SN 5.9

Selāsutta

Māra asks the nun Selā about who has created this “puppet”, i.e. the form that has been reincarnated. She replies that there is no creator, but it arises as a result of conditions, like the growing of a seed in a field.

ข้อ ๕๔๙สาวัตถีนิทาน ฯ

ครั้งนั้นเวลาเช้า เสลาภิกษุณีนุ่งห่มแล้ว ถือบาตรและจีวรเข้าไปบิณฑบาตยังพระนครสาวัตถี เที่ยวบิณฑบาตไปในพระนครสาวัตถีแล้ว เวลาปัจฉาภัต กลับจากบิณฑบาตแล้วเข้าไปยังป่าอันธวันเพื่อพักกลางวัน ครั้นถึงป่าอันธวันแล้ว จึงนั่งพักกลางวันที่โคนไม้ต้นหนึ่ง ฯ

ข้อ ๕๕๐ลำดับนั้น มารผู้มีบาปใคร่จะให้เสลาภิกษุณีบังเกิดความกลัว ความหวาดเสียว ความขนพองสยองเกล้า และใคร่จะให้เคลื่อนจากสมาธิ จึงเข้าไปหาเสลาภิกษุณีถึงที่นั่งพัก

ครั้นแล้ว ได้กล่าวกะเสลาภิกษุณีด้วยคาถาว่า รูปนี้ใครสร้าง ผู้สร้างรูปอยู่ที่ไหน รูปบังเกิดในที่ไหน รูปดับไปในที่ไหน ฯ

ข้อ ๕๕๑ลำดับนั้น เสลาภิกษุณีได้มีความดำริว่า นี่ใครหนอกล่าวคาถา จะเป็นมนุษย์หรืออมนุษย์ ฯ

ทันใดนั้น เสลาภิกษุณีได้มีความดำริว่า นี่คือมารผู้มีบาป ใคร่จะให้เราบังเกิดความกลัว ความหวาดเสียว ความขนพองสยองเกล้า และใคร่จะให้เคลื่อนจากสมาธิ จึงกล่าวคาถา ฯ

ครั้นเสลาภิกษุณีทราบว่า นี่คือมารผู้มีบาปแล้ว จึงได้กล่าวกะมารผู้มีบาปด้วยคาถาว่า รูปนี้ไม่มีใครสร้าง อัตภาพนี้ไม่มีใครก่อ รูปเกิดขึ้นเพราะอาศัยเหตุ ดับไปเพราะเหตุดับ ฯ พืชชนิดใดชนิดหนึ่งที่บุคคลหว่านลงในนา ย่อมงอกขึ้นเพราะอาศัยเหตุ ๒ ประการ คือ รสในแผ่นดินและยางในพืช ฉันใด ขันธ์ ธาตุ และอายตนะ ๖ เหล่านี้ ก็เกิดขึ้นเพราะอาศัยเหตุดับไป ฉันนั้น ฯ

ลำดับนั้น มารผู้มีบาปเป็นทุกข์เสียใจว่า เสลาภิกษุณีรู้จักเรา ดังนี้ จึงได้อันตรธานไปในที่นั้นเอง ฯ

    and sat at the root of a tree for the day’s meditation.

    Then Māra the Wicked, wanting to make the nun Selā feel fear, terror, and goosebumps …

    “Who created this puppet?

    Kvanu bimbaṁ samuppannaṁ,

    Where has the puppet arisen?

    kvanu bimbaṁ nirujjhatī”ti.

    And where does it cease?”

    Atha kho selāya bhikkhuniyā etadahosi:

    Then the nun Selā thought,

    “ko nu khvāyaṁ manusso vā amanusso vā gāthaṁ bhāsatī”ti?

    “Who’s speaking this verse, a human or a non-human?”

    Atha kho selāya bhikkhuniyā etadahosi:

    Then she thought,

    “māro kho ayaṁ pāpimā mama bhayaṁ chambhitattaṁ lomahaṁsaṁ uppādetukāmo samādhimhā cāvetukāmo gāthaṁ bhāsatī”ti.

    “This is Māra the Wicked, wanting to make me feel fear, terror, and goosebumps, wanting to make me fall away from immersion!”

    Atha kho selā bhikkhunī “māro ayaṁ pāpimā” iti viditvā māraṁ pāpimantaṁ gāthāhi paccabhāsi:

    Then Selā, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, replied to him in verse:

    “Nayidaṁ attakataṁ bimbaṁ,

    “This puppet isn’t self-made,

  19. 4.2

    nayidaṁ parakataṁ aghaṁ;

    nor is this gloom made by another.

  20. 4.3

    Hetuṁ paṭicca sambhūtaṁ,

    It comes to be because of a cause,

    hetubhaṅgā nirujjhati.

    and ceases when the cause breaks up.

    Yathā aññataraṁ bījaṁ,

    It’s like a seed that’s sown

    khette vuttaṁ virūhati;

    in a field; it grows

    Pathavīrasañcāgamma,

    relying on both the soil’s nutrients

    sinehañca tadūbhayaṁ.

    as well as moisture.

    Evaṁ khandhā ca dhātuyo,

    In the same way the aggregates and elements

  27. 6.2

    cha ca āyatanā ime;

    and these six sense fields

  28. 6.3

    Hetuṁ paṭicca sambhūtā,

    come to be because of a cause,

  29. 6.4

    hetubhaṅgā nirujjhare”ti.

    and cease when the cause breaks up.”

    Atha kho māro pāpimā “jānāti maṁ selā bhikkhunī”ti dukkhī dummano tatthevantaradhāyīti.

    Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, “The nun Selā knows me!” miserable and sad, vanished right there.
