ฉบับหลวงพาลิสิกสูตร
ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย พรานเบ็ดหย่อนเบ็ดที่มีเหยื่อลงในห้วงน้ำลึก ปลาที่เห็นแก่เหยื่อตัวใดตัวหนึ่งกลืนกินเบ็ดนั้น ปลานั้นชื่อว่ากลืนกินเบ็ดของนายพรานเบ็ด ถึงความวิบัติ ถึงความพินาศ พรานเบ็ดพึงกระทำได้ตามชอบใจฉันใด ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ในโลกมีเบ็ดอยู่ ๖ ชนิด เหล่านี้เพื่อจะนำสัตว์ทั้งหลายไป เพื่อจะฆ่าสัตว์ทั้งหลายเสีย ก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน เบ็ด ๖ ชนิดคืออะไรบ้าง คือ รูป อันจะพึงรู้แจ้งด้วยจักษุ อันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร่ น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ ชวนให้กำหนัด มีอยู่ ถ้าภิกษุเพลิดเพลิน สรรเสริญ หมกมุ่นในรูปนั้น ภิกษุนี้เราเรียกว่า กลืนกินเบ็ดของมาร ถึงความวิบัติ ถึงความพินาศ มารใจบาปพึงกระทำได้ตามชอบใจ เสียง … กลิ่น … รส … โผฏฐัพพะ ธรรมารมณ์อันจะพึงรู้แจ้งด้วยใจ อันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร่ น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ ชวนให้กำหนัด มีอยู่ ถ้าภิกษุเพลิดเพลิน สรรเสริญ หมกมุ่นธรรมารมณ์นั้น ภิกษุนี้เราเรียกว่า กลืนกินเบ็ดของมาร ถึงความวิบัติ ถึงความพินาศ มารใจบาปพึงกระทำได้ตามชอบใจ ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย รูปอันจะพึงรู้แจ้งด้วยจักษุอันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร่ น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ ชวนให้กำหนัด มีอยู่ ถ้าภิกษุไม่เพลิดเพลิน ไม่สรรเสริญ ไม่หมกมุ่นรูปนั้น ภิกษุนี้เราเรียกว่า ไม่กลืนกินเบ็ดของมาร ได้ทำลายเบ็ด ย่ำยีเบ็ด ไม่ถึงความวิบัติ ไม่ถึงความพินาศ มารใจบาปไม่พึงกระทำได้ตามชอบใจ เสียง … กลิ่น … รส … โผฏฐัพพะ … ธรรมารมณ์อันจะพึงรู้ได้ด้วยใจ อันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร่ น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ ชวนให้กำหนัด มีอยู่ ถ้าภิกษุไม่เพลิดเพลิน ไม่สรรเสริญ ไม่หมกมุ่นธรรมารมณ์นั้น ภิกษุนี้เราเรียกว่า ไม่กลืนกินเบ็ดของมาร ได้ทำลายเบ็ด ย่ำยีเบ็ด ไม่ถึงความวิบัติ ไม่ถึงความพินาศ มารใจบาปไม่พึงกระทำได้ตามชอบใจ ฯ

The Simile of the Angler
- 1.1
“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, bāḷisiko āmisagatabaḷisaṁ gambhīre udakarahade pakkhipeyya.
“Mendicants, suppose an angler was to cast a baited hook into a deep lake.

Tamenaṁ aññataro āmisacakkhu maccho gileyya.
Seeing the bait, a fish would swallow it.
- 1.3
Evañhi so, bhikkhave, maccho gilitabaḷiso bāḷisikassa anayaṁ āpanno byasanaṁ āpanno yathākāmakaraṇīyo bāḷisikassa.
And so the fish that swallowed the hook would meet with tragedy and disaster, and the angler can do what he wants with it.

Evameva kho, bhikkhave, chayime baḷisā lokasmiṁ anayāya sattānaṁ vadhāya pāṇinaṁ.
In the same way, there are these six hooks in the world that mean tragedy and slaughter for living creatures.

There are sights known by the eye, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

Tañce bhikkhu abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiṭṭhati.
If a mendicant approves, welcomes, and keeps clinging to them,

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhikkhu gilitabaḷiso, mārassa anayaṁ āpanno byasanaṁ āpanno yathākāmakaraṇīyo pāpimato …pe…
they’re called a mendicant who has swallowed Māra’s hook. They’ve met with tragedy and disaster, and the Wicked One can do with them what he wants.

ideas known by the mind, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

Tañce bhikkhu abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiṭṭhati.
If a mendicant approves, welcomes, and keeps clinging to them,
