Reasons a resident mendicant is cast down to hell or raised to heaven.

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ข้อ ๒๓๗ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุเจ้าอาวาสประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕ ประการ เหมือนถูก นำมาเก็บไว้ในนรก ๕ ประการเป็นไฉน คือไม่ใคร่ครวญ ไม่พิจารณาก่อนแล้วกล่าวสรรเสริญ ผู้ควรตำหนิ ๑ ไม่ใคร่ครวญ ไม่พิจารณาก่อนแล้วกล่าวตำหนิผู้ควรสรรเสริญ ๑ เป็นผู้ตระหนี่ อาวาส หวงแหนอาวาส ๑ เป็นผู้ตระหนี่สกุลหวงแหนสกุล ๑ ย่อมยังศรัทธาไทยให้ตกไป ๑ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุเจ้าอาวาสประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕ ประการนี้แล เหมือนถูกนำมาเก็บไว้ใน นรก ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุเจ้าอาวาสประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕ ประการ เหมือนถูกเชิญมาอยู่ ในสวรรค์ ๕ ประการเป็นไฉน คือใคร่ครวญพิจารณาก่อนแล้วกล่าวตำหนิผู้ควรตำหนิ ๑ ใคร่ ครวญพิจารณาก่อนแล้วกล่าวสรรเสริญผู้ควรสรรเสริญ ๑เป็นผู้ไม่ตระหนี่อาวาส ไม่หวงแหน อาวาส ๑ เป็นผู้ไม่ตระหนี่สกุล ไม่หวงแหนสกุล ๑ ไม่ยังศรัทธาไทยให้ตกไป ๑ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย
ภิกษุเจ้าอาวาสประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕ ประการนี้แล เหมือนถูกเชิญมาอยู่ในสวรรค์ ฯ

“Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye.
“Mendicants, a resident mendicant with five qualities is placed in hell as if delivered there.

Katamehi pañcahi?
What five?
- 1.3
Ananuvicca apariyogāhetvā avaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati;
Without examining or scrutinizing, they praise those deserving of criticism,
- 1.4
ananuvicca apariyogāhetvā vaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsati;
and they criticize those deserving of praise.
- 1.5
āvāsamaccharī hoti āvāsapaligedhī;
They’re stingy and avaricious regarding monasteries.
- 1.6
kulamaccharī hoti kulapaligedhī;
They’re stingy and avaricious regarding families.
- 1.7
saddhādeyyaṁ vinipāteti.
And they waste a gift given in faith.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye.
A resident mendicant with these five qualities is placed in hell as if delivered there.

Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ sagge.
A resident mendicant with five qualities is placed in heaven as if delivered there.

What five?

Anuvicca pariyogāhetvā avaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsati;
After examining and scrutinizing, they criticize those deserving of criticism,
- 2.4
anuvicca pariyogāhetvā vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati;
and they praise those deserving of praise.
- 2.5
na āvāsamaccharī hoti na āvāsapaligedhī;
They’re not stingy and avaricious regarding monasteries.
- 2.6
na kulamaccharī hoti na kulapaligedhī;
They’re not stingy and avaricious regarding families.
- 2.7
saddhādeyyaṁ na vinipāteti.
And they don’t waste a gift given in faith.
- 2.8
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ sagge”ti.
A resident mendicant with these five qualities is placed in heaven as if delivered there.”
