Tatiyachaphassāyatanasutta
One who does not understand the six senses’ origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape is no true mendicant. A mendicant speaks up, saying that he does not truly understand these things, so the Buddha teaches him further.

พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ภิกษุรูปใดรูปหนึ่งไม่ทราบชัดความเกิด ความดับ คุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งผัสสายตนะ ๖ ตามความเป็นจริง พรหมจรรย์อันเธอไม่อยู่จบแล้ว เธอเป็นผู้ไกลจากธรรมวินัยนี้ เมื่อพระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสอย่างนี้แล้ว ภิกษุรูปหนึ่งได้กราบทูลพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ข้าพระองค์เป็นผู้ฉิบหายแล้วในธรรมวินัยนี้ เพราะข้าพระองค์ไม่ทราบชัดความเกิด ความดับ คุณ โทษ และอุบาย เครื่องสลัดออกแห่งผัสสายตนะ ๖ ตามความเป็นจริง ฯ
พ. ดูกรภิกษุ เธอจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นเป็นไฉน จักษุเที่ยงหรือไม่เที่ยง ฯ
ภิ. ไม่เที่ยง พระเจ้าข้า ฯ
พ. ก็สิ่งใดไม่เที่ยง สิ่งนั้นเป็นทุกข์หรือเป็นสุขเล่า ฯ
ภิ. เป็นทุกข์ พระเจ้าข้า ฯ
พ. ก็สิ่งใดไม่เที่ยง เป็นทุกข์ มีความแปรปรวนเป็นธรรมดา ควรหรือหนอที่จะตามเห็นสิ่งนั้นว่า นั่นของเรา นั่นเป็นเรา นั่นเป็นตัวตนของเรา ฯ
ภิ. ไม่ควรเห็นอย่างนั้น พระเจ้าข้า ฯ
พ. หู จมูก ลิ้น กาย ใจ เที่ยงหรือไม่เที่ยง ฯ
ภิ. ไม่เที่ยง พระเจ้าข้า ฯ
พ. ก็สิ่งใดไม่เที่ยง สิ่งนั้นเป็นทุกข์หรือเป็นสุขเล่า ฯ
ภิ. เป็นทุกข์ พระเจ้าข้า ฯ
พ. ก็สิ่งใดไม่เที่ยง เป็นทุกข์ มีความแปรปรวนเป็นธรรมดา ควรหรือหนอที่จะตามเห็นสิ่งนั้นว่า นั่นของเรา นั่นเป็นเรา นั่นเป็นตัวตนของเรา ฯ

พ. ดูกรภิกษุ อริยสาวกผู้ได้สดับแล้ว เห็นอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมเบื่อหน่าย แม้ในจักษุ แม้ในหู แม้ในจมูก แม้ในลิ้น แม้ในกาย แม้ในใจ เมื่อเบื่อหน่ายย่อมคลายกำหนัด เพราะคลายกำหนัดจึงหลุดพ้น เมื่อหลุดพ้นแล้ว ย่อมมีญาณหยั่งรู้ว่า หลุดพ้นแล้ว รู้ชัดว่า ชาติสิ้นแล้ว พรหมจรรย์อยู่จบแล้ว กิจที่ควรทำ ทำเสร็จแล้ว กิจอื่นเพื่อความเป็นอย่างนี้มิได้มี ฯ

“Yo hi koci, bhikkhave, bhikkhu channaṁ phassāyatanānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti.
“Mendicants, anyone who doesn’t truly understand the six fields of contact’s origin, disappearance, gratification, drawback, and escape

Avusitaṁ tena brahmacariyaṁ, ārakā so imasmā dhammavinayā”ti.
has not completed the spiritual journey and is far from this teaching and training.”

Evaṁ vutte, aññataro bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
When he said this, one of the mendicants said to the Buddha,

“etthāhaṁ, bhante, anassasaṁ panassasaṁ.
“Here, sir, I’m discouraged, really discouraged.

Ahañhi, bhante, channaṁ phassāyatanānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāmī”ti.
For I don’t truly understand the six fields of contact’s origin, disappearance, gratification, drawback, and escape.”

“Seeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind.

Nibbindaṁ virajjati; virāgā vimuccati; vimuttasmiṁ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṁ hoti.
Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed.

‘Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānātī”ti.
They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.’”
