Pattasutta

While the mendicants are listening to the teachings, Māra takes the form of an ox and looks as if he will break their almsbowls.

ฉบับหลวงปัตตสูตรที่ ๖

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

ข้อ ๔๖๑พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระวิหารเชตวัน อารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ฯ

ก็สมัยนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงยังภิกษุทั้งหลายให้เห็นแจ้ง ให้สมาทาน ให้อาจหาญ ให้ร่าเริงด้วยธรรมีกถาเกี่ยวด้วยอุปาทานขันธ์ ๕ ก็ภิกษุเหล่านั้นทำในใจให้สำเร็จประโยชน์ น้อมนึกมาด้วยความเต็มใจ เงี่ยโสตลงสดับธรรมอยู่ ฯ

เล่ม ๑๕ · หน้า ๑๔๐ครั้งนั้นแล มารผู้มีบาปได้มีความคิดว่า พระสมณโคดมนี้แล ยังภิกษุทั้งหลายให้เห็นแจ้ง ให้สมาทาน ให้อาจหาญ ให้ร่าเริงด้วยธรรมีกถาเกี่ยวด้วยอุปาทานขันธ์ ๕ ก็ภิกษุเหล่านั้นทำในใจให้สำเร็จประโยชน์ น้อมนึกมาด้วยความเต็มใจ เงี่ยโสตลงสดับธรรมอยู่ ถ้ากระไร เราพึงเข้าไปใกล้พระสมณโคดมถึงที่ประทับ เพื่อการกำบังตาเถิด ฯ

ก็โดยสมัยนั้นแล ภิกษุเหล่านั้นได้วางบาตรเป็นอันมากไว้ในที่กลางแจ้ง ฯ

ข้อ ๔๖๒ลำดับนั้น มารผู้มีบาปแปลงเพศเป็นโคเดินไปยังที่บาตรเหล่านั้นวางอยู่ ฯ ลำดับนั้น ภิกษุรูปหนึ่งจึงบอกกะภิกษุอีกรูปหนึ่งว่า ภิกษุๆ โคนั้นพึงทำบาตรทั้งหลายให้แตก ฯ

เมื่อภิกษุนั้นพูดอย่างนั้นแล้ว พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสกะภิกษุนั้นว่า ภิกษุนั่นมิใช่โค นั่นเป็นมารผู้มีบาป มาเพื่อกำบังตาพวกเธอ ฯ

ข้อ ๔๖๓ครั้งนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงทราบว่า ผู้นี้เป็นมารผู้มีบาปจึงตรัสกะมารผู้มีบาปด้วยพระคาถาว่า พระอริยสาวกย่อมเบื่อหน่ายในรูป เวทนา สัญญา สังขาร และวิญญาณอย่างนี้ว่า เราไม่ใช่นั่น นั่นไม่ใช่ของเรา แม้มารและเสนามารแสวงหาอยู่ในที่ทั้งปวง ก็ไม่พบอริยสาวกผู้เบื่อหน่ายแล้วอย่างนี้ มีอัตภาพอันเกษมล่วงพ้นสังโยชน์ทั้งปวงแล้ว ฯ

ลำดับนั้น มารผู้มีบาปเป็นทุกข์เสียใจว่า พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงรู้จักเรา พระสุคตทรงรู้จักเรา ดังนี้ จึงได้หายไปในที่นั้นนั่นเอง ฯ

    At Sāvatthī.

    Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā pañcannaṁ upādānakkhandhānaṁ upādāya bhikkhūnaṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti.

    Now at that time the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk on the topic of the five grasping aggregates.

    Te ca bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti.

    And those mendicants were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening.

    Atha kho mārassa pāpimato etadahosi:

    Then Māra thought,

    “ayaṁ kho samaṇo gotamo pañcannaṁ upādānakkhandhānaṁ upādāya bhikkhūnaṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti.

    “This ascetic Gotama is educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk on the topic of the five grasping aggregates.

    Yannūnāhaṁ yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkameyyaṁ vicakkhukammāyā”ti.

    Why don’t I go and pull the wool over their eyes?”

    Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā pattā abbhokāse nikkhittā honti.

    At that time several alms bowls were placed in the open air.

  12. 3.2

    Atha kho māro pāpimā balībaddavaṇṇaṁ abhinimminitvā yena te pattā tenupasaṅkami.

    Then Māra the Wicked manifested in the form of an ox and approached those bowls.

  13. 3.3

    Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu aññataraṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca:

    One of the mendicants said to another,

  14. 3.4

    “bhikkhu bhikkhu, eso balībaddo patte bhindeyyā”ti.

    “Mendicant, mendicant, that ox will break the bowls.”

  15. 3.5

    Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā taṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca:

    When this was said, the Buddha said to that mendicant,

    “na so, bhikkhu, balībaddo.

    “Mendicant, that’s no ox.

  17. 3.7

    Māro eso pāpimā tumhākaṁ vicakkhukammāya āgato”ti.

    That’s Māra the Wicked come to pull the wool over your eyes!”

    Atha kho bhagavā “māro ayaṁ pāpimā” iti viditvā māraṁ pāpimantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    Then the Buddha, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, addressed him in verse:

    “Rūpaṁ vedayitaṁ saññā,

    “Form, what is felt, and perception,

  20. 4.2

    viññāṇaṁ yañca saṅkhataṁ;

    consciousness, and what is chosen:

  21. 4.3

    Nesohamasmi netaṁ me,

    ‘I am not this’ and ‘this is not mine’;

  22. 4.4

    evaṁ tattha virajjati.

    that’s how they become free of desire for them.

  23. 5.1

    Evaṁ virattaṁ khemattaṁ,

    When you’re detached, secure,

  24. 5.2

    sabbasaṁyojanātigaṁ;

    all fetters transcended,

  25. 5.3

    Anvesaṁ sabbaṭṭhānesu,

    though Māra and his army chase everywhere

  26. 5.4

    mārasenāpi nājjhagā”ti.

    they never find you.”

  27. 6.1

    Atha kho māro pāpimā …pe… tatthevantaradhāyīti.

    Then Māra … vanished right there.
