Maccharisutta

The Buddha is asked about the future destiny of people who are stingy and those who are generous.

ฉบับหลวงมัจฉริสูตรที่ ๙

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

เทวดาทูลถามว่า คนเหล่าใดในโลกนี้ เป็นคนตระหนี่เหนียวแน่น ดีแต่ว่าเขาทำการกีดขวางคนเหล่าอื่นผู้ให้อยู่ ฯ วิบากของคนพวกนั้นจะเป็นเช่นไร และสัมปรายภพของเขาจะเป็นเช่นไร ฯ ข้าพระองค์มาเพื่อทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาค ไฉนข้าพระองค์จึงจะรู้ความข้อนั้น ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสตอบว่า คนเหล่าใดในโลกนี้ เป็นคนตระหนี่เหนียวแน่น ดีแต่ว่าเขา ทำการกีดขวางคนเหล่าอื่นผู้ให้อยู่ ฯ คนเหล่านั้นย่อมเข้าถึงนรก กำเนิดสัตว์ดิรัจฉาน หรือยมโลก ถ้าหากถึงความเป็นมนุษย์ ก็เกิดในสกุลคนยากจนซึ่งจะหาท่อนผ้า อาหาร ความร่าเริงและความสนุกสนานได้โดยยาก ฯ คนพาลเหล่านั้นต้องประสงค์สิ่งใดแต่ผู้อื่น เขาย่อมไม่ได้แม้สิ่งนั้นสมความปรารถนา นั่นเป็นผลในภพนี้ และภพหน้าก็ยังเป็นทุคติอีกด้วย ฯ

เทวดาทูลถามว่า ก็ข้อนี้ข้าพระองค์เข้าใจชัดอย่างนี้ (แต่) จะทูลถามข้ออื่นกะพระโคดม ชนเหล่าใดในโลกนี้ได้ความเป็นมนุษย์แล้วรู้ถ้อยคำ ปราศจากความตระหนี่ เลื่อมใสในพระพุทธเจ้า พระธรรม และพระสงฆ์ เป็นผู้มีความเคารพแรงกล้า วิบากของชนเหล่านั้นจะเป็นเช่นไร และสัมปรายภพของเขาจะเป็นเช่นไร ข้าพระองค์มาเพื่อทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาค ไฉนข้าพระองค์จึงจะรู้ความข้อนั้น ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสตอบว่า ชนเหล่าใดในโลกนี้ได้ความเป็นมนุษย์แล้ว รู้ถ้อยคำ ปราศจากความตระหนี่ เลื่อมใสในพระพุทธเจ้า พระธรรม และพระสงฆ์ เป็นผู้มีความเคารพแรงกล้า ชนเหล่านี้ย่อมปรากฏในสวรรค์อันเป็นที่อุบัติ หากถึงความเป็นมนุษย์ย่อมเกิดในสกุลที่มั่งคั่ง ได้ผ้า อาหาร ความร่าเริงและความสนุกสนานโดยไม่ยาก พึงมีอำนาจแผ่ไปในโภคทรัพย์ที่ผู้อื่นหาสะสมไว้ บันเทิงใจอยู่ นั่นเป็นวิบากในภพนี้ ทั้งภพหน้าก็เป็นสุคติ ฯ

    “Those folk in the world who are stingy,

    kadariyā paribhāsakā;

    miserly and abusive,

    Aññesaṁ dadamānānaṁ,

    setting up obstacles

    antarāyakarā narā.

    for others who give.

    Kīdiso tesaṁ vipāko,

    What kind of result do they reap?

    samparāyo ca kīdiso;

    What kind of future life?

  10. 2.3

    Bhagavantaṁ puṭṭhumāgamma,

    We’ve come to ask the worthy sir:

    kathaṁ jānemu taṁ mayan”ti.

    how are we to understand this?”

    “Yedha maccharino loke,

    “Those folk in the world who are stingy,

    kadariyā paribhāsakā;

    miserly and abusive,

    Aññesaṁ dadamānānaṁ,

    setting up obstacles

    antarāyakarā narā.

    for others who give:

    Nirayaṁ tiracchānayoniṁ,

    they’re reborn in hell,

  17. 4.2

    yamalokaṁ upapajjare;

    the animal realm, or Yama’s world.

    Sace enti manussattaṁ,

    If they return to the human state,

  19. 4.4

    dalidde jāyare kule.

    they’re born in a poor family,

  20. 5.1

    Coḷaṁ piṇḍo ratī khiḍḍā,

    where clothes, food, pleasure, and play

  21. 5.2

    yattha kicchena labbhati;

    are hard to find.

  22. 5.3

    Parato āsīsare bālā,

    They don’t even get

  23. 5.4

    tampi tesaṁ na labbhati;

    what they hope for from others.

  24. 5.5

    Diṭṭhe dhammesa vipāko,

    This is the result in the present life,

  25. 5.6

    samparāye ca duggatī”ti.

    and in the next, a bad destination.”

    “Itihetaṁ vijānāma,

    “We understand what you’re saying,

  27. 6.2

    aññaṁ pucchāma gotama;

    and ask another question, Gotama.

    Yedha laddhā manussattaṁ,

    What about those who’ve gained the human state,

  29. 6.4

    vadaññū vītamaccharā.

    who are bountiful and rid of stinginess,

  30. 7.1

    Buddhe pasannā dhamme ca,

    confident in the Buddha and the teaching,

  31. 7.2

    saṅghe ca tibbagāravā;

    with keen respect for the Saṅgha?

  32. 7.3

    Kīdiso tesaṁ vipāko,

    What kind of result do they reap?

    samparāyo ca kīdiso;

    What kind of future life?

    Ete saggā pakāsanti,

    they illuminate the heavens

    yattha te upapajjare.

    wherever they’re reborn.

  42. 9.1

    Sace enti manussattaṁ,

    If they return to the human state,

  43. 9.2

    aḍḍhe ājāyare kule;

    they’re reborn in a rich family,

  44. 9.3

    Coḷaṁ piṇḍo ratī khiḍḍā,

    where clothes, food, pleasure, and play

  45. 9.4

    yatthākicchena labbhati.

    are easy to find.

  46. 10.1

    Parasambhatesu bhogesu,

    They rejoice like those

  47. 10.2

    vasavattīva modare;

    who control the possessions of others.

  48. 10.3

    Diṭṭhe dhammesa vipāko,

    This is the result in the present life,

  49. 10.4

    samparāye ca suggatī”ti.

    and in the next, a good destination.”
