With a series of vivid similes, the Buddha shows how diligence leads to benefits in both this life and the next.
ฉบับหลวงอัปปมาทสูตร
ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ข้อ ๓๒๔ครั้งนั้น พราหมณ์คนหนึ่งเข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับได้ปราศรัย กับพระผู้มีพระภาค ครั้นผ่านการปราศรัยพอให้ระลึกถึงกันไปแล้ว จึงนั่ง ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่ง แล้วทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญธรรมข้อหนึ่งซึ่งเจริญแล้ว ทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมยึดถือประโยชน์ทั้ง ๒ ไว้ได้ คือประโยชน์ในปัจจุบัน และประโยชน์ในสัมปรายภพ มีอยู่ หรือหนอแล พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ดูกรพราหมณ์ ธรรมข้อหนึ่งซึ่งเจริญแล้ว ทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมยึดถือประโยชน์ทั้ง ๒ ไว้ได้ คือ ประโยชน์ในปัจจุบัน และประโยชน์ในสัมปรายภพมีอยู่ ฯ
อัญญ. ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ก็ธรรมข้อหนึ่งซึ่งเจริญแล้ว ทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมยึด ถือประโยชน์ทั้ง ๒ ไว้ได้ คือ ประโยชน์ในปัจจุบัน และประโยชน์ในสัมปรายภพ เป็นไฉน
พ. ดูกรพราหมณ์ ธรรมข้อหนึ่งซึ่งเจริญแล้ว ทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมยึดถือประโยชน์ ทั้ง ๒ ไว้ได้ คือ ประโยชน์ในปัจจุบัน และประโยชน์ในสัมปรายภพคือ ความไม่ประมาท ดูกรพราหมณ์ เปรียบเหมือนรอยเท้าชนิดใดชนิดหนึ่งของสัตว์ทั้งหลาย ผู้สัญจรไปบนแผ่นดิน
เล่ม ๒๒ · หน้า ๓๓๒รอยเท้าเหล่านั้นทั้งปวงย่อมรวมลงในรอยเท้าช้าง รอยเท้าช้างชาวโลกกล่าวว่าเป็นเยี่ยมกว่ารอยเท้า เหล่านั้น เพราะรอยเท้าช้างเป็นรอยเท้าใหญ่ ฉันใด ธรรมข้อหนึ่งซึ่งเจริญแล้ว ทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมยึดถือประโยชน์ทั้ง ๒ ไว้ได้ คือ ประโยชน์ในปัจจุบัน และประโยชน์ในสัมปรายภพ คือ ความไม่ประมาท ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน ดูกรพราหมณ์ เปรียบเหมือนกลอนชนิดใดชนิดหนึ่งแห่ง เรือนยอด กลอนเหล่านั้นทั้งปวงย่อมโน้มน้อมรวมเข้าหายอดเรือน ยอดเรือนชาวโลกกล่าวว่า เป็นเยี่ยม (ที่รวม) แห่งกลอนเหล่านั้น ฉันใด ธรรมข้อหนึ่งซึ่งเจริญแล้ว ทำให้มากแล้ว … ฉันนั้นเหมือนกันดูกรพราหมณ์ เปรียบเหมือนบุรุษผู้เกี่ยวหญ้า เกี่ยวหญ้าแล้ว จับที่ยอด ถือ คว่ำลงสลัดฟาดที่ต้นไม้ ฉันใด ธรรมข้อหนึ่งซึ่งเจริญแล้ว ทำให้มากแล้ว … ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน
ดูกรพราหมณ์ เปรียบเหมือนเมื่อพวงผลมะม่วงถูกตัดที่ต้นขั้ว ผลมะม่วงลูกใดลูกหนึ่งที่ติดอยู่กับ ต้นขั้ว ผลมะม่วงเหล่านั้นทั้งปวง ย่อมเป็นของติดไปกับต้นขั้ว ฉันใด ธรรมข้อหนึ่งซึ่งเจริญ แล้ว ทำให้มากแล้ว … ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน ดูกรพราหมณ์ เปรียบเหมือนพระราชาผู้ครองประเทศ เล็ก พระองค์ใดพระองค์หนึ่ง พระราชาเหล่านั้นทั้งปวง ย่อมเป็นผู้ขึ้นตรงต่อพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ พระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ ชาวโลกกล่าวว่าเป็นเยี่ยมกว่าพระราชาเหล่านั้น ฉันใด ธรรมข้อหนึ่งซึ่งเจริญ แล้ว ทำให้มากแล้ว … ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน ดูกรพราหมณ์เปรียบเหมือนแสงสว่างชนิดใดชนิดหนึ่ง แห่งดาวทั้งหลาย แสงสว่างเหล่านั้นทั้งปวงย่อมไม่ถึงส่วนที่สิบหกแห่งแสงสว่างพระจันทร์ แสงสว่างพระจันทร์ชาวโลกกล่าวว่าเป็นเยี่ยมกว่าแสงสว่างแห่งดาวเหล่านั้น ฉันใด ธรรมข้อ หนึ่งซึ่งเจริญแล้ว ทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมยึดถือประโยชน์ทั้ง ๒ ไว้ได้ คือ ประโยชน์ในปัจจุบัน และ ประโยชน์ในสัมปรายภพ คือ ความไม่ประมาท ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน ดูกรพราหมณ์ ธรรมข้อหนึ่ง ซึ่งเจริญแล้ว ทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมยึดถือประโยชน์ทั้ง ๒ ไว้ได้ คือประโยชน์ในปัจจุบัน และ ประโยชน์ในสัมปรายภพ คือ ความไม่ประมาทนี้แล ฯ
พราหมณ์ได้กราบทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ภาษิตของพระองค์แจ่มแจ้งนัก ข้า แต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ภาษิตของพระองค์แจ่มแจ้งนัก ฯลฯ ขอท่านพระโคดมโปรดทรงจำข้าพระองค์ ว่าเป็นอุบาสกผู้ถึงสรณะตลอดชีวิต ตั้งแต่วันนี้เป็นต้นไป ฯ

Diligence
- 1.1
Atha kho aññataro brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.
Then a certain brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.
- 1.2
Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

“Atthi nu kho, bho gotama, eko dhammo bhāvito bahulīkato yo ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati—diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ, yo ca attho samparāyiko”ti?
“Worthy Gotama, is there one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both this life and lives to come?”

“Atthi kho, brāhmaṇa, eko dhammo bhāvito bahulīkato yo ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati—diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ, yo ca attho samparāyiko”ti.
“There is, brahmin.”

“Katamo pana, bho gotama, eko dhammo bhāvito bahulīkato yo ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati—diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ, yo ca attho samparāyiko”ti?
“So what is it?”

“Appamādo kho, brāhmaṇa, eko dhammo bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati—diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ, yo ca attho samparāyiko.
“Diligence, brahmin, is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both this life and lives to come.

Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, yāni kānici jaṅgalānaṁ pāṇānaṁ padajātāni, sabbāni tāni hatthipade samodhānaṁ gacchanti; hatthipadaṁ tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati, yadidaṁ mahantattena.
The footprints of all creatures that walk can fit inside an elephant’s footprint. So an elephant’s footprint is said to be the biggest of them all.

Evamevaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, appamādo eko dhammo bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati—diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ, yo ca attho samparāyiko.
In the same way, diligence is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both this life and lives to come.

Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, kūṭāgārassa yā kāci gopānasiyo sabbā tā kūṭaṅgamā kūṭaninnā kūṭasamosaraṇā, kūṭaṁ tāsaṁ aggamakkhāyati;
The rafters of a bungalow all lean to the peak, slope to the peak, and meet at the peak, so the peak is said to be the topmost of them all.

- 6.1
Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, pabbajalāyako pabbajaṁ lāyitvā agge gahetvā odhunāti nidhunāti nicchādeti;
A reed-cutter, having cut the reeds, grabs them at the top and shakes them down, shakes them about, and shakes them off.

evamevaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa …pe….
In the same way, diligence is one thing …
- 7.1
Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, ambapiṇḍiyā vaṇṭacchinnāya yāni kānici ambāni vaṇṭūpanibandhanāni sabbāni tāni tadanvayāni bhavanti;
When the stalk of a bunch of mangoes is cut, all the mangoes attached to the stalk will follow along.

evamevaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa …pe….
In the same way, diligence is one thing …
- 8.1
Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, ye keci khuddarājāno sabbete rañño cakkavattissa anuyantā bhavanti, rājā tesaṁ cakkavattī aggamakkhāyati;
All lesser rulers are vassals of a wheel-turning monarch, so the wheel-turning monarch is said to be the foremost of them all.

In the same way, diligence is one thing …
- 9.1
Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, yā kāci tārakarūpānaṁ pabhā sabbā tā candassa pabhāya kalaṁ nāgghanti soḷasiṁ, candappabhā tāsaṁ aggamakkhāyati;
The radiance of all the stars is not worth a sixteenth part of the moon’s radiance, so the moon’s radiance is said to be the best of them all.
- 9.2
evamevaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, appamādo eko dhammo bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati—diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ yo ca attho samparāyiko.
In the same way, diligence is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both this life and lives to come.

Ayaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, eko dhammo bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati—diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ, yo ca attho samparāyiko”ti.
This is the one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both this life and lives to come.”

“Abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama, abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe…
“Excellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! …

upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.
From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
