The exterior sense fields are the things that are graspable, the craving is the grasping.
ฉบับหลวงอุปาทานสูตร
ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราจักแสดงธรรมอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งอุปาทานและอุปาทาน เธอทั้งหลายจงฟังธรรมนั้น ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ธรรมอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งอุปาทาน และอุปาทานเป็นไฉน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ธรรมอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งอุปาทานและอุปาทานนั้นคือ รูปที่จะพึงรู้แจ้งด้วยจักษุอันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร่ น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ ชวนให้กำหนัด เหล่านี้เรียกว่า ธรรมอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งอุปาทาน ความกำหนัดด้วยอำนาจความพอใจในรูปนั้น เป็นตัวอุปาทานในรูปนั้น ฯลฯ ธรรมารมณ์ที่จะพึงรู้แจ้งด้วยใจอันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร่ น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ ชวนให้กำหนัด เหล่านี้เรียก ธรรมอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งอุปาทาน ความกำหนัดด้วยอำนาจความพอใจในธรรมารมณ์นั้น เป็นตัวอุปาทานในธรรมารมณ์นั้น ฯ

Santi, bhikkhave, cakkhuviññeyyā rūpā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā.
There are sights known by the eye, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, upādāniyā dhammā.
These are called the things that fuel grasping.

Yo tattha chandarāgo, taṁ tattha upādānaṁ …pe…
The desire and greed for them is the grasping.
