ข้าพเจ้าได้สดับมาอย่างนี้
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระวิหารเชตวัน อารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ณ ที่นั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุเหล่านั้นทูลรับพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้ว พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสพระพุทธพจน์นี้ว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย พระมหาบุรุษผู้สมบูรณ์ด้วยมหาปุริสลักษณะ ๓๒ ประการเหล่านี้ ย่อมมีคติเป็นสองเท่านั้น ไม่เป็นอย่างอื่น คือ ถ้าครองเรือน จะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิผู้ทรงธรรม เป็นพระราชาโดยธรรม เป็นใหญ่ในแผ่นดิน มีมหาสมุทร ๔ เป็นขอบเขต ทรงชนะแล้ว มีราชอาณาจักรมั่นคง สมบูรณ์ด้วยแก้ว ๗ ประการ คือ จักรแก้ว ช้าง แก้ว ม้าแก้ว แก้วมณี นางแก้ว คฤหบดีแก้ว ปริณายกแก้วเป็นที่ ๗ พระราชบุตรของพระองค์มีกว่าพัน ล้วนกล้าหาญ มีรูปทรงสมเป็นวีรกษัตริย์ สามารถย่ำยีเสนาของข้าศึกได้ พระองค์ทรงชำนะโดยธรรม โดยเสมอ มิต้องใช้ศัสตรา มิต้องใช้อาชญา มิได้มีเสนียด ครอบครองแผ่นดินมีสาครเป็นขอบเขต มิได้มีเสาเขื่อน มิได้มีนิมิต ไม่มีเสี้ยนหนาม สำเร็จ แพร่หลาย มีความเกษมสำราญ ถ้าเสด็จออกผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคา คือ กิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย มหาปุริสลักษณะ ๓๒ ประการนั้น เป็นไฉน ซึ่งพระมหาบุรุษประกอบแล้วย่อมมีคติเป็นสองเท่านั้น ไม่เป็นอย่างอื่น คือ ถ้าครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ ฯลฯ อนึ่ง ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นเสด็จออกผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย พระมหาบุรุษในโลกนี้
๑. มีพระบาทประดิษฐานเป็นอันดี ภิกษุทั้งหลาย การที่พระมหาบุรุษมีพระบาทประดิษฐานเป็นอันดี นี้เป็นมหาปุริสลักษณะของมหาบุรุษ ฯ
๒. ณ พื้นภายใต้ฝ่าพระบาท ๒ ของพระมหาบุรุษ มีจักรเกิดขึ้น มีซี่กำข้างละพัน มีกง มีดุม บริบูรณ์ด้วยอาการทั้งปวง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้การที่พื้นภายใต้ฝ่าพระบาททั้ง ๒ ของพระมหาบุรุษ มีจักรเกิดขึ้น มีซี่กำข้างละพัน มีกง มีดุม บริบูรณ์ด้วยอาการทั้งปวง นี้ก็มหาปุริสลักษณะของพระมหาบุรุษ ฯ
๓. มีส้นพระบาทยาว ฯ
๔. มีพระองคุลียาว ฯ
๕. มีฝ่าพระหัตถ์และฝ่าพระบาทอ่อนนุ่ม ฯ
๖. มีฝ่าพระหัตถ์และฝ่าพระบาทมีลายดุจตาข่าย ฯ
๗. มีพระบาทเหมือนสังข์คว่ำ ฯ
๘. มีพระชงฆ์รีเรียวดุจแข้งเนื้อทราย ฯ
๙. เสด็จสถิตยืนอยู่มิได้น้อมลง เอาฝ่าพระหัตถ์ทั้งสองลูบคลำได้ถึงพระชาณุทั้งสอง ฯ
๑๐. มีพระคุยหะเร้นอยู่ในฝัก ฯ
๑๑. มีพระฉวีวรรณดุจวรรณะแห่งทองคำ คือมี พระตจะประดุจหุ้มด้วยทอง ฯ
๑๒. มีพระฉวีละเอียด เพราะพระฉวีละเอียด ธุลีละอองจึงมิติดอยู่ในพระกายได้ ฯ
๑๓. มีพระโลมชาติเส้นหนึ่งๆ เกิดในขุมละเส้นๆ ฯ
๑๔. มีพระโลมชาติมีปลายขึ้นช้อยขึ้นข้างบน มีสีเขียว มีสีเหมือนดอกอัญชัญ ขดเป็นกุณฑลทักษิณาวัฏ ฯ
๑๕. มีพระกายตรงเหมือนกายพรหม ฯ
๑๖. มีพระมังสะเต็มในที่ ๗ สถาน ฯ
๑๗. มีกึ่งพระกายท่อนบนเหมือนกึ่งกายท่อนหน้าของสีหะ ฯ
๑๘. มีระหว่างพระอังสะเต็ม ฯ
๑๙. มีปริมณฑลดุจไม้นิโครธ วาของพระองค์เท่ากับพระกายของพระองค์ พระกายของพระองค์ก็เท่ากับวาของพระองค์ ฯ
๒๐. มีลำพระศอกลมเท่ากัน ฯ
๒๑. มีปลายเส้นประสาทสำหรับนำรสอาหารอันดี ฯ
๒๒. มีพระหนุดุจคางราชสีห์ ฯ
๒๓. มีพระทนต์ ๔๐ ซี่ ฯ
๒๔. มีพระทนต์เรียบเสมอกัน ฯ
๒๕. มีพระทนต์ไม่ห่าง ฯ
๒๖. มีพระทาฐะขาวงาม ฯ

๒๘. มีพระสุรเสียงดุจเสียงแห่งพรหม ตรัสมีสำเนียงดังนกกรวิก ฯ

๓๐. มีดวงพระเนตรดุจตาแห่งโค ฯ
๓๑. มีพระอุณณาโลมบังเกิด ณ ระหว่างพระขนง มีสีขาวอ่อน ควรเปรียบด้วยนุ่น ฯ
๓๒. มีพระเศียรดุจประดับด้วยกรอบพระพักตร์ ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้การที่พระมหาบุรุษมีพระเศียรดุจประดับด้วยกรอบพระพักตร์นี้ ก็เป็นมหาปุริสลักษณะของพระมหาบุรุษนั้น ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย มหาปุริสลักษณะ ๓๒ ประการเหล่านี้แล ที่มหาบุรุษประกอบแล้ว ย่อมเป็นเหตุให้มีคติเป็นสองเท่านั้น ไม่เป็นอย่างอื่น คือ ถ้าครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ์ ฯลฯ อนึ่งถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือน ทรงผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะเป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลส อันเปิดแล้วในโลก ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกฤาษีแม้เป็นภายนอกย่อมทรงจำมหาปุริส ลักษณะของพระมหาบุรุษ ๓๒ เหล่านี้ได้ แต่ฤาษีทั้งหลายนั้น ย่อมไม่ทราบว่า เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก สัตว์ย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เพราะกรรมนี้อันตนทำสั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ สัตว์ที่บำเพ็ญกุศลกรรมนั้น ย่อมครอบงำเทวดาทั้งหลายอื่นในโลกสวรรค์ โดยสถาน ๑๐ คือ อายุทิพย์ วรรณทิพย์ ความสุขทิพย์ ยศทิพย์ ความเป็นอธิบดีทิพย์ รูปทิพย์ เสียงทิพย์ กลิ่นทิพย์ รสทิพย์ และโผฏฐัพพทิพย์ ครั้นจุติจากโลกสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะ ซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะนี้ ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อน เป็นผู้มีสมาทานมั่นในกุศลธรรม มีสมาทานไม่ถอยหลังในกายสุจริต ในวจีสุจริต ในมโนสุจริต ในการบำเพ็ญทาน ในการสมาทานศีล ในการรักษาอุโบสถ ในการปฏิบัติดีในมารดา ในการปฏิบัติดีในบิดา ในการปฏิบัติดีในสมณะ ในการปฏิบัติดีในพรหม ในความเป็นผู้เคารพต่อผู้ใหญ่ในสกุล และในธรรมเป็นอธิกุศลอื่นๆ ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำสั่งสม พอกพูนไพบูลย์ ตถาคตย่อมครอบงำเทวดาทั้งหลายอื่นในโลกสวรรค์ โดยสถาน ๑๐ คือ อายุทิพย์ วรรณทิพย์ ความสุขทิพย์ ยศทิพย์ ความเป็นอธิบดีทิพย์ รูปทิพย์ เสียงทิพย์ กลิ่นทิพย์ รสทิพย์ และโผฏฐัพพทิพย์ ครั้นจุติจากโลกสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาถึงความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะนี้ ฯ
พระมหาบุรุษนั้น มีพระบาทตั้งอยู่เฉพาะเป็นอันดี คือทรงเหยียบพระบาทเสมอกันบนพื้น ทรงยกพระบาทขึ้นก็เสมอกัน ทรงจดภาคพื้นด้วย ฝ่าพระบาททุกส่วนเสมอกัน พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะเป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ์ดำรงอยู่ในธรรม เป็นอิสระในแผ่นดินมีมหาสมุทร ๔ เป็นขอบเขต ทรงชำนะแล้ว มีราชอาณาจักรมั่นคง สมบูรณ์ด้วยรตนะ ๗ ประการ คือ จักรรัตน์ หัสดีรัตน์ อัสวรัตน์ มณีรัตน์ อิตถีรัตน์ คฤบดีรัตน์ ปริณายกรัตน์เป็นที่ ๗ และมีพระราชโอรสมากกว่าพัน ล้วนเป็นผู้แกล้วกล้า มีพระรูปสมเป็นวีรกษัตริย์ สามารถย่ำยีเสนาแห่งปรปักษ์เสียได้ และพระมหาบุรุษนั้นทรงชนะโดยธรรมมิต้องใช้อาชญา มิต้องใช้ศัสตรา ปกครองแผ่นดินนี้มีสาครเป็นขอบเขต มิได้มีเสาเขื่อน มิได้มีนิมิต ไม่มีเสี้ยนหนาม มั่งคั่งแพร่หลาย มีความเกษมสำราญ มิได้มีเสนียด เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้ผลข้อนี้ คือ ไม่มีใครๆ ที่เป็นมนุษย์ ซึ่งเป็นข้าศึกศัตรูจะพึงข่มได้ อนึ่ง ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือนทรงผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะเป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้ผลข้อนี้ คือ ไม่มีเหล่าข้าศึกศัตรูภายในหรือภายนอก คือ ราคะ โทสะ โมหะ หรือสมณพราหมณ์ เทวดา มาร พรหม ใครๆ ในโลกจะพึงข่มได้ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะนั้นว่า ฯ
พระมหาบุรุษยินดีในวจีสัจในธรรม ความฝึกตน ความสำรวม ความเป็นผู้สะอาด ศีลที่เป็นอาลัย อุโบสถกรรม ความไม่เบียดเบียนเหล่าสัตว์ และกรรมอันไม่สาหัส สมาทานแล้วมั่นคง ทรงประพฤติมาแล้วอย่างรอบคอบ เพราะกรรมนั้น พระมหาบุรุษจึงหลีกไปสู่ไตรทิพย์ เสวยความสุขและสมบัติเป็นที่เพลิดเพลินยินดี จุติจากไตรทิพย์แล้ว เวียนมาในโลกนี้ เหยียบปฐพีด้วยฝ่าพระบาทอันเรียบ พวกพราหมณ์ผู้ทำนายพระลักษณะมาประชุมกันแล้วทำนายว่า พระราชกุมารนี้ มีฝ่าพระบาทประดิษฐานเรียบ เป็นคฤหัสถ์หรือบรรพชิต ก็ไม่มีใครข่มได้ พระลักษณะนั้นย่อมเป็นนิมิตส่องเนื้อความนั้น พระราชกุมารนี้ เมื่ออยู่ครองฆราวาสไม่มีใครสามารถข่มได้ มีแต่ครอบงำพวกปรปักษ์ เหล่าศัตรูมิอาจย่ำยีได้ ใครๆ ที่เป็นมนุษย์ในโลกนี้หาข่มได้ไม่ เพราะผลแห่งกุศลกรรมนั้น ถ้าพระราชกุมารเช่นนั้น เข้าถึงบรรพชา ทรงยินดียิ่งด้วยความพอใจในเนกขัมมะ จะมีพระปรีชาเห็นแจ่มแจ้ง เป็นอัครบุคคล ไม่ถึงความเป็นผู้อันใครๆ ข่มได้ ย่อมเป็นผู้สูงสุดกว่านรชน อันนี้แลเป็นธรรมดาของพระกุมารนั้น ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อน ได้เป็นผู้นำความสุขมาให้แก่ชนเป็นอันมาก บรรเทาภัยคือความ หวาดกลัวและความหวาดเสียว จัดความรักษาปกครองป้องกันโดยธรรม และบำเพ็ญทานพร้อมด้วยวัตถุอันเป็นบริวาร เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก ย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เพราะกรรมนั้นอันตนทำสั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯ
ตถาคตย่อมครอบงำเทวดาทั้งหลายอื่นในโลกสวรรค์โดยสถาน ๑๐ คือ อายุทิพย์ วรรณ ทิพย์ ความสุขทิพย์ ยศทิพย์ ความเป็นอธิบดีทิพย์ รูปทิพย์ เสียงทิพย์ กลิ่นทิพย์ รสทิพย์ และโผฏฐัพพทิพย์ ครั้นจุติจากโลกสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาถึงความเป็นอย่างนี้ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะนี้ คือ ในฝ่าพระบาททั้ง ๒ มีจักรเกิดเป็นอันมาก มีซี่กำพันหนึ่ง มีกง มีดุม บริบูรณ์ด้วยอาการทั้งปวง มีระหว่างอันกุศลกรรมแบ่งเป็นอันดี พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือน จะเป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ์ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้ผลข้อนี้ คือ มีบริวารมาก คือ มีบริวารเป็นพราหมณ์ เป็นคฤหบดี เป็นชาวนิคม เป็นชาวชนบท เป็นโหราจารย์ เป็นมหาอำมาตย์ เป็นกองทหาร เป็นนายประตู เป็นอำมาตย์ เป็นบริษัท เป็นเจ้า เป็นเศรษฐี เป็นราชกุมาร ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือน ทรงผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะเป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้ผลข้อนี้ คือ มีบริวารมาก คือ มีบริวารเป็นภิกษุ เป็นภิกษุณี เป็นอุบาสก เป็นอุบาสิกา เป็นเทวดา เป็นมนุษย์ เป็นอสูร เป็นนาค เป็นคนธรรพ์ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะนั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อนๆ ผู้นำความสุขมาให้แก่ชนมาก บรรเทาภัยคือ ความหวาดกลัวและความหวาดเสียว ขวนขวายในความคุ้มครองรักษาป้องกัน เพราะกรรมนั้น พระมหาบุรุษจึงหลีกไปสู่ไตรทิพย์ เสวยความสุข และสมบัติเป็นที่เพลิดเพลินยินดี ครั้นจุติจากไตรทิพย์แล้ว เวียนมาในโลกนี้ ย่อมได้ลายจักรทั้งหลาย มีซี่กำพันหนึ่ง มีกง มีดุม โดยรอบ ในฝ่าพระบาททั้ง ๒ พวกพราหมณ์ผู้ทำนาย ลักษณะมาประชุมกันแล้วเห็นพระราชกุมารมีลักษณะอันเกิดด้วยบุญเป็นร้อยๆ แล้วทำนายว่า พระราชกุมารนี้จักมีบริวาร ย่ำยีเสียซึ่งศัตรู เพราะจักรทั้งหลายมีกงโดยรอบอย่างนั้น ถ้าพระราชกุมารเช่นนั้นไม่เข้าถึงบรรพชา จะยังจักรให้เป็นไปและปกครองแผ่นดิน มีกษัตริย์ที่มียศมากเป็นอนุยนต์ติดตามห้อมล้อมพระองค์ ถ้าและพระราชกุมารเช่นนั้นเข้าถึงบรรพชา เป็นผู้ยินดียิ่งด้วยความพอใจในเนกขัมมะ จะมีพระปรีชาเห็นแจ่มแจ้ง พวกเทวดา มนุษย์ อสูร ท้าวสักกะ ยักษ์ คนธรรพ์ นาค วิหค และสัตว์ ๔ เท้า ที่มียศมากจะห้อมล้อมพระองค์ผู้ไม่มีใครยิ่งกว่า อันเทวดาและมนุษย์บูชาแล้ว ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อน ละปาณาติบาตแล้ว เว้นขาดจากปาณาติบาตแล้ว วางทัณฑะ วางศาตราแล้ว มีความละอาย มีความกรุณา หวังประโยชน์แก่สัตว์ทั้งปวงอยู่ ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำสั่งสมพอกพูนไพบูลย์ ตถาคตย่อมครอบงำ เทวดาทั้งหลายอื่นในโลกสวรรค์ โดยสถาน ๑๐ คือ อายุทิพย์ วรรณทิพย์ ความสุขทิพย์ ยศทิพย์ ความเป็นอธิบดีทิพย์ รูปทิพย์ เสียงทิพย์ กลิ่นทิพย์ รสทิพย์ และโผฏฐัพพทิพย์ ครั้นจุติจากโลกสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่ง มหาปุริสลักษณะ ๓ ประการ คือ ส้นพระบาทยาว ๑ มีนิ้วพระหัตถ์และนิ้วพระบาทยาว ๑ มีพระกายตรงดังว่ากายแห่งพรหม ๑ พระมหาบุรุษนั้นสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะทั้งหลายนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะเป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ์ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาได้ผลข้อนี้ คือ มีพระชนมายุยืนดำรงอยู่นาน อภิบาลพระชนมายุยืนยาว ไม่มีใครๆ ที่เป็นมนุษย์ซึ่งเป็นข้าศึกศัตรูสามารถปลงพระชนม์ชีพในระหว่างได้ ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือนทรงผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะเป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้ผลข้อนี้ คือ มีพระชนมายุยืนดำรงอยู่นาน ทรงอภิบาลพระชนมายุยืนยาว ไม่มีข้าศึกศัตรูจะเป็นสมณะ พราหมณ์ เทวดา พรหม มาร ใครๆ ในโลก สามารถปลงพระชนม์ชีพในระหว่างได้ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะเหล่านั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษทรงทราบว่า การฆ่าอันเป็นเหตุให้สัตว์ตายว่าเป็นภัยแก่ตน ได้เป็นผู้เว้นขาดแล้ว เบื้องหน้าแต่มรณะ ได้ไปแล้วสู่สวรรค์ เพราะกรรมที่ทรงประพฤติดีแล้วนั้น เสวยวิบากอันเป็นผลแห่งกรรมที่ทรงทำดีแล้ว จุติแล้วเวียนมาในโลกนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งลักษณะ ๓ ในโลกนี้ คือ มีส้นพระบาทยาวงาม ๑ พระกายเกิดดีตรง สวยงาม ประหนึ่งว่ากายพรหม มีพระพาหางาม มีความเป็นหนุ่ม ทรวดทรงสวยเป็นสุชาต ๑ มีนิ้วพระหัตถ์และนิ้วพระบาทยาวอ่อนดังปุยฝ้าย ๑ พระชนกเป็นต้นทรงบำรุงพระราชกุมาร เพื่อให้มีพระชนมายุเป็นไปนาน เพราะพระองค์ทรงสมบูรณ์ด้วยปุริสลักษณะ ๓ ประการ ถ้าพระราชกุมารเป็นคฤหัสถ์ ก็จะให้พระชนม์ชีพเป็นไปนาน ถ้าทรงผนวชก็จะให้พระชนม์ชีพเป็นไปนานกว่านั้นเพื่อให้วสีและอิทธิเจริญไป พระลักษณะนั้นเป็นนิมิต เพื่อความเป็นผู้มีชนมายุยืน ด้วยประการดังนี้ ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อน เป็นผู้ให้ของที่ควรเคี้ยวและของที่ควรบริโภคอันประณีตและมีรสอร่อย และให้น้ำที่ควรซด ควรดื่ม ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากโลกสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะนี้ คือมีมังสะอูมในที่ ๗ สถาน คือที่หลังพระหัตถ์ทั้ง ๒ ก็มีมังสะอูม ที่หลังพระบาททั้ง ๒ ก็มีมังสะอูม ที่บนพระอังสาทั้ง ๒ ก็มีมังสะอูม ที่ลำพระศอ ก็มีมังสะอูม พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะเป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ์ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ ย่อมเป็นผู้ได้ของที่ควรเคี้ยวและของที่ควรบริโภคอันประณีตและมีรสอร่อย และได้น้ำที่ควรซด ควรดื่ม ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้น ออกจากเรือนทรงผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะเป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ ทรงได้ของที่ควรเคี้ยว และของที่ควรบริโภคอันประณีต และมีรสอร่อย และทรงได้น้ำที่ควรซดควรดื่ม พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะนั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษอุดม เป็นผู้ให้ของที่ควรเคี้ยว และของที่ควรบริโภค และ
น้ำที่ควรซดควรดื่ม มีรสอันเลิศ เพราะกรรมที่ทรงประพฤติดีแล้วนั้น
พระมหาบุรุษนั้น จึงบันเทิงใจอยู่นานในสวนนันทวัน มาในโลกนี้
ย่อมได้มังสะอูมเจ็ดแห่ง และได้พื้นพระหัตถ์และพระบาทอ่อนนุ่ม
บัณฑิตผู้ฉลาดในนิมิตแห่งลักษณะ กล่าวไว้เพื่อความเป็นผู้ได้ของควร
เคี้ยวและโภชนะอันมีรส ลักษณะนั้นใช่ว่าจะส่องอรรถ แม้แก่
พระมหาบุรุษผู้เป็นคฤหัสถ์เท่านั้น ถึงพระมหาบุรุษทรงผนวช ก็ได้
ขัชชโภชนาทิวัตถุนั้นเหมือนกัน พระองค์เป็นผู้ได้ของควรเคี้ยวและ
โภชนะมีรสอันอุดม บัณฑิตทั้งหลายกล่าวแล้วว่าพระองค์เป็นผู้ตัด
กิเลสเป็นเครื่องผูกของคฤหัสถ์ทั้งปวงเสีย ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อน เป็นผู้สงเคราะห์ประชาชนด้วยสังคหวัตถุ ๔ คือ การให้ การกล่าวคำเป็นที่รัก การประพฤติให้เป็นประโยชน์ และความเป็นผู้มีตนเสมอ ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากโลกสวรรค์นั้นแล้วมาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะ ทั้ง ๒ นี้ คือ พระหัตถ์และพระบาทมีพื้นอ่อนนุ่ม ๑ และมีพระหัตถ์และพระบาทมีลายดังว่าร่างข่าย ๑ พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะทั้ง ๒ นั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ์ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีบริวารชนอันพระองค์ทรงสงเคราะห์แล้วเป็นอย่างดี บริวารชนที่พระองค์ทรงสงเคราะห์เป็นอย่างดีนั้น เป็นพราหมณ์ เป็นคฤหบดี เป็นชาวนิคม เป็นชาวชนบท เป็นโหราจารย์ เป็นมหาอำมาตย์ เป็นกองทหาร เป็นนายประตู เป็นอำมาตย์ เป็นบริษัท เป็นเจ้า เป็นเศรษฐี เป็นราชกุมาร ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือนทรงผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีบริวารชนอันพระองค์ทรงสงเคราะห์แล้วเป็นอย่างดี บริวารชนที่พระองค์ทรงสงเคราะห์เป็นอย่างดีนั้น เป็นภิกษุ เป็นภิกษุณี เป็นอุบาสก เป็นอุบาสิกา เป็นเทวดา เป็นมนุษย์ เป็นอสูร เป็นนาค เป็นคนธรรพ์ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะเหล่านั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษทำแล้ว ประพฤติแล้ว ซึ่งการให้ ๑ ซึ่งความเป็นผู้ประพฤติให้เป็นประโยชน์ ๑ ซึ่งความเป็นผู้กล่าวคำเป็นที่รัก ๑ ซึ่งความเป็นผู้มีพระฉันทะเสมอกัน ๑ ให้เป็นความสงเคราะห์อย่างดีแก่ชนเป็นอันมาก ย่อมไปสู่สวรรค์ด้วยคุณอันตนมิได้ดูหมิ่น จุติแล้วเวียนมาในโลกนี้ เป็นพระกุมารยังหนุ่มแน่นงดงาม ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งความเป็นผู้มีฝ่าพระหัตถ์และฝ่าพระบาทอ่อนนุ่มด้วย ซึ่งความเป็นผู้มีฝ่าพระหัตถ์และฝ่าพระบาทมีลายเป็นร่างข่ายงามยิ่ง และมีส่วนสวยน่าชมด้วย พระองค์มาสู่แผ่นดินนี้ มีบริวารชนอันพระองค์พึงตรวจตราและสงเคราะห์ดี ตรัสถ้อยคำเป็นที่น่ารักแสวงหาผลประโยชน์เกื้อกูลและความสุขให้ทรงประพฤติความดีมากหลายที่พระองค์โปรดยิ่ง ถ้าพระองค์ทรงละความบริโภคกามารมณ์ทั้งปวง เป็นพระชินะตรัสธรรมกถาแก่ประชุมชน ประชุมชนก็จะสนองคำของพระองค์ เลื่อมใสยิ่งนัก ครั้งฟังธรรมแล้ว ย่อมจะพากันประพฤติธรรมสมควรแก่ธรรม ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อนเป็นผู้กล่าววาจาประกอบด้วยอรรถ ประกอบด้วยธรรม แนะนำประชาชนเป็นอันมาก เป็นผู้นำประโยชน์และความสุขมาให้แก่สัตว์ทั้งหลาย เป็นผู้บูชาธรรมเป็นปรกติ ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำสั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ จุติจากโลกสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะ ๒ ประการนี้ คือมีพระบาทดุจสังข์คว่ำ ๑ มีพระโลมชาติล้วนมีปลายช้อนขึ้นข้างบน ทุกๆ เส้น ๑ พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะทั้ง ๒ นั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ์ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ เป็นผู้เลิศประเสริฐ เป็นประธานสูงสุด ดีกว่าหมู่ชนที่บริโภคกาม ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ เป็นผู้เลิศประเสริฐ เป็นประธานสูงสุด ดีกว่าสรรพสัตว์ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะเหล่านั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษ พิจารณาก่อนจึงกล่าว คำอันประกอบด้วยอรรถและธรรม แสดงแล้วกะประชาชนเป็นอันมาก เป็นผู้นำประโยชน์และความสุขมาให้แก่สัตว์ทั้งหลาย เป็นผู้ไม่ตระหนี่ได้เสียสละบูชาธรรมแล้ว พระองค์ย่อมไปสู่สุคติ บันเทิงอยู่ในสุคตินั้น เพราะกรรมอันพระองค์ประพฤติดีแล้ว มาในโลกนี้ ย่อมได้ลักษณะ ๒ ประการ เพื่อความเป็นผู้มีความสุขอันอุดม พระมหาบุรุษนั่นนั้น มีพระโลมชาติ มีปลายช้อนขึ้นข้างบนและมีพระบาทดำรงอยู่แล้วเป็นอันดี อันพระมังสะและโลหิตปิดบัง อันหนังหุ้มห่อแล้ว และมีพระเพลาเบื้องบนงาม พระมหาบุรุษเช่นนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะถึงความเป็นผู้เลิศกว่าพวกที่บริโภคกาม ไม่มีใครๆ ยิ่งกว่าพระองค์ทรงครอบงำชมพูทวีปเสียสิ้น
อนึ่ง หากพระองค์ทรงผนวช ก็จะทรงพระวิริยะอย่าง
ประเสริฐ ถึงความเป็นผู้เลิศกว่าสรรพสัตว์ ไม่มีใครๆ ยิ่งกว่าพระองค์ได้
ทรงครอบงำโลกทั้งปวงอยู่ ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อน เป็นผู้ตั้งใจสอนศีลปะ วิชชา จรณะ หรือกรรม ด้วยมนสิการว่า ทำไฉนชนทั้งหลายนี้พึงรู้เร็ว พึงสำเร็จเร็ว ไม่พึงลำบากนาน ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำ สั่งสมพอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากโลกสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะนี้ คือ มีพระชงฆ์เรียวดังแข้งแห่งเนื้อทราย พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ์ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ จะทรงได้เฉพาะซึ่งหัตถาทิวาหนะ อันคู่ควรแก่พระราชา ซึ่งเป็นองค์แห่งเสนาของพระราชาโดยพลัน ฯลฯ ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือ กิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือจะทรงได้เฉพาะซึ่งจีวราทิปัจจัยอันสมควรแก่สมณะ และจตุบริษัทอันเป็นองค์ของสมณะ และทรงได้บริขารเป็นสมณูปโภคอันสมควรแก่สมณะโดยพลัน พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะนั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษปรารถนาอยู่ว่า ทำไฉน พวกศึกษาเหล่านี้จะรู้แจ่มแจ้งเร็วในศิลปะ ในวิชชา ในจรณะ และในกรรม และด่วนบอกศิลปะที่ไม่เป็นไป เพื่อจะเบียดเบียนแก่ใครๆ ด้วยความตั้งใจว่า ผู้ศึกษาจะไม่ลำบากนาน ครั้นทำกุศลกรรมมีความสุขเป็นผลนั้นแล้ว ย่อมได้พระชงฆ์ทั้งคู่เป็นที่ชอบใจ มีทรวดทรงดี กลมกล่อม เป็นสุชาต เรียวไปโดยลำดับ มีโลมชาติมีปลายช้อยขึ้นข้างบน มีหนังอันละเอียดหุ้มห่อแล้ว บัณฑิต ทั้งหลายชมพระมหาบุรุษนั้นว่า พระองค์มีพระชงฆ์ดังว่าแข้งแห่งเนื้อทราย และชมพระลักษณะ คือโลมชาติเส้นหนึ่งๆ อันประกอบ ด้วยสมบัติที่ใครๆ ปรารถนา รวมเข้าไว้ในที่นี้ พระมหาบุรุษเมื่อยังไม่ทรงผนวช ก็ได้ลักษณะนั้นในที่นี้เร็วพลัน ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษเช่นนั้น เข้าถึงบรรพชา ทรงยินดียิ่งแล้วด้วยความพอพระทัยในเนกขัมมะ มีพระปรีชาเห็นแจ่มแจ้งทรงพระวิริยะยอดเยี่ยม จะทรงได้พระลักษณะเป็นอนุโลม แก่พระลักษณะที่สมควรเร็วพลัน ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อน เป็นผู้เข้าหาสมณะหรือพราหมณ์แล้วซักถามว่า ข้าแต่ท่านผู้เจริญกรรมส่วนกุศลเป็นอย่างไร กรรมส่วนอกุศลเป็นอย่างไร กรรมส่วนที่มีโทษเป็นอย่างไร กรรมส่วนที่ไม่มีโทษเป็นอย่างไร กรรมที่ควรเสพเป็นอย่างไร กรรมที่ไม่ควรเสพเป็นอย่างไร กรรมอะไรข้าพเจ้าทำอยู่พึงเป็น ไปเพื่อไม่เป็นประโยชน์ เพื่อทุกข์ตลอดกาลนาน อนึ่ง กรรมอะไรข้าพเจ้าทำอยู่พึงเป็นไป เพื่อเป็นประโยชน์ เพื่อสุขตลอดกาลนาน ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะนี้ คือ มีพระฉวีสุขุม ละเอียด เพราะพระฉวีสุขุมและละเอียด ธุลีละอองมิติดพระกายได้ พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีปัญญามาก ไม่มีบรรดากามโภคีชนผู้ใดผู้หนึ่งมีปัญญาเสมอ หรือ มีปัญญาประเสริฐกว่าพระองค์ ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีพระปรีชามาก มีพระปรีชากว้างขวาง มีพระปรีชาร่าเริง มีพระปรีชาว่องไว มีพระปรีชาเฉียบแหลม มีพระปรีชาทำลายกิเลส ไม่มีบรรดาสรรพสัตว์ผู้ใดผู้หนึ่งมีปัญญาเสมอ หรือมีปัญญาประเสริฐกว่าพระองค์ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะนั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อนๆ ประสงค์จะรู้ทั่วถึง เข้าหาบรรพชิต สอบถามตั้งใจฟังด้วยดี มุ่งความเจริญอยู่ภายใน ไตร่ตรองกถาอันประกอบด้วยอรรถ มาอุบัติเป็นมนุษย์ มีพระฉวีละเอียด เพราะกรรมอันดำเนินไปเพื่อความได้เฉพาะซึ่งปัญญา บัณฑิตผู้ฉลาดใน ลักษณะและนิมิตทำนายว่า พระราชกุมารเช่นนี้จะทรงหยั่งทราบอรรถ อันสุขุมแล้วเห็นอยู่ ถ้าไม่เข้าถึงบรรพชาก็จะยังจักรให้เป็นไปปกครองแผ่นดิน ในการสั่งสอนสิ่งที่เป็นประโยชน์และในการกำหนด ไม่มีใครประเสริฐหรือเสมอเท่าพระองค์ ถ้าพระราชกุมารเช่นนั้น เข้าถึงบรรพชายินดียิ่งด้วยความพอพระทัยในเนกขัมมะ จะมีพระปรีชาเห็นแจ่มแจ้ง ทรงได้พระปรีชาอันพิเศษ อันยอดเยี่ยมบรรลุพระโพธิญาณ ทรงพระปรีชาอันประเสริฐกว้างขวางดังแผ่นดิน ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อน เป็นผู้ไม่มีความโกรธ ไม่มีความแค้นใจ แม้ถูกคนหมู่มากว่าเอาก็ไม่ขัดใจ ไม่โกรธ ไม่ปองร้าย ไม่จองผลาญ ไม่ทำความโกรธความเคืองและ ความเสียใจให้ปรากฎ และเป็นผู้ให้เครื่องลาดมี เนื้อละเอียดอ่อน และให้ผ้าสำหรับนุ่งห่ม คือ ผ้าโขมพัสตร์มีเนื้อละเอียด ผ้าฝ้ายมีเนื้อละเอียด ผ้าไหมมีเนื้อละเอียด ผ้ากัมพลมีเนื้อละเอียด ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะนี้ คือ มีวรรณะดังทองคำ มีผิวหนังคล้ายทองคำ พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้ รับผลข้อนี้ คือ จะได้เครื่องลาดมีเนื้อละเอียดอ่อน ทั้งได้ผ้าสำหรับนุ่งห่ม คือ ผ้าโขมพัสตร์มีเนื้อละเอียด ผ้าฝ้ายมีเนื้อละเอียด ผ้าไหมมีเนื้อละเอียด ผ้ากัมพลมีเนื้อละเอียด ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ ทรงได้เครื่องลาดมีเนื้อละเอียดอ่อน ทรงได้ผ้าสำหรับนุ่งห่ม คือ ผ้าโขมพัสตร์ มีเนื้อละเอียด ผ้าฝ้ายมีเนื้อละเอียด ผ้าไหมมีเนื้อละเอียด ผ้ากัมพลมีเนื้อละเอียด พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะนั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษอธิษฐานความเป็นผู้ไม่โกรธไว้ และได้ให้ทานคือผ้าเป็นอันมาก ล้วนแต่มีเนื้อละเอียดและมีสีดี เป็นผู้ดำรงอยู่ในภพก่อนๆ ทรงเสียสละเหมือนฝนตกทั่วแผ่นดิน ครั้นทรงทำกุศลกรรมนั้นแล้ว จุติจากมนุษยโลกเข้าถึงเทวโลก เสวยวิบาก อันเป็นผลกรรมที่ทำไว้ดี มีพระฉวีเปรียบด้วยทอง ดุจพระอินทร์ผู้ประเสริฐกว่าสุรเทวดา ย่อมลบล้นอยู่ในเทวโลก ถ้าเสด็จครองเรือนยังไม่ประสงค์ที่จะทรงผนวช ก็จะทรงปกครองแผ่นดินใหญ่ ทรงได้เฉพาะซึ่งสัตตรตนะ และความเป็นผู้มีพระฉวีสะอาดละเอียดงามลบล้นประชุมชนในโลกนี้ ถ้าเข้าถึงบรรพชา ก็จะทรงได้ซึ่งผ้าสำหรับทรงครอง เป็นผ้าเครื่องนุ่งห่มอย่างดี และเสวยผลกรรมที่เป็นประโยชน์ดีที่ทรงทำไว้ในภพก่อน ความหมดสิ้นแห่งผลกรรมที่พระองค์ทำแล้ว หามีไม่ ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อนกำเนิดก่อน เป็นผู้นำพวกญาติมิตรสหายผู้มีใจดีที่สูญหายพลัดพรากไปนานให้กลับมาพบกัน นำมารดากับบุตรให้พบกัน นำบุตรกับมารดาให้พบกัน นำบิดากับบุตรให้พบกัน นำบุตรกับบิดาให้พบกัน นำบิดากับพี่น้องให้พบกัน นำพี่ชายกับน้องสาวให้พบกัน นำน้องสาวกับพี่ชายให้พบกัน ครั้นทำเขาให้พร้อมเพรียงกันแล้ว ก็ชื่นชม ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากสวรรค์แล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะนี้ คือมีพระคุยหะเร้นอยู่ในฝัก พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีพระโอรสมาก พระราชบุตรของพระองค์มีกว่าพัน ล้วนกล้าหาญมีรูปทรงสมเป็นวีรกษัตริย์ สามารถย่ำยีเสนาของข้าศึกได้ ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีพระโอรสมาก พระโอรสของพระองค์มีจำนวนหลายพันล้วนเป็นผู้แกล้วกล้า มีความเพียรเป็นองค์สมบัติ กำจัดปรเสนาเสียได้ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะนั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อนๆ ได้ทรงนำพวกญาติมิตรสหายที่สูญหายพลัดพรากไปนานให้กลับมาพบกัน ครั้นทำให้เขาพร้อมเพรียงกันแล้ว ก็ชื่นชม เพราะกุศลกรรมนั้น พระองค์จึงหลีกไปสู่ไตรทิพย์ เสวยความสุขและสมบัติเป็นที่เพลิดเพลินยินดี จุติจากเทวโลกแล้วเวียนมาเกิดในโลกนี้ ย่อมได้องคาพยพที่ปิดบังด้วยผ้าตั้งอยู่ในฝัก พระมหาบุรุษเช่นนั้นมีพระโอรสมาก พระโอรสของพระองค์มากกว่าพัน เป็นผู้กล้าหาญ เป็นวีรบุรุษ สามารถให้ศัตรูพ่ายไป ให้ปีติเกิดและทูลปิยพจน์แก่พระมหาบุรุษที่ยังทรงเป็นคฤหัสถ์ เมื่อพระมหาบุรุษทรงผนวช บำเพ็ญพรต มีพระโอรสมากกว่านั้น ล้วนแต่ดำเนินตามพระพุทธพจน์ พระลักษณะนั้นย่อมเป็นนิมิตส่องความนั้น สำหรับพระมหาบุรุษที่เป็นคฤหัสถ์หรือบรรพชิต ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อน เมื่อตรวจดูมหาชนที่ควรสงเคราะห์ ย่อมรู้จักชนที่เสมอกัน รู้จักเองรู้จักบุรุษ รู้จักบุรุษพิเศษ หยั่งทราบว่าบุคคลนี้ควรแก่สักการะนี้ บุคคลนี้ควรแก่สักการะนี้ ดังนี้ แล้วทำกิจเป็นประโยชน์อันพิเศษ ในบุคคลนั้นๆ ในกาลก่อนๆตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากสวรรค์นั้นแล้วมาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะ ๒ ประการนี้ คือ มีพระกายเป็นปริมณฑลดังว่านิโครธพฤกษ์ ๑ เมื่อทรงยืนอยู่ไม่ต้องทรงน้อมพระกายลง ย่อมลูบคลำพระชาณุทั้ง ๒ ด้วยฝ่ายพระหัตถ์ทั้ง ๒ ได้ ๑ พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะทั้ง ๒ นั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ ฯลฯเมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ เป็นผู้มั่งคั่งมีทรัพย์มาก มีโภคะมาก มีทองและเงินมาก มีเครื่องอุปกรณ์น่าปลื้มใจมากมีทรัพย์และข้าวเปลือกมาก มีคลังเต็มบริบูรณ์ ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ เป็นผู้มั่งคั่งมีทรัพย์มาก มีโภคะมาก ทรัพย์ของพระองค์นั้นคือ ศรัทธา ศีล หิริ โอตตัปปะ สุตะ จาคะ ปัญญา เป็นทรัพย์อย่างหนึ่งๆ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะเหล่านั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษ เมื่อตรวจดูมหาชนที่ควรสงเคราะห์ พิจารณาแล้ว สอดส่องแล้ว คิดแล้วหยั่งทราบว่า บุคคลนี้ควรแก่สักการะนี้ ดังนี้แล้ว ทำกิจพิเศษของบุรุษในบุคคลนั้นๆ ในกาลก่อน ก็แหละพระมหาบุรุษ ทรงยืนตรงไม่ต้องน้อมพระกายลง ก็ถูกต้องพระชาณุทั้ง ๒ ด้วย พระกรทั้ง ๒ ได้ และมีพระกายเป็นปริมณฑลดังว่า ต้นนิโครธที่งอกงามบนแผ่นดินด้วยผลกรรมที่ประพฤติมาดีแล้ว ยังเป็นส่วนเหลือ มนุษย์ทั้งหลายที่มีปัญญาอันละเอียด รู้จักลักษณะเป็นนิมิตมากอย่าง ทำนายว่า พระราชโอรสนี้เป็นพระดรุณกุมาร ยังทรงพระเยาว์ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งลักษณะอันคู่ควรแก่คฤหัสถ์มากอย่าง กามโภคะอันสมควรแก่คฤหัสถ์เป็นอันมาก ย่อมมีแก่พระราชกุมารผู้เป็นใหญ่ในแผ่นดิน ในฆราวาสวิสัยนี้ ถ้าพระราชกุมารนี้ทรงละกามโภคะทั้งปวง จะทรงได้อนุตตรธรรม อันเป็นทรัพย์อย่างประเสริฐสูงสุด ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อนกำเนิดก่อน เป็นผู้หวังประโยชน์ หวังความเกื้อกูล หวังความผาสุก หวังความเกษมจากโยคะแก่ชนเป็นอันมาก ด้วยมนสิการว่า ทำไฉน ชนเหล่านี้พึงเจริญด้วยศรัทธา เจริญด้วยศีล เจริญด้วยสุตะ เจริญด้วยพุทธิ เจริญด้วยจาคะเจริญด้วยธรรม เจริญด้วยปัญญา เจริญด้วยทรัพย์และข้าวเปลือก เจริญด้วยนา และสวน เจริญด้วยสัตว์สองเท้าและสัตว์สี่เท้า เจริญด้วยบุตรและภรรยา เจริญด้วยทาสและกรรมกร เจริญด้วยญาติ เจริญด้วยมิตร เจริญด้วยพวกพ้อง ดังนี้ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะ ๓ ประการนี้ คือ มีส่วนพระกายข้างหน้าดังว่า กึ่งกายข้างหน้าแห่งราชสีห์ ๑ มีระหว่างพระปฤษฎางค์เต็มดี ๑ มีลำพระศอกลมเสมอกัน ๑ พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะ ๓ ประการนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีความไม่เสื่อมเป็นธรรมดา คือ ไม่เสื่อมจากทรัพย์และข้าวเปลือก ไม่เสื่อมจากนาและสวน ไม่เสื่อมจากสัตว์สองเท้าและสัตว์สี่เท้า ไม่เสื่อมจากบุตรและภรรยา ไม่เสื่อมจากทาสและกรรมกร ไม่เสื่อมจากญาติ ไม่เสื่อมจากมิตร ไม่เสื่อมจากพวกพ้อง ไม่เสื่อมจากสรรพสมบัติ ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีความไม่เสื่อมเป็นธรรมดา คือ ไม่เสื่อมจากศรัทธา ไม่เสื่อมจากศีล ไม่เสื่อมจากสุตะ ไม่เสื่อมจากจาคะ ไม่เสื่อมจากปัญญา ไม่เสื่อมจากสมบัติทั้งปวง พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะเหล่านั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษย่อมปรารถนาความเจริญกับด้วยประชาชนเหล่าอื่นว่า ทำไฉน พหุชนพึงไม่เสื่อมจากศรัทธา ศีล สุตะ พุทธิจาคะ ธรรมคุณ อันให้ประโยชน์สำเร็จมาก ทรัพย์ ข้าวเปลือก นา สวน บุตร ภรรยา สัตว์สองเท้าและสัตว์สี่เท้า ญาติมิตร พวกพ้อง และพละ วรรณะ สุข ทั้ง ๒ ประการ ดังนี้ทั้งหวังความมั่งมีและความสำเร็จ พระมหาบุรุษนั้นมีส่วนพระกายข้างหน้าดำรงอยู่เป็นอันดี ดังว่ากึ่งกายข้างหน้าแห่งราชสีห์ และมีพระศอกลมเสมอกัน ทั้งมีระหว่างพระปฤษฎางค์เต็มดี ลักษณะทั้ง ๓ นี้เป็นบุพพนิมิต ไม่เสื่อมปรากฏอยู่ เพราะกรรมที่พระมหาบุรุษประพฤติดีแล้ว ทำแล้วในกาลก่อน พระมหาบุรุษแม้ดำรงอยู่ในคิหิวิสัย ย่อมทรงเจริญด้วยข้าวเปลือกทรัพย์ บุตร ภรรยา สัตว์สองเท้าและสัตว์สี่เท้า ถ้าทรงตัดกังวลเสีย ทรงผนวช ย่อมทรงบรรลุพระสัมโพธิญาณอันประเสริฐ มีความไม่เสื่อมเป็นธรรมดา ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อนกำเนิดก่อน เป็นผู้ไม่เบียดเบียนสัตว์ทั้งหลายด้วยฝ่ามือ ก้อนดิน ท่อนไม้ หรือศัสตรา ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากสวรรค์นั้นแล้วมาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะนี้ คือ มีเส้นประสาทสำหรับนำรสอาหารอันเลิศ กล่าวคือ พระมหาบุรุษนั้นมีเส้น ประสาท มีปลายในเบื้องบนประชุมอยู่ที่ลำพระศอ สำหรับนำรสอาหารแผ่ซ่านไปสม่ำเสมอ ทั่วพระกาย พระองค์สมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีพระโรคาพาธน้อย สมบูรณ์ด้วยพระเตโชธาตุอันยังอาหารให้ย่อยดีไม่เย็นนัก ไม่ร้อนนัก ถ้าออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีพระโรคาพาธน้อย มีความลำบากน้อย สมบูรณ์ด้วยพระเตโชธาตุอันยังอาหารให้ย่อยดี ไม่เย็นนัก ไม่ร้อนนัก อันควรแก่พระปธานเป็นปานกลาง พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะเหล่านั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษไม่เบียดเบียน ไม่ย่ำยีสัตว์ด้วยฝ่ามือ ด้วยท่อนไม้ ด้วยก้อนดิน ด้วยศัสตรา ด้วยอันให้ตายเองและอันบังคับให้ฆ่า ด้วยอันจำจอง หรือด้วยอันให้หวาดกลัว เพราะกรรมนั้น นั่นแหละ พระมหาบุรุษไปจากมนุษยโลกจึงบันเทิงใจในสุคติทั้งหลาย และเพราะทำกรรมมีผลเป็นสุขจึงได้สุขมาก และมีเส้นประสาทสำหรับนำรสอาหาร เพราะฉะนั้น พวกพราหมณ์ผู้ฉลาดมีปัญญาอันเห็นแจ่มแจ้งจึงทำนายว่า พระราชกุมารนี้จักมีความสุขมาก ลักษณะนั้นย่อมส่องอรรถนั้น สำหรับพระราชกุมารผู้ยังดำรงอยู่ในคิหิวิสัยหรือผู้ทรงผนวช ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อนกำเนิดก่อน ไม่ถลึงตาดู ไม่ค้อนตาดู ไม่ชำเลืองตาดู เป็นผู้ตรง มีใจตรง เป็นปรกติแลดูตรงๆ และแลดูพหุชนด้วยปิยจักษุตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะ ๒ ประการ เหล่านี้ คือ มีพระเนตรสีดำสนิท ๑ มีดวงพระเนตรดังว่าตาแห่งโค ๑ พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะ ๒ ประการนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ เป็นผู้อันชนเป็นอันมากเห็นแล้วรัก เป็นที่รักใคร่พอใจแห่งพราหมณ์และคฤหบดี แห่งชาวนิคมและชาวชนบท แห่งโหราจารย์และมหาอำมาตย์ แห่งกองทหาร แห่งนายประตู แห่งอำมาตย์ แห่งบริษัท แห่งพวกเจ้า แห่งเศรษฐี แห่งพระราชกุมาร ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ เป็นผู้ที่ชนเป็นอันมากเห็นแล้วรัก เป็นที่รักใคร่พอใจแห่งภิกษุ ภิกษุณี อุบาสก อุบาสิกา เทวดา มนุษย์ อสูร นาคและคนธรรพ์ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะเหล่านั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษ ไม่ถลึงตาดู ไม่ค้อนตาดู ไม่ชำเลืองดู เป็นผู้ตรง มีใจตรงเป็นปรกติ แลดูพหุชนด้วยปิยจักษุ พระองค์เสวยวิบากอันเป็นผล บันเทิงอยู่ในสุคติทั้งหลาย มาในโลกนี้ มีดวงพระเนตรดังว่าตาแห่งโค และมีพระนัยนาคือพระเนตรมีสีดำสนิท มีการเห็นแจ่มใส พวกมนุษย์ผู้ประกอบในลักษณศาสตร์ มีความละเอียด ผู้ฉลาดในลักษณะเป็นนิมิตมีบทมาก ฉลาดในการตรวจเห็น นัยน์ตามีสีดำสนิทและดวงตาเป็นดังตาแห่งโค จะชมเชยพระราชกุมารนั้นว่า พระองค์เป็นที่เห็นน่ารัก พระมหาบุรุษดำรงอยู่ในคิหิวิสัยเป็นที่เห็น ที่น่ารัก เป็นที่รักของชนมาก ก็ถ้าพระองค์ทรงละคิหิวิสัยเป็นพระสมณะ ย่อมเป็นที่รักของพหุชน และยังชนเป็นอันมากให้สร่างโศก ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อน เป็นหัวหน้าของพหุชนในธรรมทั้งหลายฝ่ายกุศล เป็นประธานของพหุชนด้วยกายสุจริต ด้วยวจีสุจริต ด้วยมโนสุจริต ในการบำเพ็ญทาน ในการสมาทานศีล ในการรักษาอุโบสถ ในความปฏิบัติดีในมารดา ในความปฏิบัติดีในบิดา ในความปฏิบัติดีในสมณะ ในความปฏิบัติดีในพราหมณ์ ในความเคารพต่อเชฏฐชนในสกุล และในธรรมเป็นอธิกุศลอื่นๆ ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะนี้ คือมีพระเศียรได้ปริมณฑลดุจดังว่าประดับด้วยอุณหีส พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ เป็นที่คล้อยตามของมหาชน ที่เป็นพราหมณ์ เป็นคฤหบดี เป็นชาวนิคม เป็นชาวชนบท เป็นโหราจารย์ เป็นมหาอำมาตย์ เป็นกองทหาร เป็นนายประตู เป็นอำมาตย์ เป็นบริษัท เป็นเจ้า เป็นเศรษฐี เป็นราชกุมาร ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ เป็นที่คล้อยตามแห่งมหาชนที่เป็นภิกษุ เป็นภิกษุณี เป็นอุบาสก เป็นอุบาสิกา เป็นเทวดา เป็นมนุษย์ เป็นอสูร เป็นนาค เป็นคนธรรพ์ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะนั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษ เป็นหัวหน้าในธรรมทั้งหลายที่เป็นสุจริต ยินดียิ่งแล้วในธรรมจริยา เป็นที่คล้อยตามของพหุชน เสวยผลแห่งบุญในสวรรค์ทั้งหลาย ครั้นเสวยผลแห่งสุจริตแล้ว มาในโลกนี้ ได้ถึงความเป็นผู้มีพระเศียรดุจดังว่าประดับด้วยอุณหีส พวกผู้รู้ที่ทรงจำลักษณะเป็นนิมิตอันปรากฏอยู่ทำนายว่า พระราชกุมารนี้ จักเป็นหัวหน้าแห่งพหุชน หมู่ชนที่ช่วยเหลือของพระองค์ในหมู่มนุษย์ในโลกนี้ จักมีมาก แม้ในเบื้องต้น ครั้งนั้น พวกพราหมณ์ก็พยากรณ์แก่พระองค์ว่า พระราชกุมารนี้ ถ้าเป็นกษัตริย์จะเป็นใหญ่ในแผ่นดิน จะได้ความช่วยเหลือในชนมากโดยแท้ ถ้าพระองค์จะทรงผนวช จะปราชญ์เปรื่อง มีความชำนาญวิเศษในธรรมทั้งหลาย และชนเป็นอันมาก จะเป็นผู้ยินดียิ่งในคุณคือความสั่งสอนของพระองค์ และจะคล้อยตาม ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อน ละการพูดเท็จ เว้นขาดจากการพูดเท็จ พูดแต่คำจริง ดำรงคำสัตย์มีถ้อยคำเป็นหลักฐาน ควรเชื่อได้ ไม่พูดลวงโลก ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้น อันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะ ๒ ประการเหล่านี้ คือ มีโลมชาติขุมละเส้นๆ ๑ และมีอุณาโลมในระหว่างคิ้วมีสีขาวอ่อนเหมือนปุยฝ้าย ๑ พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ ด้วยลักษณะ ๒ ประการนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ เป็นที่ประพฤติตามของมหาชนที่เป็นพราหมณ์ เป็นคฤหบดี เป็นชาวนิคม เป็นชาวชนบท เป็นโหราจารย์ เป็นมหาอำมาตย์ เป็นกองทหาร เป็นนายประตู เป็นอำมาตย์ เป็นบริษัท เป็นเจ้า เป็นเศรษฐี เป็นราชกุมาร ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลส อันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ เป็นที่ประพฤติตามของมหาชนที่เป็นภิกษุ เป็นภิกษุณี เป็นอุบาสกเป็นอุบาสิกา เป็นเทวดา เป็นมนุษย์ เป็นอสูร เป็นนาค เป็นคนธรรพ์ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะเหล่านั้นว่า
ในชาติก่อนๆ พระมหาบุรุษมีปฏิญญาเป็นสัจจะ มีพระวาจาไม่เป็นสอง เว้นคำเหลวไหล ไม่พูดให้เคลื่อนคลาดต่อใครๆตรัสโดยคำจริง คำแท้ คำคงที่ มีพระอุณาโลมสีขาวสะอาดอ่อนดีดังปุยฝ้าย เกิดดีในระหว่างพระโขนงและในขุมพระโลมาทั่วไป ไม่มีโลมชาติเกิดเป็นสองเส้น มีพระสรีระอันโลมชาติเส้นหนึ่งๆ ขึ้นสะพรั่ง พวกผู้รู้ลักษณะ ฉลาดในลักษณะเป็นนิมิตที่ปรากฏ เป็นจำนวนมากมาประชุมกัน แล้วทำนายพระมหาบุรุษว่า พระอุณาโลมตั้งอยู่ดี โดยนิมิต บ่งว่าพหุชนย่อมประพฤติตาม พระมหาบุรุษแม้ดำรงอยู่ในคิหิวิสัย มหาชนก็ประพฤติตาม เพราะกรรมที่ทรงทำดีมากในชาติก่อน หมู่ชนย่อมประพฤติตามพระมหาบุรุษผู้ตัดกังวลทรงผนวชเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าผู้ประเสริฐ ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อนกำเนิดก่อน ละคำส่อเสียด เว้นขาดจากคำส่อเสียด ฟังจากข้างนี้แล้วไม่ไปบอกข้างโน้น เพื่อให้คนหมู่นี้ แตกร้าวกัน หรือฟังจากข้างโน้นแล้วไม่มาบอกข้างนี้ เพื่อให้คนหมู่โน้นแตกร้าวกัน สมานคนที่แตกร้าวกันแล้วบ้าง ส่งเสริมคนที่พร้อมเพรียงกันแล้วบ้าง ชอบคนผู้พร้อมเพรียงกันยินดี ในคนผู้พร้อมเพรียงกัน เพลิดเพลินในคนผู้พร้อมเพรียงกัน กล่าวแต่คำที่ทำให้คนพร้อมเพรียงกัน ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้นอันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะ ๒ ประการเหล่านี้ คือ มีพระทนต์ ๔๐ ซี่ ๑ มีพระทนต์ไม่ห่าง ๑ พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะ ๒ ประการนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไรเมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีบริษัทไม่แตกกัน บริษัทของพระองค์ที่ไม่แตกกัน เป็นพราหมณ์ เป็นคฤหบดี เป็นชาวนิคม เป็นชาวชนบท เป็นโหราจารย์ เป็นมหาอำมาตย์ เป็นกองทหาร เป็นนายประตู เป็นอำมาตย์ เป็นบริษัท เป็นเจ้า เป็นเศรษฐี เป็นราชกุมาร ถ้าออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีบริษัทไม่แตก บริษัทของพระองค์ที่ไม่แตกกัน เป็นภิกษุ เป็นภิกษุณี เป็นอุบาสก เป็นอุบาสิกา เป็นเทวดา เป็นมนุษย์ เป็นอสูร เป็นนาค เป็นคนธรรพ์ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะเหล่านั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษ ไม่ได้กล่าวแล้วซึ่งวาจาอันส่อเสียด อันทำความแตกแก่พวกที่ดีกัน อันทำความวิวาทเป็นเหตุให้ความแตกกันมากไป อันทำกิจอันไม่ควรเป็นเหตุให้ความทะเลาะกันมากไป อันยังความแตกกันให้เกิดแก่พวกที่ดีกัน ได้กล่าวแล้วซึ่งวาจาดี อันทำความไม่วิวาทกันให้เจริญไป อันยังความติดต่อกันให้เกิดแก่พวกที่แตกกัน บรรเทาความทะเลาะของชน มีความสามัคคีกับหมู่ชน ยินดีเบิกบานอยู่กับประชุมชนทั้งหลาย ย่อมเสวยวิบาก อันเป็นผลเบิกบานอยู่ในสุคติทั้งหลาย มาในโลกนี้ ย่อมมีพระทนต์ไม่ห่างเรียบดี และมีพระทนต์ ๔๐ ซี่เกิดอยู่ในพระโอษฐ์ตั้งอยู่เป็นอย่างดี ถ้าพระองค์เป็นกษัตริย์ เป็นใหญ่ในแผ่นดิน จะมีบริษัทไม่แตกกัน หากพระองค์เป็นสมณะ จะปราศจากกิเลส ปราศจากมลทิน บริษัทของพระองค์จะดำเนินตามไม่มีความหวั่นไหว ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อน ละคำหยาบ เว้นขาดจากคำหยาบ กล่าวแต่คำที่ไม่มีโทษ เพราะหู ชวนให้รัก จับใจ เป็นของชาวเมือง คนส่วนมากรักใคร่พอใจ ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้นอันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะ ๒ ประการเหล่านี้ คือ มี พระชิวหาใหญ่ ๑ มีพระสุรเสียงดังว่าเสียงพรหม เมื่อตรัสมีกระแสเหมือนเสียงนกการะเวก ๑ พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะ ๒ ประการนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีพระวาจาอันพหุชนพึงเชื่อถือ พหุชนที่เชื่อถือคำของพระองค์เป็นพราหมณ์ เป็นคฤหบดี เป็นชาวนิคม เป็นชาวชนบท เป็นโหราจารย์ เป็นมหาอำมาตย์ เป็นกองทหาร เป็นนายประตู เป็นอำมาตย์ เป็นเจ้า เป็นเศรษฐี เป็นราชกุมาร ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีพระวาจาอันพหุชนเชื่อถือ พหุชนที่เชื่อถือพระวาจาของพระองค์เป็นภิกษุ เป็นภิกษุณี เป็นอุบาสก เป็นอุบาสิกา เป็นเทวดา เป็นมนุษย์ เป็นอสูร เป็นนาค เป็นคนธรรพ์ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะเหล่านั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษ ไม่ได้กล่าวแล้วซึ่งวาจาหยาบอันทำความด่า ความบาดหมาง ความลำบากใจ ทำความเจ็บใจ เป็นเครื่องย่ำเหยียบแก่พหุชน เป็นคำชั่วร้าย ได้กล่าวแล้วซึ่งวาจาอ่อนหวานไพเราะ อันมีประโยชน์ดี กล่าววาจา เป็นที่รักแห่งใจ อันไปสู่หทัย อันสะดวกแก่โสต เสวยผลบุญในสวรรค์ทั้งหลาย ครั้นเสวยผลแห่งกรรมที่ประพฤติดีแล้ว มาในโลกนี้ ได้ถึงแล้วซึ่งความเป็นผู้มีเสียงดังว่าเสียงแห่งพรหม และมีพระชิวหาไพบูลย์กว้างมีคำที่ตรัสอันพหุชนเชื่อถือ ผลนี้ย่อมสำเร็จแก่พระองค์ แม้เป็นคฤหัสถ์ตรัสอยู่ฉันใด ถ้าพระองค์ทรงผนวช เมื่อตรัสคำที่ตรัสดีมากแก่พหุชนคำนั้น พหุชนก็เชื่อถือฉันนั้น โดยแท้ ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อน ละคำเพ้อเจ้อ เว้นขาดจากคำเพ้อเจ้อ พูดถูกกาล พูดแต่คำที่เป็นจริง พูดอิงอรรถ พูดอิงธรรม พูดอิงวินัย พูดแต่คำมีหลักฐาน มีที่อ้าง มีที่กำหนด ประกอบประโยชน์โดยกาลอันควร ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้นอันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูน ไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากสวรรค์นั้นแล้ว มาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะนี้ คือ มีพระหนุดังว่าคางราชสีห์ พระมหาบุรุษสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะนั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ ไม่มีใครๆ ที่เป็นมนุษย์เป็นข้าศึกศัตรูกำจัดได้ ถ้าออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้คือ ไม่มีข้าศึกศัตรูภายในภายนอก คือ ราคะ โทสะ โมหะ หรือสมณะพราหมณ์ เทวดา มาร พรหม ใครๆ ในโลกกำจัดได้ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสคำนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะนั้นว่า
พระมหาบุรุษ ไม่กล่าวคำเพ้อเจ้อ ไม่กล่าวคำปราศจากหลักฐาน มีคลองพระวาจาไม่เหลวไหล ทรงบรรเทาเสียซึ่งคำที่ไม่เป็นประโยชน์ ตรัสแต่คำที่เป็นประโยชน์และคำที่เป็นสุขแก่พหุชน ครั้นทำกรรมนั้นแล้วจุติแล้วจากมนุษยโลก เข้าถึงแล้วซึ่งเทวโลกเสวยวิบากอันเป็นผลแห่งกรรมที่ทำดีแล้ว จุติแล้วเวียนมาในโลกนี้ ได้แล้วซึ่งความเป็นผู้มีพระหนุดังว่าคางราชสีห์ที่ประเสริฐกว่าสัตว์สี่เท้า เป็นพระราชาที่เป็นใหญ่กว่า มนุษย์แสนยากที่ใครจะกำจัดพระองค์ได้ พระองค์เป็นผู้ใหญ่ยิ่งของมวลมนุษย์ มีอานุภาพมากเป็นผู้เสมอด้วยเทวดาผู้ประเสริฐในชั้นไตรทิพย์ และเป็นเหมือนพระอินทร์ผู้ประเสริฐกว่าเทวดา เป็นผู้มั่นคง อันคนธรรพ์ อสูร ท้าวสักกะและยักษ์ผู้กล้าไม่กำจัดได้โดยง่ายเลย พระมหาบุรุษเช่นนั้น ย่อมเป็นใหญ่ทุกทิศในโลกนี้โดยแท้ ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตเคยเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติก่อน ภพก่อน กำเนิดก่อน ละมิจฉาอาชีวะแล้ว สำเร็จความเป็นอยู่ด้วยสัมมาอาชีวะ เว้นขาดจากการโกงด้วยตาชั่ง การโกงด้วยของปลอม และการโกงด้วยเครื่องตวงวัด และการโกงด้วยการรับสินบน การหลอกลวง และตลบตะแลง เว้นขาดจากการตัด การฆ่าการจองจำ การตีชิง การปล้นและกรรโชก ตถาคตย่อมเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ เบื้องหน้าแต่ตายเพราะกายแตก เพราะกรรมนั้นอันตนทำ สั่งสม พอกพูนไพบูลย์ ฯลฯ ครั้นจุติจากสวรรค์นั้นแล้วมาสู่ความเป็นอย่างนี้ ย่อมได้เฉพาะซึ่งมหาปุริสลักษณะ ๒ เหล่านี้ คือ มีพระทนต์เสมอกัน ๑ และมีพระทาฐะสีขาวงาม ๑ พระมหาบุรุษนั้นสมบูรณ์ด้วยลักษณะทั้ง ๒ นั้น ถ้าอยู่ครองเรือนจะได้เป็นพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิ ฯลฯ เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระราชาจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีบริวารสะอาด บริวารของพระองค์ที่สะอาดนั้นเป็นพราหมณ์และคฤหบดี เป็นชาวนิคมและชาวชนบท เป็นโหราจารย์และมหาอำมาตย์ เป็นกองทหาร เป็นนายประตู เป็นอำมาตย์ เป็นบริษัท เป็นเจ้า เป็นเศรษฐี เป็นราชกุมาร ก็ถ้าพระมหาบุรุษนั้นออกจากเรือนผนวชเป็นบรรพชิต จะได้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า มีหลังคาคือกิเลสอันเปิดแล้วในโลก เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้อะไร เมื่อเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าจะได้รับผลข้อนี้ คือ มีบริวารสะอาดบริวารของพระองค์ที่สะอาดนั้น เป็นภิกษุ เป็นภิกษุณี เป็นอุบาสก เป็นอุบาสิกา เป็นเทวดา เป็นมนุษย์ เป็นอสูร เป็นนาค เป็นคนธรรพ์ พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเนื้อความนี้ไว้ พระโบราณกเถระทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ในพระลักษณะเหล่านั้นว่า

The Marks of a Great Man

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard.

ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:
There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,

“bhikkhavo”ti.
“Mendicants!”
- 1.1.5
“Bhaddante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.
“Venerable sir,” they replied.

The Buddha said this:

“Dvattiṁsimāni, bhikkhave, mahāpurisassa mahāpurisalakkhaṇāni, yehi samannāgatassa mahāpurisassa dveva gatiyo bhavanti anaññā.
“There are thirty-two marks of a great man. A great man who possesses these has only two possible destinies, no other.

Sace agāraṁ ajjhāvasati, rājā hoti cakkavattī dhammiko dhammarājā cāturanto vijitāvī janapadatthāvariyappatto sattaratanasamannāgato.
If he stays at home he becomes a king, a wheel-turning monarch, a just and principled king. His dominion extends to all four sides, he achieves stability in the country, and he possesses the seven treasures.

He has the following seven treasures:

Seyyathidaṁ—cakkaratanaṁ hatthiratanaṁ assaratanaṁ maṇiratanaṁ itthiratanaṁ gahapatiratanaṁ pariṇāyakaratanameva sattamaṁ.
the wheel, the elephant, the horse, the jewel, the woman, the householder, and the commander as the seventh treasure.

Parosahassaṁ kho panassa puttā bhavanti sūrā vīraṅgarūpā parasenappamaddanā.
He has over a thousand sons who are valiant and heroic, crushing the armies of his enemies.

So imaṁ pathaviṁ sāgarapariyantaṁ adaṇḍena asatthena dhammena abhivijiya ajjhāvasati.
After conquering this land girt by sea, he reigns by principle, without rod or sword.

Sace kho pana agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajati, arahaṁ hoti sammāsambuddho loke vivaṭṭacchado.
But if he goes forth from the lay life to homelessness, he becomes a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha, who has cast off the world’s veil.

He has well-planted feet.

On the soles of his feet there are thousand-spoked wheels, with rims and hubs, complete in every detail.

Between his eyebrows there grows a tuft, soft and white like cotton-wool.

The crown of his head is like a turban.

These are the thirty-two marks of a great man. A great man who possesses these has only two possible destinies, no other.

Seers who are outsiders remember these marks, but they do not know

the specific deeds performed in the past to obtain each mark.
1. Suppatiṭṭhitapādatālakkhaṇaṁ
1. Well-Planted Feet

Yampi, bhikkhave, tathāgato purimaṁ jātiṁ purimaṁ bhavaṁ purimaṁ niketaṁ pubbe manussabhūto samāno daḷhasamādāno ahosi kusalesu dhammesu, avatthitasamādāno kāyasucarite vacīsucarite manosucarite dānasaṁvibhāge sīlasamādāne uposathupavāse matteyyatāya petteyyatāya sāmaññatāya brahmaññatāya kule jeṭṭhāpacāyitāya aññataraññataresu ca adhikusalesu dhammesu.
In some past lives, past existences, past abodes the Realized One was reborn as a human being. He firmly and persistently undertook skillful behaviors such as good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, giving and sharing, taking precepts, observing the sabbath, paying due respect to mother and father, ascetics and brahmins, honoring the elders in the family, and various other things pertaining to skillful behaviors.

So tassa kammassa kaṭattā upacitattā ussannattā vipulattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjati.
Due to performing, accumulating, heaping up, and amassing those deeds, when his body broke up, after death, he was reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.

So tattha aññe deve dasahi ṭhānehi adhiggaṇhāti dibbena āyunā dibbena vaṇṇena dibbena sukhena dibbena yasena dibbena ādhipateyyena dibbehi rūpehi dibbehi saddehi dibbehi gandhehi dibbehi rasehi dibbehi phoṭṭhabbehi.
There he surpassed the other gods in ten respects: heavenly lifespan, beauty, happiness, glory, sovereignty, sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches.

So tato cuto itthattaṁ āgato samāno imaṁ mahāpurisalakkhaṇaṁ paṭilabhati.
When he passed away from there and came back to this place he obtained this mark of a great man:

Suppatiṭṭhitapādo hoti.
he has well-planted feet.
- 1.4.6
Samaṁ pādaṁ bhūmiyaṁ nikkhipati, samaṁ uddharati, samaṁ sabbāvantehi pādatalehi bhūmiṁ phusati.
He places his foot on the ground evenly, raises it evenly, and touches the ground evenly with the whole sole of his foot.

So tena lakkhaṇena samannāgato sace agāraṁ ajjhāvasati, rājā hoti cakkavattī dhammiko dhammarājā cāturanto vijitāvī janapadatthāvariyappatto sattaratanasamannāgato.
Possessing this mark, if he stays at home he becomes a wheel-turning monarch.

After conquering this land girt by sea—free of harassment by bandits, successful and prosperous, safe, blessed, free of pests—he reigns by principle, without rod or sword.

Rājā samāno kiṁ labhati?
And what does he obtain as king?

Akkhambhiyo hoti kenaci manussabhūtena paccatthikena paccāmittena.
He can’t be stopped by any human foe or enemy.

Rājā samāno idaṁ labhati.
That’s what he obtains as king.
- 1.5.9
Sace kho pana agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajati, arahaṁ hoti sammāsambuddho loke vivaṭṭacchado.
But if he goes forth from the lay life to homelessness, he becomes a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha, who has cast off the world’s veil.

Buddho samāno kiṁ labhati?
And what does he obtain as Buddha?

Akkhambhiyo hoti abbhantarehi vā bāhirehi vā paccatthikehi paccāmittehi rāgena vā dosena vā mohena vā samaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā mārena vā brahmunā vā kenaci vā lokasmiṁ.
He can’t be stopped by any foe or enemy whether internal or external; nor by greed, hate, or delusion; nor by any ascetic or brahmin or god or Māra or divinity or by anyone in the world.

Buddho samāno idaṁ labhati”.
That’s what he obtains as Buddha.”

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.

On this it is said:

“Sacce ca dhamme ca dame ca saṁyame,
“Truth, principle, self-control, and restraint;

Soceyyasīlālayuposathesu ca;
purity, precepts, and observing the sabbath;

Dāne ahiṁsāya asāhase rato,
giving, harmlessness, delighting in non-violence—

Daḷhaṁ samādāya samattamācari.
firmly undertaking these things, he lived accordingly.

So tena kammena divaṁ samakkami,
By means of these deeds he went to heaven,

Sukhañca khiḍḍāratiyo ca anvabhi;
where he enjoyed happiness and merriment.

Tato cavitvā punarāgato idha,
After passing away from there to here,

Samehi pādehi phusī vasundharaṁ.
he steps evenly on this rich earth.

Byākaṁsu veyyañjanikā samāgatā,
The gathered soothsayers predicted
- 1.6.11
Samappatiṭṭhassa na hoti khambhanā;
that there is no stopping one of such even tread,
- 1.6.12
Gihissa vā pabbajitassa vā puna,
as householder or renunciate.

Taṁ lakkhaṇaṁ bhavati tadatthajotakaṁ.
That’s the meaning shown by this mark.

Akkhambhiyo hoti agāramāvasaṁ,
While living at home he cannot be stopped,
- 1.6.15
Parābhibhū sattubhi nappamaddano;
he defeats his foes, and cannot be beaten.

Manussabhūtenidha hoti kenaci,
Due to the fruit of that deed,

Akkhambhiyo tassa phalena kammuno.
he cannot be stopped by any human.

Sace ca pabbajjamupeti tādiso,
But if one such chooses the life gone forth,

Nekkhammachandābhirato vicakkhaṇo;
seeing clearly, loving renunciation,

Aggo na so gacchati jātu khambhanaṁ,
not even the best can ever stop him;

Naruttamo esa hi tassa dhammatā”ti.
this is the nature of the supreme man.”

bahujanassa sukhāvaho ahosi, ubbegauttāsabhayaṁ apanuditā, dhammikañca rakkhāvaraṇaguttiṁ saṁvidhātā, saparivārañca dānaṁ adāsi.
He conveyed happiness to many people, casting out threats, terror, and danger, providing just protection and security, and giving gifts with all the trimmings.

of brahmins and householders, people of town and country, treasurers and chief ministers, military officers, guardsmen, ministers, councillors, rulers, tax beneficiaries, and princes.

eagerly guarding and protecting them.

By means of these deeds he went to heaven,

Sukhañca khiḍḍāratiyo ca anvabhi;
where he enjoyed happiness and merriment.

Tato cavitvā punarāgato idha,
After passing away from there to here,

Cakkāni pādesu duvesu vindati.
wheels on his two feet are found,
- 1.9.10
Samantanemīni sahassarāni ca,
all rimmed around and thousand-spoked.

Byākaṁsu veyyañjanikā samāgatā;
The gathered soothsayers predicted,

Disvā kumāraṁ satapuññalakkhaṇaṁ,
seeing the prince
with the hundred-fold mark of merits, - 1.9.13
Parivāravā hessati sattumaddano.
that he’d have a following, subduing foes,

Tathā hi cakkāni samantanemini,
which is why he has wheels all rimmed around.
- 1.9.15
Sace na pabbajjamupeti tādiso;
If one such doesn’t choose the life gone forth,
- 1.9.16
Vatteti cakkaṁ pathaviṁ pasāsati,
he’ll roll the wheel and rule the land.
- 1.9.17
Tassānuyantādha bhavanti khattiyā.
The aristocrats will be his vassals,
- 1.9.18
Mahāyasaṁ samparivārayanti naṁ,
flocking to his glory.
- 1.9.19
Sace ca pabbajjamupeti tādiso;
But if one such chooses the life gone forth,
- 1.9.20
Nekkhammachandābhirato vicakkhaṇo,
seeing clearly, loving renunciation,

Devā manussāsurasakkarakkhasā.
the gods, humans, titans, Sakka, and monsters;

Gandhabbanāgā vihagā catuppadā,
centaurs and dragons, birds and beasts,
- 1.9.23
Anuttaraṁ devamanussapūjitaṁ;
will flock to his glory,

Mahāyasaṁ samparivārayanti nan”ti.
the supreme, honored by gods and humans.”

“Mendicants, in some past lives the Realized One was reborn as a human being.

pāṇātipātaṁ pahāya pāṇātipātā paṭivirato ahosi nihitadaṇḍo nihitasattho lajjī dayāpanno, sabbapāṇabhūtahitānukampī vihāsi.
He gave up killing living creatures, renouncing the rod and the sword. He was scrupulous and kind, living full of sympathy for all living beings.

he has stretched heels, long fingers, and his body is tall and straight-limbed.

Sukataphalavipākamanubhosi.
where he enjoyed the fruit of deeds well done.

Caviya punaridhāgato samāno,
Passing away, on his return to here,

Paṭilabhati idha tīṇi lakkhaṇāni;
he obtained these three marks:

Bhavati vipuladīghapāsaṇhiko,
his stretched heels are abundant and long,
- 1.12.9
Brahmāva suju subho sujātagatto.
and like the Divinity, he’s straight and beautiful,
with well-formed limbs. - 1.12.10
Subhujo susu susaṇṭhito sujāto,
Fair of arm, youthful, of good posture and breeding,
- 1.12.11
Mudutalunaṅguliyassa honti;
his fingers are soft and tender and long.
- 1.12.12
Dīghā tībhi purisavaraggalakkhaṇehi,
By these three marks of an excellent man,
- 1.12.13
Cirayapanāya kumāramādisanti.
they indicated that the prince’s life would be long:

Bhavati yadi gihī ciraṁ yapeti,
‘As a householder he will live long;
- 1.12.15
Cirataraṁ pabbajati yadi tato hi;
longer still if he goes forth, due to
- 1.12.16
Yāpayati ca vasiddhibhāvanāya,
mastery in the development of psychic power.
- 1.12.17
Iti dīghāyukatāya taṁ nimittan”ti.
Thus this is the sign of long life.’”
6. Sattussadatālakkhaṇaṁ
6. Seven Bulging Places

“Yampi, bhikkhave, tathāgato purimaṁ jātiṁ purimaṁ bhavaṁ purimaṁ niketaṁ pubbe manussabhūto samāno
“Mendicants, in some past lives the Realized One was reborn as a human being.

dātā ahosi paṇītānaṁ rasitānaṁ khādanīyānaṁ bhojanīyānaṁ sāyanīyānaṁ lehanīyānaṁ pānānaṁ.
He was a donor of delicious and tasty cooked and fresh foods, and drinks that were sweet and succulent.

Due to performing those deeds he was reborn in a heavenly realm.

When he came back to this place he obtained this mark: he has bulging muscles in seven places.

ubhosu hatthesu ussadā honti, ubhosu pādesu ussadā honti, ubhosu aṁsakūṭesu ussadā honti, khandhe ussado hoti.
Both hands, both feet, both shoulders, and his chest are all bulging.

Because of that good deed,

Nandane ciramabhippamodati.
he rejoiced long in the Garden of Delight.

Satta cussade idhādhigacchati,
On returning to here, he is rounded in seven places,
- 1.15.7
Hatthapādamudutañca vindati;
and tender hands and feet are found.
- 1.15.8
Āhu byañjananimittakovidā,
The soothsayers expert in signs declared:
- 1.15.9
Khajjabhojjarasalābhitāya naṁ.
‘He’ll get tasty foods of all sorts
- 1.15.10
Yaṁ gihissapi tadatthajotakaṁ,
as a householder, that’s what that means.
- 1.15.11
Pabbajjampi ca tadādhigacchati;
But even if he goes forth he’ll get the same,
- 1.15.12
Khajjabhojjarasalābhiruttamaṁ,
supreme in gaining tasty foods of all sorts,
- 1.15.13
Āhu sabbagihibandhanacchidan”ti.
cutting all bonds of the lay life.’”
7–8. Karacaraṇamudujālatālakkhaṇāni
7–8. Tender and Serried Hands

“Mendicants, in some past lives the Realized One was reborn as a human being.

catūhi saṅgahavatthūhi janaṁ saṅgāhako ahosi—
He brought people together using the four ways of being inclusive:

dānena peyyavajjena atthacariyāya samānattatāya.
giving, kindly words, taking care, and equality.

Due to performing those deeds he was reborn in a heavenly realm.

Mudutalunahatthapādo ca hoti jālahatthapādo ca.
his hands and feet are soft and tender, and they are serried.

Susaṅgahitaparijano hoti, susaṅgahitāssa honti brāhmaṇagahapatikā negamajānapadā gaṇakamahāmattā anīkaṭṭhā dovārikā amaccā pārisajjā rājāno bhogiyā kumārā.
His retinue is inclusive, cohesive, and well-managed. This includes brahmins and householders, people of town and country, treasurers and chief ministers, military officers, guardsmen, ministers, councillors, rulers, tax beneficiaries, and princes.

Caviya punaridhāgato samāno,
Passing away, on his return to here,
- 1.18.7
Karacaraṇamudutañca jālino ca;
the young baby prince obtained
- 1.18.8
Atirucirasuvaggudassaneyyaṁ,
hands and feet so tender and serried,
- 1.18.9
Paṭilabhati daharo susu kumāro.
lovely, graceful, and good-looking.
- 1.18.10
Bhavati parijanassavo vidheyyo,
His retinue is loyal and manageable,
- 1.18.11
Mahimaṁ āvasito susaṅgahito;
staying agreeably all over this broad land.
- 1.18.12
Piyavadū hitasukhataṁ jigīsamāno,
Speaking kindly, seeking happiness,
- 1.18.13
Abhirucitāni guṇāni ācarati.
he implements agreeable qualities.
- 1.18.14
Yadi ca jahati sabbakāmabhogaṁ,
But if he gives up all sensual enjoyments,
- 1.18.15
Kathayati dhammakathaṁ jino janassa;
as victor he speaks Dhamma to the people.
- 1.18.16
Vacanapaṭikarassābhippasannā,
Devoted, they respond to his words;
- 1.18.17
Sutvāna dhammānudhammamācarantī”ti.
after listening, they practice in line with the teaching.”
9–10. Ussaṅkhapāda-uddhaggalomatālakkhaṇāni
9–10. Arched Feet and Upright Hair

“Yampi, bhikkhave, tathāgato purimaṁ jātiṁ purimaṁ bhavaṁ purimaṁ niketaṁ pubbe manussabhūto samāno
“Mendicants, in some past lives the Realized One was reborn as a human being.

atthūpasaṁhitaṁ dhammūpasaṁhitaṁ vācaṁ bhāsitā ahosi, bahujanaṁ nidaṁsesi, pāṇīnaṁ hitasukhāvaho dhammayāgī.
His speech was meaningful and principled. He educated many people, bringing welfare and happiness, offering the teaching.

the tops of his feet are arched and his hairs stand up.

He is the foremost, best, chief, highest, and finest of those who enjoy sensual pleasures.

He is the foremost, best, chief, highest, and finest of all sentient beings.

moving the people with his explanations.

Pāṇinaṁ hitasukhāvaho ahu,
He brought welfare and happiness to creatures,
- 1.21.5
Dhammayāgamayajī amaccharī.
unstintingly offering up teaching.
- 1.21.6
Tena so sucaritena kammunā,
Because of that good deed,
- 1.21.7
Suggatiṁ vajati tattha modati;
he advanced to heaven and there rejoiced.
- 1.21.8
Lakkhaṇāni ca duve idhāgato,
On return to here two marks are found,
- 1.21.9
Uttamappamukhatāya vindati.
of excellence and supremacy.
- 1.21.10
Ubbhamuppatitalomavā saso,
His hairs stand upright,
- 1.21.11
Pādagaṇṭhirahu sādhusaṇṭhitā;
and his ankles well-shaped.
- 1.21.12
Maṁsalohitācitā tacotthatā,
Swollen with flesh and blood, encased in skin,
- 1.21.13
Uparicaraṇasobhanā ahu.
gracing above the feet.
- 1.21.14
Gehamāvasati ce tathāvidho,
If that sort lives in the home, he becomes
- 1.21.15
Aggataṁ vajati kāmabhoginaṁ;
the best of those who enjoy sensual pleasures.
- 1.21.16
Tena uttaritaro na vijjati,
There’ll be none better than him;
- 1.21.17
Jambudīpamabhibhuyya iriyati.
he’ll proceed
having mastered all the Black Plum Tree Land. - 1.21.18
Pabbajampi ca anomanikkamo,
But going forth the peerless renunciate
- 1.21.19
Aggataṁ vajati sabbapāṇinaṁ;
turns into the best of all creatures.
- 1.21.20
Tena uttaritaro na vijjati,
There’ll be none better than him,
- 1.21.21
Sabbalokamabhibhuyya viharatī”ti.
he’ll live having mastered the whole world.”
11. Eṇijaṅghalakkhaṇaṁ
11. Antelope Calves

“Mendicants, in some past lives the Realized One was reborn as a human being.

sakkaccaṁ vācetā ahosi sippaṁ vā vijjaṁ vā caraṇaṁ vā kammaṁ vā:
He was a thorough teacher of a profession, a branch of knowledge, conduct, or action, thinking:

‘kintime khippaṁ vijāneyyuṁ, khippaṁ paṭipajjeyyuṁ, na ciraṁ kilisseyyun’”ti.
‘How might they quickly learn and practice, without getting exhausted?’

He quickly obtains the things worthy of a king, the factors, supports, and things befitting a king.

And what does he obtain as Buddha?

Yāni tāni samaṇārahāni samaṇaṅgāni samaṇūpabhogāni samaṇānucchavikāni, tāni khippaṁ paṭilabhati.
He quickly obtains the things worthy of an ascetic, the factors, supports, and things befitting an ascetic.

“In professions, knowledge, conduct, and deeds,

Kathaṁ vijāneyyuṁ lahunti icchati;
he thought of how they might easily learn.

Yadūpaghātāya na hoti kassaci,
Quickly, without tiresome delays,
- 1.24.5
Vāceti khippaṁ na ciraṁ kilissati.
he taught them things that harm no one at all.
- 1.24.6
Taṁ kammaṁ katvā kusalaṁ sukhudrayaṁ,
Having done that skillful deed
whose outcome is happiness, - 1.24.7
Jaṅghā manuññā labhate susaṇṭhitā;
he gains prominent and elegant calves.
- 1.24.8
Vaṭṭā sujātā anupubbamuggatā,
Well-formed in graceful spirals,
- 1.24.9
Uddhaggalomā sukhumattacotthatā.
he’s covered in delicate rising hairs.
- 1.24.10
Eṇeyyajaṅghoti tamāhu puggalaṁ,
They say that individual has antelope calves,
- 1.24.11
Sampattiyā khippamidhāhu lakkhaṇaṁ;
and that this is the mark of swift success.
- 1.24.12
Gehānulomāni yadābhikaṅkhati,
If he desires the things fitting the household life,
- 1.24.13
Apabbajaṁ khippamidhādhigacchati.
not going forth, they’ll quickly be his.
- 1.24.14
Sace ca pabbajjamupeti tādiso,
But if one such chooses the life gone forth,
- 1.24.15
Nekkhammachandābhirato vicakkhaṇo;
seeing clearly, loving renunciation,
- 1.24.16
Anucchavikassa yadānulomikaṁ,
the peerless renunciate will quickly find
- 1.24.17
Taṁ vindati khippamanomavikkamo”ti.
what is fitting and suitable.”
12. Sukhumacchavilakkhaṇaṁ

He approached an ascetic or brahmin and asked:

‘Sirs, what is skillful? What is unskillful? What is blameworthy? What is blameless? What should be cultivated? What should not be cultivated? Doing what leads to my lasting harm and suffering? Doing what leads to my lasting welfare and happiness?’

When looking at others he didn’t glare, look askance, or avert his eyes. Being straightforward, he reached out to others with straightforward intentions, looking at people with kindly eyes.

23. Crown Like a Turban

bahujanapubbaṅgamo ahosi kusalesu dhammesu bahujanapāmokkho kāyasucarite vacīsucarite manosucarite dānasaṁvibhāge sīlasamādāne uposathupavāse matteyyatāya petteyyatāya sāmaññatāya brahmaññatāya kule jeṭṭhāpacāyitāya aññataraññataresu ca adhikusalesu dhammesu.
He was the leader and forerunner of people in skillful behaviors such as good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, giving and sharing, taking precepts, observing the sabbath, paying due respect to mother and father, ascetics and brahmins, honoring the elders in the family, and various other things pertaining to skillful behaviors.

he gains a head crowned like a turban.

Byākaṁsu byañjananimittadharā,
The experts in omens and signs prophesied:

Pubbaṅgamo bahujanaṁ hessati.
‘He will be leader of the people.
- 2.15.10
Paṭibhogiyā manujesu idha,
Assistants serve him here among men,
- 2.15.11
Pubbeva tassa abhiharanti tadā;
as they did for him then in the past.

Yadi khattiyo bhavati bhūmipati,
If he becomes an aristocrat, ruler of the land,
- 2.15.13
Paṭihārakaṁ bahujane labhati.
he’ll gain the service of the people.
- 2.15.14
Atha cepi pabbajati so manujo,
But if that man goes forth,
- 2.15.15
Dhammesu hoti paguṇo visavī;
he’ll be sophisticated, proficient in the teachings.

Tassānusāsaniguṇābhirato,
Devoted to the virtues of his instruction,

Anvāyiko bahujano bhavatī”ti.
the people will become his followers.’”

A tuft so very white like cotton-wool

Uṇṇā sujātā bhamukantare ahu;
grew prettily between his eyebrows.

Na lomakūpesu duve ajāyisuṁ,
And never two, but only one,

Ekekalomūpacitaṅgavā ahu.
hair grew in each of his pores.

Taṁ lakkhaṇaññū bahavo samāgatā,
Many soothsayers learned in marks

Byākaṁsu uppādanimittakovidā;
and expert in signs gathered and prophesied:

Uṇṇā ca lomā ca yathā susaṇṭhitā,
‘One like this, with tuft and hair so prominent,

Upavattatī īdisakaṁ bahujjano.
will have many as his close adherents.

Gihimpi santaṁ upavattatī jano,
Even as householder many people will follow him,

Bahu puratthāpakatena kammunā;
due to the power of deeds in the past.

Akiñcanaṁ pabbajitaṁ anuttaraṁ,
But once gone forth, owning nothing,

26–27. Forty Gapless Teeth

pisuṇaṁ vācaṁ pahāya pisuṇāya vācāya paṭivirato ahosi. Ito sutvā na amutra akkhātā imesaṁ bhedāya, amutra vā sutvā na imesaṁ akkhātā amūsaṁ bhedāya, iti bhinnānaṁ vā sandhātā, sahitānaṁ vā anuppadātā, samaggārāmo samaggarato samagganandī samaggakaraṇiṁ vācaṁ bhāsitā ahosi.
He refrained from backbiting. He didn’t repeat in one place what he heard in another so as to divide people against each other. Instead, he reconciled those who were divided and support those who are united, delighting in harmony, loving harmony, speaking words that promote harmony.

acting improperly by fostering quarrels,

Sahitānaṁ bhedajananiṁ na bhaṇi.
sowing division in those who are united.

Avivādavaḍḍhanakariṁ sugiraṁ,
He spoke kind words to foster harmony,
- 2.21.7
Bhinnānusandhijananiṁ abhaṇi;
uniting those who are divided.

Kalahaṁ janassa panudī samaṅgī,
He cast aside quarrels among the people,

Sahitehi nandati pamodati ca.
rejoicing together with the united.

In good rebirths he enjoyed the fruit

his assembly will be indivisible.

And as an ascetic, stainless, immaculate,

He refrained from harsh speech. He spoke in a way that’s mellow, pleasing to the ear, endearing, going to the heart, polite, and likable and agreeable to the people.

His speech was sweet, helpful, and courteous.

Manaso piyā hadayagāminiyo,
He uttered words dear to the mind,

Vācā so erayati kaṇṇasukhā;
going to the heart, pleasing to the ear.

Vācāsuciṇṇaphalamanubhavi,
He enjoyed the fruit of his good verbal conduct,

Saggesu vedayatha puññaphalaṁ.
experiencing the fruit of good deeds in heaven.

Brahmassarattamidhamajjhagamā;

His tongue was long and wide,

and his speech was compelling.

Gihinopi ijjhati yathā bhaṇato,
Even as householder his speech brings prosperity.

30. A Lion-Like Jaw

“Yampi, bhikkhave, tathāgato purimaṁ jātiṁ purimaṁ bhavaṁ purimaṁ niketaṁ pubbe manussabhūto samāno
“Mendicants, in some past lives the Realized One was reborn as a human being.

samphappalāpaṁ pahāya samphappalāpā paṭivirato ahosi kālavādī bhūtavādī atthavādī dhammavādī vinayavādī, nidhānavatiṁ vācaṁ bhāsitā ahosi kālena sāpadesaṁ pariyantavatiṁ atthasaṁhitaṁ.
He refrained from talking nonsense. His words were timely, true, and meaningful, in line with the teaching and training. He said things at the right time which were valuable, reasonable, succinct, and beneficial.

Due to performing those deeds he was reborn in a heavenly realm.

He can’t be destroyed by any human foe or enemy.

buddho samāno kiṁ labhati?
And what does he obtain as Buddha?

Appadhaṁsiyo hoti abbhantarehi vā bāhirehi vā paccatthikehi paccāmittehi, rāgena vā dosena vā mohena vā samaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā mārena vā brahmunā vā kenaci vā lokasmiṁ.
He can’t be destroyed by any foe or enemy whether internal or external; nor by greed, hate, or delusion; nor by any ascetic or brahmin or god or Māra or divinity or by anyone in the world.

Buddho samāno idaṁ labhati”.
That’s what he obtains as Buddha.”

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.

So doing he passed from here to be reborn in heaven,

Sukataphalavipākamanubhosi;
where he enjoyed the fruit of deeds well done.

Caviya punaridhāgato samāno,
Passing away, on his return to here,

Dvidugamavaratarahanuttamalattha.
he gained a jaw like the finest of beasts.

Rājā hoti suduppadhaṁsiyo,
He became a king so very hard to defeat,
- 2.27.11
Manujindo manujādhipati mahānubhāvo;
a mighty lord and ruler of mankind.

Tidivapuravarasamo bhavati,
He was equal to the best in the city of the Third Heaven,
- 2.27.13
Suravarataroriva indo.
like Indra, the finest of gods.

Gandhabbāsurayakkharakkhasebhi,
One such as that is not easily beaten by centaurs,
- 2.27.15
Surehi na hi bhavati suppadhaṁsiyo;
titans, spirits, monsters, or gods.

Tathatto yadi bhavati tathāvidho,
If he becomes of that sort,
- 2.27.17
Idha disā ca paṭidisā ca vidisā cā”ti.
he illuminates the quarters and in-between.”
31–32. Samadantasusukkadāṭhālakkhaṇāni
31–32. Even and White Teeth

“Yampi, bhikkhave, tathāgato purimaṁ jātiṁ purimaṁ bhavaṁ purimaṁ niketaṁ pubbe manussabhūto samāno
“Mendicants, in some past lives the Realized One was reborn as a human being.

micchājīvaṁ pahāya sammāājīvena jīvikaṁ kappesi, tulākūṭakaṁsakūṭamānakūṭaukkoṭanavañcananikatisāciyogachedanavadhabandhanaviparāmosaālopasahasākārā paṭivirato ahosi.
He gave up wrong livelihood and earned a living by right livelihood. He refrained from falsifying weights, metals, or measures; bribery, fraud, cheating, and duplicity; mutilation, murder, abduction, banditry, plunder, and violence.

So tassa kammassa kaṭattā upacitattā ussannattā vipulattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjati.
Due to performing, accumulating, heaping up, and amassing those deeds, when his body broke up, after death, he was reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.

So tattha aññe deve dasahi ṭhānehi adhigaṇhāti dibbena āyunā dibbena vaṇṇena dibbena sukhena dibbena yasena dibbena ādhipateyyena dibbehi rūpehi dibbehi saddehi dibbehi gandhehi dibbehi rasehi dibbehi phoṭṭhabbehi.
There he surpassed the other gods in ten respects: heavenly lifespan, beauty, happiness, glory, sovereignty, sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches.

So tato cuto itthattaṁ āgato samāno imāni dve mahāpurisalakkhaṇāni paṭilabhati, samadanto ca hoti susukkadāṭho ca.
When he came back to this place he obtained these two marks: his teeth are even and perfectly white.

So tehi lakkhaṇehi samannāgato sace agāraṁ ajjhāvasati, rājā hoti cakkavattī dhammiko dhammarājā cāturanto vijitāvī janapadatthāvariyappatto sattaratanasamannāgato.
Possessing these marks, if he stays at home he becomes a king, a wheel-turning monarch, a just and principled king. His dominion extends to all four sides, he achieves stability in the country, and he possesses the seven treasures.

Tassimāni satta ratanāni bhavanti, seyyathidaṁ—
He has the following seven treasures:

cakkaratanaṁ hatthiratanaṁ assaratanaṁ maṇiratanaṁ itthiratanaṁ gahapatiratanaṁ pariṇāyakaratanameva sattamaṁ.
the wheel, the elephant, the horse, the jewel, the woman, the householder, and the commander as the seventh treasure.

Parosahassaṁ kho panassa puttā bhavanti sūrā vīraṅgarūpā parasenappamaddanā.
He has over a thousand sons who are valiant and heroic, crushing the armies of his enemies.

So imaṁ pathaviṁ sāgarapariyantaṁ akhilamanimittamakaṇṭakaṁ iddhaṁ phītaṁ khemaṁ sivaṁ nirabbudaṁ adaṇḍena asatthena dhammena abhivijiya ajjhāvasati.
After conquering this land girt by sea—free of harassment by bandits, successful and prosperous, safe, blessed, free of pests—he reigns by principle, without rod or sword.

Rājā samāno kiṁ labhati?
And what does he obtain as king?

Suciparivāro hoti sucissa honti parivārā brāhmaṇagahapatikā negamajānapadā gaṇakamahāmattā anīkaṭṭhā dovārikā amaccā pārisajjā rājāno bhogiyā kumārā.
His retinue is pure. This includes brahmins and householders, people of town and country, treasurers and chief ministers, military officers, guardsmen, ministers, councillors, rulers, tax beneficiaries, and princes.

Rājā samāno idaṁ labhati.
That’s what he obtains as king.
- 2.30.1
Sace kho pana agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajati, arahaṁ hoti sammāsambuddho loke vivaṭṭacchado.
But if he goes forth from the lay life to homelessness, he becomes a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha, who has cast off the world’s veil.

Buddho samāno kiṁ labhati?
And what does he obtain as Buddha?
- 2.30.3
Suciparivāro hoti, sucissa honti parivārā, bhikkhū bhikkhuniyo upāsakā upāsikāyo devā manussā asurā nāgā gandhabbā.
His retinue is pure. This includes monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, gods, humans, titans, dragons, and centaurs.
- 2.30.4
Buddho samāno idaṁ labhati”.
That’s what he obtains as Buddha.”
- 2.30.5
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.

“Micchājīvañca avassaji samena vuttiṁ,
“He abandoned wrong livelihood, and created

Hitamapi ca bahujanasukhañca acari.
and lived for the welfare and happiness of the people.

Sagge vedayati naro sukhapphalāni,
Having done what’s praised
by the clever, the wise, and the good, - 2.31.7
Karitvā nipuṇebhi vidūhi sabbhi;
that man experienced the fruit in heaven.

Vaṇṇitāni tidivapuravarasamo,
Equal to the best in the Third Heaven,
- 2.31.9
Abhiramati ratikhiḍḍāsamaṅgī.
he enjoyed himself with pleasure and play.
- 2.31.10
Laddhāna mānusakaṁ bhavaṁ tato,
From there he passed back to a human life.
- 2.31.11
Cavitvāna sukataphalavipākaṁ;
With the remaining ripening
of the fruit of good deeds, - 2.31.12
Sesakena paṭilabhati lapanajaṁ,
he obtained teeth that are even,
- 2.31.13
Samamapi sucisusukkaṁ.
gleaming, bright, and white.
- 2.31.14
Taṁ veyyañjanikā samāgatā bahavo,
Many soothsayers regarded as wise men
- 2.31.15
Byākaṁsu nipuṇasammatā manujā;
gathered and predicted of him:
- 2.31.16
Sucijanaparivāragaṇo bhavati,
‘With twice-born teeth
so even, so white, so clean and bright - 2.31.17
Dijasamasukkasucisobhanadanto.
his retinue will be so pure.
- 2.31.18
Rañño hoti bahujano,
As king, his people will also be pure,
- 2.31.19
Suciparivāro mahatiṁ mahiṁ anusāsato;
when he rules having conquered this earth so broad.
- 2.31.20
Pasayha na ca janapadatudanaṁ,
They won’t harm the country,
- 2.31.21
Hitamapi ca bahujanasukhañca caranti.
but will live for the welfare
and happiness of the people. - 2.31.22
Atha ce pabbajati bhavati vipāpo,
But if he goes forth he’ll be an ascetic free of ill,
- 2.31.23
Samaṇo samitarajo vivaṭṭacchado;
his passions quelled, the veil cast off.
- 2.31.24
Vigatadarathakilamatho,
Rid of stress and weariness,
- 2.31.25
Imamapi ca paramapi ca passati lokaṁ.
he sees this world and the next.
- 2.31.26
Tassovādakarā bahugihī ca pabbajitā ca,
Those who do his bidding, both lay and renunciate,
- 2.31.27
Asuciṁ garahitaṁ dhunanti pāpaṁ;
shake off wickedness, impure and blameworthy.
- 2.31.28
Sa hi sucibhi parivuto bhavati,
He’s surrounded by pure people, who cast aside
- 2.31.29
Malakhilakalikilese panudehī”ti.
stains, callousness, sin, and corruptions.’”
- 2.31.30
Idamavoca bhagavā.
That is what the Buddha said.
- 2.31.31
Attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandunti.
Satisfied, the mendicants approved what the Buddha said.

Lakkhaṇasuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ sattamaṁ.
