นบริวารแม้ ฉันใด เรากล่าวบุคคลนี้เปรียบฉันนั้น ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายบุคคลเปรียบด้วยต้นไม้ ๔ จำพวกนี้แล มีปรากฏอยู่ในโลก ฯ

“Mendicants, there are these four kinds of tree.

pheggu sāraparivāro,
one is a softwood surrounded by hardwoods,

sāro phegguparivāro,
one is a hardwood surrounded by softwoods, and
- 1.6
sāro sāraparivāro—
one is a hardwood surrounded by hardwoods.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro rukkhā.
These are the four kinds of tree.

Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, cattāro rukkhūpamā puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.
In the same way, these four individuals similar to trees are found in the world.

And how is an individual a softwood surrounded by softwoods?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo dussīlo hoti pāpadhammo;
It’s when an individual is unethical, of bad character,
- 2.3
parisāpissa hoti dussīlā pāpadhammā.
and their followers are the same.
- 2.4
Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo pheggu hoti phegguparivāro.
That’s how an individual is a softwood surrounded by softwoods.

Seyyathāpi so, bhikkhave, rukkho pheggu phegguparivāro;
That individual is like a softwood tree that’s surrounded by softwoods, I say.

tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi.
