The powers of faith, energy, conscience, prudence, mindfulness, samādhi, and wisdom.

ฉบับหลวงพลสูตรที่ ๒

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

ข้อ ๔ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย พละ ๗ ประการนี้ ๗ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ ศรัทธาพละ วิริยพละ หิริพละ โอตตัปปพละ สติพละ สมาธิพละ ปัญญาพละ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ ศรัทธาพละเป็นไฉน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีศรัทธา คือ เชื่อ พระปัญญาตรัสรู้ของพระตถาคตว่า แม้เพราะเหตุนี้ๆ พระผู้มีพระภาคพระองค์นั้น เป็นพระอรหันต์ ตรัสรู้เองโดยชอบ ฯลฯเป็นผู้ตื่นแล้ว เป็นผู้จำแนกธรรม นี้เรียกว่า ศรัทธาพละ ฯ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย วิริยพละเป็นไฉน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้ปรารภความเพียรเพื่อละอกุศลธรรม เพื่อความถึงพร้อมแห่งกุศลธรรม เป็นผู้มีกำลัง มี ความบากบั่นมั่นคง ไม่ทอดทิ้งธุระในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า วิริยพละ ฯ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็หิริพละเป็นไฉน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีความละอาย คือ ละอายต่อกายทุจริต วจีทุจริต มโนทุจริต ละอายต่อการถูกต้อง อกุศลธรรมอันลามกทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า หิริพละ ฯ

เล่ม ๒๓ · หน้า ๔ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็โอตตัปปพละเป็นไฉน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีความสะดุ้งกลัว คือ สะดุ้งกลัวต่อกายทุจริต วจีทุจริตมโนทุจริต สะดุ้งกลัวต่อการ ถูกต้องอกุศลธรรมอันลามกทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าโอตตัปปพละ ฯ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็สติพละเป็นไฉน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีสติ คือ ประกอบด้วยสติเครื่องรักษาตนอย่างยิ่ง ย่อมระลึกนึกถึงแม้สิ่งที่ทำคำที่พูดไว้ นานๆ ได้ นี้เรียกว่า สติพละ ฯ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็สมาธิพละเป็นไฉน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ สงัดจากกาม ฯลฯ บรรลุจตุตถฌาน นี้เรียกว่า สมาธิพละ ฯ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ปัญญาพละเป็นไฉน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีปัญญา คือ ประกอบด้วยปัญญาที่กำหนดความเกิดและความดับ เป็นอริยะ ชำแรกกิเลส

ให้ถึงความสิ้นทุกข์โดยชอบ นี้เรียกว่าปัญญาพละ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย พละ ๗ ประการนี้แล ฯ

ศรัทธาพละ วิริยพละ หิริพละ โอตตัปปพละ สติพละ

สมาธิพละ ปัญญาพละเป็นที่ ๗ ภิกษุผู้มีพละด้วยพละ ๗

ประการนี้ เป็นบัณฑิตย่อมอยู่เป็นสุข พึงเลือกเฟ้นธรรม

โดยแยบคาย ย่อมเห็นอรรถแห่งธรรมชัดด้วยปัญญา ความ

หลุดพ้นแห่งจิต (จริมกจิต) คือ ความดับของภิกษุนั้น

ย่อมมีได้ เหมือนความดับแห่งประทีป ฉะนั้น ฯ

    “Sattimāni, bhikkhave, balāni.

    “Mendicants, there are these seven powers.

    What seven?

    Saddhābalaṁ, vīriyabalaṁ, hirībalaṁ, ottappabalaṁ, satibalaṁ, samādhibalaṁ, paññābalaṁ.

    The powers of faith, energy, conscience, prudence, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, saddhābalaṁ?

    And what is the power of faith?

  8. 2.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiṁ:

    It’s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized One’s awakening:

    ‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti.

    ‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those fit for training, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’

    Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhābalaṁ.

    This is called the power of faith.

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, vīriyabalaṁ?

    And what is the power of energy?

  12. 3.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako āraddhavīriyo viharati akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya, kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ upasampadāya, thāmavā daḷhaparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu.

    It’s when a noble disciple lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. They’re strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities.

    Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vīriyabalaṁ.

    This is called the power of energy.

  14. 4.1

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, hirībalaṁ?

    And what is the power of conscience?

  15. 4.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako hirīmā hoti, hirīyati kāyaduccaritena vacīduccaritena manoduccaritena, hirīyati pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ samāpattiyā.

    It’s when a noble disciple has a conscience. They’re conscientious about bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and conscientious about acquiring any bad, unskillful qualities.

    Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, hirībalaṁ.

    This is called the power of conscience.

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, ottappabalaṁ?

    And what is the power of prudence?

  18. 5.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako ottappī hoti, ottappati kāyaduccaritena vacīduccaritena manoduccaritena, ottappati pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ samāpattiyā.

    It’s when a noble disciple is prudent. They’re prudent when it comes to bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and prudent when it comes to the acquiring of any bad, unskillful qualities.

    Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ottappabalaṁ.

    This is called the power of prudence.

  20. 6.1

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, satibalaṁ?

    And what is the power of mindfulness?

  21. 6.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako satimā hoti paramena satinepakkena samannāgato cirakatampi cirabhāsitampi saritā anussaritā.

    It’s when a noble disciple is mindful. They have utmost mindfulness and alertness, and can remember and recall what was said and done long ago.

    Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, satibalaṁ.

    This is called the power of mindfulness.

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, samādhibalaṁ?

    And what is the power of immersion?

  24. 7.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako vivicceva kāmehi

    It’s when a noble disciple, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected. …

    catutthaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.

    With the giving up of pleasure and pain and the disappearance of former happiness and sadness, they enter and remain in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.

    Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, samādhibalaṁ.

    This is called the power of immersion.

  28. 8.1

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, paññābalaṁ?

    And what is the power of wisdom?

  29. 8.2

    Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako paññavā hoti udayatthagāminiyā paññāya samannāgato ariyāya nibbedhikāya sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyā.

    It’s when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering.

  30. 8.3

    Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, paññābalaṁ.

    This is called the power of wisdom.

  31. 9.1

    Imāni kho, bhikkhave, satta balānīti.

    These are the seven powers.

  32. 10.1

    Saddhābalaṁ vīriyañca,

    The powers are faith and energy,

  33. 10.2

    hirī ottappiyaṁ balaṁ;

    conscience and prudence,

  34. 10.3

    Satibalaṁ samādhi ca,

    mindfulness and immersion,

  35. 10.4

    paññā ve sattamaṁ balaṁ;

    and wisdom as the seventh power.

  36. 10.5

    Etehi balavā bhikkhu,

    Empowered by these,

  37. 10.6

    sukhaṁ jīvati paṇḍito.

    an astute mendicant lives happily.

  38. 11.1

    Yoniso vicine dhammaṁ,

    They should examine the teaching rationally,

  39. 11.2

    paññāyatthaṁ vipassati;

    discerning the meaning with wisdom.

  40. 11.3

    Pajjotasseva nibbānaṁ,

    The liberation of their heart

  41. 11.4

    vimokkho hoti cetaso”ti.

    is like a lamp going out.”

  42. 11.5

    Catutthaṁ.
