Pabbatarājasutta

The King of Mountains

A family is supported by their head, as a tree is supported by a mountain.

ข้อ ๔๘๘ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ไม้แก่นขนาดใหญ่ๆ อาศัยขุนเขาหิมวันต์ ย่อมงอกงาม ด้วยความเจริญ ๓ ประการ ๓ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ เจริญด้วยกิ่ง ใบแก่ และใบอ่อน ๑ เจริญด้วยเปลือก และกะเทาะ ๑ เจริญด้วยกะพี้และแก่น ๑ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ไม้แก่นขนาด ใหญ่ๆ อาศัยขุนเขาหิมวันต์ย่อมงอกงามด้วยความเจริญ ๓ ประการนี้ ฉันใด ดูกรภิกษุ ทั้งหลาย ฉันนั้-เหมือนกัน คนภายในอาศัยพ่อบ้านแม่เรือนผู้มีศรัทธา ย่อมเจริญด้วยธรรม อันเป็นเหตุเจริญ ๓ ประการ ๓ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ เจริญด้วยศรัทธา ๑ เจริญด้วยศีล ๑ เจริญด้วยปัญญา ๑ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย คนภายในอาศัยพ่อบ้านแม่เรือนผู้มีศรัทธา ย่อมเจริญ ด้วยธรรมเป็นเหตุเจริญ ๓ ประการนี้แล ฯ

เล่ม ๒๐ · หน้า ๑๔๕ภูเขาศิลามีอยู่ในป่าใหญ่ หมู่ไม้ได้อาศัยภูเขานั้น เจริญงอกงามเติบโต อยู่ในป่า ฉันใด บรรดาบุตรภรรยา เผ่าพันธุ์อำมาตย์ หมู่ญาติและ เหล่าชนผู้พึ่งพำนักเลี้ยงชีพ ต่างอาศัยพ่อบ้านแม่เรือนผู้มีศรัทธา ถึง พร้อมด้วยศีล เจริญอยู่ฉันนั้น ผู้ที่มีปัญญาเป็นเครื่องพิจารณาเห็นศีล จาคะและสุจริต ของพ่อบ้านแม่เรือนผู้มีศีลนั้นเข้า ต่างก็พากันทำตาม บุคคลประพฤติธรรม คือ ทางที่ยังสัตว์ให้ไปสุคติไว้ในโลกนี้แล้ว ย่อม เป็นผู้เพลิดเพลิน สมประสงค์ที่น่าใคร่บันเทิงอยู่ในเทวโลก ฯ

    “Himavantaṁ, bhikkhave, pabbatarājaṁ nissāya mahāsālā tīhi vaḍḍhīhi vaḍḍhanti.

    “Mendicants, great sal trees grow in three ways supported by the Himalayas, the king of mountains.

    Katamāhi tīhi?

    What three?

  6. 1.3

    Sākhāpattapalāsena vaḍḍhanti, tacapapaṭikāya vaḍḍhanti, pheggusārena vaḍḍhanti.

    The branches, leaves, and foliage; the bark and shoots; and the softwood and heartwood.

  7. 1.4

    Himavantaṁ, bhikkhave, pabbatarājaṁ nissāya mahāsālā imāhi tīhi vaḍḍhīhi vaḍḍhanti.

    Great sal trees grow in these three ways supported by the Himalayas, the king of mountains.

    Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, saddhaṁ kulapatiṁ nissāya anto jano tīhi vaḍḍhīhi vaḍḍhati.

    In the same way, a family grows in three ways supported by a family head with faith.

    Katamāhi tīhi?

    What three?

  10. 2.3

    Saddhāya vaḍḍhati, sīlena vaḍḍhati, paññāya vaḍḍhati.

    Faith, ethics, and wisdom.

  11. 2.4

    Saddhaṁ, bhikkhave, kulapatiṁ nissāya anto jano imāhi tīhi vaḍḍhīhi vaḍḍhatīti.

    A family grows in these three ways supported by a family head with faith.

  12. 3.1

    Yathāpi pabbato selo,

    Supported by the rocky mountain

  13. 3.2

    araññasmiṁ brahāvane;

    in the wilds, the formidable forest,

  14. 3.3

    Taṁ rukkhā upanissāya,

    the tree grows

  15. 3.4

    vaḍḍhante te vanappatī.

    to become lord of the forest.

  16. 4.1

    Tatheva sīlasampannaṁ,

    So too, when the family head

  17. 4.2

    saddhaṁ kulapatiṁ idha;

    is ethical and faithful,

  18. 4.3

    Upanissāya vaḍḍhanti,

    supported by them, they grow:

  19. 4.4

    puttadārā ca bandhavā;

    children, partners, and kin,

  20. 4.5

    Amaccā ñātisaṅghā ca,

    colleagues, relatives,

  21. 4.6

    ye cassa anujīvino.

    and those dependent for their livelihood.

  22. 5.1

    Tyāssa sīlavato sīlaṁ,

    Seeing the ethical conduct of the virtuous,

  23. 5.2

    cāgaṁ sucaritāni ca;

    the generosity and good deeds,

  24. 5.3

    Passamānānukubbanti,

    those who see clearly

  25. 5.4

    attamatthaṁ vicakkhaṇā.

    do likewise.

  26. 6.1

    Idha dhammaṁ caritvāna,

    Having practiced the teaching here,

  27. 6.2

    maggaṁ sugatigāminaṁ;

    the path that goes to a good place,

  28. 6.3

    Nandino devalokasmiṁ,

    they delight in the heavenly realm,

  29. 6.4

    modanti kāmakāmino”ti.

    enjoying all the pleasures they desire.”

    Navamaṁ.
