Tathāgatasutta
The Realized One is so very powerful due to developing the four bases for psychic power.
ฉบับหลวงตถาคตสูตร · พระตถาคตมีฤทธิ์มาก
ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ข้อ ๑๒๔๕ณ ที่นั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายมาแล้วตรัสถามว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย เธอทั้งหลายจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นเป็นไฉน ตถาคตมีฤทธิ์มากอย่างนี้ มีอานุภาพมากอย่างนี้ เพราะได้เจริญ ได้กระทำให้มากซึ่งธรรมเหล่าไหน? ภิกษุทั้งหลายกราบทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ธรรมทั้งหลายของข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายมีพระผู้มีพระภาคเป็นรากฐาน ฯลฯ
ข้อ ๑๒๔๖พ. ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตมีฤทธิ์มากอย่างนี้ มีอานุภาพมากอย่างนี้ เพราะได้เจริญ ได้กระทำให้มากซึ่งอิทธิบาท ๔ อิทธิบาท ๔ เป็นไฉน? ตถาคตย่อมเจริญอิทธิบาทอันประกอบด้วยฉันทสมาธิและปธานสังขารดังนี้ว่า ฉันทะของเราจักไม่ย่อหย่อนเกินไป ไม่ต้องประคองเกินไป ไม่หดหู่ในภายใน ไม่ฟุ้งซ่านในภายนอก และตถาคตมีความสำคัญในเบื้องหน้าและเบื้องหลังอยู่ว่า เบื้องหน้าฉันใด เบื้องหลังก็ฉันนั้น เบื้องหลังฉันใด เบื้องหน้าก็ฉันนั้น เบื้องล่างฉันใด เบื้องบนก็ฉันนั้น เบื้องบนฉันใด เบื้องล่างก็ฉันนั้น กลางวันฉันใด กลางคืนก็ฉันนั้น กลางคืนฉันใด กลางวันก็ฉันนั้น ตถาคตมีใจเปิดเผย ไม่มีอะไรหุ้มห่อ อบรมจิตให้สว่างอยู่ ย่อมเจริญอิทธิบาทอันประกอบด้วยวิริยสมาธิ … จิตตสมาธิ … วิมังสาสมาธิและปธานสังขารดังนี้ว่า วิมังสาของเราจักไม่ย่อหย่อนเกินไป ไม่ต้องประคองเกินไป ฯลฯ ตถาคตมีใจเปิดเผย ไม่มีอะไรหุ้มห่อ อบรมจิตให้สว่างอยู่ ตถาคตมีฤทธิ์มากอย่างนี้ มีอานุภาพมากอย่างนี้ เพราะได้เจริญ ได้กระทำให้มากซึ่งอิทธิบาท ๔ เหล่านี้แล.
ข้อ ๑๒๔๗ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อนึ่ง ตถาคตย่อมแสดงอิทธิฤทธิ์ได้หลายอย่าง คือ คนเดียวเป็นหลายคนก็ได้ หลายคนเป็นคนเดียวก็ได้ ฯลฯ ใช้อำนาจทางกายไปตลอดพรหมโลกก็ได้ เพราะได้เจริญ ได้กระทำให้มากซึ่งอิทธิบาท ๔ เหล่านี้.
ข้อ ๑๒๔๘ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อนึ่ง ตถาคตย่อมกระทำให้แจ้งซึ่งเจโตวิมุติ ปัญญาวิมุติ อันหาอาสวะมิได้ เพราะอาสวะทั้งหลายสิ้นไป ด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเอง ในปัจจุบัน เพราะได้เจริญ ได้กระทำให้มากซึ่งอิทธิบาท ๔ เหล่านี้.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:
There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:

“Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave,
“What do you think, mendicants?

katamesaṁ dhammānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā tathāgato evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo”ti?
What things has the Realized One developed and cultivated so as to have such power and might?”

“Bhagavaṁmūlakā no, bhante, dhammā …pe…
“Our teachings are rooted in the Buddha. …”

“catunnaṁ kho, bhikkhave, iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā tathāgato evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo.
“The Realized One has become so powerful and mighty by developing and cultivating the four bases of psychic power.

Katamesaṁ catunnaṁ?
What four?
- 3.2
Idha, bhikkhave, tathāgato chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti—
It’s when a mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm, and active effort.

iti me chando na ca atilīno bhavissati, na ca atippaggahito bhavissati, na ca ajjhattaṁ saṅkhitto bhavissati, na ca bahiddhā vikkhitto bhavissati.
He thinks: ‘My enthusiasm won’t be too lax or too tense. And it’ll be neither constricted internally nor scattered externally.’

Pacchāpuresaññī ca viharati—
And he meditates perceiving before and behind:

yathā pure tathā pacchā, yathā pacchā tathā pure;
as before, so behind; as behind, so before;
- 3.6
yathā adho tathā uddhaṁ, yathā uddhaṁ tathā adho;
as below, so above; as above, so below;
- 3.7
yathā divā tathā rattiṁ, yathā rattiṁ tathā divā.
as by day, so by night; as by night, so by day.

Iti vivaṭena cetasā apariyonaddhena sappabhāsaṁ cittaṁ bhāveti.
And so, with an open and unenveloped heart, he develops a mind that’s full of radiance.

The Realized One has become so powerful and mighty by developing and cultivating these four bases of psychic power.
- 4.1
Imesañca pana, bhikkhave, catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā tathāgato anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti—ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti.
And by developing and cultivating these four bases of psychic power, the Realized One wields the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying himself and becoming one again … controlling the body as far as the realm of divinity.

Imesañca pana, bhikkhave, catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā tathāgato āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatī”ti.
And by developing and cultivating these four bases of psychic power, the Realized One realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom. And he lives having realized it with his own insight in this very life due to the ending of defilements.”
