Eight sets of qualities pertain to benefiting oneself and others.

ภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีความเข้าใจได้เร็วในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ๑ เป็นผู้ทรงจำธรรมที่ได้ฟัง แล้ว ๑ พิจารณาเนื้อความแห่งธรรมที่ทรงจำแล้ว ๑ รู้อรรถรู้ธรรมแล้วปฏิบัติธรรมสมควรแก่ ธรรม ๑ เป็นผู้มีวาจางาม กล่าวถ้อยคำไพเราะ ประกอบด้วยวาจาของชาวเมืองอันสละสลวย

ไม่มีโทษ ให้รู้ประโยชน์ ๑ เป็นผู้ชี้แจงสพรหมจารีให้เห็นแจ้ง ให้สมาทาน ให้อาจหาญ ร่าเริง ๑ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๖ ประการนี้แลเป็นผู้สามารถในอัน ปฏิบัติเพื่อประโยชน์เกื้อกูลแก่ทั้งตนเองและผู้อื่น ฯ

๔ ประการเป็นไฉน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีความเข้าใจได้เร็วใน อกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ๑ เป็นผู้ทรงจำธรรมที่ฟังแล้ว ๑ พิจารณาเนื้อความแห่งธรรมที่ได้ทรงจำ แล้ว ๑ รู้อรรถรู้ธรรมแล้วปฏิบัติธรรมสมควรแก่ธรรม ๑ หาเป็นผู้มีวาจางาม กล่าวถ้อยคำไพเราะ ประกอบด้วยวาจาของชาวเมืองอันสละสลวย ไม่มีโทษ ให้รู้ประโยชน์ไม่หาชี้แจงสพรหมจารี ให้เห็นแจ้ง ให้สมาทาน ให้อาจหาญร่าเริงไม่ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๔ ประการนี้แล เป็นผู้สามารถในอันปฏิบัติเพื่อประโยชน์เกื้อกูลแก่ตน แต่ไม่เป็นผู้สามารถในอัน ปฏิบัติเพื่อประโยชน์เกื้อกูลแก่ผู้อื่น ฯ

ธรรม ๔ ประการเป็นไฉน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้มีความเข้าใจได้เร็วใน กุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ๑ เป็นผู้ทรงจำธรรมที่ได้ฟังแล้ว ๑ แต่ไม่พิจารณาเนื้อความแห่งธรรมที่ได้ฟัง แล้ว และหารู้อรรถรู้ธรรมแล้วปฏิบัติธรรมสมควรแก่ธรรมไม่ เป็นผู้มีวาจางาม กล่าวถ้อยคำ ไพเราะ ประกอบด้วยวาจาของชาวเมืองอันสละสลวย ไม่มีโทษ ให้รู้ประโยชน์ ๑เป็นผู้ชี้แจง สพรหมจารีให้เห็นแจ้ง ให้สมาทาน ให้อาจหาญร่าเริง ๑ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุผู้ประกอบ ด้วยธรรม ๔ ประการนี้แล เป็นผู้สามารถในอันปฏิบัติเพื่อประโยชน์เกื้อกูลแก่ผู้อื่น แต่ไม่เป็นผู้ สามารถในอันปฏิบัติเพื่อประโยชน์เกื้อกูลแก่ตน ฯ

    “Chahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu alaṁ attano alaṁ paresaṁ.

    “Mendicants, a mendicant with six qualities is good enough for themselves and others.

    A mendicant is quick-witted when it comes to skillful teachings.

    They readily memorize the teachings they’ve heard.

    dhātānañca dhammānaṁ atthūpaparikkhitā hoti;

    They examine the meaning of teachings they’ve memorized.

    atthamaññāya dhammamaññāya dhammānudhammappaṭipanno ca hoti;

    Understanding the meaning and the teaching, they practice in line with the teaching.

    Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na heva kho khippanisanti ca hoti kusalesu dhammesu;

    A mendicant is not quick-witted when it comes to skillful teachings.

  70. 8.4

    no ca sutānaṁ dhammānaṁ dhāraṇajātiko hoti;

    And they don’t readily memorize the teachings they’ve heard.

  71. 8.5

    no ca dhātānaṁ dhammānaṁ atthūpaparikkhitā hoti;

    Nor do they examine the meaning of teachings they’ve memorized.

  72. 8.6

    no ca atthamaññāya dhammamaññāya dhammānudhammappaṭipanno hoti;

    Not understanding the meaning and the teaching, they don’t practice in line with the teaching.

  73. 8.7

    kalyāṇavāco ca hoti kalyāṇavākkaraṇo, poriyā vācāya samannāgato vissaṭṭhāya anelagaḷāya atthassa viññāpaniyā;

    But they’re a good speaker who enunciates well. Their voice is polished, clear, articulate, and expresses the meaning.

  74. 8.8

    sandassako ca hoti samādapako samuttejako sampahaṁsako sabrahmacārīnaṁ.

    They educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire their spiritual companions.

  75. 8.9

    Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dvīhi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu alaṁ paresaṁ, nālaṁ attano”ti.

    A mendicant with these two qualities is good enough for others but not for themselves.”
