ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุเจ้าอาวาสประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕ ประการ เหมือน ถูกเชิญมาอยู่ ในสวรรค์ ๕ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ ใคร่ครวญพิจารณาก่อนแล้วกล่าวตำหนิผู้ควรตำหนิ ๑ ใคร่ ครวญพิจารณาก่อนแล้วกล่าวสรรเสริญผู้ควรสรรเสริญ ๑ไม่เป็นผู้ตระหนี่อาวาส ๑ ไม่ตระหนี่ สกุล ๑ ไม่ตระหนี่ลาภ ๑ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายภิกษุเจ้าอาวาสประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕ ประการนี้แล เหมือนถูกเชิญมาอยู่ในสวรรค์ ฯ

“Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye.
“Mendicants, a resident mendicant with five qualities is placed in hell as if delivered there.

What five?

Ananuvicca apariyogāhetvā avaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati;
Without examining or scrutinizing, they praise those deserving of criticism,
- 1.4
ananuvicca apariyogāhetvā vaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsati;
and they criticize those deserving of praise.

āvāsamaccharī hoti;
They’re stingy regarding monasteries,
- 1.6
kulamaccharī hoti;
families,
- 1.7
lābhamaccharī hoti.
and material things.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye.
A resident mendicant with these five qualities is placed in hell as if delivered there.

After examining and scrutinizing, they criticize those deserving of criticism,

anuvicca pariyogāhetvā vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati;
and they praise those deserving of praise.

na āvāsamaccharī hoti;
They’re not stingy regarding monasteries,
- 2.6
na kulamaccharī hoti;
families,
- 2.7
na lābhamaccharī hoti.
and material things.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ sagge”ti.
A resident mendicant with these five qualities is placed in heaven as if delivered there.”
